Talking about Wildlife...
What can nature do for you? Spring has sprung in Dorset. Daffodils and primroses are adding colour to our landscape, butterflies are flitting around, and blossom is starting to bud on trees – a most welcome sight after a long winter. But what does being outside this time of year mean to you, and how does it make you feel? That’s a question we’re asking as part of the new Dorset Wildlife Trust campaign, ‘My Wild Life’, which asks: what’s your wild life? You may think you don’t live a wild life, but every time you step out of your front door, particularly this time of year, wildlife and outside space can shape your day ahead and change your mood, for the better. ‘Ecotherapy’ (being active outdoors) has been proven to improve health and wellbeing, and is a recognised method for helping those with mental and physical health issues. Flora, from Bridport in Dorset is a wild swimmer and loves spending time outside with her children. She also uses nature to help with projects for her stained glass art business. Flora said, “I get a lot of inspiration from being outdoors. As well as contemporary work, I do a lot of traditional work where stained glass panels often feature birds and foliage. Whilst I’m out with my family in Dorset, there’s plenty to photograph to help me with my work.” Beth, from West Bay said, “I absolutely love our coastline and we enjoy going out with the children. We build dens, we play in the sand and fly kites. It’s important to us to spend time outside with them, getting fresh air and exploring local places. Spending time outside makes me feel inspired, relaxed and invigorated.”

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie loves Poole! We have so much to do on our doorstep here in Dorset. There are plenty of exciting activities for all ages, as well as miles of glorious beaches, just around the corner, in our beautiful town of Bournemouth as well of course in our wonderful town of Southbourne, Tuckton & Hengistbury Head! Poole Quay is a vibrant place. There is much history, fantastic old buildings and many good restaurants and cafes for a coffee break, or even a full seafood meal. So yes, Nellie loves to travel to Poole. She knows that many of you will be very familiar with the sights and sounds of our wonderful seaside location but she wanted to tell you of her recent exciting trip out and all that she saw. The Sunseeker boats! Oh boy do they look magnificent. We are lucky enough to have Sunseeker based right here in Poole. It is in fact the flagship dealership for new and preowned Sunseeker boats and luxury motor yachts. These yachts make Nellie’s mouth water. They give the whole place a sense of wealth, extravagance… and how the other

Nellie loves Sunseekers! half live! Oh well, maybe not this lifetime but they are great to see anyway. The Pleasure boats! Now these are more like it. Nellie can afford this. Though she is rather too large to actually step on board. (She really does need to go on a diet… again!). Brownsea Island is where these boats take you, as well as some trips to Wareham, Swanage and Old Harry Rocks, so for anyone wanting to have a pleasurable trip around the harbour, take in our glorious scenery, have a coffee on board and generally ‘while away the day’, this is for you! It is also for children as they usually love the sea and it is pretty exciting to watch the land move further and further away. Brownsea Island, which is magnificently set in Poole Harbour with spectacular views over the Purbecks is owned by the National Trust. Lord Baden Powell’s statue salutes you as you set off for ‘his scout’s island’. Our famous, rare, red squirrels can be spotted here so those with a good camera could get some amazing photos. There is also a café as well as a hotel, but only those lucky enough to work for the John Lewis Partnership can stay here, as it is owned
25 25 by them. The data I have is that there is a long waiting list! Back on the Quay, there are haunted pubs! The King Charles Pub dates all the way back to the 1300s when it was a wool house! Incredible. The Custom House, now a wonderful place to sit and have a coffee or meal, is famous for the smuggling episode some 250 years ago when 30 ‘savage’ smugglers forced there way in and stole 2 ton of tea. Those were the days… There is even an old prison, called Fish Street Gaol. Can you find it? Continuing past the Georgian House, Hotel du Vin, there are some very old Almshouses (a house founded by charity, offering accommodation for poor people) dating back to Henry V. In fact, if local history is your interest then the Poole Museum also houses the Local History Centre. It is based in the historic Town Cellars, where you can learn more about the history of Poole and it’s people. It is a fascinating place to visit, all free of charge and Nellie highly recommends it. For children on the quay there are amusement arcades, an illuminated pirate, crazy golf course which is indoors, above the amusement arcade, so ideal if the weather is not so good… and plenty of ice cream sellers!

