St Leonards & St Ives Parish Council Two of the most common complaints at this time of year particularly with such large gardens in the area are about bonfires and overhanging vegetation. Bonfires Bonfires are only illegal if they cause a nuisance to others. It is commonly thought that there are byelaws banning bonfires or restricting the days or times when they are allowed - there aren’t. However please be considerate and think before you light there are other environmentally friendly alternatives such as composting it’s free and great for soil conditioning and mulching; use the garden waste collection scheme or take it to one of the household recycling centres. Smoke is a real health nuisance if you have a young child or anyone with breathing issues such as asthma it is a major concern. There is already so much pollution in the air with the traffic without additional smoke which could easily be avoided. There is no good time of day to do it either. You will be upsetting someone, after all they do not know you are about to light it and may have windows open or be planning time out in their garden. Imagine how you would
feel if you had just sat down in the garden for it to be ruined by smoke.
For those people who will not consider any other alternative and I am sure there will be some please consider some basic guidelines for your safety and to limit the impact:• Warn your neighbours - lighting a bonfire can cause nuisance to your neighbours especially if it is a nice sunny day with washing out and windows open • Only burn dry material - this is likely to cause less smoke • Never burn household rubbish, rubber tyres or anything containing plastic, foam or paint - these can cause harmful emissions • Never use accelerants to encourage the fire • Avoid lighting a fire in unsuitable weather conditions - smoke hangs in the air on damp days and in the evening. If it is windy smoke may be blown into neighbour gardens and across roads • Avoid burning at weekends and on bank holidays when people want to enjoy their gardens • Never leave a fire unattended or leave it to smoulder with all the

trees in this area we are a high fire risk especially in dry weather. Whilst bonfires are not illegal if they do become a nuisance (due to frequency or the type of rubbish being burnt) there are steps that you can take. The guidance from Dorset for You website is: in the first instance, approach your neighbours and politely tell them how the bonfire is affecting you. Often, people are unaware of the way smoke is blowing and consequently, the effect it is having on you. If after discussing the matter, the neighbour continues to light bonfires which you feel cause you nuisance, you can report the problem to the District Council Public Health Department and an officer will investigate. They will need the information direct from the person it has affected, they will not take the information from a third party such as myself. They will need to know the exact location, times, dates, severity and the impact it has had on you. Without this information it is unlikely that they can take any action. This is best reported on line and you can do this by going to:www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/bonfires Alternatively you can contact the District Council Public Health Department on publichealth@
christchurchandeastdorset.gov.uk Tel: 01202 795185 If the smoke from a bonfire poses a hazard to road users the police have powers to deal with it and you should report the incident to them. Overhanging vegetation please keep an eye on your hedge especially when it is adjacent to a road or pavement. It is particularly important if your property is on a bend or junction as sight lines might be obstructed. Hedges and trees grow vigorously at this time of year and need keeping in check. Check for any nests first though. The full width of the footway should be kept clear and this includes keeping a height clearance of 2.2m or 7 feet, and clear of streetlights and any road signs. If your tree or shrub overhangs a carriageway it needs to have a 5.2m clearance or 17 feet. You could be liable if an accident occurs and your hedge is obstructing the path. What lies beneath... The annual celebration of the sea with national ‘Marine Weeks’ from 29th July – 13th August is a chance for us to all reflect about what the sea means to us. Living in Dorset means most of us are a stone’s throw away from the beautiful beach, with many of us spending our summer swimming in it, walking along it and admiring it from near or afar. For something that’s such a big part of our lives in Dorset, many of us know very little about the underwater world which lies beneath the waves. Not unlike our neighbourhoods on land, the sea has communities, families and homes which are surviving and reproducing every day; the difference is that we can’t always see this world easily, which makes it hard to understand, and appreciate. In 2013, Dorset had three Marine Conservation Zones (MCZ’s) designated including Poole Rocks MCZ, the South Dorset MCZ and Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, providing protection for the species living there. The charm and charisma of the fascinating marine wildlife which will benefit from this protection should not be underestimated in favour of their land-based counterparts. Cuttlefish, for example, are intelligent animals and masters of deception, deploying secret ‘weapons’ with the cunning of James Bond; squirting enemies in a

