Happy Valentines Day to all our wonderful readers! This is the time of year we sit and think about the sunshine, warmer times and the ability to get out more again. Stephen, myself and Hayden, (with Nellie the campervan of course) have started to do more walking, even on cold days, so long as it is dry. It is a great way to lift the spirits, get away from the TV and blow the cobwebs away. We had a wonderful walk to Moors Valley last week and even met friends on the way. What a success. So, if you are able to get out I do think it helps. Nellie also took us on a “Murder Mystery Walk” around Wimborne… in the dark! What fun that was. First World War Memorial at All Saints Church, Southbourne Albert Thomas Mason
In 1911 Albert Thomas Mason was 41, married to Fanny and father to Archibald Mason three and Evelyn Gladys Mason, one. The family lived at ‘Kensington’, 2 Spa Road, Boscombe with Fanny’s mother Eliza and sister Elizabeth. Albert was working as a plumber’s merchant. The family soon moved to 6 Southern Road, West Southbourne and in 1914 must have been relieved that, at 45, Albert was too old for conscription. By April 1917 the war effort had consumed more and more manpower so the top age of conscription was raised to 51 and Albert, now 47, was obliged to enlist. An older recruit Albert was assessed as below A1 health and so was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Labour Corps. With the war raging in France the British Government needed men with practical skills to keep a huge army on the move. The role of a Labour corps was one of essential support. It provided the infrastructure needed for a large army to camp, fortify, mobilize and communicate. Britain enlisted large numbers of manual workers from countries as far afield as China, India and the West Indies. In 1917, 21,000 Indians travelled to France with the formation of the Indian Labour Corps. The 66th Manipur Indian Labour Corps was part of this huge recruitment of Indian labour in 1917. The President of Manipur State Durbar J.C.Higgins sent official requisitions to all surrounding hill villages with the aim of acquiring able bodied men to serve in labour corps. Understandably villages and families were horrified at the thought of their men folk travelling to serve in a foreign war with the inherent dangers and no guarantee of return. However the government used missionaries such as William Pettigrew to get tribal consent to release men for the cause with the promise of a noncombatant role, the opportunity to travel to foreign countries and payment of 22 rupees per month with two months in advance to soften the blow to the families left behind. The men canvassed did not understand the meaning of a ‘labour corps’ or have any idea what they faced but 2000 were eventually persuaded to enlist and the 22nd Manipur (Naga)
Indian Labour Corps transport unit
Labour Corps, consisting of four units of 500 men each, was born. After basic drill and safety training the last unit to leave Imphal, Manipur was the 66th company who embarked for France on May 19, 1917. It was to this company that 2nd Lieutenant Albert Thomas Mason found himself attached when they arrived in France in 1917. The corps worked long hours, often under enemy fire, throughout 1917. They collected damaged artillery, guns, broken or dysfunctional munitions, rocket shells, bombshells and abandoned boots which were transferred to cargo vehicles. The men lived in bunkers with other labourers from as far afield as Africa and China. They were well fed but cold, vulnerable to shell fire and disease, they longed for home. Even as the war in France eased the conditions had taken a great toll on Albert’s health and he died one year after his deployment on March 1st, 1918, aged 48. Two months later his loyal labourers were repatriated home to Manipur. Researched and written by Alice Miller

CRUMBS Helps Deliver More Popular Community Lunches Due to the continued success of The Crumbs Project outreach program, the charity is launching a number of regular Community Lunches at new venues across Bournemouth.
The Bournemouth based charity which provides vulnerable people the opportunity to train for independence and employment has been overwhelmed by the response to its community lunch program. Crumbs’ mixed ability team have been delivering lunches at Winton Methodist Church and at its own training facility in Hibberd Court on a monthly bases, which are both well attended by local residents. Due to the support from the local community the charity will be launching a series of new regular community lunch dates at venues across Bournemouth. Crumbs’ Community Lunch program aims to bring a variety of people within the community together. Diners can enjoy a friendly, welcoming atmosphere as well as a two course freshly prepared hot lunch, served by Crumbs’ Trainees. The team prepare a varied menu of traditional favourites from scratch, using seasonal produce. The lunches also provide Crumbs’ Trainees valuable customer service experience, as well as the opportunity to showcase their catering skills.

