QUIRKY BY MICA BALE
From its naval history to its stories from the Doomsdays era, Hampshire has always been a county with a rich treasure trove of heritage. As Britain and indeed Hampshire emerges from yet another chapter in its historic past, here is another handful of quirky facts deep from Hampshire’s fascina ng vaults. There was hardly a village, town or community that was not touched by the English Civil war and certainly many of the great estates were forced into ac on. One such great manor house was Basing House which was a Cavalier stronghold. The eventual victory for Thomas Cromwell came a�er a long series of sieges and among those under siege at the me and taking refuge at the Hampshire estate was the renowned Inigo Jones whose very clothes were taken from him upon capture. Basing House, which according to reports was similar in stature and importance to Hampton Court, was ransacked and set alight. Today, the house no longer exists as through the years all remaining stones were removed. Following the Ba le of Trafalgar, many of the ships that had loyally served under Nelson were either repurposed or even destroyed. Thankfully HMS Victory, Nelson’s own ship did not have such a fate and remains to this day as the oldest warship s ll in commission. However both HMS Victory and the Leviathan, another grand ship that had played its part in the war, took rather humbler posi ons as prison ships moored at Portsmouth throughout the late 1810s.
Prison ships were typically used to house prisoners who were to be transported to Australia and America for their crimes. Although the Leviathan sadly no longer exists, HMS Victory is very much s ll a living part of history and remains to this day in its home at Portsmouth.

The Tunworth is a county favourite but has also drawn widespread delight from some of the largest culinary names in Britain. Nigel Slater himself once commented that the “My favourite mel ng cheese is a ripe Tunworth” and Raymond Blanc also echoed similar sen ments when he commented that it is “The best Camembert in the world!”

In 1689, New Alresford suffered near devasta on when a group of sixty-seven Irishmen and six Irishwomen came to the small se lement, claiming they were Protestants who had been cruelly treated and thrust out of their homes. In reality, they had come to a ack the small Hampshire se lement among other sites throughout England. The women carried fireballs which destroyed the market house, council house and church causing severe destruc on.

Praise For Groups As Recovery Phase Begins The leader of Test Valley Borough Council has praised the efforts of community groups as the borough begins to enter the early phases of the recovery stage in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. A number of local groups set up across Test Valley have helped thousands of people get access to medication, food or just a friendly person to talk to if they felt isolated or vulnerable. Together with its community partner, Unity, the council has offered its help and financial backing to the groups to help them serve their local communities. The Test Valley Community Hotline has also been set up to offer a route for support and has been widely utilised. Now, as these groups begin to help the community look ahead and enter into the recovery phase, councillor Phil North has praised how the local organisations have risen to the challenge presented by the pandemic. Leader, councillor North, said: “The imApact these groups have had in our borough has been amazing and I am extremely grateful to every single person who stood up to be counted. This was, and still is, a completely unknown situation and these groups have made an immense difference to our communities. “To everyone who has taken part, I say thank you. We, as a council, have sought to support where possible, either
with our financial help or by deploying our staff out and about with food parcels, and the Test Valley Community Hotline.” With the number of calls having significantly dropped on Sundays over the last few weeks, the hotline will now be run Monday to Saturday and operate six days a week. However, staff will remain available on Sundays for emergencies and can be accessed via Hampshire’s county-wide hotline on 0333 370 4000. Unity chief executive, Terry Bishop, said: “The Test Valley Community Helpline was a reactive response to the needs of isolated people at the start of the pandemic. In partnership with TVBC, groups across the borough and hundreds of volunteers, a groundswell of support for people has been possible and we are justly proud. To know that thousands of people have been assisted in this way, is what 'voluntary action' is all about and Test Valley as a whole has been exceptional. “We would like to express our thanks to everyone and in particular, the volunteers. We hope that they will talk to our Unity Volunteer Hub to continue to offer their time in the future.” The Test Valley Community Hotline can be reached, 9am until 5pm, Monday to Saturday, via 0330 400 4116.

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens To Welcome Visitors Back Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey is preparing to welcome more visitors back as part of a phased re-opening. Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Keith Mans said: “Visitors with annual membership to Sir Harold Hillier Gardens have been enjoying the beautiful, tranquil surroundings on site, thanks to the thorough preparations made by staff to ensure the venue could safely reopen. I was delighted to hear how well the first phase of re-opening went last week, and it was great to see them back. This means we will soon be able to welcome back more visitors, now including those without membership.” The Gardens were temporarily closed to the public at the end of March following Government guidance on essential travel during the Coronavirus outbreak. The first phase of the re-opening saw members welcomed back on 8 June via a pre-booking system to help avoid long queues and faceto-face payment transactions. Phase two will see a limited number of online tickets available to the general public from 22 June as well as the later, daily closing time of 6pm. It will also see take-away refreshments made available to visitors.

