Golden Envlope Donation for Coping with CHAOS A West Moors’ couple, Gillian and Alex Clarke, have donated £50 to Coping with CHAOS, run by Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability charity.

The donation started as a golden envelope donation from the new Bishop of Salisbury, Bishop Stephen Lake, when he was welcomed to Salisbury Cathedral in June. Everyone was given an envelope containing £10 with a total of £10,000 given away, donated by two generous benefactors.

Clare Rochford, Children’s Team manager, commented: “We really appreciate this kind and generous donation, it will mean so much for the children and families we support in our school holiday activities, youth club and family support service.”

The instructions given were to make the £10 grow and to give it away so that ‘in an anxious world, it would make a difference’. Husband and wife, Alex and Gillian Clarke chose to donate £50 to Coping with CHAOS to make a difference to the lives of children and young people in Dorset as a gift from St. Mary’s Church in West Moors.

First Beaver Kit born in Dorset for over 400 years Beavers have bred in Dorset for the first time in over 400 years at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s enclosed beaver site in West Dorset. Trail cameras inside the enclosure have captured images of a young beaver, known as a kit, and its mother, exploring the watery woodland created by its parents since they were released in February 2021. This landmark project for Dorset is hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust working alongside lead partners, University of Exeter and Wessex Water to undertake a scientific study to assess all the impacts that beavers make on the natural environment including river flow, water quality and biodiversity. Since the beavers were introduced to site, they have built dams, creating a wetland to suit their needs but which also provides habitat for many other species, such as frogs and newts which depend on water. Rivers Conservation Officer, Steve Oliver said, “We have been closely monitoring the pair since their release and it has been clear that they have formed a strong bond in the time they have been on site, and this latest discovery is further evidence of this, alongside their industrious dam building activity. The trail cams have only identified one kit so far, but beavers can typically have one to four kits in a litter, and we are discreetly observing their activity to see if any others have been born.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about individuality and belief. I think sometimes people look at architecture as something that’s unattainable by us; it’s something by which we feel the need to call in help, to pursue the talents and experience of someone else in order to get us to where we want to be. Yet the reality is very different. Anyone can start with an idea or a concept; slowly, gradually, carefully acquiring skills so as to be able to turn some of those thoughts and ambitions into reality. And the reward from that is two-fold – naturally you can do something that is based on your own timeframe and your own budget; but more importantly, forevermore you can look at

something that you produced and know it came from within, it came from the heart, and it addressed that incredibly special element that exists in all our lives where we invest emotion and energy into what are, otherwise, inanimate objects. And this is a very human trait that is vital where architecture and, by extension, our homes, are concerned. It’s the fact that to anyone else, the space will ultimately mean something else versus how you interpret it; and to some people it may just mean nothing at all. There may be no tangible connection or emotion that comes from it. Yet when we produce, envisage, imagine and create a path for something that is our own creation and our own production, we add into it an element that is bespoke, that is individual and that, you would hope, will still hold a legacy for who we are and who we were in that very moment we created it, for decades to come.

That’s why I always want to encourage individuality in people who are passionate about putting their own ﬁngerprint on their homes. There are really no bad decisions… providing you obey the basics of construction, that is! So rather than just follow the guidelines and the trends and the fashions of the populous, get out there and ﬁnd your own… and more than that, make that reality yourself, if you can, rather than calling in someone else. That, to me, is the biggest thrill when I look in on the projects others have created. To see their own work is to understand the person, and only by understanding each other can we ever truly move forward.

Talbot Village Trust donates £50,000 to help keep Dorset schoolchildren safe Talbot Village Trust, a local grant giving charity that supports worthy causes in south-east Dorset, has donated £50,000 to help not-forprofit organisation 360 Skills For Life keep schoolchildren safe across Dorset through classroom-based interactive learning. The Trust’s funding has helped the charity create Skill City, a high-quality virtual reality environment to address safeguarding issues for Year 6 to Year 9 pupils (10-14 year olds). Rob Hattersley, Founder and Managing Director of 360 Life Skills, said: “Safeguarding children is a matter of huge concern in schools and society generally, especially during the pandemic. Schools and agencies are doing so much in terms of improving processes, but there is an opportunity to use the classroom itself to raise awareness and confidence in children for keeping themselves safe.” Rob Hattersley added: “We are immensely grateful that Talbot Village Trust has enabled us to launch our first phase on safeguarding for 10-14 year olds. The Trust has given us a great foundation on which we can build, extending out to younger age groups and a wide range of additional skills for life topics, such as active travel and the climate emergency.” There are up to 18 age-appropriate safeguarding dilemmas available for teachers to select for students to experience either as a class or in groups. Within different virtual environments, including streets, crossings, parks, shops, police and railway stations, schoolchildren can play out scenarios, assess risks and investigate options. The objective is for pupils to develop transferable skills for every scenario in order to make confident decisions to keep themselves and others safe in real life.

