Dear Southbourne, Welcome to your January 2014 edition of The Southbourne Link! What a month of wild weather we are having. Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan, did take us into The New Forest, but I have to say that we did not attempt to stay overnight…You can read all about our December trip on pages 22 and 23 and don’t forget that if you see us in Nellie, do give us a wave! Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions? If there is anything that the advertisers inside can help you with, then they would certainly love to hear from you. Please continue to mention The Southbourne Link when making any calls or enquiries. This makes all the difference and makes our work very worth while. With that in mind we have a full magazine for you this month with lots of local shops and businesses. The index at the back gives you all there is to find inside. From bargain fish and chips, to fencing, pet services, painter and decorators, property maintenance, removals, garden services and much more. There are also some articles, a recipe, a prize word search and a panto review, so do get that all important cuppa and have a read. There were 54 people at the Aladdin Pantomime at the Bournemouth Pavilion on 10th December, all thanks to Dorset Publications… “Oh Yes there was!” What a great night out we had. Tastes so good... PORK & LENTIL BAKE WITH APPLE
This meal goes a long way for a small budget, warming and delicious - perfect for a winter supper. Good butchers and some supermarkets will sell pigs cheeks - they’re a great economical cut and become deliciously tender with a long, slow cook. Diced pork is a great substitute.
Ingredients:
Equipment: Large casserole dish
180g unsalted butter 6 sticks celery, washed and chopped 2 medium sized onions diced 450g or 8 individual pigs cheeks 450g cooking apples, peeled, cored and quartered 3 carrots peeled and batoned 2 parsnips peeled and sliced thickly 500ml apple juice 500ml good stock 200g puy lentils, rinsed and picked over for any stones 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
Method: Fry the celery and the onion together in the sunflower oil until softened in a large casserole dish. If using pigs cheeks remove any tough membranes or fatty tissue and cut each cheek into 4. Add the pork to the celery and onion and cook until the meat is browned on all surfaces. Add the apples, carrots, apple juice and stock. Finally add the lentils and stir together making sure the meat and the lentils are submerged in the stock. Cook in a slow oven (150ºC/ Gas Mark 2 1/2) for 2 hours. You can cook it for longer and the meat will become even more deliciously tender. If using diced pork keep an eye on it, but 1 hour to 1 and a half hours should be perfect. Taste for seasoning before serving. Adjust as required. Serve in dishes with crusty bread and spring greens or purple sprouting broccoli.

Partnership success for Health Promoting Hospitals initiative This year the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was involved in the launch of a new initiative to improve the quality of care for patients with long-term conditions. ‘Health Promoting Hospitals’ is a partnership between the Trust and other key providers of health and social care, including Dorset Healthcare, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Dorset Police, BH Live and Carers UK, and reflects how health care in communities is changing. Hospitals no longer just treat and discharge patients, but are involved in providing education and advice so patients can understand and manage any long-term medical conditions throughout their lives. A high number of hospital readmissions and health complications can be prevented if patients are empowered to self-manage their long-term conditions and if providers of health and social care are fully involved in the process. The Trust is now part of the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals established by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Health promotion aims to improve the health of individuals and communities through education, behavioural change and environmental improvement. Under the Health Promoting Hospitals scheme, the Trust provides a range of health advice which has not only had an impact on patients, but their families, staff, partner health providers and the wider community. Activities included in the Health Promoting Hospitals initiative are: Community education programmes • Understanding Health events - these popular events are completely free to the public and give valuable insights into topics that may otherwise be difficult to understand. • Health awareness seminars hosted in conjunction with other health care providers such as Carers UK, Stop Smoke and the British Heart Foundation. • Health information available via the Trust website www.rbch.nhs.uk. Patient health promotion programmes • Partnership with LV= Streetwise - the Trust has introduced a hospital ward scenario to the interactive safety centre, Streetwise, aimed at schoolchildren. • Introduction of a new senior citizens tour at Streetwise - attendees take part in a two hour interactive session aimed at preventing slips, trips and falls. • Move to Improve programme - patients from the Trust’s rheumatology and fibromyalgia clinics are directly referred into rehabilitation clinics for six week taster sessions offering techniques such as Tai Chi and relaxation classes.

