This month, while you are busy penning your Christmas wishes to friends and family, you are also taking part in one of humankind’s greatest achievements: communication through the art of writing. Writing has only been in existence for around five thousand years. It was invented a long time after spoken language, which developed tens of thousands of years ago. What is astonishing is that all written languages, although very different in appearance, can be traced back to common origins and a lightbulb moment in writing’s development known as the Rebus Principle. The earliest forms of written communication were made using illustrations, which can be seen in the oldest cave paintings. Early pictographs were also used as accounts, such as listing belongings that were to be traded or sacrificed, for example, a sheaf of wheat or a cow. However, people quickly found that pictograms alone were not always enough to convey complex ideas, so they were adapted to not only represent what they were, but to additionally stand for spoken sounds that were not necessarily related to the pictures themselves. This was the Rebus Principle – rebus meaning ‘by things’ in Latin. It meant that people’s names could be written down, as well as their possessions and transactions. As an example, ‘sun’ and ‘son’ have different meanings but are the same sound, so could be represented by the same symbol.
The Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans made their own versions of this alphabet and it was spread across the Mediterranean by travelling merchants. Today, we use the Greek alphabet, but the origins of our letters can still be traced back to those original pictographs. The letter ‘a’ or ‘A’, for example, was originally an ox’s head or aleph and was therefore given the sound a. The Greeks subsequently called this first letter alpha. Because of differences between cultures in reading left to right or right to left, letters were turned and adapted. If you flip our capital letter A upside down, it still looks like an ox head. As with spoken language, written language has evolved over time. Punctuation and the differentiation between capital and lower-case letters were a necessary evolution of reading long texts in order to clarify meaning. A comma can make a world of difference! With the invention of printing, punctuation was standardised. The invention of writing has not only given us a means to post our good wishes at Christmas. It has also given us the gift of great literature and in our modern world has enabled global communication.
The earliest form of writing using symbols – or phonograms – to represent sounds is known as ‘cuneiform’. It was invented in ancient southern Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) by the Sumerians in order to facilitate trade. Cuneiform used a system of triangular marks made with a reed that were impressed on wet clay tablets. Alphabets we use today have their origins in the Semitic language. Many of the Semites worked as labourers in Ancient Egypt and adapted hieroglyphs to represent twenty-four different sounds, producing their own written letters.

It turns out to be a dragon fruit tree and the fruit is about to hatch. Before long, Tomas is learning all about his new pet, from the fact it loves broccoli to the unfortunate fact that dragon poo is highly explosive. Flavour – Yotam Ottolenghi and Ixta Belfrage If you’re buying for someone who loves nothing more than spending a couple of hours in the kitchen cooking up a storm, this is the gift for them. It is not, however, a cookery book for beginners or those wanting to whip up a quick and easy dish. The ingredients aren’t always easy to come by and most of the recipes are experimental to say the least. The dishes are not always vegetarian, but fruit, vegetables or fungi are the star ingredients, and often used in rather surprising ways. Lime and Coconut Potato Gratin anyone? My Garden World – Monty Don Wildlife fans will adore My Garden World, which is basically Monty Don’s personal homage to the birds, insects and other creatures that share his garden. The book is packed with interesting nuggets of information about British wildlife and is a real pleasure to read (particularly when sat in the garden with a cuppa). If you want to really earn some brownie points, team it with a few packets of wildflower seeds and a pair of binoculars.

Verwood iOPS - FREE Help for the Over 60’s Do you remember POPP – the Dorset Partnership for Older People Programme? It helped tens of thousands of older people across Dorset including more than 600 residents of Verwood and the surrounding villages. The programme closed in 2019 when funding was ended but one member of the POPP team, Alan Pearce, vowed to keep its work alive – at least in Verwood. He set up a new charity called iOPS, the Information for Older People Service, which does exactly what POPP used to do – help older people by giving them information.

