We are coming to my favourite time of year, the summer. I love nothing better than to sit in the garden with a cup of coffee listening to our beautiful English bird songs. It is also great to be able to go out and see new places, visit friends and enjoy some space, whether it is by our amazing coastline with some of the best beaches in England, the New Forest in all its splendor and magnificent wildlife or in the countryside, we have it all here on our doorstep.

Daichi, The Dashing Dude, our new Dorset Directories Campervan took us to the rolling hills of the Purbecks this month, to see Dinosaur Footprints! What a great day out that was. Bournemouth U3A News Are you retired or semi-retired? Don’t be lonely. Meet people, learn new skills and have fun. Learn, Laugh & Live with Bournemouth U3A. We currently have over 1100 members in the Bournemouth U3A, all meeting with people with similar interests, there is no reason why the elderly in Bournemouth should be lonely. Join the U3A and make friends with others who share your interests. We run over 120 Interest Groups for retired and semi-retired in Bournemouth, Fifteen of them are in Southbourne. Another forty groups meet in the Friends Meeting House in Boscombe in easy reach of Southbourne residents. Some groups are run in members’ homes which are often hosted by members who find it difficult to travel to other venues. We also cover the Westbourne and Moordown areas. We do not encroach on Christchurch which is covered by Christchurch U3A. Talking about Wildlife...
The Underwater World Whether you’re one minute away from the beach or one hour, for many of us, living so close to the sea is one of the best things about living in Dorset. Already this year, our marine conservation team have been finding exciting and unusual things washed up on our beaches at low tide. The ‘furrowed crab’ was a great find with it being the first recording of this species for Kimmeridge. This crab is also a ‘climate change indicator species’ as we’re seeing them spread further north, in line with our seas warming up. Other seashore species which have been spreading eastwards into Dorset include the ‘toothed topshells’. These sea snails are common further west but have grown from none at all in the early 2000s to being a common find at Kimmeridge. The small cushion starfish has also become common at Kimmeridge since the first sighting in 2014, and the exotic-looking anemone shrimp that lives within the stinging tentacles of the snakelocks anemone, has also increased in number in recent years. This year, World Oceans Day is celebrating our oceans, encouraging everyone to get out and explore their nearest coastline. You could take part in a 2-minute beach clean, try some rockpooling, or even see what rainbow colour wonders lie in the gardens beneath the seas with DWT’s snorkel trail at Kimmeridge. Seahorses: There have been an unusual amount of seahorses washed up on beaches this year. This could be a good indicator that we have a healthy population in Dorset. Let us know if you find one! 2. Cushion starfish: In rockpools, the cushion star glides along on its myriad tiny tube-feet, as if sliding on ice. This small relative of star fish feeds by everting part of its stomach through its mouth to digest dead and decaying animals and seaweed. 3. Flat periwinkle: Look for the flat periwinkle in seaweedy pools. They range in colour from sunshine yellow, through burnt orange to chocolate brown and are easy to spot amongst the sea wrack fronds they graze on. The yellow shells are particularly easy to spot, looking like discarded sweetcorn kernels! By Sally Welbourn

What’s On 2019… Wimborne Folk Festival
The famous Wimborne Folk Festival returns to the town. We’re taking part with Morris dancers, music sessions, crafts, games, face painting and lots more! The folk festival was established in 1982 and received over 70,000 visitors in 2018. Poole Harbour Boat Show The fifth annual Poole Harbour Boat Show, in association with Sunseeker, will return to our shores this June, from its award-winning home, the Poole Quay Boat Haven. With over 32,000 people in attendance in 2018 the Show, organised by Poole Harbour Commissioners, continues to be the biggest-ever, FREE to attend Boat Show on the south coast. The Boat Show’s ambitions and theme are to get people ‘on the water’, particularly young people. In addition to more than an anticipated 200 exhibitors, over 100 boats will be on the water, including tall ships, celebrity style yachts and motors cruises. There will also be an impressive line-up of ‘on the water’ activities and workshops which includes: Taster sessions: For those who want to see which water sport suits them best, there will be FREE taster sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Paddle boarding, kayaking and dinghy sailing

Bridport Food Festival A celebration of local food and drink in and around Bridport. During the week Food and drink producers are opening their doors to the public to showcase what they do, restaurants, cafes and pubs are putting on special menus alongside lots of other activities including master classes, food related quiz, food and wine tastings, etc The finale is at Asker Meadows on Saturday 15 June where over 60 local food & drink producers and food to go caterers join up with the Bridport Round Table’s Beer Festival. The Dorset Directories Camper Van Daichi, otherwise known as “The Dashing Dude”, our new Dorset Directories Campervan, sees himself as a young, playful yet rather debonair kind of guy, so when he decided to take us to see the Dinosaur Footprints in the Purbecks, we were rather surprised. How can anything be that old!? (I did not look in the mirror this morning…) How on earth can these footprints be engraved for so long in the hard Purbeck stone? What a feat of nature. Our Jurassic Coastline is packed with amazing history for us to explore and marvel at, and Daichi could not wait to get us there. Dashing along the country roads, bouncing over the hills with magnificent views over the rolling countryside, Daichi was in his element. He is so glad he travelled over thousands of miles of terrain to finally arrive on our beautiful English soil. The footprints can be found at Keats
Daichi braves the wind at Swanage
Daichi serves up lunch... with a view! Quarry along the Priest’s Way on the Purbeck Coastline. Can you believe that these dinosaurs roamed our land some 140 million years ago! (Maybe I do not feel so bad about my age after all.) Yes, that long ago and we can still see their footprints today, fossilized in the rock. It is thought that this was a shallow lagoon where these brachiosaurs (translated as “arm lizard”) would gather to drink together. They were long necked plant eating dinosaurs, around 50 tonnes each, or five times the weight of a modern elephant, and measured more than 25 metres from nose to tail. Wow, that’s BIG! The environment was very different then too and shows the ever-changing climate that we live in. It is believed that this area was a sub-tropical wilderness of coastal forests and swamps. Over time, the footprints left in the soft mud were covered over by layers of rock and preserved as the fossils we