The hospital ward scenario which forms part of the Streetwise interactive safety centre • Back Fitness Programme and Back Club - supporting patients with persistent back pain. • Trust-led rehabilitation programmes offered at BH Live leisure facilities. The construction of musculoskeletal rehab centres based at the Littledown Centre and Pelham’s Park Leisure Centre are due for completion in spring 2014. • Pelham’s Park Leisure Centre hosts pulmonary rehabilitation classes two times a week to provide support to people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and chronic lung disease. It is not only patients and the public benefiting from the Health Promoting Hospitals initiative. Staff now have access to a variety of programmes including fitness classes, walking groups, healthy eating seminars and immunisation schemes. Trust Chairman Jane Stichbury said: “Working with other providers of health and social care as part of this initiative is extremely positive. Talking about Wildlife... New Year Resolutions for Wildlife It is traditional to begin the New Year with a set of resolutions to improve ourselves in one way or another. This year, if you feel like doing something a bit different, there are plenty of ways you can help improve wildlife, and wildlife can help improve you. If you’re looking to get rid of the Christmas calories and get some fresh air, we have plenty of volunteering tasks on our reserves all around Dorset where you can get knee-deep in mud and up-close with nature! And below, we have listed some ways you can experience wildlife and help nature conservation in Dorset, which will bring you pleasure, comfort and satisfaction in 2014. 1. Treat yourself to a quiet walk at the weekend. The woods transform in the winter: pathways are covered in a thin layer of frost, which sparkles as the sun rises and sets; the trees stand firm like soldiers, bracing themselves against the biting winds; and their bare branches intertwine, forming wild, lopsided archways. This is truly a sight to behold. 2. If you have a family, spend three days a month in the local forest. Take a ‘Wildlife’ book, keep a record of what you find, and discover how the world changes. 3. Transform your garden into a haven for wildlife by setting up bird feeders, nest boxes, and log-piles. The shelters you create will protect animals from the cold. 4. Clean out any existing bird boxes so that they are ready for the spring.

Top up bird feeders daily. Don’t clear your garden too much this winter. Wild shrubs can be used by animals to shelter. Additionally, their seeds provide beneficial food for both animals and birds. 7. Sit back and enjoy the sculptural effect that wild seeds create. 8. Support local businesses and reduce your carbon footprint by regularly visiting farmers’ markets. These markets are abundant in fresh food, including meat, dairy produce, and locally grown fruit and vegetables. 9. Precycle rather than recycle; if you don’t need it, don’t buy it. 10. Ensure that litter is disposed of properly. Thousands of creatures die every year because of litter. Panto Reivew
He’s behind you!!! Oh yes he is!! Yes, it was panto time again and Bournemouth Pavilion did itself proud once more. Twenty two of us joined the thirty two prize winners from Dorset and Purbeck Publications on the press night (making ourselves heard when announced towards the end!). Aladdin, this year’s story, was superbly directed by Chris Jarvis, who also played Wishee Washee. The production had everything we love about panto... Jokes for the parents, fun for the kids and a great use of current chart hits adapted to fit the story. Scott Maslen was the suitably evil, but quite sexy, Abanazar, trying his best to thwart Aladdin. Richard Vincent gave a stellar performance as Aladdin with outstanding vocals and high energy. Jamie-Lee Mason was the beautiful Princess Jasmine and she too gave stunning vocal performances.

There were great special effects with Aladdin fl ying all over the world on his magic carpet and the evil Imax instructing Abanazar how to get the power of the universe. Bobby Crush gave a hilarious performance as Widow Twankey and even entertained us with his fantastic piano playing. Those of a certain age may remember him winning Opportunity Knocks with this particular talent. The whole cast gave outstanding performances to make the evening magical. Pantomime really is the best way to get into the Christmas spirit. There was fun and laughter for all the family and I am looking forward to next year’s panto already! Julie Sharp

Adventures of Nellie
The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Wow what weather we have had recently! Nellie was all set to take us to The New Forest Wildlife Park, to see the deer and other animals, but the park was shut due to storm damage. We hope the owners have managed to sort everything out and we promise to visit in the near future. Not to be put off we decided that Nellie was still to have a run around the New Forest, after her stay in the garden over Christmas. On the planned day, upon waking, the sun was shining and it all looked perfect to see the wonderful sights of the open land and deep forestry so near to us. Unfortunately, as none of us in the family are particularly keen morning people, and taking such a long time to have breakfast and get ready, by 11.38am when we finally left the house, the sun had totally disappeared… in fact just as we set off the rain started to pour – again! Mum and Dad had come to stay with us for Christmas, so we all went, with Mum and Dad following in ‘The Matrix’, much like our holiday on the Isle of Wight in the summer. Nellie was not perturbed by the rain and suitably stopped at the viewpoint just as you enter the New Forest from the A31 at Picket Post. It really is a fantastic view