cloud of black ink, before making their escape, and trapping prey with lightning-fast tentacles. The black bream which flock to the Poole Rocks MCZ each spring protect their nests to the death and spend weeks creating the perfect nests for thousands of their eggs to hatch. Wildlife of the sea has some amazing stories and characters, from the bizarre looking tompot blenny, the European lobsters’ eyes popping out from between the crevices, to the iconic dolphins who sometimes venture into our world as we marvel at their speed and agility, jumping in and out of the water. There are things we can all do to learn about marine wildlife, and also help it. A partnership project led by DWT, Southern IFCA, the NEFS, MCS, Seasearch and 7 Tenths Ecology Ltd has seen the creation of a fantastic website about Poole Rocks MCZ, complete with high quality video and images, to depict life beneath the sea. Heritage: A Tale of Two Churches In the June 2017 issue, poultry farmer William Bell had donated land in 1912 on which the first “All Saints” Church was built at a cost of £500. Bell provided the moulds, used on his farm, for the concrete blocks. A local architect donated the design, a photograph of his model on file. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Manners, whose husband owned the estates at Avon Tyrrell. Local benefactor T.H. Russell, owner of St. Ives House, provided support. He is seen below, back to camera, at an event in Blue Cottage Meadow, today partly Russell Gardens. The cottage survives as Beech Cottage, just round the corner. Here visiting a bric-a-brac stall at which Mrs Bell was a helper, he is probably accompanied by his widowed mother and sister Agnes. On the right is MP for Boldre, Frank Perkins, whose wife opened the event. Local Doctor Gott is to her right.
As the “Conventional District” of St. Ives and St. Leonards within Christchurch Parish, lay readers conducted regular services, while local Vicars took more important ones. In 1927 a trial with a “curatein-charge” led to special consents for weddings, as the district overlapped both Ringwood and Christchurch parishes. As the population grew, in 1932 the new independent civil parish’s name “St. Leonards and St. Ives” was confusing. In 1937 an old property on Pine Drive was purchased, becoming “The Parsonage”. By the 1960s major developments in the surrounding areas suggested significant population growth. A large hall had been built next to the church, but both church and parsonage were in need of repair, and various options were considered. Plans for a local cemetery had failed in the 1950s, but today a woodland version is back on the Parish Council’s agenda.

At his first PCC meeting in 1967, recently appointed “priest in charge” Reverend Aries approved a plan. The “Parsonage” was condemned in 1968, outline permission was obtained for a church and vicarage on the site, but planners turned it down, to preserve the trees. The site was sold, and the proceeds went towards the cost of a house as “vicarage”. A significant change occurred in 1970, when an independent Parish was created, named St. Leonards and St. Ives, and Reverend Aries became a Vicar. Meanwhile Plan B was under way. The hall had been extended to accommodate services during the new build, the final one in the old church on 29th August 1971. The Bishop of Winchester laid the foundation stone on 19th February 1972, returning to dedicate the new church in January 1973. A final cost of £34,684.23 was covered in part by a £22,500 Diocesan grant. However, some of the earlier cost cutting and design elements soon came home to roost, in particular the flat roofs.
Provision of the present gabled roofs in 1982 cost not far short of the new build, yet, with only a £10,000 grant this time, the debt was still cleared by parishioner’s efforts in November 1985. During 1989 three retired parishioners saved some £3,000 of costs by personally creating the pitched roofs on the vestries. A final major project, replacement of the old hall by the Church Centre in 1994, was a massive new commitment of about £150,000, largely funded by low interest or interest free loans. Those original benefactors would surely be proud of their successors. We now await the outcome of the proposed new Diocesan grouping of six churches, including Ringwood and Ellingham, under a rector with the help of an assistant priest. An archive file R09 dedicated to the history of these two churches is in preparation for the Meeting House. John Hawkins

Pig Roast
Cream Teas to support WaterAid
St Leonards & St Ives Hall Committee are holding an all-you-can-eat Pig Roast on Saturday 2nd September 4pm until 9pm. The pig is cooked on the spit and carved fresh by two male committee members. This will be served with apple sauce stuffing, new potatoes and salad. The desserts are made by local ladies and have to be seen to be believed. There is a bar with very reasonable prices and we are hoping to throw in a few games of fun bingo with prizes for one line, two lines and a full house. There is also a great raffle. All profits go to our extension fund.
Local WaterAid supporters will be providing wonderful homemade cakes and scones on Sat 12th & Sun 13th August from 2.30 to 5.30pm atThe Old School, Sturminster Marshall, BH21 4BU (opposite the church). The event aims to raise funds in order to help transform the lives of some of the world’s poorest communities by providing access to safe water and sanitation. You couldn’t have a better excuse to enjoy a delicious, and modestly priced, afternoon cream tea.

