The Deceptive Cuttlefish The closest most people come to a cuttlefish is when their white ‘bones’ wash up on beaches after rough weather. These are the evolutionary remains of the animal’s shell, as cuttlefish are molluscs, relatives of the snails in your garden. Way back in the evolutionary past, their protective shell was internalised and then evolved into the cuttlefish bone, which is used to provide the animal with buoyancy in the sea. By regulating how much gas the bone contains they can move up or down in the water without having to expend energy on swimming. If you pick one up it feels light. Cuttlefish bones are not the only thing that makes this animal extraordinary. They are recognised as intelligent animals, indeed, research has shown that they can be more intelligent than cats and dogs. Capable of counting at an equivalent level as a 4 year old child, they can also solve puzzles, negotiate mazes and plan ahead. to get what they want – something that only a handful of species, including ourselves, are known to do. Cuttlefish communicate using the colours and patterns on their skin, which they can change instantaneously. This is especially used in courtship, when males compete for a female. Male cuttlefish have been filmed displaying female patterning on one side of their body (where a competing male can see it) whilst at the same time displaying to the female on their other side that he is an interested male. By deceiving the male cuttlefish into believing it is a female and therefore no threat, it avoids a physical battle, whilst at the same time giving the female his ‘come hither’ signals. While divers regularly encounter and interact with cuttlefish in our coastal waters, most people do not have the opportunity to meet these most interesting of animals. However at the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre in Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset Wildlife Trust had a baby cuttlefish in its aquarium. It is one that washed ashore as an egg and subsequently hatched in the aquarium where it grew rapidly ready for release last year. Heritage: An End to War? On 8th May 1945, the nation naturally celebrated the end of the war in Europe, yet much was still left to do. That included the battles still to come in the Far East as the Japanese fought desperately and without fear of death, resisting allied troops on several fronts, ours considering themselves the “Forgotten Army”. It was not until 15th August that the Emperor finally conceded defeat, following the devastating results of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These were an inevitable outcome of American fears of massively increased losses were they to invade the Japanese mainland, given their experiences with their fanatical opponents at Midway and Okinawa, and the deadly kamikaze pilots. Eventually this war was over, and we could all concentrate on restoring a world where so many had died, including unknown numbers of civilians, potentially more than those who died fighting for their countries. As so-called victors, things
were no better for the civilian populations of their own countries. Here in Britain we faced enormous national debts, continued rationing due to food shortages, and broken families whose menfolk, both young and old, would not return or had suffered severe injuries both physical and mental, or atrocious treatment. For many it was a repeat of the situation in the 1920s, after the “War to End All Wars” that was apparently “won” in 1918. My special August 2019 “Lest We Forget” exhibition at the Meeting House reminded visitors of the uncertainties throughout Europe that provoked public concern at endless attempts at appeasement that eventually led to frantic re-armament before the world was once again fighting for their diverse principles. Preparations included the issuing of gasmasks, as seen here, and the evacuation of children to voluntary foster parents. As I write here in April 2020, having watched Her Majesty the Queen’s broadcast, she too drew on her memories as she reminded us of our common cause in dealing with the effects of this latest “invader”. Boris Johnson now faces a mammoth task, recalling memories of the stirring speeches of Winston Churchill from those equally dark days in 1940. At Ringwood Gateway we will have continued to be reminded of those who gave their lives during the two world wars by illumination of the customised replacement Lantern of Remembrance on any day of the year on which any of the 163 servicemen plus one nurse whose name is on the Ringwood War Memorial gave their life. They include two WW1 men

from our parish, Royal Marine Sergeant Fred Willcox at Gallipoli, and Telegraphist George Brackley, a victim of the “Spanish” flu epidemic. Recently it has been suggested to me that this was actually brought to Europe on US troopships, but, given this year’s pandemic, it could actually have started anywhere. In 1932, we became an independent civil Parish, and the eight names from here were eventually remembered on a plaque, first inside the original 1912 “All Saints” Church, later transferred in the 1960s to the present one.
This year I plan to first deal with the lead up to both VE and VJ day. My thoughts will then draw attention to the never-ending efforts of our service personnel who are continually called upon to represent our values, both at home and throughout the world, some of whom continue to make the supreme sacrifice on our behalf. All the Avon Valley memorials will also be displayed. My photographs were taken in 2019. Once again, the local branch of the Royal British Legion will inevitably be involved in their fund-raising for the Poppy Appeal, initially on the forecourt of the Meeting House. The traditional service will be at the Parish Church on Remembrance Sunday followed by the march through the town to the War Memorial. I am not aware of any local family having incurred any post-war loss or suffering as a result of this never-ending problem that mankind imposes upon their fellows. If there are, please contact me at the Meeting House with some details, and pictures if possible. A suitable memorial item can then be added to the display, and subsequently incorporated within the archives. BE ASSURED, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. John Hawkins

