Edition of your local Romsey & Wellow Gazette Community Magazine! Dear Residents, From where I stand today, it looks like the restrictions are being lifted. Many are delighted with this, and many are a little trepidatious. It is down to our personal integrity and doing not only what is right for ourselves, but others around us too. Despite the setbacks and worries, which have been huge, there is a sense of community and helping each other, that I believe is stronger today. Let’s move forward with purpose and a sense of hope, to make this go right and turn what we can to a positive future. Almost 600 people sign up to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance’s Dash in the Dark

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance’s (HIOWAA) night-time 5K fun run, Dash in the Dark, has sold almost 600 tickets with the remaining places selling fast. On Saturday September 11 on Southampton Common, participants of all abilities and ages are being urged to don their neon paint and complete the night-time course to help keep its doctors and paramedics ﬂying and saving lives.

Councillor’s Column At the time of writing, the Prime Minister has just announced that the vast majority of Covid restrictions will come to an in July. Whilst this is great news, I think it’s important to reiterate that Covid hasn’t gone away and that the Delta variant is still pushing up case rates. The difference between now and the turn of the year though is the strength of our vaccination programme. Eighty-eight percent of Test Valley residents have now received their first jab and twothirds are fully vaccinated. Public Health England data shows that vaccinations are 96% effective at stopping hospitalisations and they are also preventing deaths. In the three-month period from the 1st January to the 31st March 2021, there were 85 deaths from Covid in Test Valley within 28-days of a positive test. From the 1st April to the time of writing (in mid-July) there has only been 1. Although for numerous reasons our lives are going to continue to be very different from what they were 18-months ago, I hope this will give people the confidence to get back to somewhere near normality. Personally, I can’t wait to get back to parkrun on a Saturday morning, socialise with wider friendship groups and visit the numerous public events that are usually the staple of a Test Valley 14

summer. I got an early taste of that at the Wallop Wheels & Wings event at the Museum of Army Flying recently. It was fabulous to see so many people enjoying themselves again, including many visitors to Test Valley. A great advert for our beautiful borough. Finally, back in June, I spent some time on the Test Valley Borough Council stand at the Andover Vision Climate Day of Action. Put on to promote the small changes we can all make to help tackle climate change and look after our environment. Test Valley were talking all things recycling as well as promoting our hugely successful Community Litter Picking Scheme. Whilst our main message is not to drop litter in the first place, if you love were you live and want to help our dedicated Environmental Services team tidy up Test Valley, you can sign up via our website. Hidden Away - Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust The summer brings with it a profusion of wildlife in many of the wilder areas of the countryside. From blooming wildflowers to the sounds of birdsong, there is so much going on. But many of our mammalian friends are out of sight out of mind, especially in the summer as they hide away in the dense vegetation. This week, we take a look at what some of our furry friends are up to at this time of year. Feeding up Hazel dormice might be most familiar as an autumnal species, getting ready to bed down for winter. They wake in spring, and from then on, it’s a race to pile on the pounds for the colder months. During summer, they are at their most active, clambering around hedges and trees, looking for their favourite food. Already cute, one of the biggest components of their summer diet is flowers. Honeysuckle and bramble flowers make up a significant proportion of their diet before they turn to nuts in the autumn.

(meaning they come out at dusk, in twilight). The long summer evenings mean a much better chance of spotting this species compared to the winter. Badgers are no exception. Their cubs will be around four months old now and making the most of this time to play. By July, most will be weaned and starting to become independent. The cubs will roll around with each other, play ﬁghting and chasing their siblings around the sett. Small mammals, like mice and voles, are essential food sources for wildlife higher up the food chain. Healthy habitats contain plenty of food for species low down in the food chain. Increases in their populations lead to increases in predators like large mammals and birds of prey. Creating interlinked corridors for mammals to breed and hunt in is vital and restoring and conserving these habitats is at the heart of the Trust’s work.

