Bournemouth’s “New” Museum! The Bournemouth Natural Science Society receives Museum Accreditation The Bournemouth Natural Science Society (BNSS) is thrilled to announce its successful application to the Museum Accreditation Scheme. Our Museum Committee has been working hard for a long time to get our documents in order and up to scratch and it is a credit to them that we are now an Accredited Museum. The origins of the BNSS actually started 150 years ago, with the 19th century passion for collecting natural objects. These early collections are now housed in the Society’s Victorian villa at 39 Christchurch Road which is open to the public on Tuesday mornings, between 10am and 12.30pm. From archaeology to zoology, the BNSS has something to inspire and amaze! Accreditation is granted by the Arts Council England (ACE) to museums that meet the stringent requirements imposed by their Accreditation Standard. The BNSS joins the 1,800 other museums participating in the scheme, working to manage their collections effectively for the enjoyment and benefit of users. The Museums Association’s 1998 definition of a museum is that ‘Museums enable people to explore collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment. They are institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artefacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society’ and the BNSS is working to ensure we meet this definition.
And the work doesn’t stop here! We are continuing to catalogue and photograph our collections and make them more accessible to the community. As well as our regular Tuesday morning sessions, we also run two open days during the year. The next one is coming up on Saturday 16th April, in collaboration with the Dorset Wildlife Trust. Our Young Explorers group meets once a month and we welcome educational visits from organisations and groups of all ages! Our Accreditation status is renewed every three years to ensure we are keeping up to standard. Of course, none of this would be possible without our wonderful and dedicated volunteers and members, who give their time and enthusiasm to make the BNSS what it is. Finally ditch your rubbish bank account and earn up to £150 More people complain to me about their bank than anything else, but only 2% of people switched last year. So stop moaning and start switching. So many banks want your business that they’re willing to pay you to switch – either straight cash such as £100 to move to them, or up to 5% interest on your savings. Check your iPhone to prevent huge data use If you’ve upgraded your iPhone to iOS 9, beware. It automatically turns on ‘Wi-Fi Assist’ which means if your WiFi connection’s weak it supplements it with pricey mobile data. If you think you’ve started using data more quickly, this is likely why. To turn it off, go into Mobile Data in settings, then scroll down to turn ‘Wi-Fi Assist’ off. Check if you’re due up to £212/year with the marriage tax allowance If you’re married or in a civil partnership, you may be able to get up to £212 a year more in your pocket with the new marriage allowance. It’s a way for couples to transfer a proportion of their personal allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each tax year) between them. You’ll be eligible if: • You’re married or in a civil partnership • One of you earns £10,600 or less • The other is a basic 20% rate taxpayer • You were both born after 6 April 1935 If so, you can shift £1,060 of their allowance to the other which means you don’t pay tax on it, a gain of £212. Wildlife News
Talking about Wildlife...
Wildlife springs into action! When ‘proper’ spring arrives – not just the mild early winter weather that fooled some plants into blooming in December! – our local wildlife springs into action. Verges, hedgerows and woods become adorned with dainty flowers such as primroses, celandines, wood anemones and violets. A little later on the scene are the wonderful blue carpets in our ancient woodlands. Bluebells spend most of the year as bulbs underground and millions of bulbs may exist in one wood. So that they can attract the attention of pollinating insects, all of these plants flower early in the growing season, before the trees start to block out the sunlight with their fresh new leaves and before taller, more vigorous plants start to smother them. Birds are stirring too. Get up around sunrise and just open a window to hear songbirds crooning at the tops of their voices to attract a mate. Even better, make the effort to stroll through a wood at dawn to appreciate the sheer joy of the birds’ choral symphony. Of course, no spring is really complete until you have heard the calls of a chiffchaff and a cuckoo – sadly the latter is becoming much rarer these days. Frogs are also turning their thoughts to love. Enthusiastic splashing in a pool of water may signal the imminent arrival of a squidgy lump
