What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had 5 fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude!

Request for litter picking volunteers Dear Residents of St Leonards, St Ives, Ashley Heath and Ashley, I have been on the local Parish Council for approximately 39 years and am regularly disappointed in the state our roads, pavements and surrounding areas that are left in an untidy state in our Parish. Litter, cans, bottles, are discarded with lack of thought as to who is left to clean up other peoples rubbish. I have offered to try and find people who would be willing to help me raise groups of four who would clean up the rubbish areas. The more people who put their names forward would make the task easier
for everyone and help less often than once a month should enough people offer to help. If enough people come forward the Parish Council will provide yellow jackets, pick up tools and sacks in which to put the rubbish collected. The more people who offer will make the system more effective and hopefully a good number will mean a very successful job. If you can manage one hour a month please let me know. The story behind the production... With a string of successful productions over the last 3 years covering Musical Theatre, Cabaret and Drama, Encore are proud to present Jill Santoriello’s Musical Masterpiece, A TALE OF TWO CITIES, in association with Trowbridge’s Estate & Lettings, Ferndown. Taken from the Charles Dickens Novel, this Musical follows the lives of French and English people, all caught up in the terror and rage that marked the beginning of the French revolution. Two men in love with the same woman. Two cities swept up in revolution. One last chance for a man to redeem his wasted life and change the world. This musical focusses on the love triangle between young beauty Lucie Manette, French aristocrat Charles Darnay and drunken English lawyer, Sydney Carton. Follow the Manette family as they struggle with the wonder and tragedy that

July 2018 marks the opening in London’s Charing Cross Theatre, of Jill Santoriello’s latest production, a musical entitled “IT HAPPENED IN KEY WEST”. Friends of New Forest Airfields The Registered Charity, Friends of the New Forest Airfields (FONFA) was started by a group of local aviation enthusiasts, Service Veterans, authors and historians, during the 1990s, primarily to erect a Memorial to all military and civilian personnel, who had served on the twelve airfields during and immediately after WWII. The Memorial in Black Lane, which lies on the western edge of the former Holmsley South airfield, was dedicated in 2002. Secondly, the Friends wished to develop an educational and research resource to support students of all ages and backgrounds, and visitors to the area, to learn and understand the purposes, activities and importance of the airfields, and the aircrew who flew from them. The twelve airfields of the New Forest area played a crucial part in the D-Day period in June 1944, and later, in bringing home thousands of prisoners of war and service personnel, and opening up the new air routes across the globe. They were involved in every aspect of air warfare from research and development, training, defensive and offensive missions, reconnaissance and supporting the operations of secret agents and Resistance Organisations in occupied Europe.
During the period around D-Day, many hundreds of sorties were flown daily from the 12 airfields, with the ‘Advanced Landing Ground’ at Needs Oar Point being the busiest airfield in the country, for around three weeks. Pilots flew missions there for up to eighteen hours a day, with take offs or landings as often as one every 45 seconds. Most of the 2000 personnel working on site lived in tents. All refuelling, re-arming and minor servicing of the ninety Typhoon aircraft was carried out in the open air, with supplies and equipment in the back of three ton trucks. Four open ended corrugated iron ‘blister’ hangars provided partial protection against the elements for major aircraft servicing. At that time, the service personnel working on the twelve New Forest airfields numbered over 20,000, with an additional 10,000 civilians supplying and supporting their activities.

In 2009, the first New Forest Airfields Museum & Education Centre opened in a room and two corridors adjacent to our office in a 1960s Maycrete Hut, at Merryfield Park, formerly the RAF Sopley domestic site. In 2015, Merryfield Park was sold for redevelopment and demolished. The Charity then went ‘on the road’ for ten months. In October 2015, we began the move into the former RAF Sopley back-up generator building, on the western edge of the site. With extraordinary generosity, our founder Trustee, who owned the site, refurbished the building to a very high standard, including underfloor heating, new ceiling lighting and an upstairs gallery and office. The new Centre was opened by Lady Montagu, FONFA’s Patron, in May 2016, and is the only Museum dedicated to the New Forest Airfields in WWII. The Main
Hall is named after Ann Baily, the late wife of our late Founder Trustee, Bernard Baily. The Stairway Panels - recording the 12 airfields, all with a signature aircraft image, lead to the first floor gallery, where many limited edition prints, signed by servicemen and women who served on the airfields, line the walls. Information panels, photographs and model dioramas tell the story of the airfields, in the main hall, with many a tale of danger and heroism. Original WWII artefacts and unique documents are housed in the many display cabinets. There is also a section on local early flying and the WWI training airfield at East Boldre. Talking about Wildlife...
Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support
At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and final tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barfleur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. Trudie’s Big Day Out As part of the NHS 70th anniversary celebrations, Trudie Spicer, a branch member of the East Dorset and Ringwood NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF), won the Wessex Area NHSRF ballot to attend The Buckingham Palace Garden Party. On the big day Trudie travelled to London by train, accompanied by her grandson Andrew. Upon arrival in London Trudie was told that she would be taken by taxi to a surprise venue for lunch beforehand. Unbeknown to her, however, Trudie’s son in law, who worked for the owners of the Hotel, had arranged a wonderful reception at the Ritz for her! Trudie was met and treated just like a VIP, given a special goodie bag and after a lovely lunch she was taken by chauffeur driven Daimler to Buckingham Palace. Alas the Queen was not present but Trudie saw Prince Charles and Prince Edward. A fine finish to a wonderful day that Trudie will remember forever.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

29 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. It is a good idea to not only arrange the LPAs but also to complete an advanced directive or “living will” at the same time so that your chosen Attorney’s are fully aware of all your wishes well in advance of the powers being needed to be used. MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!

