Charity Providing Free Audiobook Memberships in Dorset Whether it’s discovering a new story or revisiting a classic, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in a book. Studies have shown that reading can improve wellbeing and improve relationships with others, as well as reducing the symptoms of depression or dementia.* But, when you find reading print or holding a book difficult, how can you keep reading? Audiobooks may have the answer. Listening to an audiobook removes the difficulty in decoding words, holding up a book, or turning pages, so you can relax and escape into another world. Listening Books is a national UK charity who provide an audiobook library service for anyone who finds that an illness, disability, specific learning difficulty or mental health condition affects reading print or holding books. They currently have free memberships available for anyone living in Dorset who would like to join
the service, but may not be able to cover the standard membership fees of between £20 and £45 per year. There’s no financial proof needed, but they do ask for a selfdeclaration that this cost would be a barrier to joining. Their library has over 8,000 audiobooks, including bestselling authors for all ages like J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Lee Child, David Walliams, Jojo Moyes, Jeff Kinney, and many more! Plus, they record exclusive educational titles to support the National Curriculum in their professional studios, so they aren’t available anywhere else. Audiobooks are available to download through an app available for tablets or smartphones, to stream online, or sent direct through the letterbox on MP3 CD with no postage costs or late fees. Heritage: Hunting, Shooting & Fishing In the January 2018 issue, mention was made of the two John Turner-Turners who owned the Avon Cottage (seen here), later replaced by today’s Castle, from 1863 to 1901. The son, John Edmund Unett Phillipson TurnerTurner, inherited the Castle and its lands at 21 in February 1877. JTT2’s book ”Three Years Hunting and Trapping in the Great North West” tells a remarkable story of three trips to America, but omits any precise dates. In 2007 an original was borrowed from the British Library. Illustrations are credited to a Constance Hoare, but the book itself is dedicated to his wife, “my constant companion during these travels”. Her maiden name was Eleanor Hannay, whom he married in Kensington in 1882. She is referred to throughout the book as “L” but her diary is said to have been saved during the third trip when a canoe overturned. Perhaps the drawings are based on her diary entries, as they seem so precise, suggesting a more intimate knowledge. JTT2’s signed studio portrait in his trapper’s outfit is the frontispiece of the book, obviously also related to the years spent working and surviving in the Canadian Rockies on the third trip. In censuses, we have him living at the estate cottage used as a school house, while his mother Dora (maiden name “Hoare”) is found at the entrance lodge near the A31 as late as 1900, probably demolished as late as when the Spur Road was built, in 1969. The present Avon Drive lodge did not appear until the early 1900s, after the estate had passed into the hands of Colonel Peacock.
When researching in 2007, transcripts by the late Ted Baker revealed gaps in appearance as JP from 1880 onwards. Other records indicated reported attendances at local events. Three blank periods emerged, offering dates for the trips to America. The first was instigated by an old school friend returning from Virginia with tales of big game hunting. JTT’s visit appears to be September to December 1883, the return trip marred by a propeller shaft problem on the White Star liner “Celtic” soon after departing New York. Passing ships declined assistance, sails were set, until, in JTT2’s version, almost out of food, water and lamp oil, close to Ireland, a sister ship took them in tow. In a book about the Line, this was “Britannic”, reaching Liverpool on 15th January1884. The second trip, this time to Wyoming, fits a gap August to December 1884. The long Rockies working visit, instigated because “my financial exchequer … seriously undermined … suffered a final relapse”, seems to start about April 1886, returning around June 1988. They travel to Victoria on Vancouver Island on the west coast by rail, accompanied this time by a young, rather short, underkeeper Fred, who is constantly getting into scrapes who generates

15 innumerable amusing tales throughout this major section of the book. Far too much to tell in this article, I can only suggest that you come into the Meeting House and read my three-page illustrated paper dated November 2007, as well as several other items about all three journeys within the Avon Castle section of my ”Of Maps and Memories” File H06B. This file also includes a copy of the map within the book that traces their circuitous route, and the sites of their two self-built winter camps shown here. Eleanor is here seen in her “only dress”, that somehow survived the entire trip. I seem to recall that this was saved mostly for special occasions, as a more modest apparel for, say, a trip into town to collect provisions. As daughter of a well-travelled military man, more casual clothes were no doubt not unfamiliar to her. Meanwhile, several others depict the neverending instances of poor young Fred’s
clumsiness in comparison with JTT2’s apparent expertise. Aged 22 a Fred Corbin appears in the 1881 census as an Underkeeper lodging with the Head Keeper. Is this our man, aged about 25, who joins the couple on this escape from the problems of the estate? At the end of the period, Fred is given advice how to return home, but then completely disappears from the scene. However, in 2010 a lady from Gosport visited the Meeting House. Her handwritten follow up letter provided me with a detailed family history back to 1791, wherein Fred was her paternal grandfather. He was born in Poulner, his father a railway worker, but Fred is a blank from age 23 to 32. Then he appears as a gamekeeper on Brownsea Island, and he has a wife Mary from Ireland. Later records have him as underkeeper, later Head Gamekeeper, for six years from 1894 at Hatfield Hyde. From 1906 to 1911 they had various homes around St. Albans, he working at Gorhambury, the Earl of Verulam’s private estate. By 1929 she says they had separated, having had eight children, the last born in St. Albans in 1908. In 1928 he is recorded as a retired land agent, but “deceased” on two family documents dated 1926 and 1929. Sounds like a rather sad ending for him. John Hawkins

