What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had 5 fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude!

First World War Memorial at All Saints Church, Southbourne
Walter Cobb & Edwin Vincent Young
In the hurried preparations for war, in 1914, many men died in training, flying and naval accidents without ever leaving these shores. Walter Cobb was born in 1871 and by 1911 was married to Annie Eliza Cobb and the father of Walter, aged 14, and daughter Constance Elizabeth, 12. The family lived at 25 Rosebery Road, Boscombe before moving to 7 Abinger Road, Bournemouth. Although pensioned out of the Royal Navy by 1911, the outbreak of war found Walter serving again as Chief Petty Officer on board the Royal Navy training ship, and depot for boy artifices (cadets), HMS Fisgard II. On September 17th, 1914 the Fisgard was being towed towards Cromarty, down a diversionary route in the channel to avoid enemy submarines, when she foundered during a gale... 'the ship met with such rough weather in the channel that her engine broke loose and gave her such a list that she was compelled to try to return to Portland in a terrible plight. She reached Portland about 4.30 yesterday afternoon, and after a few moments buffeting turned turtle in the sight of hundreds of spectators ashore, and sank immediately.’1 No boy artifices were on board, the company of 64 being mainly crew, dockworkers and labourers. Despite jumping overboard and boats racing to the scene Walter Cobb, aged 44, and 20 others died that afternoon. Edwin Vincent Young was born in 1890, the son of Edwin, a house painter, and Annie Young, and grew up with his four younger brothers Robert, Percy, John, Rueben and younger sister Lily at 9 Norwood Place, Pokesdown. Edwin attended the Lad’s Institute, Stourvale Road, Pokesdown (now the Stourvale Centre) founded in 1905 by Miss Ellen Mary Anstie ‘to give the poor local lads some Christian Guidance' and ‘a place they could call their own in which to participate in a variety of activities and burn off some of their youthful energy.’2 Edwin, 21 in 1911, was already at sea with the Royal Navy. By 1914 he had achieved the rank of Stoker 1st Class on HMS Bulwark stationed in Sheerness Harbour. On November 26th, 1914 the Bulwark was moored on the River Medway after taking on coal...
HMS Fisgard II ‘HMS Bulwark was blown up in Sheerness Harbour at 8 o’clock this morning, it is believed owing to an explosion in her magazine.’ ‘The first Lord of the Admiralty (Mr Winston Churchill), in the House of Commons, when announcing the disaster, said the admiralty was convinced that an internal magazine had exploded and rent the ship asunder. There was no upheaval of water. The Bulwark had entirely disappeared when the smoke cleared away. ...... the loss of life was very severe. The Bulwark disappeared in three minutes. The explosion shook every building in the vicinity, and some of the debris was thrown six miles.'3 The disaster killed 796 men including Stoker, 1st Class, Edwin Vincent Young, aged 25. Such sacrifices, though indirectly caused by WW1, were no less noble for the circumstances of their deaths as each had pledged to serve Britain at home or abroad during the conflict. Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and final tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barfleur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. What happens if you don’t have a Power of Attorney? Arranging a Power of Attorney before it’s too late is critical to avoiding heartache for friends and family later. None of us likes to think about a time in life when we’re no longer able to make our own decisions. But should that moment come, it’ll affect every part of your life – from your home to your finances to your medical care. It’s shocking to realise that as many as 1 in 3 over the age of 65 will suffer dementia, but of course, an unexpected accident can strike anytime. Vigilant Town Centre Rangers Respond Rapidly to Life-Threatening Emergency Whilst patrolling the streets on one busy June weekend, the on-duty team of Bournemouth Town Centre BID Rangers received a radio call from the town centre camera operators. Asking for assistance, they informed them that a woman appeared to be having a medical episode under the Lucerne Arch on Old Christchurch Road. Responding quickly to the call, Town Centre Bid Rangers Dave Dowling and Rosie Cook immediately headed to the scene. Dorset Police and Bournemouth Borough Council jointly operate the town centre cameras, and often contact the Town Centre BID Rangers to act as first responders and to be their ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground. Established in 2012, the Bournemouth Town Centre BID Rangers work in conjunction with the Council, Police, CCTV and Shopwatch Scheme to help make the town centre a safer place. Dave and Rosie arrived at the incident and began to assist the woman who had fallen and hit her head. A member of the public had already called for an ambulance however it soon became clear that sadly the woman was exhibiting symptoms of substance abuse. After around 5 minutes the woman began to lose consciousness. Town Centre Ranger, Dave Dowling said: “On duty in the town centre, we were able to respond quickly to the call from the town cameras and help the woman as her condition declined. All our
Rangers receive First Aid at Work Training and go on regular courses.’’ Whilst Dave was monitoring the woman, he observed a decline in her breathing and began chest compressions. The ambulance then arrived, and after receiving assistance the woman began to regain consciousness and was taken away by the ambulance crew. Bob Carter, Head Ranger comments: “This was the first incident of this type we have seen in three years. I am really proud of our Rangers and commend them for calmly controlling the situation over the space of an hour until expert medical professionals arrived.’’ Following the incident, the Bournemouth Town Centre BID received praise from holidaymaker and eye-witness to the event, Ms Lloyd from Wales. “Your Rangers do a wonderful job in Bournemouth’s town centre and they probably saved the girls life.’’ For further information about the Bournemouth Town Centre BID, visit www.towncentrebid.co.uk.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