STAR GAZING Welcome to the November Stargazing Page. Each month I’ll be describing astronomical events that are happening overhead in our beau ful night skies. The majority of events are viewable just by stepping outside on a cloudless night and looking up, but some may require a par cular vantage point e.g. a clear view to the west. Occasionally, viewings will benefit from the use of binoculars or a small telescope if available, but all can be enjoyed without either. International Space Station All sightings for early November occur between the chilly hours of 4a.m. and 6a.m. After November 20th the ISS is visible every evening after 5p.m., often twice in one night. Some of the brightest passes are around 5.40p.m. on the 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th November, all rising from the west or southwest. Please note timings are subject to change, therefore I recommend checking www.heavens-above.com for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to Bournemouth. Those of you hoping to use the predicted times for ISS overhead passes in September may have noticed they weren’t accurate. This was because the astronauts on board had to perform a last-minute ‘avoidance manoeuvre’ to ensure that they were not hit by a large piece of space debris left over from a 2018 Japanese rocket. The procedure was carried out effectively and no damage was sustained to the space station or the crew. See all eight planets of the Solar System in one day! November provides a rare opportunity to see all eight planets within 24 hours, with suggested viewing timings of 6a.m., 6p.m. and 9p.m. Binoculars or a small telescope will be required to spot Uranus and Neptune. To prevent moonlight from washing out the fainter planets, viewing on a cloudless night between 8 – 20th November is recommended. Mercury and Venus Mercury and Venus are currently visible in the early morning and the best time to spot them is around 6a.m. early in the month, and 6.15a.m. later in the month. Mercury will be quite close to the Sun and hard to spot as dawn breaks, and it will also be quite low on the horizon, therefore a clear view east, or an elevated position (such as a first-floor balcony or open window) is essential. A skychart or app may be helpful to prevent confusing it with the nearby star, Spica. Venus won’t be confused with anything as it’s the brightest thing in the sky after the Sun, Moon and ISS! Be mindful to finish observing before sunrise (around 7a.m.) and always avoid looking directly at the Sun. Earth Just look down! Mars Mars is rapidly moving away from us now, but is still a distinguishable redorange object in the constellation of Pisces, a part of the sky with few bright stars, so it’s hard to miss. Look high in the sky towards the south at 9p.m. Jupiter & Saturn Still hanging on in our darkening autumnal skies, the gas giants are best viewed in the southwest around 6.p.m. before they sink below the horizon. Saturn is the dimmer object on the upper left of the bright, yellowish Jupiter. As an added bonus, Pluto, the ex-ninth planet is currently located very close to Jupiter as seen from our line-of-sight on Earth. It is difficult to spot, looking like a faint background star even with a good telescope. However, if you are looking in the direction of Jupiter, you are also looking in the direction of Pluto, so you can sort of tick it off the list! Uranus and Neptune Both the ice giants look like blue-green-grey discs in a pair of binoculars. They are best viewed when looking for Mars around 9p.m. Uranus is situated within Aries and is positioned left of Mars, whilst Neptune is in Aquarius to the right of Mars. As they are very hard to locate it is recommended that keen observers look up positioning charts that are freely available on the internet. Moon November’s Full Moon falls on the 30th, and has a number of names. In North America it is known as the Beaver or Frost Moon; to the ancient Celts it was the Dark Moon; and to Medieval peoples it was called the Snow Moon. VENUS