29 see today. Hayden had great fun trying to step from footprint to footprint, to literally follow in the dinosaurs’ footsteps. He finished up leaping (boys…) across at full stride, but even that was not enough. These dinosaurs were massive. Quarrymen Kevin Keates and Trevor Haysom discovered this amazing find in 1997 when the site was still being worked and Daichi is certainly glad they did. What a find! The famous Dancing Ledge is nearby and Daichi was all ears when he found out that this pool was blasted out of the rocks by a former headmaster of Dunford School, so that the pupils could swim in the summer. The school sadly no longer exits but its salty water pool enjoyed by thousands over the years is a playful legacy it has left behind. It so happens that Hayden, our son had been doing his Duke of Edinburgh Award with his school, and by chance he had done his expedition in the Purbecks with his friends. They had walked for two full days, carrying all their equipment, from the car park at the Sandbanks
One small step for a dinosaur... Chain Ferry to Corfe Castle where they camped for the night, then onto Swanage the next day. They looked pretty exhausted, but all were smiling when they arrived triumphant at their destination. I am sure the dinosaurs would have done this route in no time, with those powerfully long, yet graceful legs. It is fascinating to think that these boys and girls in 2019 took a very similar route to those amazing, extinct creatures of yesteryear, some 140 million years ago. Now there is a thought… Daichi was very proud he took us to somewhere we had never been before. That is his purpose, with his chirpy step and tooting horn. Where will he take us next, I wonder? Dorset Blind Association:
A century of serving the community Did you know that there are currently over 5,000 people registered as blind or partially sighted and an estimated 30,000 people living with serious sight loss in Dorset? That is the equivalent to almost 1 in every 25 people living in the county. A local charity has been working for over 100 years now to help Dorset people who have to face the challenges which arise from the disability of sight loss. Formed in 1918, the Dorset Blind Association works to help people adjust to living with serious sight loss, to still feel their life has purpose and to enable them to lead full, healthy and socially active lives in their local community, lived as independently as they chose. Support is practical, community focused and tailored to each individual person’s needs. Crucially for many, it is not time limited in any way, because for most people sight loss is sadly not curable and also people’s needs change over time. Dorset Blind Association goes about its business quietly and without fuss and regularly helps around 1,000 people each month, doing this with just a small staff team, supported by over 300 volunteers, who collectively give more than 30,000 hours of time each year. The charity’s work, and that amazing contribution from its volunteers, was recognised in 2017 by it being selected to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Demand for the charity’s services is increasing, while local authority and health support for most visually
impaired people continues to be cut, and as Dorset Blind Association receives no government or health funding for its work, it relies on support from the local community to fund its services. A new charity shop, recently opened at 99 Southbourne Grove, is just one way the charity is trying to raise funds, so if you have unwanted goods to donate to a charity shop, or you have a few hours to spare each week and would like to volunteer to help there, please think of this very local cause as one worthy of your support. Every penny raised at the shop and through other fundraising activities is only ever spent helping blind and partially sighted people living in your Dorset community. They could be your friends or neighbours. Please go into the shop and say “Hello” to the manager Julia and her assistant Jonathan, they will be pleased to see you. Jimmy’s Iced Coffee Founder Awards Pupils’ Achievements in Prize Giving Ceremony ICED coffee entrepreneur Jim Cregan presented awards of recognition to high-achievers at Bournemouth Collegiate School’s Prize Giving ceremony. The annual ceremony, which took place on Friday, May 3rd, recognised the outstanding achievements of the pupils with an afternoon of performances and celebrations attended by parents. The co-founder of Christchurch-based Jimmy’s Iced Coffee spoke about how he turned his love of iced coffee into a profitable international business before presenting pupils with their awards. He said: “It was a complete honour to present the Prize Giving and to see all the awesome things the students are doing. “They all deserve to feel super proud of what they’ve achieved. They’re clearly creative, committed and have bags of energy to go out and change the world. That’s cool and I can’t wait to see them make it happen – whatever their dreams are.” Since launching Jimmy’s Iced Coffee eight years ago, the product is now stocked in almost 5,000 stores nationwide including the likes of Waitrose, Sainsburys and Tesco with one carton sold every four seconds. Jim, who started at the Arts University Bournemouth, added: “Academia wasn’t my thing, but I learnt a hell of a lot through Uni and as a Student
Brand Ambassador for Redbull. These legends have the world at their feet now – whether they decide to go to University or not; I hope they take advantage, work really hard and are inspired to start their own thing, if that’s what makes their heart sing.” The pupils were awarded for excellent achievements across the board including academic performance, music, art, computer science and sporting successes. Headmaster Russell Slatford said: “The Prize Giving is a ceremony we always look forward to. It is a chance to celebrate the pupils’ outstanding achievements and to look back over the academic year and see how much we have achieved as a school. “It was great to have Jim Cregan attend this year. He is the embodiment of entrepreneurial spirit and an inspirational success story from the local community.” Jim Cregan

Tastes so good... Spanish Baked Eggs
A taste from the Costas – ideal served as lunch with a fresh green salad, and eaten al fresco (if the British Summer weather allows!) A perfect holiday reminder that’s quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 x large free range eggs 100g sliced chorizo 1 onion finely sliced 1 red/yellow pepper sliced 2 crushed garlic cloves ½ tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp. olive oil Chopped parsley
1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.
Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread
5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.