You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.
When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.
However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the

Heritage: St Leonards Hospital In WW2, once the Americans entered the fray following Pearl Harbour in December 1941, it was obvious that at some future date an assault would be launched from the UK. As a result of consultations, they estimated a requirement here for some 95,000 beds to deal with the immediate care of casualties. The St. Leonards area was among sites earmarked locally for “temporary” hospitals, plus Odstock, Kingston Lacy and Blandford Camp.
Plans drawn up to the US specification included this copy of that made for St. Leonards dated 1943, but subsequently used to record some of the postwar demolitions. A full size copy of the original was obtained at a 2010 event held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the NHS. Once completed, it was “mothballed” and Italian PoWs accommodated in tents on the site of today’s cricket pitch assisted in its care. According to my researches at the time, in 1942 it was designated “95th (US) Station Hospital”. In July 1943 a 285th Hospital unit was activated at New Orleans, USA. It moved to various sites in USA, and was re-organised as 104th General Hospital, which made more moves around the USA, ending up at Camp Kilner, New Jersey. Ten days after the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944, they embarked on the SS Argentina,
arriving at Liverpool on 28th June. Some 585 officers and men were temporarily accommodated at Merley House and its surrounding park while putting the hospital into operation. They were helped by 34 British civilians, plus 75 German PoWs, their accommodation now surrounded by a stockade with watch towers. An amendment on the plan dated 1945 records these additions. By 20th July the hospital became operational, with a capacity for 1,000 beds. Casualties began to arrive by air via Hurn (an RAF/ BOAC base throughout the War) or by rail in Hospital trains at the rail head in Ringwood. By December capacity had increased to 1,250 beds. The rough “Sandy”, or today’s Boundary, Lane became known as “the Yellow Brick Road”, after the song in the film “The Wizard of Oz”. However, Hurn Road had been tarmacced earlier to cope with military traffic. There are suggestions that “Haven Garage”, today’s

Wakelins, may have serviced some of their vehicles. The site was self-sufficient for accommodation, ratings, officers and nurses huts occupying the eastern side of the site. The aerial photograph was taken around 1988, when some of the old wards and all the accommodation buildings had already been demolished, but the ambulance centre had yet to arrive. Two days before VE Day on 8th May 1945 a 6ft American Oak (The Victory Oak), provided by Stewarts Nurseries, was planted as token of friendship between US and GB. A photograph exists of a plaque dated 8th May in the 1996 book by Frank Agass. There is also a photograph showing Frank, an American Officer and the head gardener of Stewarts at a planting ceremony, believed to be a similar commemoration on 6th May 1994, or 50 years after D-Day. Given its size today, one would suggest that this must be the oak tree that survives within the current housing development. No date is given for the departure of
the US Hospital team, but apparently they returned home in some style, on board RMS Queen Mary. The hospital buildings are once again mothballed, to be taken over by the NHS on 1st April 1950, and renamed “St. Leonards Hospital for Elderly Patients”. In August 1976, severe heath fires threatened the site and 320 elderly patients were evacuated to Ferndown Upper School. In 1980 proposals to convert it into a General Hospital fell through, due to shortage of doctors. At the time there were 380 patients and 450 staff on site. In 1990, plans to close the Hospital and sell the site were revealed, but a proposal to convert to an open prison was dropped. The following year plans appeared for development of the 72 acre site, of which 50 acres are protected, as a hotel complex with 200 residential properties. At one stage it is said that Haskins Garden Centre, at the time on the present Sainsbury’s site, expressed an interest, but Ministry of Transport restrictions regarding direct access to the A31, an on-going limitation, saw them move to Longham. Today, with all its original buildings demolished, under the latest Dorset NHS plan even survival of the modern sections of the hospital are under threat. Meanwhile more details of St. Leonards and other nearby wartime hospitals, with additional archive pictures, can be found on file at Ringwood’s Meeting House. John Hawkins

New main ring attraction at this year’s Dorset County Show With just a few months to go until this year’s Dorset County Show, the organisers have revealed the new main ring attraction for 2018. Organised by Dorchester Agricultural Society, the show will take place from Saturday September 1 to Sunday September 2, at the Dorchester Showground. The two-day annual show attracts more than 60,000 people each year since it began in 1840, and boasts a variety of attractions, livestock, and fun for all the family. This year’s main ring attraction will be camel racing provided by Joseph’s Amazing Camels, which have been featured on Countryfile and also have been the stars of many advertising campaigns including the British airline easyJet. This is the first time camel racing has taken place at the show and is definitely not to be missed. Also new for 2018 is The Fabulous Food & Farming Education Area which will provide visitors with everything they need to know about the important role farming plays in our everyday lives. Information will also be shared on where our food comes from before it is sold in the supermarkets. Throughout the weekend competitive classes will be taking place for more than 20 different types of cattle, over 30 different types of sheep, goats and pigs, as well as in homecraft, horticulture and sheep shearing. Poultry, rabbits and alpacas will also be on show, with falconry displays, scurry racing and the Grand Parade of award-winning livestock will take place in the main ring. Food lovers will have an extensive range of hand-picked catering concessions to choose from, each specialising in a different type of cuisine, showcasing local food producers from all across Dorset. There will be more than 450 trade stands at the show during the weekend for those looking to support local suppliers. High-end
country items will also be found in the specialist ‘Shopping@theAvenue’ marquee.