Pigs: It’s Pannage Time!
During the autumn months, it’s not an uncommon sight to see pigs roaming the forest floor. The reason for this is one of pannage! Pannage is the practice of releasing domestic pigs into a forest (also known as ‘Common of mast’), and goes all the way back to the time of William the Conqueror, who founded The New Forest in 1079. The pigs are released onto the forest to eat fallen acorns, beechmast, chestnuts and other nuts; green acorns in particular are poisonous to the New Forest ponies and cattle which roam the forest the majority of the year. Up to 600 pigs and piglets will work their way through the forest eating the acorns and nuts from the forest floor. It is the only time of year that the pigs are allowed to ‘roam’ the open forest, the rest of the time they are kept in their smallholdings by the commoners. In the 19th century the number of pigs released for pannage was as high as 6,000. Pannage is no longer carried out in many areas of the country but can still be observed every year here in the New Forest National Park. Pannage lasts for a minimum of 60 days and is vital because acorns are poisonous in large quantities to cattle and ponies and can lead to cholic. Pigs however are believed to spit out the toxic skins and enjoy eating the acorns.
You can usually find the pigs roaming the forest floors from around the third week in September, or whenever the acorns begin to drop from the beautiful oak and beech trees. The exact Pannage dates are decided by the New Forest Verderers and the Forestry Commission based on seasonal variations. This years Pannage is due to take place from 14th September 2020 for a minimum of two months. During times of exceptional acorn falls, the pannage season is usually extended by the Verderers. New Forest pigs must also be fitted with a ring through their nose which still enables them to forage through leaf litter and surface vegetation but stops them from rooting into the ground with their snouts causing damage to the Forest. Some of the different breeds of pig that you can find out on the New Forest include: Tamworth, Gloucestershire Old Spot, the British Saddleback and the Wessex Saddleback. There isn’t a specific breed of New Forest pig. During the pannage season also keep a look out for the local artisan bakeries, farm shops and shops that sell piggy-shaped biscuits to celebrate this most ancient of New Forest practices. Understanding Investments: Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) An Individual Saving Account (ISA) is a tax efficient wrapper for saving cash or investments. Whilst they have been around for over 20 years (since 1999 when they succeeded PEP’s and TESSA’s), the features and benefits can still be misunderstood. To simplify matters I’ll split them into two (for this article we will ignore Lifetime ISAs and Junior ISAs): Cash ISAs: These act much like a savings account, so capital is not at risk (within protected limits) and interest is earned. However, since the introduction of the Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) the benefits of cash ISAs has somewhat diminished for basic rate taxpayers who can now earn up to £1,000 per annum in interest tax free from their non-ISA accounts (this reduces to £500 for a higher rate taxpayer and is lost for those who pay the additional rate). In addition, the rates of interest available have been falling for a number of years and in 2020 are now at all time lows. This low interest rate environment could remain for a number of years as shown by the average rates available for longer term fixed rate accounts (1% for 2 years, 1.1% for 3 years and 1.4% for 5 yearssource Money Saving Expert). What alternatives are available for clients who need an income from their savings or who are aiming for capital growth to meet or beat inflation? Investment ISAs: The capital value can fluctuate but the degree of fluctuation can be controlled by the level of risk selected at outset. Assuming a medium level of risk, the assets would typically be split 50% into equities (medium to high risk) and 50% into bonds, gilts and cash (lower risk). Currently the yield earned through dividends and interest could average around 2.5% (Source: L&G Multi-Index 5 Fund 1.8% and LGT Vestra Strategic Income
portfolio 3.3%) which can be reinvested for growth or taken Howard Goodship as income. The capital value of the investments will fluctuate depending on investment market returns but if invested for over 5 years we would expect the capital value to be maintained and ideally grow to keep pace with inflation. If the yield is re-invested, then we would expect the capital growth to exceed inflation. However, investment returns are not guaranteed, and it is important to understand that the risk of capital loss is why there is the opportunity to earn a higher return than cash. The investment choice in Investment ISAs is wide. Some funds focus on delivering a higher level of income and others offer little income but focus on capital growth. Risks will vary significantly, and this is where professional advice can be invaluable. One final note; since 2015 ISAs can be passed onto a spouse or civil partner. This was an excellent development and the surviving partner is eligible for an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) and can then continue to benefit from the tax-free status of the deceased’s ISA holdings. She was nominated as she was living with a bathroom in need of a complete overhaul, with a make shift shower and constant leaks from bath time splashing. She is taking care of her twin boys who are severely autistic as a single mother, after sadly losing her husband while she was pregnant. Volkswagen has improved its electric e-Up! Jack Evans finds out how. What is it? In the race to gain EV supremacy, it seems that many manufacturers have forgotten that often the best application of electric technology is in smaller city cars – such as Volkswagen’s new e-Up! EV, which has been given bigger batteries to improve that all-important range. What’s new? The exterior of the e-Up! doesn’t look particularly different from the car it replaces, with the bulk of the changes being under the skin. As well as boosting the battery count to improve range, VW has added the ability to fast-charge the car. What’s under the bonnet? The e-Up! has an electric motor linked to a 32.3kWh battery. Power reaches the front wheels through a single-speed gearbox, and in total it pushes out 80.5bhp and a healthy 210Nm of torque. The e-Up takes 11.6 seconds from 0-60mph with a maximum speed of 81mph, with a claimed 159 miles between charges. Combined charging system technology gives an 80 per cent charge in just an hour from zero, via a 40kW DC charger. A standard domestic wall box takes four hours, while using a three-pin plug needs around 16 hours for a full charge. What’s it like to drive? The e-Up! is fun to drive, with the zippy acceleration you only get from an EV. The steering and the ride are good too. It’s nimble around town and unflustered even at higher motorway speeds.