Understanding Investments: What are your choices at retirement? “With greater choice comes greater responsibility”a play on a famous quote by Voltaire, but so relevant for the financial options now available since “Freedom and Choice in Pensions Legislation” was introduced in 2015. Now I would like to simplify the high-level options available. Decisions about retiring can be driven by a number of factors including health, availability of work, enjoyment at work, family circumstances and fulfilling long held dreams & aspirations. The decision may be to reduce hours and ease your way in, or to fully retire. Whatever the circumstances, affordability will be considered but often in a haphazard, ad-hoc way. Limiting or ceasing the ability to earn an income can be a scary thought and is certainly a huge decision. Understanding the effect of inflation on your income needs throughout retirement (at 3% inflation your expenditure will double over 24 years) and other significant capital requirements needs more than a “finger in the air” analysis. At Lonsdale Wealth Management, we utilize cash-flow planning tools to help clients understand whether retirement is affordable and just as importantly, sustainable. Once affordability has been identified, decisions on the most effective way to generate retirement income can be made. Retirement Income is divided into guaranteed income and flexible income. Guaranteed income would include Defined Benefit Pension Schemes, the State Pension and Pension Annuities. Flexible income includes Pension Drawdown and income from capital and investments, with rental income classed between the two, as it is secure but can be subject to void periods. Expenditure is split into basic and discretionary. In an ideal world, all basic expenditure and all regular discretionary expenditure would be covered by guaranteed income, but if that isn’t achievable at least all basic expenditure should be covered. You can currently access your defined contribution pension savings any time after age 55 although the minimum age is expected to increase to 57 in 2028 and remain 10 years below state pension age thereafter. You have four broad choices and for each option, 25% of
your pension savings can be paid tax-free: 1. Secure Income Exchange your pension savings Howard Goodship for an annuity provided by an insurance company which is then guaranteed for the rest of your life (with options including a dependant’s annuity). Annuity income is subject to income tax. 2. Flexible Access Take the income you need when you need it. The money remains invested and you draw a variable level of income for as long as your money lasts. Withdrawals are subject to income tax. 3. Cash Payment Have all your savings paid as a cash lump sum, with 75% of the fund subject to income tax. 4. Leave it for now There is no requirement to draw your savings from your pension and the fund can be passed down to a nominated beneficiary (and through different generations), often outside of your estate and therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax. The 25% tax free lump sum is lost if not taken during lifetime, but your funds can be paid tax-free on death before 75 (taxable on death after 75). As you can see, there is now much more choice available and pension savings are another tax advantageous wrapper to consider alongside other tax efficient products including ISAs. When planning your retirement strategy, the whole picture should be considered to achieve the most tax-efficient and sustainable outcome. Get Dorset Buzzing!
This spring, Dorset Wildlife Trust is embarking on its biggest ever campaign to get over 2,000 people in Dorset doing at least one thing to help pollinators in their garden, and help Get Dorset Buzzing. But, why are we so concerned? It’s widely known that bees are in decline, yet they are arguably one of the most important insect groups on earth, helping to carry out the process of pollination which is responsible for one in three mouthfuls of food we eat, including chocolate, coffee and strawberries. But it’s not just bees that you will see flitting between flowers in your garden; butterflies, hoverflies, moths and some beetles also carry out the pollination process, so it’s important that we create much needed space for them all to thrive. One of the main reasons for the decline of bees and other pollinators is loss of habitat. Wildflower meadows used to provide prime pollinator habitat, but we’ve lost 97% of them since the 1930s. The good news is that there’s something we

can do to help. Our gardens and local green spaces are potential mini nature reserves, so if we can provide the space and the food, they will come! The Adventures of Daichi
The Dorset Publications Camper Van “Daichi, The Dashing Dude” has finally made it! The NEW Dorset Publications Campervan has travelled across barren land and rough seas to get here. All the way from Japan, just to be with us. We love him! He is pearly white and is still wearing his posh kimono. Nellie had long skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, whereas Daichi likes to think he is rather sophisticated, debonair, and has an eye for the girl vans. In fact, “The Dashing Dude” as we have nicknamed him, is a play on words as he believes he is good looking, stylish and fashionable. It is all part of his charm. He also loves to run around and have fun. So, dashing he is, and otherwise known as “Dash” to his friends. Daichi is his official Japanese name, (dai) meaning “big, great” combined with (chi) meaning “wisdom, intellect”. As Daichi is full of himself and a little over confident, this seems rather appropriate. He even speaks Japanese when we switch on his purring, seductive engine. “Ha Dor!” and other words I have yet to discover the meaning of, he expels in a rather high pitched, very cute voice. (Don’t tell him I