A number of measures remain in place to maintain safe social distancing for staff and visitors. This includes reduced accessible parking, and, while some toilets will be open, the visitor pavilion, café, restaurant, gift shop, exhibition gallery and play areas remain closed until further notice. However, takeaway hot and cold drinks will be available to purchase from the Tilia Tree Café, and the Munch Buggy at the Visitor Pavilion, between 10am and 5pm daily. Prewrapped food items such as sandwiches and salads can also be bought. Customers are encouraged to make card and contactless payments. Councillor Mans added: “While we all continue to follow Government advice to control the virus, the Gardens’ 180 acres of world-renowned, trees, shrubs and hardy plants, offer people of all ages the perfect space in which to walk, explore and enjoy some fresh air and exercise. Due to Covid 19 Walk the Test Way cannot take place this year. This is a major blow to many charities who use the walk platform for their major fundraising. Last year over £60,000 was raised by over 100 charities. To ensure that charities do not miss out the organiser, Rotary Club of Romsey Test, have modified the event To Walk the Test another Way. The idea is that individuals sign up and set their own personal step or walk challenge which they can be sponsored for. This might be a short or long distance but a personal challenge for the participant. The challenge can also take place in any location.
Anyone who sponsors Stewart will be offered a run on the tram when normal conditions return. The response had been international with celebrity chef Rick Stein (isolated in Sydney) walking around Sydney harbour to raise funds for the homeless in Cornwall. Locally Rotarian Stewart Mitchell, who has a tramline in his garden, has signed up to raise funds for ‘Youth in Romsey’ by driving his tram all the way from his house to the Youth in Romsey’s headquarters (1.6 miles). This of course means many circuits around his garden!

Stars in the grass Exotic and striking in appearance, orchids can be found in a diverse range of habitats – between now and September is the perfect time to see them in full colour. Early purple orchid As its name suggests, the early purple orchid is one of the first of our native orchids to bloom, strong enough to grow in the light shade of woodland or out in the open grassland of a road verge. Even when not in flower, it is identifiable by its glossy green leaves with dark purple blotches. It remains relatively common but has declined in recent decades due to urban development and modern farming methods. When the flowers first open they have a sweet scent like honey, but once pollinated the flowers smell like the urine of a tomcat! It is thought this may be to warn insects that the flower is no longer worth pollinating. Green-winged orchid Similar in appearance to the early purple orchid, the green-winged orchid can be distinguished by its narrow, unspotted leaves and the distinctive veined hoods that sit above its flower, which give it its name. Until the advent of modern farming this orchid was one of the most widespread and common grassland species. Intolerant of artificial fertilisers and herbicides, it has disappeared from half of its historical range and is now mostly confined to nature reserves. Pyramidal orchid The pyramidal orchid is the county flower of the Isle of Wight. This orchid is easy to identify from the bright pink, pyramid-shaped cluster of flowers on top of the stem. Botanists did not appreciate the close relationship between pyramidal and green-winged orchids until scientists unravelled the plants’ DNA. The

association is surprising as there is very little in common about the appearance of their flowers. The pyramidal orchid, which flowers between June and August, sports a long spur containing nectar to entice moths to drink. Bee orchid The bee orchid is a master of mimicry and has evolved to look like its main pollinator – the longhorn bee. Bizarrely, this bee is rarely found in the UK so the bee orchids found here appear to be self-pollinated – the plant’s male pollen sacs drop onto the female stigma allowing self-pollination to take place. Its windborne seeds germinate freely allowing rapid colonisation of small patches of bare ground. This ability means that short-lived populations turn up in unlikely places such as on the edge of car parks. The bee orchid is, however, at its best in parched sunny habitats and can be abundant where the ground has been disturbed. When admiring orchids, please remember the immature plants that may surround the flowering spike. Avoid trampling future flowers by keeping to the paths and thoroughly checking where you put your feet.. Abi Webber

Care home well placed to offer immediate care The recent challenges around the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted to many families, the vulnerability and high care needs of their elderly relatives.