Our five-door model granted easy access to the rear of the car and had adequate rear legroom, though headroom is limited for very tall passengers. What’s the spec like? Our test car came in at a reasonable £20,555 after the government’s plug-in car grant. Cruise control, parking sensors at both front and rear and a rear-view camera are standard, while a five-inch colour touchscreen system houses Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio. Volkswagen includes a 16amp charging cable for use at wall boxes and charge points, and a 10amp cable for mains charging. Verdict The plucky e-Up! has hit the nail on the head, and with around 150 miles per charge offers a genuinely usable range. The ability to fast charge means much shorter wait times if you do need to plug in. Most importantly, however, the e-Up! is fun, and that’s certainly an aspect that many EVs have missed from the process of driving.
How does it look? We like the undercover looks of the e-Up! Slim LED running lights up front help differentiate it, while the charging port is where you’d usually find the filler cap. The compact proportions lend the Up! to town driving and it’s a doddle to park. It’s conservatively styled for an electric vehicle but this should appeal to many. What’s it like inside? The cabin of the e-Up! is business as usual. The

The Dorset Publications Camper Van Daichi, the Dashing Dude, is our playful campervan who loves to take us out and dash us away to new and familiar places to have some family fun. Last month he did not disappoint. Many of us had holidays abroad cancelled, so what a great excuse to make the most of our wonderful English South Coast. Daichi was delighted to dash us to Devon for a week, away from it all. I love driving along the coast to Devon, taking in some amazing views along the top around Bridport and then having a stop and something to eat on the beach at Charmouth. Fossil finding at its best. I really know I am on holiday when we stop and look out to sea here. I can relax, unwind and start to leave the stresses behind. Bovisand Beach was where we were heading. We had never been before but as the holiday in Tenerife was cancelled by the flight company just a month prior, I had looked on Airbnb to find this gorgeous view of the sea from the small cottage at the top of the cliff. That was the one. It is all about the view for me. On arriving at Bovisand Beach, which is a stone’s throw away from Plymouth, I was not at all disappointed. It was incredible. You could see for miles. A Navy ship was anchored off the shore, there were swimmers, kayaks, stand up paddle boarders, sailing boats, motorboats and small ferries taking passengers to the idyllic looking villages of Cawsand and Kingsand opposite, across the bay. Truly delightful. In fact, when you sat down in the cottage

Watching the boats go by... and the tide was in it felt like we were on a boat in the middle of the sea - that is all we could see! We were lucky with the weather too. The previous week had been wet and windy, but this week looked much better, and it was! As a youngster, brought up in the North, rock pooling was a major delight. Dad and I used to pick winkles by the bucket load, literally, boil them and have them for tea. “Yum”, I say… “Ugh”, I can hear you say! It is a personal taste. This area had great rock pools and some caves too - when the tide was out. The first day on the beach was great. Hayden was able to get his race board out and practise his run into the sea at great speed (teenage boys…) while I lounged on the beach drinking coffee… one of my favourite occupations! Stephen put on his wetsuit and was off splashing about too. The sea rolled slowly, or not so slowly, back into the small bay and started to fill those rock pools with swishing (I love that sound) seawater and seaweed. There was rather a lot of seaweed due to the previous week’s storms, but that did not put us off. What we did not anticipate was the speed with which the sea crept in… we nearly had to swim our way back to the steps! All good fun. Us Brits do like to be dramatic at times! Back at the cottage we soaked in the sun on the decking overlooking the incredible bay below us. Where we had been sitting was now full of water. Thought