Nellie admires the views and if you ever need some space to relax, chill out or reflect, then this is a good place to go. It would be a great place to make those all important New Year’s Resolutions! Last summer we were at this very same point and a New Forest pony came along and started eating the picnic of a very frustrated family, as you can see in the photo! Since the weather was very different at this time, we continued on our journey, to Burley. Burley really is somewhere special. In the summer there is a horse and cart to take you through the countryside, but today there was not so much activity, though all the quaint shops were open. We just had to take a look in each of them of course. Hayden bought the most cute pair of Sloopers at The Old Shed (not slippers, no I didn’t make a spelling mistake, just in case you wondered…). They are very much like a pair of jesters’ shoes and anyone who has been to the house and seen them on Hayden’s growing feet, has remarked how much they like them. They were a bargain at just over half price. Hayden bought them himself with some of his Christmas money. Money well spent – and not on an electronic game! Oh yes I bought an

Hayden with his Sloopers from The Old Shed Elvis Christmas CD to play in Nellie on the way back. Sad but true I am afraid – it was the 28th December so I thought I could just about get away with it. After all the shopping excitement we went for lunch at The Burley Stores. Dad, who is a truly northern man and loves his sea food, opted for the breaded whitebait. He was not disappointed, the plate was full and thoroughly enjoyed! We all watched through the window as another downpour of rain soaked the village. (I couldn’t resist taking a photo of a place mat in one of the shop windows…) I was determined that we would stop for a cup of tea in Nellie, so off we went, back to the viewpoint, and on went the whistling kettle. With the roof up, Hayden ‘upstairs’ and the front seat turned inwards, which is really useful, there was just enough seats

for all of us to enjoy a cuppa and admire, albeit in a way that we were glad to be under cover, the glorious, if rather damp looking views in front of us - with Elvis softly singing away in the background. We would never have done this without Nellie, as a car is just not the same. The van brings us all together no matter the weather and in true British style we enjoyed ourselves despite the rain! We didn’t of course stay overnight in Nellie on this trip. I say ‘of course’ as we may well have been blown dramatically down the hill with all the high winds we have had recently. There are in fact many caravan parks and campsites in the New Forest area. Stephen’s parents will

Stephen’s sister will also be staying in her new bright yellow VW Campervan named Jessie Phyllis after her two late Grandmothers. That will be a story to tell! Cool Coast Ice Rink Open! Ice skating is back at the Bournemouth International Centre this winter! Cool Coast Ice Rink is the South Coast’s biggest indoor seasonal ice rink and is open until Sunday 23 February 2014! A fun and healthy all-weather activity, it’s perfect for kids and adults alike! Plus, with our helpful Ice Skating penguins, even the youngest novices can have a go in our Cool Kids area - separate from the main rink it’s ideal for smaller children and their parents. CONTACT THE ELDERLY We are looking for volunteer drivers in Bournemouth and Southbourne areas to take elderly people out one Sunday afternoon a month for a little ride and afternoon tea at volunteer host and hostesses homes. The need is for more reserve drivers when the regular ones cannot come for two or three times a year and more volunteer host and hostesses to entertain up to six elderly people and two drivers once or twice a year. Perfect for a splash of colour whilst the rest of the garden hibernates, the Primrose is one of the surest signs that spring is around the corner.
The name derives from the Latin prima rosa which means ‘first rose’ and this beautiful little flower bursts forth with low level blooms that brighten many a gardens corner. They prefer a damp environment which is why you’ll often see them in woods, verges and hedgebanks. Though if you fail to fully repay, it's 19.9% rep APR. After the 5% ends, the rate's up to 1.25%, depending on how much you spend. It requires a decent credit score and household earnings of £20,000+.
You'll get the cashback in time for next Christmas With the Amex card your cashback is paid on the anniversary of the account opening. In effect, it's actually subtracted from your spending. For example, if you owed £400 and had £200 cashback, you'd be charged £200. So open one now and it’s a boost for next Christmas. Top card if you’ve a less than perfect credit score To get most cashback cards you need a good credit score. Frustratingly, the only way to find out for sure is to apply, but that involves putting a mark on your credit file (whether you’re accepted or not). To find your likely odds of acceptance for many different cards, I’ve built an Eligibility Checker tool at www.mse.me/CashbackEligibility, which tells you your chances without any impact on your credit score. For those with a lower credit score, the card most likely to accept you is the www.capitalone.co.uk Classic Extra. It pays 0.5% cashback, plus a £10 yearly bonus if you manage it well, paid each January. As it's primarily marketed as a card to rebuild credit for those with weak histories, even some with past CCJs or defaults can get it. Though you must repay IN FULL each month, or it's a hideous 34.9% APR. Cashback card golden rules: These three facts are so important they’re worth reiterating: a) Always use a monthly direct debit to repay IN FULL, so it's interest-free. b) Don't use it as an excuse to overspend. c) Ensure you've got the cash to repay monthly. Spending on a credit card is huge extra protection By law, buy anything costing £100 to £30,000 and pay, even partly, on any credit card (not debit or charge) and Section 75 laws mean the lender's jointly liable. So if an item's faulty, or the retailer goes bust pre-delivery, you can get money back from the card firm.