The charity works by putting clients in touch with organisations and individual experts who can benefit them with guidance on, for example, home safety and security, benefits and allowances, tax help, pensions, advocacy for those who need it, bereavement counselling, care support for themselves and for relatives, respite care, trusted tradesmen, local transport, little jobs around the house and so on. And perhaps the biggest one of all – making contacts and finding friends, with places to go and things to do to keep up your spirits. Did you know, for example, that there are over 90 clubs and organised activities for the over-50’s in Verwood and Three Legged Cross? Alan does - he has a list - and he can put people in touch with them at very short notice. Covid, of course, has cut home visits, but telephone conversation help is always available and can usually solve most problems. The service is impartial, confidential and absolutely free! But donations to help it keep going are

iOPS is a very small and very simple charity: it’s a sort of “One stop information shop” - one ‘phone call does it all. Funding to keep going is now difficult, though, as a result of Covid restrictions, but Alan is determined to. “The people of Verwood deserve it.” he says. “When Covid does ease, we’ll be having our weekly slot in the library again, and I’ll be out and about with my information leaflets, talking to people and listening!”

Vocalize Choir leaps to number two in the iTunes Christmas chart beating Coldplay and Michael Buble Verwood-based choir ‘Vocalize’ has battled through the challenges of this pandemic to record a Christmas song and accompanying video to raise much needed funds for Shelter The fundraising effort has also been galloping forward reaching its target of £1,000 in just ten days. The choir have now doubled the target and are already racing towards that.. The choir members were amazed to wake up this morning to see the exciting download news. The catchy seasonal tune ‘Be here this Christmas’ had leapt from number 70 in the itunes Christmas download chart to number two.

he population of visiting birds at Blashford continues to increase with the colder weather and onset of winter. Soon duck numbers will peak and the lakes will swarm with waterfowl feeding on the surface and the shoreline. As we go to print, the bird hides at Blashford Lakes remain closed but panoramic views of Ibsley Water can be had from the viewing platform which is accessible on foot through the closed main car park. This is the prefect spot to watch the starlings put on a show as they twist, turn, swoop and swirl across the sky in mesmerising shape-shifting clouds. These fantastic murmurations occur just before dusk as numerous small groups from the same area flock together above a communal roosting site. The valley boasts a sizeable starling murmuration most years, with the reedbeds to the north of Ibsley Water often used, along with those to the west and the smaller reedbed by Lapwing Hide in the east, so from this

higher vantage point all possible roost sites can be seen. Almost all of Ivy Lake can be viewed via a combination of the screens on the footpath running between Ivy Lake and Rockford Lake and the newly opened screened view adjacent to Ivy North Hide. As you walk the paths to and from the lakeside screens, listen out for the wigeon’s distinctive whistle which carries well across the lake. The wigeon is a dabbling duck which feeds on aquatic plants and can also be seen out of the water grazing the grass on the banks. The car park by the Education Centre remains open and although the Centre is closed, two portable toilets are available in front of the building for visitors to use. On the feeder by the Welcome Hut you may see a variety of woodland birds including great spotted woodpecker, marsh tit, nuthatch, goldfinch, greenfinch, coal tit, blue tit and great tit alongside our winter visitors, the
siskin, brambling and redpoll. As we move into the New Year the first flowers will start to appear. Patches of snowdrops will begin to emerge along the verges and if the weather has been mild primroses may also flower. Amongst the deadwood and wet ground the scarlet elf cup fungi, one of the first in the year, begins to grow, painting vivid spots of colour into the woodland habitat. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. Understanding Investments: Sustainable Investing
With Christmas approaching and having endured such a challenging year on many fronts due to the worldwide pandemic, I am sure many people will reflect on 2020 and hope 2021 will be better. As these articles are themed around “understanding investments”, it felt appropriate at this time of the year to highlight an area of investing which should benefit the environment and society overall. What is sustainable Investing? Given the global challenges the world faces, including poverty, healthcare, inequalities and climate change, businesses are coming under increasing pressure to review how they operate and become more sustainable. This is a movement which has been gathering awareness and support, and which has undoubtably been accelerated by the events of the last 12 months. In 2015 the United Nations announced the “17 Sustainable Development Goals”, to transform the world for the better. These introduced a 15-year plan for all countries-developed and developing, to end all poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change by 2030. Why invest in a Sustainable way? Governments and businesses often include sustainability criteria in the contracts they award business, so companies which embrace these themes have a competitive advantage which should benefit them in the long term. Certainly, many sustainable funds have out-performed their more mainstream rivals in recent years, a trend which has accelerated in 2020 due to Sustainable funds excluding sectors such as Oil & Gas, Airlines and Industrials and the
higher inclusion of Technology and Healthcare. I remember 10-15 years ago Howard Goodship the opposite was often true of “ethical funds”, which were much more focused on negatively screening companies rather than inclusion for a companies’ positive contribution. Many of the gifts we give or get at Christmas are gadgets, and that means Santa has a few things to think about in the days before the big day. For example, if the kids have asked him for a games console it’s highly likely that the console will need to download a big software update before it can play online; the worst possible time to do that download is on Christmas morning when everybody else in your street is trying to do the same. If you can, connect any new console to the internet in advance so there’s no delay before the kids can play. Another good idea is to prepare a bit of paper with your Wi-Fi details and password on it: from Amazon Echo speakers to Apple iPads and even many kids’ toys, a Wi-Fi connection is needed for them to work. Digging out the details in advance will speed things up considerably on the day. It’s worth looking out any USB-ready charger plugs (such as from iPhones or Kindle Fire tablets), because to help reduce electronic waste many USBpowered devices will come with a cable but not the plug it connects to. And of course, it’s a very good idea to check what batteries any gadgets, toys or remote controllers are going to need. If you don’t already have one, a battery charger with a couple of sets of AA and AAA rechargeable batteries will come in very handy in the next few days. Last but not least, we’d recommend having a multi-tool or a screwdriver set and some really good scissors handy. We’ve found that many kids’ toys come screwed to the packaging or require very small crosshead screwdrivers to open their battery compartments, and others come in extremely strong clear plastic that’s very hard to open.

