Hopefully we have a ray of sunshine here in the magazine for you too with lots of good news and articles for you to read. Nellie took us to see our wonderful Jurassic Coast this month. We didn’t see any dinosaurs, but we certainly had a great time. There is so much to enjoy in this part of the world, we are so very lucky.
We certainly have had mixed weather recently and have even had some sunshine! Do you have a holiday planned this year, or are you going to relax at home with a good book and a cuppa? Whatever you decide, we do hope you are looking forward to it. We have a trip to Wales this month which we are definitely looking forward to. We are then going to stay local in the summer holidays as our little Rockley Park caravan is proving to be very successful.

First World War Memorial at All Saints Church, Southbourne Francis George Camp
In 1911 Francis George Camp was living at ‘Tralee’, Oxford Avenue, Southbourne with his widowed mother Jane Maria Camp and his wife Edith Amy Camp. Francis was a cabinet maker and his wife a dressmaker. By 1918 Edith had moved to 106, Paisley Road, Southbourne. Francis enlisted at Christchurch in 1914 and joined the 7th Field Company as a sapper in the Royal Engineers serving with the 4th Division. Initially held back from the original British Expeditionary Force to foil a possible German landing on English soil the division eventually sailed to France in late August 1914. Among other tasks Sappers dug trenches, laid communication lines and tunnelled under their own lines towards the enemy positions to blow up their defences. Tunnelling was dangerous and more so as close by German tunnellers were digging towards the British lines. Tunnels often collapsed burying the men who had to be dug out by their fellow engineers. The 7th Field Company saw their first action in the Battles of Marne, Aisne and Messines in 1914. By 1916 they were on the Somme and in 1917 at Arras, the Battles at Scarpe, capturing Wancourt Ridge, before moving north to Ypres and Passchendaele. By late 1917 there were fewer mining opportunities for the sappers and tunnel-based attacks had faded away. Sappers welcomed the chance to move above ground to carry out other duties, including acting as infantry men, but there were as many dangers above ground. By virtue of having captured the ground on the Western Front the Germans had first choice of where to dig their trenches. Choosing higher ground they not only had a tactical advantage but drier and more resilient trenches. French and British troops were forced to build their trenches in the worst conditions. Built lower down, often a few feet above sea level, soldiers encountered water two or three feet below the surface as they began to dig. Water-logged trenches were a constant problem for allied soldiers on the Western Front. The British trenches had no proper sanitation. Latrines were pits four to five feet deep, supposed to be filled in when they reached one foot in depth and new holes

dug but there often was not enough time and men used a nearby shell-hole. For drinking water soldiers were supplied with water bottles that could be refilled when they returned to reserve lines, but this was rarely enough for their needs and soldiers in the trenches often depended on impure water collected from shell-holes and other cavities to quench their thirst. Later the water was purified using chloride of lime but the men disliked the taste and the vulnerability to disease persisted as did the use of contaminated water. Disease was the great killer of World War 1. Common infections included dysentery, typhus and cholera, among others, as well as fungal conditions such as trench foot. Tens of thousands of men suffered from such diseases and were temporarily or permanently lost to the war effort. In 1917 alone 6,025 British soldiers were hospitalised suffering from dysentery, 15,214 with nephritis, 1660 with TB and 21,487 with frostbite. After four full years of fighting the conditions and the enemy to survive, Francis George Camp succumbed to dysentery on October 18th, 1918. One month before the Armistice. He was 33. The Dorset Directories Camper Van Nellie, the Dorset Directories Campervan is back in full swing. She loves taking us places and discovering new locations, as well as visiting some old favourites. This month she took us to our wonderful Jurassic Coast. How lucky are we to be so close to such a part of history with the ability to find fossils from literally millions of years ago! They are nearly as old as Nellie… Despite Nellie’s aging years and occasional aches and pains she still loves to learn. It keeps her young at heart you know. She never knew that this part of the Jurassic Coast is actually privately owned by the Weld Family who give us permission to walk on their land! I have to say we are very grateful. This family have owned the land since 1641 after Humphrey Weld, a direct ancestor of James Weld, who now owns the Lulworth Estate, bought Lulworth Castle and its extensive 12,000 acres of grounds from politician Thomas

