A man of experience on the merger Robert Talbot, Poole Hospital’s Medical Director and experienced surgeon, explains how the proposed merger of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals and Poole Hospital NHS foundation trusts will provide even better healthcare in Dorset. “Should the merger go ahead, we will not only sustain vital services for patients but provide even better care. There are increasing expectations for consultantled care, seven days a week, which are not sustainable on both sites. The merger will allow us to unify or centralise some services that we currently duplicate, while providing as muc h as we can on both sites so that patients don’t have to travel unnecessarily. “We want to provide the best emergency care to patients with urgent surgical problems, by giving the surgeons sufficient dedicated time, and the necessary support services, to treat patients with an acute surgical need at any time of day or night. There is good evidence that patients have a better outcome after some complex operations if their team carries out the procedure frequently.

Talking about Wildlife...
Springtime on the heaths Springtime welcomes the appearance of many heathland species after the winter. Heathlands are a unique habitat for wildlife, and Dorset heaths rate amongst the best in Europe, providing a habitat year round for many rare and threatened species. The devastating fire on Upton Heath in 2011 destroyed thousands of animals, but thanks to the efforts of Dorset Wildlife Trust, local authorities, businesses and many volunteers, the heath is on way to recovery. To aid this, last year a small herd of Shetland and British White cattle were introduced to graze the heath, with the support of SITA Trust. Both bird watchers and reptile enthusiasts will find something on the heaths. Woodlarks, Dartford warblers and nightjars are all found there, happily flitting amongst heather and gorse. Be careful, though, as some will be building their nests on the ground in the early spring, so make sure to stay on designated paths and not disturb them. As the days get warmer, the reptiles emerge to bask in the sun. All six British reptiles – sand lizard, common lizard, smooth snake, adder, grass snake and slow worm - can be found on the Dorset heaths. Smooth snake and sand lizard are heath land specialists, not found in any other environment. The best time to see the shy sand lizard is April, when the males turn a beautiful emerald green, but only for a short period of
time. There is no shortage of denizens of the insect world, either. Both the exotic wasp spider and the green tiger beetle appear on the heathland scene in April. Heathlands are of significant environmental and historical value, but have become much reduced in the last few decades. To help preserve heaths and their vulnerable wildlife, please always make sure your dog is on a short lead between March and August. East Dorset Bee Keeping Association The East Dorset Bee Keeping Association works hard to protect the honey bees in our area. It is active in the collection of swarms in the summer months and recruiting new members and nurturing them as responsible and caring protectors of our precious inheritance. The Association tries to help members by organising a programme of meetings throughout the year, including practical demonstrations in the open season at their apiary in West Moors. It also forms a platform where beekeepers can meet to discuss and follow up their common interest. The group is active on Facebook and has its own website www.edbka.org.uk both giving information on their events and how to become a Beekeeper. If you encounter a bee swarm this summer,

Money may be a bit tight sometimes but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop. Indeed it can mean the complete opposite. Think of the times you’ve had in your life that have been great. Have they always been the ones that have involved money? Not necessarily. Read on for some simple ideas that you can do alone or with your friends and family that cost little or nothing but could bring a great deal of pleasure. Dig out some cards or board games. When did you last sit down and play draughts, or crib? Traditional games are just that - traditional because they stand the test of time. Google the rules if you don’t know how to play - there’s no excuse! Don your wellies, make a little flask of tea and go out for a good old stomp across the beach or if you’re not lucky enough to live near the coast, a local field or nature reserve. There are always places to walk. Get the wind through your hair and aim to be out for a good part of the day. You should sleep better at night too. Check out local galleries and museums. Often these are free and they can hold a good range of interesting exhibits. When the weather gets nicer, stick a tent up in your garden and ‘go camping’ for the night! Grab some pencils or paints and just draw for the pleasure of it. Even if the end result isn’t going to be put into the Tate just the act of putting pen (or brush) to paper is rather therapeutic.

