I know things may never be quite the same again but there are many positives that have come out of this. We appreciate our NHS and salute those who sacrifice themselves to help others. We know our neighbours much better. We are polite when walking around the shops and give a nod and a smile when we are out and about. We exercise more. Cycle riding has never been so popular. Although the opportunity to enjoy Hampshire at its very finest might be somewhat hampered at the present, the cap va ng history of the county con nues to paint a picture of fascina ng finds and interes ng snippets that can be enjoyed from the safety of the great indoors. From a prac cally unknown zoo to a popular icon in the county, here are five more facts from around Hampshire.
Fans of the popular period drama Downton Abbey are proud to know that the real home of the Crawley family is actually in Hampshire. Highclere Castle plays the starring role in the much loved television series and has become an icon for fans all over the world. Although Highclere is noted for its high profile appearances, the castle is also home to a wealth of fascina ng artefacts, many of which make it onto the small screen. Interes ngly, the mahogany desk that is used so frequently by Lord Grantham was actually once in the possession of Napoleon himself!
Interes ngly, Whale Island is best known for its naval base however, prior to the second world war, the island was also used as a zoo for all manner of animals that had been sent to Britain’s high ranking o�cials as gi�s. Although li le to nothing remains of the zoo today, it is said that some of the animals that called Hampshire’s appropriately named Whale Island home included, leopards, polar bears, elephants, kangaroo, lions as well as an aviary which was rumoured to house many rare varie es of bird.
Were you aware that Romsey was credited with the building of the renowned Berthon Boats? These boats were created by Edward Lyon Berthon who was living at Romsey and whose special design allowed them to be collapsible. However, his original designs received much ridicule and and were generally dismissed. Berthon though received much support from a certain Samuel Plimsoll and the Berthon boats were later hailed and even commissioned by the Admiralty. Have you heard of the Hampshire sheep? The na ve breed began life in the county in the late 1820s and were first produced in the Hampshire Downs as a result of cross breeding with other local na ve breeds including the Old Hampshire. Interes ngly, the popularity of the breed quickly spread and the Hampshire Sheep would become the first recognised pedigree breed in the UK. Today, many of the heritage breeds suffer declines in number however the Hampshire Sheep Breeders’ Associa on works hard to keep up numbers of this special na ve breed for future genera ons.
Much of Whitchurch’s wealth was owed to its mills which were powered by the River Test. One such mill was owned by Henri Portal a Huguenot refugee fleeing from persecu on who established a paper mill. The paper produced from the mill became so widely respected that in 1724, the Bank of England later came to use the paper and con nues to use Portal paper to this day!

Council encourages residents to be responsible around wildlife Test Valley Borough Council is asking residents to be respectful of social distancing guidelines and mindful of wildlife when visiting nature reserves. Local parks and green spaces across the borough have been well used by many residents during the lockdown period. As the government issues new rules and lockdown eases, there will be more opportunities for residents to enjoy their local area. The authority is reminding residents to keep dogs under effective control or on a lead across nature reserves, to ensure that wildlife is undisturbed. Signage has been erected highlighting nesting areas, with additional signage displaying the government’s most recent advice for safely using green spaces and how to social distancing guidance can be
followed when outside. Portfolio holder for Community and Leisure, Councillor Ian Jeffrey, said: “As we see more restrictions lifted by central government, we are all enjoying more time in our nature reserves and green spaces. The government have issued guidance to help everyone keep safe by following social distancing whilst enjoying the outdoors. These guidelines are reflected in our signage around the borough. “At this time of year, there are also many water birds with vulnerable young and often use our nature reserves to raise their offspring. Whilst the vast majority of residents and visitors are respectful of wildlife, we must all work together to help the animals that call the borough their home, feel safe.”