One of Poole’s haunted pubs! We love Banana Wharf for lunch. The views are perfect, whether the weather is good or bad, so do mention Nellie to the manager there and give him a big “Hello” from Dorset Publications! One last thing, the shops. Nellie loves “Pavers”, the shoe shop, and has more shoes than she needs, or even her cupboards can store, but hey that’s girls for you. We are well known for it! There is also the nationally and even internationally famous Poole Pottery. The large, open plan shop is great to look around, buy Birthday presents, gifts with “Poole” on them for those out of town, or just a special something for yourself. There is also a place for children to paint a pot themselves. Ideal for Grandma or Grandad. So, do take a day out to our wonderful town of Poole. It has a lot to offer for all ‘shapes and sizes’, all weathers and any time of the year. Nellie hopes you find something new and exciting. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

Charity Bowls Evening Monday 11th May Organised by Rotary Club of Parley Fancy rolling up to the Knyveton Gardens Bowling Club (KGBC) after work on Monday 11th May? If you do, you’re assured of a great evening out with a little mild exercise (some bowling), a bite to eat (buffet meal included) and perhaps a drink or two (completely optional); the KGBC licensed bar will be open to nonmembers. Never played bowls before? Not a problem. You’ll be made very welcome and even given some basic instruction in ‘how-to-bowl’. All this is part of a charity fund-raising event organised jointly between KGBC and the Rotary Club of Parley. It’s to help Lewis Brimble participate in the World Transplant Games later this year. So who exactly is Lewis Brimble...? Lewis, now 14, was diagnosed with MPGN Type 2 and kidney failure four years ago. He has undergone treatment for his condition ever since, including a kidney transfer from his Mum. As well as playing bowls to a high standard, Lewis is a Multi Medal winner at the UK Transplant Games and has been selected to represent Team GB at the World Transplant Games in Argentina this August. But he has to raise a total of £6,000 towards making this trip. To help Lewis get there, KGBC has adopted Lewis as their President’s Charity for 2015. The Rotary Club of Parley has already made a pledge to support Lewis and has now joined forces with KGBC to run this event to add to their donation. You can be part of this good work for the astonishingly low contribution of £12.50.
This includes your bowling (6pm till dusk) and your buffet meal afterwards. Any beverages you consume are extra, as you would probably guess. Who knows? You might enjoy your evening of bowling so much that you would like to give it another go later this summer. A whole new, and healthy, leisure experience awaits you... You’ll find Knyveton Gardens Bowling Club at Frances Road, Bournemouth, BH1 3RY. The evening’s play starts at 6pm. The closer you can arrive to that time, the more bowling you will get in. Air Cadet Junior Leaders Course XVI Raises an Incredible £24,500! The Air Cadet Junior Leaders on this year’s course XVI have raised an incredible £24,500 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. A huge amount which will make a massive difference to the opportunities that the charity can provide for young people in the coming year. The Air Cadets Junior Leaders Course is physically and mentally demanding and requires real commitment and determination. Almost 180 Air Cadets applied for Course XVI and with 59 students recently completing the nine month course, it gives an indication of the high standard that must be achieved. A big step up from the other Cadet Leadership Courses, the Junior Leaders Course is aimed at cadets 17 years or older in the year they begin the course. It’s also open to Sea Cadets and Army Cadets and culminates in the award of a Level Two Certificate in Team Leadership from the Institute of Leadership and Management. This is the toughest but most rewarding of the Air Cadets leadership courses – any Cadet that makes it through has the makings of a very successful leader. As part of the assessment the Junior Leaders are tasked with planning, organising and implementing a fundraising activity or event and the JTYAF is privileged to be the recipient charity for these activities. The Junior Leaders on Course XVI
organised a whole range of fundraising events and challenges. From Skydives to Drumathons, Coast to Coast Cycles, Half Marathons and even a Unicycle over Forth Bridge the Junior Leaders inspired their friends and family to support them in their innovative fundraising challenges. Many JL’s took on extremely tough physical challenges, with hundreds of miles cycled, the Welsh 3000’s summitted, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks and the Dorset Coast Path completed to name but a few. The JTYAF is totally overwhelmed by the support of these remarkable young people. Their commitment to John’s Foundation and the support and encouragement that they provide is nothing short of inspiring. We are also extremely grateful to the Junior Leader’s friends and families for their kindness and generosity. £24,500 is an incredible achievement and will make a massive difference to the opportunities that the JTYAF is able to provide for young people. It will not only fund the Junior Leaders volunteering expedition to Ghana later this year but will also finance all the JTYAF awards to young people from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole, the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Cadets, the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Prince’s Trust Scheme and the Guides.