The Dorset Publications Camper Van Don’t we just love listening to the young ones talking about their exploits? Well, Nellie is no exception and she loves to hear what Hayden has been up to. Hayden was lucky enough to be chosen to do the ‘Blue Skies’ Programme, through his school. Blue Skies is part of the Jon Egging Trust (JET) which was set up in memory of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, who tragically lost his life while flying in the Red Arrows display at the Bournemouth Air Festival in 2011. The Trust realises Jon’s dream of inspiring young people through his love of aviation, teamwork and leadership and it supports young people aged 13-16, to achieve their full potential. This is what Hayden, who is 13, told Nellie… “Joining the group I felt slightly nervous as I didn’t know what it was about, but very excited about going on some special trips that money wouldn’t buy. The first place we went to was MOD Boscombe Down. We saw some planes, went in an olden day hangar and used night vision torches and goggles. It was very exciting. We were also introduced to the concept of Blue Skies which is to

We were challenged with our communication skills here! My favourite trip was when we went to Winchester University. We got to touch a real life 800 year old skeleton. I put its spine together! On a lighter note we were taught how to calculate a skeleton’s age and gender. I learned all about the different bones in the body and that when you are born you have 300 plus bones, but by the time you are an adult they fuse together into 206. After lunch, we looked at some objects that had been excavated and guessed what they were and what year they came from. I really enjoyed that trip!” Hayden said, with a big smile.

29 “Another trip we went to see Nelson’s Ship ‘HMS Victory’ in Portsmouth. It cost £50,834 in those days to build, which is the equivalent of £60 million now! I think that is what she said, it certainly was a lot and more than most people have.” Hayden looked amazed. “The best part was being able to eat in the officer’s mess, as the vessel is still listed as a Navy Ship and still manned. They have nearly replaced every single timber log and plank on the ship, except the strut that Nelson supposedly died on. There is no record of where he actually died but this is where all the clues lead to.” Hayden shuddered. “Apparently the ship’s officers were casually walking up and down the Ship out in the open when a French Musketeer got a lucky good shot at Nelson and hit him in the head. Nelson was the Admiral of the Fleet, not of the Ship itself, so he wasn’t running the ship.” Hayden asserted. “The last trip we went on before the unwanted ending was the ‘Tank Museum’

Nellie’s tinted windows prevented a few scares at Bovington where we finalised our presentations while looking at some very big powerful tanks. We even got to go on the ‘Chieftain’. This tank was created for the Cold War and could fire every 6 seconds compared to the Russian every 8 seconds. The Chieftain was the most powerful tank of its time and quite possibly it still is. I got to sit in the Commander’s seat of the tank!” continued Hayden. “We also got to learn some tank movements with some remotecontrol tanks. This was lots of fun!” “The dreaded day came where we would have to present our speeches that we had created for the sponsors of the Blue Skies and our parents. We were very nervous. Luckily, I had a skeleton to look at instead of the crowd, as I was talking about our trip to Winchester University! Everyone did their speeches and we all got through in the end! Then me and some of the other Blue Skies graduates met up and had fun for the rest of the day. I feel that the Blue Skies programme has helped me to create presentations and help in speaking to crowds. Every one of us has created a team spirit with each other and I feel that we could push each other through anything. I am looking forward to continuing for the next 2 years with the JET and Blue Skies. How lucky am I!”, Hayden proclaimed. Nellie was delighted too. By Debbie Corney

The Rotary Dorset Bike Ride: For families and the hardened cyclists The 6th Rotary Dorset Bike Ride in aid of Cancer Research UK is to be held on Sunday 17th September. The ride caters for all levels from the family to the hardened cyclists with 8 routes from just 10 miles up to the challenging Dorset 102 mile Etape. The event is very well organised with plenty of marshals, excellent signage with refreshment stops along the way. We have full back up support including first aid, bike repair or pickup in case of problems. The start and finish is at Longthorns Campsite (next to Monkey World) where there is plenty of parking, and onsite catering plus free massages for riders afterwards. The event has so far raised in excess of £150,000 for Cancer Research UK and other charities. Although raising sponsorship is not compulsory we hope riders will raise funds for cancer and there are rewards and prizes for those that do, including free cycle jerseys and T-Shirts, plus 6 months membership to the Springfield Leisure club in Wareham.