Nellie gazes wistfully out to sea... Howard, 3rd Viscount Howard of Bindon. The family own 5 miles of the whole 95 mile stretch of coast between Exmouth in East Devon and Studland Bay in Dorset. This includes the famous Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, where Nellie took us. It had cost James £15,000 to rebuild the stairs down to Durdle Door in 2009, after a storm destroyed the old pathway. We were very glad he had done so, as it is quite a trek to the beach, but a wonderful one. Nellie sat overlooking the incredible cliffs and bluey green sea while we strolled along the cliff tops and wandered slowly down to the rocks and pebbles below. Durdle Door is quite a sight. It shows the effects of the bashing waves and has a sense of time, of what has gone on long ago, and at the same time how things change, develop and move on. We all know it will not be there forever

29 and ponder over this, gazing silently at the wonder of nature. Is Nellie getting a bit too deep and philosophical? She does that you know! The sun was shining that day, but it wasn’t too warm, so just right for a walk. The climb back is a bit of a test and Nellie was glad she had stayed in the car park. Lulworth Cove. Small but perfectly formed (just like Nellie..?). This amazing, almost circular cove is great for adults and children alike. With rocks pools at low tide, it is perfect for exploring. The short walk to the beach passes a house, now ‘an olde sweet shop’, which is tiny but once housed a whole family. Again a sign of how times have changed. As soon as you arrive at the wonderful circular cove itslef you are dazzled by the beautiful white pebble beach with its blue waters and wonderful rock pools teeming with sea creatures. Dogs are permitted on the left-hand side of the slipway. The Heritage Centre near

GUIDE Pest Control
Even the best kept garden will be teeming with critters all conspiring to sabotage your growing efforts and you could spend a lot on named chemicals to combat various problems but it may be worth having a go with more environmentally friendly remedies first. For instance, the cabbage-white butterfly, as its name suggests will home in on your cabbages and other brassicas, lay its eggs and, two weeks later, a mass of caterpillars will be eating holes in the leaves. Pick them off by hand, inspecting the plants carefully every day or two and try spraying them with salty water to deter them. To combat greenfly, try crushing a clove of garlic in warm water, leave for about 6 hours, strain into a hand spray and spray over the plants. It’s very effective. If you find aphids on your rose buds, a disgusting but effective treatment is to rub them out with your fingers. Cats can be deterred with oldfashioned moth balls although the effects don’t
last very long. After a wet night a local cat had buried all of ours! Of all the pests that will drive you up the wall, slugs and snails are at the top of the list, particularly when you have young seedlings or are growing hostas or sunflowers. For plants in pots, Vaseline or grease smeared round the pot can help, as can copper strips which cause electro-chemical shocks. Otherwise, try sharp mulches around the plants that need protection, such as sharp gravel, crushed eggshells or broken seashells. Some say hair clippings work (see your local hairdresser) and caffeine is supposed to be lethal to molluscs so try coffee grounds. Half fill a dish with beer (I don’t think they are particularly fussy about the brand!) and sink it in the ground to attract the slugs which fall in and drown. Of course, nothing really beats a size 10 boot and a thorough search of the garden with a torch in hand on a damp night might pay dividends. Happy hunting!

Why make a Lasting Power of Attorney The possibility of losing mental capacity can be a distressing thought and is often seen as something that does not need to be considered until the future. However, it needs to be arranged whilst still having capacity and is best made sooner rather than later. Capacity could potentially be lost at any time, such as through an accident, a stroke or a degenerative condition such as Alzheimer’s and with growing reports of 18-45year olds suffering from mental health problems it can happen to people of any age. If capacity is lost and there is no LPA in place, any family or friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship to make decisions on the donor’s behalf. This is a lengthier process, costs much more than registering an LPA and will incur ongoing costs which an LPA does not. It can never be certain that the Court of Protection will approve an application and
they are particularly reluctant to approve a Deputyship for a person’s health and welfare. By using an LPA the donor can choose who will make decisions for them and how these decisions may be made. This control is lost if a Deputy must be appointed after capacity is lost. Problems can be created where one member of a couple loses capacity. If the majority of the couple’s assets are held in joint names and one loses capacity, the other will not be able to access the joint accounts or deal with jointly owned property without applying to the Court of Protection. Similarly, if assets are mostly in the name of one partner who loses capacity, it could potentially leave the other unable to access any assets or be unable to maintain the home.