From an interesting event in the height of the English Civil War to a special treat for King George III, Dorset has had many interesting chapters in its long history. This winter might well prove to be just another page in the journal of time but here are five more interesting facts from around Dorset to celebrate the county’s interesting past and even more interesting future. Did you know that in the old Dorset dialect, there are at least eight words for mealtimes? Ranging from the more recognisable ‘luncheon’ to the slightly less identifiable ‘nammet’ or perhaps the ‘nuncheon’, the Dorset dialect is a vital part of the county’s heritage and certainly offers an interesting mealtime conversation!
Did you know that in 1645 the English Civil War touched the lives of the village of Child Okehampton in a very unusual way. An independent unit of around two thousand men decided to attack both the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. Known as the ‘Clubmen’, their endeavour was actually to prevent further conflict between the warring parties. Their skirmishes resulted in Cromwell imprisoning at least three hundred of them however it could almost be said that there was a touch of amusement when he was later quoted as describing them as ‘poor, silly creatures”.
Of course Dorset is known for its delightful dishes however, rumour has it that George III himself was responsible for the creation of the Royal Portland Pudding! Reportedly, the king, during his frequent visits to Dorset, would especially ask for the rich fruit pudding. It was reported in a local publication of the day, that: “George III, during his visits to Weymouth, had several times made a tour of the Isle of Portland; and on those occasions he made the ‘Portland Arms’ his headquarters, and used to finish his day by dining at the house. The then landlady had a recipe for making a certain famous Portland pudding, and the King never failed to order this pudding, in honour of the island”. Although not unique, Dorset can boast some of the finest examples of where natural history meets humans. The holloways in the county have been created by thousands if not millions of Dorset locals having traipsed through the beautiful countryside and thus created delightful sunken pathways similar to tunnels, exposing tree roots and millenia of Dorset’s Jurassic geology. Perfect for a winter walk!

Although it might be a little difficult to go abroad for some winter sports, restrictions allowing, Dorset still has some great local activities including a range of different ski slopes and winter activities to enjoy. Perhaps even a game of socially distanced snow ball fights is the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy Dorset in its wintry wonderfulness!