Talking about Wildlife...
Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Royal Bournemouth Hospital continues to receive support from Talbot Village Trust Talbot Village Trust has granted £20,000 to the Bournemouth Hospital Charity to part fund the refurbishment of Ward 11 which forms part of the hospital’s Haematology and Oncology Unit. Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s Ward 11 has undergone the refurbishment to create a real ‘home away from home’ with areas for patients to socialise as well as provide an improved environment for patients who are receiving treatment for lifelong and terminal conditions. The ward is part of the hospital’s Jigsaw Building for which Talbot Village Trust donated a previous £20,000 to help fund its construction in 2013. The building has been open since 2015 and consists of a Women’s Health Unit and state-of-the-art facilities for the treatment of cancer and blood disorders. There is also a dedicated space for a Chemotherapy Day Unit and supportive treatments for patients with haematological and oncological conditions. Marie Miller, cancer care matron at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to Talbot Village Trust
for giving us the funding to help transform our five bathrooms into wet rooms and a toilet. We arrived at Walford Mill Craft Centre all wrapped up with scarves, gloves and torches, ready for our “Murder Mystery” walk. Who did it? What with? These were the allimportant questions and we had just 2 hours to follow the clues and discover the culprit. Would we solve the Mystery in the Vestry? Ivana Cramp had been a keen member of the Minster Choir for years. She had recently come into a large inheritance when her body was found. Was this a deed of greed… or because Ivana had an overpowering,

flat voice? We were about to find out. This is all fiction of course but we really got into the ‘spirit’ of things. Nellie had inadvertently come across “Treasure Trails” while surfing the internet one evening. She is getting very clever as you can see! These trails are described as ‘the fun way to explore’ and can be purchased online at www.treasuretrails.co.uk or often in tourist information offices. There are a series of clues which take you all around a particular area, giving you facts and some history about local sites, whilst you find the answers to each piece of evidence and finally eliminate all but one name and the weapon used. At that point you have the guilty party! There are many places to explore and it is a great way to get to know somewhere. Not all are murder mystery trails, so have a look and

27 see if there is one where you live or are visiting. It really is a fun way to get around! There were twelve of us taking the challenge that night, wanting to solve the mystery. We tried to guess from the list of people we were given, who ‘did it’ before we started. Julie got it right! How did she know I wonder… Was she really an accomplice? Now Nellie’s imagination was running riot and she was just taking this too far. I have had words with her. It was so much fun. Some of the clues do need some deciphering, others are more straight forward, but each step takes you further and further around the town. Wimborne is a fabulous place to shop and visit. The Minster looming up to the sky right in the town centre, the Jubilee Gardens, the old grandiose school house now housing flats for local residents, the River meandering through, the Quarterjack on the West Tower, with his brightly uniformed grenadier, who still strikes the quarters every

hour, day and night, the more modern statue of a skateboarder. What a wealth of interest to see. Even in the dark! You do not have to do this walk in the dark of course, but Nellie likes to be different and it all added to the ambience of our quest. The bright torches were useful to say the least. We solved the mystery! After all that investigating we were quite exhausted. Like Nellie we are getting on a bit now… Time for something to eat and drink. We had actually booked a carvery at the Bridge House Hotel in Longham. Delicious and great value, Nellie highly recommends it in fact. Probably because you can pile up your plate and go back for seconds. You don’t get thighs like that on lettuce leaves… Well we can safely say that Ivana from the Choir can rest in peace. Nellie isn’t giving you the answer as you could find out for yourself who did it… Where will Nellie take us next? By Debbie Corney