And it’s not a bad objective to have. You see, the B-MAX is aimed at people just like me – parents of young kids who need their motor to be spacious and practical – not just fashionable. If you’ve never had to cope with a struggling two year old then you won’t know what I’m on about, but seriously, trying to fit your grumpy toddler into a car seat isn’t the first thing your aching back wants on a Monday morning. So, Ford came up with a solution - the ‘Easy Access Door System’. Research was painstaking; it involved engineers going ‘undercover’ to observe drivers in their daily routine – going shopping or picking up their children from school. The answer they came up with combines conventional, hinged front doors and rear sliding doors, in a new body design. This integrates the traditional central pillar structure into the front and rear doors, rather than forming part of the body shell itself, and creates a huge, clear opening - more than 1.5 metres wide. This is around twice the width offered by competitors with alternative door concepts and makes it significantly easier to enter or exit the rear seats, attend to your children in their child seats, or load and unload shopping. The B-MAX’s twin sliding rear doors also make access easier in crowded streets or narrow parking bays. The front and rear doors can be opened completely independently, so the front or rear cabin can be accessed as required. But it doesn’t stop there - a flexible and easy-to-use seating system features 60/40 split rear seats which can be folded flat with a simple ‘one-hand, onemotion’ mechanism. Furthermore, the front passenger seat can be folded, creating an extensive flat load floor capable of swallowing loads up to 2.34 metres long. That means you’ll get a decent length Christmas tree or even a proper surfboard in the car! Behind the wheel, the seating position is high and comfortable. The steering wheel is chunky and reassuring to grip and all the controls are very user friendly. The performance and average fuel economy of the 1.6-litre TDCi model I drove was more than adequate on my motorway test run, with excessive wind noise around the wing mirrors being the only disappointing aspect. The top of the range ‘Titanium’ vehicle came with all the trimmings, including cruise control, auto headlamps, rain sensitive wipers and a powerful Sony entertainment system.
Of course if, like me, your home is full of nappies, dolls and toy cars then you won’t be so bothered about the quality of your car stereo system or blustery sounds around your wing mirrors. You’ll be more interested in transporting your little ones in the safest car you can afford. Ford has realised this, so even though ease of access has been a key focus with the B-MAX, the company has not ignored protection. In fact the B-MAX has been awarded the highest possible five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP. Ford is so committed to this aspect of its product that it subjected the B-MAX to many crash tests during development. This included 5000 simulated computer crashes, 40 complete crash tests and a further 100 tests which involved the car being mounted on a sled and fired into a barrier. High strength and ultra-high strength steels form more than 58 per cent of the B-MAX body and are used in brackets, called crash-catchers; these lock the ingenious Ford Easy Access Door System in place if the vehicle suffers a side-impact. The B-MAX is also equipped with seven airbags and the front-end is carefully engineered for optimised pedestrian protection. In addition, the car features Ford’s Active City Stop system – a segment-first designed to help you avoid low speed collisions with stationary or slower moving traffic. And there’s more: the B-MAX features Ford’s voice-activated, in-car connectivity system, SYNC, with Emergency Assistance, designed to assist you to call for help in the event of a crash. Quite simply, the B-MAX is a car which is likely to attract many young families. But watch out Ford, your dealers may need to provide extra crèche facilities to cope with the droves of wailing toddlers who are bound to accompany parents desperate for a test drive.

Family Adventure Festival 2013 New for 2013, the Family Adventure Festival is a new event for the town of Bournemouth and promises a great weekend of excitement at the end of the school holidays. The festival will feature a wide range of indoors and outdoors pursuits along with expert advice and the opportunity to purchase clothing and accessories. The event promises to be a fun family experience! The BH Live Adventure Hub will take place indoors at the Bournemouth International Centre from 31st May – 2nd June 2013, with numerous activities also taking place on the beautiful, award winning beach. The fantastic Animal Bike Tour are confirmed to wow the crowds with their amazing bike stunt demos, there’s a bushcraft area, rollapaluza, power boarding lessons, kite boarding demos and a whole lot more still to be confirmed!

Bournemouth Festival of Words The second annual Bournemouth Festival of Words will take place in venues across the town from 24th – 31st May 2013. Building on the success of last year’s event, the Festival will offer everyone with a love of words, in all their forms, the opportunity to take part in workshops, competitions and talks aimed at helping local people discover and develop their own talents through the inspiration of others. The Festival will be officially launched by the Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Phil StanleyWatts, at a Writers Networking Event on Friday 24th May and will kick off a week of events including writer’s workshops, a Poetry Slam, Heritage Walk in Boscombe and Flash Fiction Slam.