The quintessentially English country garden has classic, timeless appeal, and although easier to achieve in the countryside can still be recreated at least in part in town. Shrubs make a great backdrop so choose a range of different shapes, textures and shades of leaf colour for that cottage garden feel. For best effect choose mainly or all deciduous shrubs with just a few evergreens. A wooden or metal gate painted white gives the right feel, and when smart, traditional-look fixings and fixtures are painted contrasting black, the look is complete. In a country-style garden the combination of a wide range of types of flower in an even wider range of colours is perfect. Contrasting colours look great as long as there is plenty of greenery in-between. Plant loosely and almost randomly in drifts, with no straight lines anywhere, to give beds and borders a country style, whatever their size. Allow plants to grow closer together so there is no bare earth, and when planting a bed from scratch use hardy annuals to fill in any gaps while the main plants grow, to create a wall-towall carpet of colour. Plants in pots add seasonal splashes of colour, so include temporary plants such as brightly coloured pelargoniums and geraniums or longerterm plants such as bulbs and small shrubs. Choose a pot with an informal, rounded shape, rather than anything too geometric or modern; a terracotta pot works a treat. Have a range of heights in the flower borders, basically with smaller plants in front and the largest at the back, but add in tall, slim plants throughout
to add colour, interest and height variation without blocking your view of their smaller neighbours. The classic choice for this is the purple-flowered Verbena bonariensis. A wall made from brick or stone make a perfect boundary. A drystone wall with variations in the grey and brownish colours of the stone looks great in all weathers, and you can grow plants such as house leeks in some of the crevices. If your garden needs steps, choose stone. It is long-lasting, withstands hard frosts and needs no preservative treatments. Combined with a wall of the same material, steps like this almost look natural, particularly when laid slightly unevenly. Ivy is perfect for covering up unattractive features such as an ugly wall. It grows rapidly and is a useful wildlife habitat, but don’t allow it to grow out of control. Maximise planting opportunities with containers made from natural materials such as terracotta. Positioned on top of a wall they’ll mark the boundary well and bring seasonal colour. Swap the plants around at summer’s end and use winterflowering pansies for colour throughout the year. Plant small, compact plants along the edges of paths and steps to add colour and interest. Small saxifrages look great but won’t swamp the steps either! Perfect for a festive sweet treat or a lovely edible Christmas gift these spiced star cookies can be kept in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
Makes 20 Ready in 1 hour, plus chilling and cooling INGREDIENTS • 2 medium egg whites • 175g icing sugar • 250g finely ground roasted hazelnuts • 50g mixed peel, finely chopped • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon TIP Dust the cookie cutter with icing sugar frequently to prevent the mixture sticking.
1. Using an electric handheld mixer, whisk the egg whites in a clean, grease-free bowl until holding stiff peaks. Stir in the icing sugar until thoroughly combined then continue to whisk until thick and glossy. 2. Remove 40g of this mixture and set aside. Fold the hazelnuts, mixed peel and cinnamon into the remaining mixture to make a very stiff dough. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour. 3. Preheat the oven to 140C, 120C fan, gas mark 1. Line 2 baking sheets with baking paper. Roll the dough out on a surface heavily dusted with icing sugar to a 1cm thickness. 4. Using a 5cm star-shaped cookie cutter stamp out about 20 stars, re-rolling the dough as needed until it is all used up. Place the stars on the baking sheet, well-spaced apart. Spread a little of the reserved egg white and icing sugar mixture on top of each star. 5. Bake for 25 minutes or until the cookies are still white and crisp on top but slightly soft underneath. Turn off the oven, open the oven door and leave the cookies to dry out for 15 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