Tastes so good... Risotto
Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish, that’s quick to prepare and yet a satisfying meal. Great for using up leftovers, why not experiment to add new ingredients?
Ingredients for 2 servings 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic 2 small sticks of celery Half a red pepper, chopped into small pieces 1 vegetable stock cube 200ml boiling water 4 small handfuls of risotto rice Bacon (optional to make a non-vegetarian version) Parmesan cheese to top (if required)
1. Heat some oil in a pan. 2. Lightly brown the onion and add the garlic 3. Add the rest of the chopped ingredients and fry for a couple of minutes until slightly softened. 4. Add the risotto rice and fry, stirring regularly for another couple of minutes. 5. Add the stock cube to the boiling water and pour onto the rice dish. 6. Cover with a lid and reduce the heat. 7. Once all the liquid has been absorbed, your dish is ready to serve.

On Your Plot Hoarding
It’s hard to remain excited when you’ve had courgette at every meal for a week, and marvellous though raspberries are there is a limit to just how many you can eat at once. Take a bit of time to store your harvest and you can be enjoying home grown right through the winter.
Jobs for August :-
• Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign. • Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. • Keep harvesting those courgettes! • Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage • Strawberry runners that were potted up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now. If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgettes and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very often they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same time. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a little planning and now is the time to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been lifted and
left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, also work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting. A good size freezer is a real boon for making the most of your produce. Blanching and then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing! Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what better gift than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how little information there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful little book, that deals with just this question is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with information about how to store just about anything and a great addition to any gardeners library. Happy harvesting!

All-New Peugeot 3008 SUV GT Line By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
It is not unusual to see some big changes between an older and newer generation of the same model, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks radically different to the outgoing one. That exiting generation, introduced in 2008, was a frumpy, chubby SUV that did little to inspire buyers. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a different animal, burying the clumsy image of the last car six-feet under and achieving the European Car of the Year crown. Sometimes it can be difficult to separate SUVs out on the road because most of them drive alike. Many are set up for comfort, and that’s what the all-new 3008 is tuned for. The small steering wheel and light handling gives a feeling of sprightliness, even if that’s not the case, as it’s a tall, heavy car. However; that’s not a complaint, the designers and engineers have done a good job covering the traditional flaws of an SUV’s dynamics. There’s a wholesome medley of engines on offer, as with most Peugeot models: two petrol’s in the shape of a 131PS 1.2-litre unit and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are a couple of turbo diesel engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. What suits you best is largely going to depend on what sort of driving you do. Short urban trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol more, whereas longer journeys will fit the potential 70mpg obtainable from the 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the 1.2 petrol in GT Line spec with 131PS, fitted with a manual gearbox. Behind the wheel, things feel dynamic, and the weighting of the steering is spot on. The car grips bitumen like a cat’s claws cling to flesh, and mid-range pulling power is good, so you can pick up the pace easily. The six-speed transmission is slick shifting, and the car delivers a hushed ride. Tyre roar and wind whistle is kept out of the cabin, too. All this just adds to the 3008’s sense of refinement. The Peugeot offers a composed ride with seats that provide the sort of comfort and support required for long distance motoring. Furthermore, the car’s suspension sops up potholes without complaining. Significantly, the all-new 3008 doesn’t tip into bends. Indeed, body roll is very well contained. This surprised me, as smaller SUVs aren’t always the type of vehicle to stay so unflustered on twisty tarmac.
The new 3008 comes in four levels of trim: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. Factory fitted safety kit includes automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. The GT Line hasn’t got any extra safety equipment - just sportier looks. But it has all the safety kit you really need, and as with all 3008s, it has a top five-star Euro NCAP safety score. A car can look great and have all the equipment in the world crammed into it – but it’s no good if it isn’t economical and it doesn’t drive decently. There are no concerns to be had in this area with the 3008 SUV. The 1.2 GT Line’s average fuel consumption of 55.4mpg and 117g/km of CO2 means low running costs, combined with effective performance. 0-62mph is achieved in 10.8 seconds and the Pug’s maximum speed is 117mph. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV’s entry price is £21,795, but expect to fork out £25,655 for the petrol-powered GT Line I drove. A basic Nissan Qashqai costs £18,545, and the new SEAT Ateca is priced from £17,990. But I think the 3008’s extra cost is justified because it feels more upmarket inside than these two rivals. Cabin materials include brushed chrome, large areas of carbon decoration and textiles. They even cover some areas less commonly found in SUVs, such as the dashboard inlay. It’s all very contemporary and attractive. The Peugeot is just as stylish outside, and it drives well, while delivering a comfortable ride for all.