Up in the air Bats are giving birth at this time of year, usually to a single pup which the mothers nurse in a maternity roost. The young bats take about four weeks before they start to learn to ﬂy, growing quickly in that time. Some will still be suckling from mum until August. To help keep a steady supply of milk for their young, the adult bats must eat thousands of tiny insects every night! QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Isn’t August the perfect time of year to enjoy Hampshire in all its glory? Long days and hopefully nice weather throughout the month, what could be better than delving into the county’s most interesting facts in celebration of the last of the summer in our own county? From an interesting royal connection to Winchester’s watermill to an American showman, here’s another handful of quirky facts from around Hampshire!

Did you know that the British Deer Society was founded in 1963 and is based in Fordingbridge? The society was formed after it became apparent following the Second World War that deer populations were considerably larger than had been estimated. Originally known as the Deer Group within the much larger Mammal Society, the aim was to maintain safe numbers and strong herds and even today, decades later, the society works hard to educate and ensure a safe future for Britain's deer herds.

Perhaps unsurprisingly it was in Hampshire that the first powered flight took place. Lasting only a few seconds, the man behind the machine was American showman and cowboy who claimed to be the long lost son of Buffalo Bill, Samuel Franklin Cody. Although the alleged connection was not true, it is certainly true that Samuel Cody beheld his namesake’s talent for showbusiness and it was with the flamboyance of a showman that he took to the skies above Farnborough Common in 1903. Cody went on to contribute greatly to aviation in Britain however tragically, just a few years later, Cody flew once again at the common, only to suffer a crash that made him one of the first people to die in an aviation disaster.

Hampshire’s census records always provide a fascinating insight into the county’s history. However, did you know that some of the most common names by population in 1881 included the less than usual surnames of Tier, Urry and Tolfree which amazingly had origins meaning ‘someone who saddled horses for women?

Interestingly the watermill is still in working order after restoration work and is one of the oldest watermills that is still in working order. Aside from providing fine quality flour for generations of Winchester locals, it’s iconic history has attracted many great historical figures from JMW Turner to Mary Tudor who gifted the mill to the city in return for having her wedding to Philip II of Spain at the city’s cathedral. Remarkably the charming village of Fritham had an unusual claim to fame from the 1860s to the 1920s when it became the headquarters of the Schultze factory. Interestingly the factory was renowned for its development for a smokeless powder used by many estates throughout the country for sporting purposes. Amazingly the small Hampshire village would become the centre of the largest nitro-compound gunpowder factory and in later times a whopping three quarters of the world’s annual gunpowder consumption for sport all hailed from Fritham!

Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. The building’s picturesque positioning allows it to stand mighty proud over the town centre, dominating the local skyline with its towering height visible even on a clear day from Fishlake Meadows. Its strong bold appearance commands eyes up close and afar thanks to the instantly recognisable stone architecture and distinctive decorations. Passing by you’ll often see people gazing at the tall arches and rounded stained glass windows,

Though to fully appreciate its significance and relationship to Romsey, you have to first understand its deep history. At over 900 years old, the Norman Abbey has survived The Black Death, Reformation, Henry VIII and the Dissolution of Monasteries, as well as Cromwell and the English Civil war (you can still see the scars from when Parliamentary troops fired musket balls during their attempt to desecrate the people’s place of worship). Quite a remarkable track record of avoiding destruction during the turbulent periods of England’s history. A true testament to the original craftsmen and centuries of preservation. The UK alone sees on average 300,000 tonnes of textiles sent to landfill every year, and with more than 60% of fabric fibres being synthetic you can bet those clothes are going to be hanging around for a very long time. The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Isn’t it great to go for a walk in our luscious green, English countryside! Daichi highly recommends walking to clear away the mental cobwebs and stresses of the week. He loves to bounce his way to the destination, always with a picnic, coffee at the ready and a big stealy white smile. We love him. This time he took us to Pamphill near Wimborne in East Dorset. There are bluebell woods here which can look amazing at the right time of the year. In 2018 the National Trust planted 2500 trees at the Abbott Street Plantation, which you can see on the map. This included oak, hazel, scots pine, sweet chestnut and wild cherry trees. The intention is to extend the ancient woodland for future generations, so they continue to enjoy our wonderful wildlife and views. How cool is that. Some of the trees in the woodland have been standing there for 300 years (and I feel old…) and are struggling with disease and stress, so there was a fence to keep us heavy humans out and allow the trees some space, peace and quiet to recover. Maybe there is a lesson to learn there… certainly