36 Natalie poked her head around the kitchen door. “I thought I heard a crash.” Colin and Maureen looked at each other in panic. “So sorry Natalie, we’ve had a little accident,” Maureen confessed. “Colin’s dropped your Thermos flask.” By Jackie Brewster
Maureen and Colin watched helplessly as the Thermos flask slid from the table. It hit the kitchen floor with a dull crack. “Christmas is ruined,” Colin said glumly. “Christmas isn’t ruined.” Maureen reached for her glass to calm her nerves. “Not when there’s sherry.” “Perhaps it’s saveable.” Colin gingerly picked up the Thermos flask and shook it. It sounded like wet gravel. “Natalie brought it,” he said. Their guests, Colin’s dad, Maureen’s brother Derrick and his fiancée Natalie were patiently waiting in the dining room for their Christmas dinner. It was a family tradition for everyone to bring something for the meal. Colin’s dad had made the Christmas pudding, Derrick had brought crackers. “What did she bring?” Maureen asked quietly. “I’ve no idea,” Colin said, “she just handed me this when she came in.” It was the first time Natalie had joined them for Christmas day, and the pressure to impress was on because she’d once been a guest on a cookery show on the local radio and never missed an opportunity to mention it.
“It was only cheap,” Natalie laughed nervously. “Just so long as the contents are alright.” Colin shook the Thermos. Natalie looked crestfallen. “I could lend you a pair of slippers,” he offered. Maureen nudged him in the ribs. “But my advice would be not to put your shoes in a Thermos in the first place.” Natalie looked puzzled. “Not shoes, it’s jus,” she frowned, “to pour on the meal.” “Do you mean gravy?” Maureen asked, astonished. “I knew there was something missing!” “I suppose some people call it that.” Natalie sounded offended. “We professional chefs call it jus.” “Why didn’t you say?” Maureen laughed, refilling her glass. “Colin, get the jar of granules out of the pantry and I’ll whisk up some more.” “But it was a special jus,” Natalie protested. “What’s the key ingredients?” Colin asked as the kettle boiled. Natalie blushed. “I used gravy granules,” she said quietly, “with a slug of sherry in it.” “Didn’t I tell you Colin?” Maureen picked up the bottle. “Sherry to the rescue again!”
“What did she say when she gave it to you?” Maureen asked impatiently. Colin thought for a moment. “She said it was shoes,” he said finally. “It’s clearly not shoes though is it?” Exasperated, Maureen took another swig of her sherry. “What are we going to do now?” she said. “What did you ask her to bring?” Colin said. “I can’t remember, can I?” Maureen said. “Let’s look at what we’ve got and see what’s missing.” They looked at the steaming dishes of food on the counter – turkey, stuffing, sprouts and roast potatoes. “Can I help with anything?”

We help you to make the most of your festive centrepiece. Some prefer a real Christmas tree while others argue for artificial. We offer some arboreal insights. Which type of real tree? The Norway Spruce is the classic choice but can be spikey and shed needles. The very popular Nordmann Fir has an even shape, soft foliage and glossy, dark green needles that don’t drop much. The Scots Pine retains its needles and has a lovely, fresh smell, while the Fraser Fir has silvery-green foliage and soft, low-shed needles with a citrusy aroma. The Noble Fir features blueish needles with well-spaced foliage while the unusual Lodgepole Pine has bushy, upward-pointing branches and the best needle-retention of all. Cut or container? Freshly cut Christmas trees provide a problem when it comes to disposal, so a great alternative is a tree purpose-grown in a pot. After Christmas the tree can be moved outside until next year. It will grow but can be kept for up to three years. Preparing for your tree-shopping trip Measure the height and width of the space available for your tree and take a tape measure with you. Pack a pair of heavy gloves and an old blanket to catch pine needles that fall off in the boot of your car. If transporting your tree on your car’s roof, take a rope and perhaps a tarpaulin to wrap around the tree. Picking out the best tree Look for a symmetrical tree with evenly distributed branches. Fresh trees will boast shiny, green needles that don’t drop if you gently pull a branch. Avoid trees with dry or brown needles. Buying direct from a local grower is best. What about artificial trees? Modern artificial trees are incredibly realistic, though usually without the natural appearance or smell that real trees offer. An artificial can be used again and again, but consider how easily it can be stored.

Which artificial tree? There is a huge variety of shapes and sizes on offer, and with a choice of PVC needles or PE (polyethylene) needles. Many artificial trees are pre-lit, too and some are ‘frosted’ with a dusting of artificial snow. Caring for your real tree • If you want it to look good right through until Twelfth Night, try to buy your tree as late as possible. • Ask the seller to saw a small slice off the bottom of the trunk (alternatively, do this yourself as soon as you get home). This will help it to absorb water. • Stand the tree in a bucket of water in a cool place until you are ready to position and decorate it. • If possible, place the tree in a cool spot, away from fires or radiators. Even a sunny window can hasten the tree’s decline. Secure it in a correctly sized, sturdy stand and adjust it so it is level. Fill the reservoir with water and check this regularly, topping up as necessary.