29 provoking… but I am a bit like that. An hour later, back to the other beach, where there was still some sand to sit on. Hayden could go charging back into the sea again. Watching the sunset, the rippling waves and the glittering sea with another coffee in hand was a great way to end our first day. Another day on the ‘other beach’ was decided and this time I did spend time in the rock pools which had small shoals of speedy fish and dancing seaweed. I could not find a crab! Not one. I was quite perturbed about that, so it gave me something to worry about! I think we must like problems, as we always seem to create them for ourselves. How funny. Three wonderful days on the beach. We were fully ‘unwound’. Now Hayden is a teenager, going into the sixth form, so uniform is no longer a requirement. Primark. He wanted to go to Primark. Wednesday was due to have some rain, so we planned our trip to Drake Circus, the shopping Centre in Plymouth, which of course has a Primark. Daichi, who had been keeping guard all week, was happy to take us shopping. However, I would not recommend a van in Plymouth. It is very difficult to park! The headroom in the multi storeys is not quite enough… and there is little parking for more than an hour anywhere else. Another problem – really!? Have to laugh. Finally, we managed to find a space for a maximum three hours. Primark was fun! I could not believe it. Literally
Rockpooling, whatever the weather!
Boys with their toys! within half an hour all three of us had found what we were looking for… and more… and all at a great price. Since you cannot try anything on at this odd time we are living in, you either like it or you don’t, you buy it, or you don’t. Simple. The times I have spent trying clothes on, for hours, to come away with one item if I am lucky. This time, no choice, take it or leave it. There may be some advantages to some of the restrictions which have at the moment! Not only that, I am now trendy Mum! Leggings, ‘Converse’ looking shoes (I used to call them sandshoes, but that is not cool these days…) and a gorgeous cardigan that looks hand knitted and reminds me of one my Grandma made me a long time ago! Hayden got his red shoes to match his shirt and more skinny jeans too. Stephen even bought shoes and a pair of trousers. Success – we were all smiles! The National Marine Aquarium was another really enjoyable day. What fish, wow! We also went on the Merry-Go-Round, Mary Poppins style, by the sea wall. It just had to be done. A meal out, just passed the Plymouth Lido, which had reopened for the summer, in a restaurant with almost 360 degree views of the sea. What more could we want? The whole week was a hit. Simple fun on our British Isle. Daichi loves to take us away, recharge those batteries and then back to reality, still smiling. It took us over ten hours to travel home as we kept stopping enroute to take in all the different places. Lyme Regis is another family favourite, so we ended our holiday there on the beach, with another meal watching the sun setting before finally driving home. Where will Daichi take us next, I wonder? For tech shoppers, November is Gadget Christmas. That’s because the last Friday of the month, the 27th of November, is Black Friday. Black Friday is when online shops and many high street retailers offer amazing discounts on all kinds of products. And the discounts can be massive, with hundreds of pounds off high-end laptops, big TVs and other bigticket purchases.

The name Black Friday is a little misleading because many of the retailers now run deals the week leading up to Black Friday and/or the week after.

Many of the deals are genuine, but it’s important to do a little homework because some of them are a little creative. Some deals are rather like the supermarket wine promotions where the price of a £6 bottle of wine is briefly raised to £9; the shop then goes back to the original price and sticks a ‘Save £3.00!’ sticker on it. In tech, the same thing can happen with prices going up just before Black Friday to create a discount that isn’t really a discount. Another common trick is to quote a recommended retail price that nobody sensible ever paid. For example, a TV supposedly reduced from £1,799 to £999 may well have been on sale for £1,099 for the last six months. You’re still getting a saving, but it’s not as exciting as the shop wants you to think.

As with any sale, don’t let the prospect of a big discount persuade you to buy something you don’t want or need, and if you pay by credit card make sure you pay it off as soon as you can. The interest on some cards can easily wipe out your Black Friday savings.

“Dealing with death is one of the hardest parts of life” This year in particular we at Dorset and Wight have been inundated with enquiries concerning the worry of potential liability for long term care fees, along with an increase in requests for guidance on Lasting Power of Attorney’s.

On Your Plot Feeling Fruity
Few flavours compare with that of fruit freshly picked from the garden. Much of the fruit available in the shops (particularly the supermarkets) has been grown for it’s ability to travel well rather than it’s flavour and may have been picked well before it’s arrival on the shelf. If you fancy apples from your own tree, or a bowl of raspberries fresh from the garden, now is the time to act.
Jobs for November :-
• Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. • Tidy up your greenhouse or polytunnel, wash out pots and seed trays before storing ready for the Spring • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot! Patience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I have to confess to having an inclination to move on with anything that requires more than a few months to give a decent crop, but with most fruit you just have to force yourself to take the long term view and now being the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile! Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space (but are a wonderfully attractive addition to your plot) while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to loose a lot of fruit to the birds.
Late autumn is an ideal time to add fruit to your plot as trees and bushes will be entering their dormant period. It is important to buy healthy plants and to ensure that they are dormant as they will transplant more successfully. If you are ordering from a reputable mail order nursery they are likely to arrange delivery to coincide with the best time for planting. You should also get instruction on how to plant and care for your new tree or bush. Trees such as apple or plum may be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator. When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Although these can be bought from nurseries Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year.