Disabled Stay-at-Home Local Mum Celebrates Finding Her 40th Property Development Site Bournemouth-based entrepreneur and stay-at-home mum, Vanessa Addison, celebrates finding her 40th development site in the area as part of her dynamic property development company, Green Bee Homes Limited. The business was formed 3 years ago as a result of a school run where Vanessa, who is profoundly deaf, spotted an ideal plot of land for development, and is now set to turnover £3 million this year. Green Bee Homes’ 40th development site is based in Granby Road, Muscliff and will consist of 2 new-build bungalows as well as an existing bungalow. In addition to this site, Vanessa is working on 10 new-build houses, 4 flats and has 14 plots of land in various stages of planning this year alone. Director, Vanessa Addison, added “before spotting our first plot of land on the school run 3 years ago, I had no prior knowledge of property development. I learnt everything from scratch, including how to find ideal plots of land, to planning, right through to developing our own building style with an integral ‘porthole’ design feature. As I am profoundly deaf, I also wanted to make sure that all our homes comply fully with being disabled friendly. Many of our properties are sold before they are even put on the market, and the government-backed ‘help to buy’ equity scheme for new-builds has helped a lot of our clients to buy one of our homes with just a 5% deposit saved.” Vanessa went on to say “I was looking for a flexible career that I could fit around

David Hockney believes it is ‘Back to the Drawing Board’ Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) recently held an exclusive viewing of the Jerwood Drawing Prize and a showcase of student drawings to raise awareness of the University’s new Drawing Studio Appeal. The anticipated Drawing Studio has been endorsed by David Hockney who was announced on the night as the prestigious patron of the new building. In dialogue surrounding his patronage David described his eagerness to support the new Drawing Studio and stated why the facility is so important to young artists, saying: “You know I believe it is always back to the drawing board. If you want to make a new kind of picture, like the caveman it still has to be drawn.” Professor Stuart Bartholomew CBE, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the Arts University Bournemouth said: “We are extremely privileged to have the esteemed David Hockney as our patron of the new Drawing Studio; his relevance to the building is undeniable as he intrinsically understands the importance it will have for our students. Our intention is to provide students with a new space in which drawing can be taught and practised. We are also keen to reassert the centrality of drawing to the courses we offer.” The design for the studio has been completed by the architect Professor Sir Peter Cook who is an alumnus of the institution having studied architecture there in the 1950s. Peter was the founder of the Archigram movement and whilst he is recognised for buildings
internationally, (most notably the Kuntshaus Graz), there are no buildings by him in the UK. This is therefore an iconic project for him. The condition of the room will celebrate four aspects of light – central themes in looking and drawing to include a large north-light in the studio tradition, a rear clerestory that throws a softer light back from the rear wall, a discrete and even softer light that filters from beneath the bench on the east side and, finally, a graded wash of light that comes along the curve of the entrance porte clochere via the glass entrance door. It is hoped the Appeal will raise up to £1million towards the cost of the Drawing Studio. Have you recently moved into the area? We are a club of retired & semi-retired gentlemen who meet on the second Thursday of each month with a speaker followed by lunch.We also have various outings. The talk for June is by Chris Walker and titled ‘Musicians in the Muppet Show’. Our meetings are held at The Liston Hotel, 5 Wollstonecraft Road, Boscombe. Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, volunteer car drivers take the elderly out for a little car ride before going to the homes of volunteer host and hostesses for Sunday afternoon tea. We only ask our volunteers just to provide tea once or twice a year in their homes. Reserve car drivers are required when the regulars can’t come, perhaps two or three times a year.