of frogspawn. If you are lucky enough to have a pond in your own garden, or to live near a wild one, keep a watch to see when the wriggly black tadpoles emerge, usually about three weeks after the appearance of the spawn. Other good signs that spring is finally with us are the graceful flight of the yellow brimstone butterfly, the gentle buzzing of bumblebees and the competitive ‘boxing’ matches of brown hares in the fields. It’s a great time of year to be outside in the countryside because there’s so much to see and hear. King’s Park Nursery, Pokesdown King’s Park Nursery have been growing plants for Bournemouth’s Parks and Gardens on the same site since 1924. Tucked away in the Pokesdown corner of King’s Park (Christrchurch Road entrance), the nursery is open to the public between April and October – this year opening on Saturday April 9th at 10am and for the very first time, you will be able to buy your plants on Sundays too. Chris Evans, Nursery Manager, and award-winning horticulturalist (he and his team have won Gold and Best in Show at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show, Silver Guild at the Hampton Court Flower Show, plus several gold medals at the RHS Tatton Flower Show for their bedding displays) is on-hand to provide advice and guidance on which plants will thrive in our local climate. The Nursery has seen a resurgance in popularity in the past few years, with more people discovering the nursery and telling their friends and family about the wide variety of plants on offer, and the expert advice they have received. The vibrant hanging baskets and spring/summer bedding are popular
choices – the nursery also grow these for the displays across the town, often contributing to ‘Bournemouth in Bloom’ awards. The team at the nursery are all gardening enthusiasts. They are a mixture of volunteer supporters and horticultural staff who are keen to pass on tips and help with garden design ideas. Chris is looking forward to opening on 9th April once again for the season. He said ‘People are often suprised at the broad range of plants we have in our nursery – and that the prices aren’t high. The team and I enjoy giving customers advice and helping them choose the right plants for their gardens.’ He’s also looking for more volunteers to come and help in the nursery: “Our volunteer team is a mixture of people from all ages and backgrounds. Mini Cooper S Clubman By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
The old Mini Clubman was no oil-painting, but this one could easily earn its place on the podium at Legs 11. It’s a looker alright. The brand new Mini Clubman must have been breast fed at birth, because it’s far bigger than its siblings. That doesn’t mean it’s fat – no way. This car is well formed and its proportions are just right. And because it’s not exactly a shrinking violet, the Clubman is likely to win over quirkier types who might otherwise have gone for mid-size family car choices, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The story hasn’t always been good for the Clubman, though. The first generation had a useless, single rear door that meant UK passengers were forced to step into the road. This didn’t help sales and the Clubman therefore wasn’t exactly the rock star that BMW, Mini’s owner, was expecting. But the Germans have seen the light and the previous rear-hinged ‘clubdoor’, has been kicked to the kerb in favour of two ‘normal’ back doors. They make it far easier for passengers to get in and out of the car. Then there’s the barn-door boot. You’ll remember that from the last model. Well, that stays put, but now the doors can be released manually, or if you ticked the hands-free tailgate option, a sassy little kick under the rear bumper will open them up. Inside, the comfortable seats are kind to your backside and feel supportive, especially during long periods on the road. The car’s uncluttered dashboard is dwarfed by a massive screen that sits where the speedometer on older Minis used to be. The controller on the central console manages most of the Clubman’s systems, so there are fewer buttons on the dash to confuse or divert you. As the Clubman is the largest of the current Mini litter, it has, predictably, the most capacious cabin. To be frank, with a big load area too, the word ‘mini’ seems rather outmoded. The whole motor is 270mm longer than the five-door Hatchback, allowing for oodles
of room in the front and respectable space for two adults in the rear. The boot is about the same as a VW Golf’s, so you’ll get the family shopping in – and a toddler’s buggy. The Cooper S Clubman Auto is easily the most gratifying to drive. Out at the Mini’s media launch on the roads surrounding San Sebastian in northern Spain, the most powerful petrol drove gokart-like on the straights - just as a Mini should. It’s a shame the slightly pulpy suspension can drizzle on your chips in the corners, with body roll kicking in if you enter the twisty bits too hard. But that can be forgiven, because the Cooper S generates more than enough pull to keep you cheery. 