Ancient woodland at Abbott Street Copse taking a walk can help us too, recover from a taxing week. In addition to that some of the dead trees, known as “standing deadwood” have been deliberately left where they have stood for hundreds of years. These old, decayed trees, which still have a wonderful presence about them, are great for wildlife and create a haven for woodpeckers, insects, tree creepers and a large variety of fungi. They make it a heathy habitat for other species to thrive. I love nature and there is definitely something very magical about this woodland. I take my hat off (or Daichi’s bonnet) to the National Trust who are preserving this delightful area. We really enjoyed our meanderings. Once out of the sheltered wood, we walked to more open ground, across fields and climbed over stiles to follow the walk we had found on our phone. Modern technology working with ancient woodlands and a beautiful leisurely stroll. The walk is about an hour long, though we were walking pretty slowly really, so for those who like more of a hike you could probably do this in half an

hour! We like to amble, take our time and breathe in the fresh air. We saw buzzards, deer, horses and walkers with dogs. The view further on the trail is amazing. Rolling hills and farmhouses. One thatched cottage in the distance had had a fire and was burnt to a cinder, all black and eerie looking. I do not know the story there, but I certainly hope everyone was safe. Back at the Pamphill Green car park we decided to visit St Stephen’s Church, which is the Bankes Family Church. The Bankes family owned Kingston Lacy Country House and this Church was built in memory of Walter Ralph Bankes who was a Lord High Admiral of Purbeck. I immediately noticed there were no gravestones. Call me odd, but as a teenager and later at university I used to walk around Churches and Graveyards to read the tombstones. I found it fascinating to see who was alive in the area then, how long they had lived and see family members all together. Pure enchantment. To others I was seen as a little ‘mad’ I think! Well, it is a good job we are all different I say. So, immediately seeing there were no gravestones to read, I looked it up on good old Google and found that land has to be consecrated in order to have a burial ground. Holy water, which has been blessed by a priest is used to make the land sacred and only then can

Daichi waited in the woods the land be used for burials. This land was obviously not consecrated and thus no tombstones to read. Churches do have a certain atmosphere about them, especially chocolate-box looking ones like this one. Idyllic. This Church was built in 1907 after seven years of construction. The previous Church had been left to go to ruins and unlike the dead trees in the woods, a broken-down, dilapidated Church does not aid others in their survival, so a new one had to be built. Well, they did a very good job I have to say. All this countryside walking and fresh air meant that refreshments were in order. The Vine Inn Pub is a very short drive down the road and as it was a lovely evening, we decided to sit in the garden there and have a drink. A great end to a very simple, relaxed afternoon. After all the chasing around of the week it was delightful to sit and listen to birds singing, taste the fresh night air and chill out. Daichi watched us with an equally lazy smile. Wherever you live there is countryside not that far away. If you are able to get out and about, all you need is walking shoes and a jacket just in case. Take your time, take a stroll and let nature calm the spirits. Truly recommended. Where will Daichi take us next I wonder? By Debbie Corney