It's never too soon to get children interested in gardening and where their food comes from. Even the fussiest child should be prepared to try a warm, sweet strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or a handful of peas out of the pod (my Dad often wondered why half of his pea crop had suddenly disappeared although I'm sure he had his suspicions!) At any time of the year, children can start to understand the concept of things growing from seed if you give them a packet of cress seeds and, although they can be grown in a shallow tray, make it even more fun by saving the shells from
their breakfast boiled eggs that have had their tops cut off. Draw a face on the eggshell and fill with peat free compost or even moist kitchen roll and sprinkle with seeds. When it grows the little egg man will have a mop of green hair that they can snip and eat. In the spring, let them have a competition growing the tallest sunflower by learning how to feed and water them. They can keep some dried out seeds for next year and feed the rest to the birds in winter. Although they might shy away from anything green on their plates, they might find plenty of chopped chives, basil, marjoram/oregano and/or thyme only improves their favourite pizza or Bolognese sauce.

Tastes so good... Steak and Sweet Potato Chips
February is the month of love. And a beautifully cooked steak is a wonderful way to have a romantic meal a deux, simply and easily. It’s not that hard to dish up a fabulous supper that is sure to please if you follow the simple instructions.
Ingredients 2 x 200g sirloin steaks 350g sweet potatoes 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 50g bag mixed spinach, watercress and rocket Handful of cherry tomatoes 1/3 cucumber, sliced 2 spring onions Coarse ground black pepper. For the dressing 1 tsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp rapeseed oil ½ small garlic clove, crushed

Preheat oven to 200c. Half fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Add in the potatoes once chopped and cook for 4 minutes. Drain and return to the saucepan. Pour the oil over and season with a little black pepper. Toss until the potatoes are all lightly coated with the oil and seasoning. Tip the potatoes onto a baking tray and cook for 15 minutes. Turn them all then cook for a further 10 minutes or until crisp and golden. Whilst the chips are cooking, prepare your steak. Trim off any hard fat and then rub all over with the remaining oil. Season with 1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper. Using a griddle or non-stick frying pan, put over a high heat and then add the steaks. Cook for about 2 minutes each side or done until your liking. Set aside and mix the salad leaves, cucumber, chopped spring onions into a bowl. Whisk the vinegar, oil and garlic together. Lovingly lay out the chips and steak onto your plates and add the salad to one side. Drizzle with the dressing just before serving.

Now, here’s a question that you might not know the answer to but will almost certainly have an opinion on. Is the Range Rover Sport one of the most influential cars of the modern era? A decade or so ago it seemed like all the celebrities were arriving to events in a Range Rover Sport, and since then the SUV market has exploded. Now nearly everybody wants one. Furthermore, almost every manufacturer is now making them. The Sport is not really a full-blown Range Rover. It’s cheaper for a start, and comes with five seats, but it does offer the option of seven. That said, the additional chairs are tiny and aren’t appropriate for fitting kids’ car seats. This is a lower, smaller ‘Rangie’, designed to appeal to a slightly less affluent, but still successful, crowd. And the focus has moved from out-and-out luxury to one that is more about power and pure on-road use. Of course, it’s a Range Rover, so it is well equipped, and the interior is of a high quality. The Windsor leather seats are impeccable - but the Sport is quite different to the full ‘Range Rover’. There are three diesels, two petrols, and even a new hybrid powertrain to choose from - and all are tuned primarily for clout. Only the entry level TDV6 feels a little
lacking, but equally I couldn’t recommend the powerful eight-cylinder petrol engine on offer - unless you own a small oil producing nation. This will really eat away at your cash reserves. Being designed for on-road action, rather than the full-blown Range Rover’s off-road capability, the Sport comes with optional air suspension. This keeps it comfortable and composed, even when cornering hard. The issue with driving it fast is more the size than the capability of the car. Britain’s most enjoyable roads are just a bit too small to be throwing a two-tonne SUV around, however good it might be. The Range Rover Sport is a status symbol, a luxury cruiser, and an enjoyable car to drive hard. But it’s expensive to buy and run - especially with its more commanding engines. And it’s not certain that the new hybrid unit can deliver on the claimed figures. Nevertheless, those who want one won’t be put off by such trivial matters.