189bhp can be squeezed from the S’ 2.0 litre turbocharged fourcylinder lump, and with the eight speed auto box, a zero to 62mph sprint in 7.1 seconds is easily achievable, finishing up with a top speed of 142mph. Even though these figures might make the car sound insatiable for fuel – it’s not. Christchurch and Bournemouth will feature in new novel by local author Christchurch and Bournemouth feature in the new mystery thriller, The Grave Concerns of Jennifer Lloyd, from Bournemouth novelist, Ian Kingsley. Few fictional characters come over as strongly as those in this work, especially Jennifer Lloyd, a newbie television presenter out to make a name for herself by unmasking a murderer live on-camera—despite deaththreats. Book Viral summed the work up as ‘a fine melding of mystery thriller and contemporary fiction,’ in which ‘the author’s inspired touch allows for a timely infusion of humour’ in an ‘exceptionally entertaining’ book. In essence, it has the character depth you normally only expect of a contemporary novel mixed with the impetus of a thriller. From her abused and broken background, its narrator and protagonist, Jennifer Lloyd, needs a friend: the reader. And her close relationship with the reader is what allows her laconic humour to come to the fore. The American Midwest Book Review describes the work as ‘a powerful and compelling read that’s hard to put down.’ Readers will be entertained by the complexity of Jen’s life and mesmerised
by the twists and turns in this unusual page-turner. ‘Entertaining’ is the word which keeps cropping up in reviews, so it’s worth setting aside some time for a treat that offers the bonus of local flavour. The paperback is out in April, and an eBook during the summer. Many settings around Christchurch will be recognisable to locals. Kingsley’s first novel, Sandman, also had a local setting.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van It was Nellie’s Birthday recently. She is now officially 200,000 kilometres old! How old? She is doing really well, for an oldie. Well can you believe it but I have never driven her… until now! She has been a part of the family for three and a half years, and I have never sat in the driver’s seat. I am not usually a nervous driver and will get in any car to drive off with no worries at all. For some reason I have not reached to take the wheel and Stephen has done all the driving. Nellie is a Japanese, ‘automatic’ girl (this is a family magazine so I will refrain from making any jokes about that...) and everything is backwards to what I know. Watching Stephen pull this lever, push that button and generally not drive anything like I drive my little Citroen (mind you has anyone seen me on the road?) had put me right off. I decided I was not to be beaten, and that I would finally sit in the driver’s seat and Nellie and I would drive off into the sunset together. So off we set for a car park... to practice. I was nervous I can tell you. I felt like I was going to an exam that I was totally unprepared for. Ever had that feeling? Hayden in the back was not much better, asking if I really wanted to do this? Some vote of confidence that was. So we arrived. Stephen got out and ceremoniously handed me the keys. I got down from my safe, highly
Nellie is officially 200,000 km old! respectable passenger’s seat and moved over.... to the driver’s seat. The first thing I needed to do was adjust the leg space as I was a foot short of the pedals. Not very helpful. I pulled the lever and lurched forward at speed, nearly shooting myself through the windscreen. Not the best start. Hayden found it highly amusing and burst out laughing. I think it was nervous hysteria. Stephen just stood there, smiling calmly while I tried to not look too embarrassed. Head held high in the air of course. So, the window wipers are on the left not the right, the lights and indicators on the right not the left, there is no handbrake, no clutch and no gears. Easy, what was I worried about? It isn’t that different... is it? Then there is the question of the brakes which have to be coordinated with the position of the parking, driving and reversing lever. Oh what was I doing? Well I managed to move forward, slowly. I even managed to turn big old Nellie

around and drive onto the small road but to my dismay it was cordoned off a little further down. How many roadworks at the moment? Now I had to reverse into someone’s driveway. Suddenly a car appeared wanting to get into the very same driveway! It really is a wonder I am here to tell the tale at all. Carefully and calmly, well sort of, I did it! I reversed with not a damaged daffodil in sight, and we started moving forward again. I drove back to the safe haven of the car park and stopped, breathing a sigh of relief. I asked Hayden if he was ok in the back and there was somewhat of a hesitation before a weak voice replied, “Er, yes...” I wasn’t convinced and I think Nellie was feeling the strain too. Stephen continued to smile - I think it was a fixed grin to get him through the moment. But I had done it. I could now drive Nellie! A real treat after all my efforts, was Nellie then taking Stephen and I to see Elkie Brooks at the Tivoli in Wimborne! I have loved Elkie for years and can often be heard singing in the car at the top of my voice to, “Fool if you think it’s over” and others. If you haven’t heard me, it is just as well!