Romsey Walk Start here

I started at the Palmerston Statue in Romsey, It’s so lovely to meet a friend and walk first and then choose somewhere for lunch, or coffee after your walk. From the Palmerston walk down Bell Street, continue until you reach the Cromwell Arms, this bit is very busy so please be careful. Cross over and continue until you reach the footpath sign … this is part of the Test Way Walk. Just at this bit it can be muddy if it’s been raining. Go through the gate and look at the wonderful views … you can leave all the noise behind you. Part way up the grass track, if you look left you will see the back of Broadlands House, quite spectacular! A little further on is a gravel path, go straight up. Either side of the walk you will see gates with cows in the fields. A little further up is a fork in the path, you need to turn right and go through the turn style. If you have a dog, you will need to put it on a lead, there are a few signs along the way to remind you. Also it’s a bit bumpy under foot. I have done this walk in trainers and walking boots. I thoroughly recommend walking boots. Also there are intermittent signs on posts to guide you. A little further up, when you come to the footpath sign, turn right. We are so lucky to have the beautiful Test Way to walk … Last year when I walked this route, it was very flat and very dry but this year is a bit slippery as we’ve had so much rain. Eventually, you will reach the corn fields. As the season goes on I thoroughly recommend long trousers and long sleeves as you will get stung by nettles and bitten by bugs… It is so pretty though, definitely worth it! At the end of the field, go through the gate and onto the road, this is called Moorcourt Farm. Bear left

down the road for a short while then turn left… There are signs to say you are being watched. Go through the gate and carry on walking, it’s as if you are walking through someone’s private garden. Carry straight on past the amazing barns … they are so pretty! At the edge of the barns turn right at the metal gate. Well, this bit of the walk is so peaceful and pretty, absolutely stunning! Carry on until you reach the River Test and just watch the water… it’s totally mesmerising. Carry on and follow the road round. Please don’t be tempted to go off road as this is Broadlands Private Estate and you will be asked to go back on the road. Carry on until you reach the little fishing hut, this is definitely my favourite part of the walk, the view is absolutely stunning. I always stop for a while and just enjoy the tranquillity. Both sides of the bridge are so pretty … follow the road round until you reach the gate and the large house. Another part of this walk I absolutely love is the amazing barns you come to, WOW they are spectacular! Carry on up to the top of this road and if you turn right this takes you to the Broadlands Lakes and if you turn left, this takes you onto the private Broadlands Estate, so at this point I turn round and go back. Although you go back the same way, it’s such a lovely walk, I don’t mind. This walk takes about 2½-3 hours and is about 6½ miles, but if you take a drink and a sandwich, there are a lot of places to stop and while away your time… I definitely would not do this walk by myself as I have never seen anyone else. I do this walk at least once a month and love it! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Summer Fruits Pie Introduction

Make the most of summers berries with this delectable pie… perfect with a dollop of fresh cream!

Ingredients

(serves four)

For the pastry: 225g cold unsalted butter chopped into small pieces 350g plain flour 50g icing sugar Pinch of salt 1 large egg yolk For the filling: 800g of berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries or blueberries 100g sugar 2tbsp of cornflour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 egg white (for glazing) 1tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

1. Put the ﬂour, butter, icing sugar and salt in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Combine the yolk with 1tbsp cold water, then add to the processor and pulse until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two, wrap in clingﬁlm and chill in the fridge for at least one hour or, better still, overnight. 2. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Roll out one half of the pastry, then butter an 8” pie dish and press in the pastry topped with a sheet of baking paper and baking beans. Bake blind for 30 mins. Remove the paper and beans. Mix the berries, sugar and pour

the mixture into your baked pie base. 3. Roll out the second batch of pastry and top the pie with it, trimming to ﬁt, and using a fork to seal the edge. Use a sharp knife to create a few slits for steam to escape before brushing with the whisked egg white before topping with sugar. Bake for 30-35 minutes until crust is golden. Leave to cool as ﬁlling will be extremely hot!

• If you’re time-starved, feel free to use pre-made shortcrust pastry which is generally as good as homemade, and certainly easier! • If you don’t have baking beans use cooking weights, dried lentils or rice. • If you don’t have access to a food processor simply rub the butter and ﬂour together until it is the texture of breadcrumbs.