29 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. Innovative Coastal BID Campaign Comes Second in Prestigious National Awards The Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) has been presented with the runner-up award for the ‘Best Digital Highstreet Scheme’ at the Association of Town and City Management Awards. With hundreds of entries from across the country considered, second place represents a huge achievement for the Coastal BID and its Go Bournemouth Coast augmented reality app. The ATCM Awards showcase best practice in town and city management across the UK and Ireland.

Dead-heading and Seed collecting
You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.
When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.
However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the

Compton Acres’ Charity Advocate Shaves Her Hair for Alzheimer’s Research UK Alzheimer’s charity champion, Dani Bevis has said goodbye to her hair to help support those struggling with dementia and to honour her late great-grandmother’s memory. A member of the Café & Tearoom’s team at Compton Acres, Dani undertook her charity head shave surrounded by her co-workers, family and friends. She has already exceeded her initial target of £250, raising a total of £417 so far for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Currently, 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. Aiding the national charity through her fundraising, Dani is contributing to Alzheimer’s Research UK’s mission to fund pioneering preventions and treatments for dementia. She has set up a Just Giving page which is still open for those who want to help Dani raise further funds. Danielle Bevis said: “Dementia can be devasting for families. For our family, it was our Great Nan. We watched a clever, strong, witty and funny woman deteriorate into someone we didn’t know anymore. To help others facing similar situations, I decided to shave my hair, which anyone at Compton Acres will tell you is my greatest vanity, for Alzheimer’s Research UK. I would like to thank the team at Compton Acres and everyone who came out on the day to support me.’’

Big Ride cyclists brave the heat for Julia’s House A hundred and twenty riders braved sweltering heat to take part in The Big Ride, a new cycling event organised by Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospice.

Previously run as the Hospice-toHospice ride, with a route between the Dorset hospice in Corfe Mullen and the Wiltshire hospice in Devizes, this year it changed venue and name in favour of a new circular route starting from Larmer Tree Gardens. Cyclists chose between a 50 and 100 mile ride through beautiful open countryside, villages – and up a couple of killer hills! There were several welcome refreshment stops along the way and at the end of their journey the cyclists were presented with medals and treated to a celebratory hog roast and glass of Prosecco. Last year’s ride raised £63,000 and early signs are that this is likely to be matched. Among those joining the ride was Julia’s House Director of Care Ali Acaster and
Parent Ambassador Charles Andrews along with 10 of his colleagues from engineering firm Meggitt. Charles, whose 14-year-old daughter Katherine receives care from Julia’s House, has had a very active week – he is currently taking part in the charity’s Trek the Alps challenge event. Big thank you to all the Julia’s House volunteers for manning checkpoints, refreshments and road crossings and to sponsors Addo Food Group, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Muc Off, Emily Crisps and Pedals Cycle Centre.

MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