Daichi gets the thumbs up! said that, boys do not like it.) We hope you like reading about his exploits and antics as he whisks us to exciting places around England and particularly here on the Southern Coast. Here’s to having some family fun… Our first trip was to Portland just along the coast from Weymouth. We had never been there before, and boy were we lucky with the weather. Dash was extremely happy. So were we. We climbed all the 165 muscle tasking steps up the Portland Bill lighthouse. What views from the top! Currently there is the amazing huge magnifying lamp which shines across the English Channel to warn our ships at sea of potential danger. The lamp will soon be replaced by a more modern system of LED lights. Sad really, but times move on as we all know too well. The majestic lighthouse demanding attention on the clifftop also has that eerie foghorn sound which haunts the waves in times of fog. There have indeed been a massive 113 shipwrecks along this coast, due to its shallow reefs and the strong Portland tidal race. Daichi decided to keep his nifty wheels firmly fixed on the solid ground.

29 A meal overlooking the crystal blue sea was a well-deserved treat after all that climbing. The café was a welcome sight. We ate outside! Portland of course is famous for its Portland Stone. Dash, knowing what boys are like and having empathy with Hayden our 15 year old active teenager arranged a “Geo Cache” hunt for us to do. Geo Caching is a modern-day treasure hunt. There are hundreds of walks you can find online. Some are still free, but there is now a small charge of around £20 for the year for the keener walkers. It is a fun way to follow coordinates and eventually find a box (the treasure!). The stones enroute, carved by artists, were quite amazing. A Falling man, chairs, hearths, octopus, bear, a whale and lots more. My favourite was the mythical Portland Dog Beast, the Roy Dog. Carved by Damien Briggs, this beast has fiery eyes, one green, one red and it was said that he lived in the Cave Hole where he would drag any travellers passing by, into its watery hideout. Brrr…. It even has the eyes of its victims embedded into its stony fur. Daichi is beginning to wonder about us Brits… We love our legends don’t we. Another way to explore our incredible homeland are Treasure Trails. Again, available online to buy at just £6.99

The Roy Dog in Tout Quarry Park per walk. Daichi chose the Pirates Graveyard one for us. (Is he trying to tell us something?). This was an intriguing walk along the coast and through the graveyard with skull and crossbones engraved in the stones. Contrary to popular belief, these are not pirates’ graveyards, but just images to ward off the evil spirits in the afterlife. The cove we passed, Church Ope, was gorgeous. We would love to go back there. There are stunning views from all over Portland. It really is a fantastic place to visit. It has seen busier times, with the Naval Base and the famous 18 mile long Chesil Beach where the American troops embarked on their journey to Nazi occupied France in the second World War. My Dad aged 83 told me that he, his Mum and sister regularly travelled to Portland all the way from Hull to see his Dad who was stationed there in the Navy. He remembered a day when a German plane was flying down the coast, being fired at by our anti-aircraft guns from the beach. The exploding shells got closer and closer, until the plane dived and escaped! Today it is a gorgeous stretch of pebbled beach with crashing waves and wonderful sunsets. Daichi is ecstatic to be here with us. He thoroughly enjoyed his first trip and is very excited about where he will transport us to next… where will that be? By Debbie Corney

• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Wimborne Minster Buskers Bash A fore-runner to the Wimborne Minster Folk Festival, this event welcomes Buskers to a number of street venues throughout the beautiful market town of Wimborne Minster. Easter Food & Craft Fayre AFCB Annual Food & Craft Fayre will be held on Easter Monday 22nd April 2019. The fayre will begin at 11am and end at 4pm, with plenty of arts and crafts on sale, as well as some of Dorset’s finest produce. Dazzle & The Art of Defence This major new exhibition contextualises the artist Norman Wilkinson’s First World War ‘Dazzle’ schemes of disruptive camouflage against the wider contribution of the arts and creative industries to the defence of Britain in wartime. In 1917 when U-Boat attacks threatened to knock Britain out of the war, Wilkinson persuaded the Admiralty that patterns painted on the side of the ships would confuse U-Boat commanders as to the direction and speed of the vessels. A team of artists were then recruited to create the ‘Dazzle’ designs and soon ships were sailing out with bold colourful designs. When? Until 25th April 2019 Where?