Debbie in the driving seat! I couldn’t believe it, but similar to Nellie, Elkie had had her 71st Birthday a few days earlier. How wonderful to still be performing at that standard, 39 years after her first visit to the Tivoli. The theatre was packed, literally there was not an empty seat in sight. We all swayed, hummed and smiled through good old “Pearl’s a Singer”, “I think I am going back”, “Gasoline Alley”, “Nights in White Satin” and many more great favourites. If you are under 50 you may not have a clue what I am talking about! Apologies for that, just showing my age again. One gentleman (and he wasn’t that young either) even managed to scramble up onto the high stage with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately he was taken back stage and returned unable to give Elkie the flowers himself. I do hope she got them. Elkie has quite a sense of humour too and she certainly made us laugh at times! It was a brilliant evening. Elkie had a standing ovation at the end and Nellie was thrilled to bits. A great end to a very successful day. Where will Nellie take us next... and who will be driving? LEEK AND POTATO SOUP
An easy recipe that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. It is a perfect meal for either lunch or dinner and can be served with bread or without. Enjoy as a starter or a main course and add pepper if you choose.
Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 225g of potatoes (cut into cubes) 2 medium leaks (sliced) 1 onion (sliced) 1 tbsp of vegetable oil 1.2 litres of vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 150ml double cream or crème fraiche
Equipment: 2 large pans, hand blender or blender Stove: High enough to boil Method: Take a large pan and pour in the oil. Then add the onions, leeks and potatoes and cook until they have soften. Do this for 3-4 minutes. Proceed to add the vegetable stock and bring it all to the boil. Then add the seasoning and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Once you have done this whizz all of it together (you can do this either with a hand blender or a blender). Reheat all the mixture in a clean pan. You can then stir in some cream or crème fraiche. Serve with bread and butter if you choose.

1 Big Run - 1 Man - over 500 Miles in only 21 days Unlike the Proclaimers walking 500 miles, Westbourne based David Smith, will be attempting to run 500 miles across the UK for two great causes next month in only 21 days. David, who turns 50 later this year, found endurance running later on in life is determined to turn his new passion into a fantastic fundraising challenge for both Forest Holme Hospice in Poole and Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS). David said; “Running is just something I love to do. With me approaching my 50th year, it has given me a new focus in life and I’m determined to complete this challenge to the best of my ability within the 21 days. I’m really looking forward to the whole experience and hope that my efforts can help raise much needed funds for both charities.” Working out at over a marathon a day, David will kick off his 500 mile journey by descending the zip wire at the end of Bournemouth Pier at 12noon on Saturday April 9. Originally from Scotland, but having lived in Dorset for 20 years, David felt the time was right to take on this gruelling challenge of running from one end of the country to the other. He plans to arrive in George Square in Glasgow on Saturday April 30, having run via both children’s hospices based in Kinross and Loch Lomond. Forest Holme Hospice Charity’s Manager, Anne Currie said; “We’d like thank David for taking on this truly
inspirational challenge on behalf of both charities. Having the ability to run one marathon is an achievement in itself, but to do 21 in a row is really something else. We wish David all the very best for his big run and for supporting the life-enhancing work of Forest Holme Hospice.” CHAS’ Head of Community Fundraising, Sarah Secombes added; “Good luck to David in his taking on this challenge for CHAS and Forest Holme Hospice. It’s an incredible feat and we are so grateful for all his efforts. All the money raised for CHAS will help to support children with life-shortening conditions in Scotland when they need it most, so a huge thank-you from all of us.”

On Your Plot
April showers to October fun It’s wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years!

• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear
Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Southbourne Retired Mens Club Friendship Club
The Southbourne Friendship Club commenced it’s 56th season on September 2nd. We offer 33 weeks of musical entertainments, speakers and quizzes etc. We meet each Wednesday at 2:15pm in the Immanuel Church Hall Southbourne. Membership is open to all persons over 60yrs. There is a joining fee of £8 and £1 per week to include tea and biscuits.
Thursday 12th May is the date for the next meeting of the Boscombe and Southbourne Probus Club which is the AGM. Outings are normally organised once a month and most are open to wives and partners. Our meetings are held at : The Liston Hotel, 5 Wollstonecraft Road, Boscombe.