Wellow Foodbank Collection During the first two weeks of the Corona Virus pandemic, food banks in the Trussell Trust network saw an increase in need of 81% compared to the same period in the previous year. This amounted to 6250 emergency food parcels sent out every day of which 3000 were for children. This spike in demand was also felt at our local food bank that supports Romsey, North Baddesley and the surrounding villages such as Wellow. A call was put out from the Romsey food bank for extra donations in the Romsey Advertiser and through social media channels. With that need in mind, members of Wellow Parish Council, initiated by Cllr Christopher Craig, and helped by Cllr Sue Jones and the Chair Cllr Gaye Chesterton-Kaye, (who kindly donated £50 from the chairs personal allowance) set up a food bank collection scheme in Wellow. Hilary Norris, a resident also volunteered to help with this worthy cause. Food donations were to be collected and then delivered directly to the Romsey Food Bank on a weekly basis. The first week produced a respectable amount of donations, but as each week progressed the volume of food more than doubled each time, so much so we completely filled two cars in order to make the delivery run. We would like to thank the amazing generosity of the people of Wellow and Landford, with some kindly donating every week, to keep the food bank in supply of essential items such as tinned food, long
life milk, baby food, nappies etc. A huge Thankyou also goes to the local businesses who donated substantial amounts of food and other items, some of which might have otherwise gone to waste. These included Carlos Ice Cream, The Red Rover Pub, Country Consumables and Green Hill Farm Caravan & Camping Park. The increase in donations meant that the Romsey Food Bank were able to meet the increase in demand as well as restock their storeroom during the most difficult period. The generosity and support of everyone who contributed was greatly appreciated. Now that lockdown has eased we now plan to continue the support on a monthly basis perhaps with a local donation point. In the meantime, if you wish to make any donations they would be very welcome. We can either arrange a collection or items can be dropped off at the helper’s addresses. Test Valley Business Awards Postponed for 2020 Due to the current situation with Covid-19 and the Coronavirus Lockdown, the Test Valley Business Awards has been postponed until Spring 2021. 2020 was to have been the 16th year of the awards, with the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony planned for September, celebrating business excellence throughout the Test Valley. The Steering Group and Gold Sponsors have confirmed that all entries for this year will be carried over to next year’s event with the current sponsors also staying on-board. A spokesperson for the Steering Group and Sponsors said, “While we are very disappointed the awards are not going
ahead this year it is more important that everyone stays safe.” Katie Brooks from the Steering Group added: “You are still able to enter your business online now and we will be having a major push in the final weeks before the judging. Unity receives Lottery Funding for further Covid Support Unity, a Test Valley charity are overjoyed to hear that they have been awarded a grant of £10,000 by the National Lottery Community Fund to enable them to build on work from the Covid 19 Helpline to provide a service beyond the reactive support currently on offer. This funding will enable Unity to offer more than just signposting support but to provide help to those who may need direct support as well as linking to groups, businesses and other services in the heart of the community. Unity volunteers come from a range of ages and social backgrounds, while most of the people needing help tend to be older people living alone, this project will add to a longer-term community cohesiveness by creating
new links and relationships between individuals. Unity Chief Executive Terry Bishop said: “The Covid crisis has created real hardship and our volunteers and the local groups are doing everything they can to ensure people have everything they need. Honey bees There are over 250 types of bees in the UK but there is only one european honey bee (Apis mellifera). Sadly our Honey Bees are not protected species so they need our help and support more than ever. They are vital for pollina on of crops and many flowering plants.
Why do bees swarm? Swarming is a honey bee colony's natural means of reproduc on. In the process of swarming, a single colony splits into two or more dis nct colonies. In this state the bees will be docile and should be quite easily be collected by a beekeeper. A swarm is usually a temporary phenomenon as the bees will be sending out scouts to look for a permanent home. When a new home is found, usually within 24 hours, the bees will fly off to start a new colony. Swarms in the New Forest normally occur between April un l mid-July.
Are swarms dangerous? A swarm of bees are generally unlikely to s ng. When bees swarm, they will gather in a ten to twenty metre area and will try to cluster on a branch or bush or even under the eaves of a roof. This will con nue for an hour or so, but they will eventually se le down and the large hanging cluster of bees will be clearly visible - this is a swarm. Call the Swarm Coordinator on 07976 258062 for help and advice. The most common insects are honeybees, bumblebees and wasps. There are other kinds of insects that are confused with these, such as Ivy bees, Solitary bees and hornets.

COVID-19 and Weight Management Since Covid-19, the true state of our health has never been so important to each and every one of us. Now is absolutely the right time to take control of our health and wellness long term so that we are not relying on the overloaded NHS system to correct our underlying health issues. Put simply, no amount of money, career, status, home or material belongings matter if we do not have our health! Wellness is a choice to assume responsibility for the quality of our life and begins with a conscious decision to shape a healthy lifestyle. It is a mindset, and a predisposition to adopt a series of key principles in various life areas that lead to high levels of well-being and life satisfaction. Reaching our optimal weight range is a vital part of being healthy and well. Being overweight or obese has been highlighted by health organisations during Covid-19 as an underlying health condition and this has brought a great deal of fear to many in an already worrying situation. Most people start trying to lose weight with the worst state of mind possible: wanting to “fix” themselves. We can easily jump into diets and exercise plans out of self-deprecation and when this happens we usually already feel overwhelmed with guilt, shame, frustration and helplessness to name just a few negative emotions! This is an extremely 24

difficult ‘place’ to start from and is the main reason many find it just too difficult to make change. Negative thinking can be destructive. Rather than focusing on the good that can come with weight loss – such as better health, a longer life, more enjoyment in everyday activities and the potential prevention of diabetes, heart disease and cancer we instead focus on our negative thoughts. Ultimately, a negative mindset leads to failure. The key to success is to have absolute clarity around our ‘What’ and our ‘Why’. Being able to FEEL the connection to this will help push us through the common barriers that stand in our way. It is also important to have the support in place to navigate these hurdles as they appear. Building resilience to life challenges (those ‘things’ that happen upon us, often unexpectedly) is another important part of weight loss and lifestyle change. Moving away from the ‘All or Nothing’ thinking and @mlggazettesnews
creating better thoughts and thinking patterns in its place, will strengthen our belief in our own success. Weight loss has everything to with food and yet nothing to do with food! It really has more to do with adjusting our mindset so that healthy choices FEEL right and FEEL good instead of depriving and punishing ourselves in a battle against the tide. Shifting our attitude around weight is about getting better results for yourself. In research it has been shown that the more dissatisfied we are with our bodies, the more likely we are to avoid exercise and positive food choices. Also, a mind programmed purely to the fact that we are overweight predicts future weight gain, according to research
published in the International Journal of Obesity. The integration of mind, body, and spirit is powerful. Optimal wellness allows us to achieve our goals and find meaning and purpose in our lives with the ability to live life to the fullest and to maximise personal potential. The Romsey Festival announces new dates Following their first ever online meeting the Romsey Festival Committee are pleased to announce dates for a Festival in 2021 to replace the event cancelled this year. Romsey Festival 2021 will launch at the Town Hall on Friday 2nd July and run through to Sunday 18th July 2021. All participants signed up for this year and who have responded, have supported the rescheduled dates, priority will be given to fitting those performances and events into the programme. The Committee expect to have at least two evening opportunities for larger concerts or performances. Not only does the Festival give our community an opportunity to enjoy some great performances, many individual events offer an opportunity for funds to be raised for local charities and generate revenue for venues, an important motivator for Festival organisers given the huge loss of revenue these charities and venues have seen in 2020, because of the Coronavirus lockdown. Rescheduling has resulted in some extra costs that must be covered, the Committee is grateful to its local authority and business sponsors who have all agreed that sponsorship funds can be carried forward. Romsey Festival is always keen to discuss additional sponsor
opportunities with local businesses Romsey Festival Chair, Liz Wagner, said “I am absolutely delighted that the 2020 Romsey Festival participants are really enthusiastic about holding a Festival in 2021. We intend that next year’s Festival will be a great celebration of the many and varied talents of our local community and it will be a real boost to participants and audiences alike. I also hope that it will be something for everyone to look forward to and help make the current situation be a distant memory.” Romsey Town Centre Manager, Mark Edgerley, said “This is really good news for Romsey we have to be hopeful that summer 2021 will see Coronavirus a controlled yet terrible memory for us all.