Nicholas AshleyCooper, Chairman of Talbot Village Trust, said: “As supporters of the SafeWise charity, we were saddened by its closure in January 2021 due to Covid-related issues and are delighted to pledge our support to its new digital counterpart. 360 Skills For Life is a dynamic social enterprise with the foresight to look beyond exams to prepare our young people with the skills and confidence they need to live fulfilling and safer lives. We look forward to seeing how the pilot phase has helped children across the region when the full academic evaluation is published in early 2023.” Phase one is now live, with a limited number of fully funded places for both primary and secondary schools across BCP and Dorset council areas. Schools interested in applying are encouraged to get in touch through the website www.360skillsforlife.org Rob Hattersley continued: “Due to the current situation in schools, we have extended membership to the end of July 2023. This will allow schools joining us this term to explore the resource before they incorporate it into curriculum planning for the next academic year.” The Talbot Village Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in Autumn 2022. Understanding Investments: Actions to take in volatile markets Investment markets have experienced a very challenging 2022 to date. In fact if the year ended now, it would be the first time since 1969 that both the bond markets and equity markets are negative (usually bonds rise in value as equities fall and visaversa, which is why many portfolios contain a mix of both). This has been created by 3 main concerns. • Prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, investment markets had recovered strongly post COVID and concerns were that the economy, and especially demand for goods, was overheating and creating inflation that needed to be cooled. Central banks started to implement interest rate increases in an attempt to slow demand. Rising interest rates reduce the capital value of bonds (think a see-saw so as rates go up on one side the values fall on the other). Shares valuations can also reduce because when you buy a share, you are buying its future earnings. What you might pay for that will be more if you can only earn 0.1% on cash and less if you can earn 2% on cash-hence why share valuations have fallen. • The Russia/Ukraine conflict has resulted in higher food and energy costs, which are likely to remain an issue for as long as the conflict continues. • There are fears that the combined effect of higher prices and higher interest rates will cool consumer demand and push the world into a recession. This will help reduce inflation but at what cost? It is at times like these that experience counts. Whilst each event is different, history has taught us that the way investment markets react can be surprisingly similar. This is a time to make rational, thoughtful decisions based on facts rather than emotions. Some time-tested suggestions: 1. Remember what you are investing for, and your financial objectives. These are unlikely to have changed during the past few months and should help you put potentially worrying headlines into context. 2. Focus on what you think markets will be doing or where they might be in 5-10 years-time, not on what has happened in the last month or what

will happen next month. If you are investing for the long-term, prices Howard Goodship of good quality investments are now lower and offer better value than before. 3. Using cash reserves as a short-term measure instead of taking income from investments can be a sensible idea. Now is not the time to sell investments unless you need the proceeds in the short-term. 4. It is notoriously difficult to time the markets. If you sell, you not only have to time your exit but also your re-entry. Even professionals with all available data struggle with this. It is time in the market that counts as historically the worst days in the market are often followed by some of the best and missing just a handful of days can affect your returns for years. 5. Market declines are common and part of investing. In fact, investing money during market declines has historically produced above average returns over the long term. We are here to help. Whilst we don’t possess a crystal ball (no-one does by the way, despite what the newspaper experts might say), we do have plenty of data and experience to support our views. We are objective, and believe that it is during difficult, volatile times that we prove our worth for our clients. The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi, our wonderful “Modern Magazines Campervan” loves a success story. This month he was very excited to be taking us to Marshfield Farm near Bath. The journey there is really quite stunning. Winding roads between beautiful, luscious green hills with views as far as the eye could see. Very soothing and Daichi purred his way there. Having bought an ice-cream parlour just a few months ago, and now serving this delicious ice-cream in our newly acquired “Wafflicious” premises on Weymouth seafront, we were really looking forward to seeing the factory and the farm for the first time. Based around a 17th Century Manor House, nestled in rolling green fields, this really is an idyllic place. Tim, alias Dad, and his wife bought the then run-down farm in 1971 and have created a haven for organically fed cows and now yummy flavoured ice-cream. Tim has worked on farms all his life and clearly loves his cows. They are well looked after. Will, his

Daichi is all smiles arriving at Marshfield Farm! son, had a passion for ice-cream from an early age and Dawn his lovely wife laughed about the amount of icecream parlours they visited in Italy on their honeymoon some years ago. In 1988 after returning from agricultural college, Will wanted to diversify the family milk business and took up the challenge to create their first ice-cream – vanilla – which still today remains one of their best sellers. What an achievement. Originally there were around 35 cows, but now, some 30 years later there are 250 cows grazing on the 1100 acres of organically farmed land. The business is thriving. Cows are miked twice a day, once at 5am and then at 4pm, seven days a week. It is a never-ending task. In between these times the happy cows merrily eat the grass in the meadows surrounding the house, factory and newly built warehouses which have been adorned with hundreds of solar panels. These not only save thousands of pounds

in electricity costs (and who would say no to that these days?) but are very eco-friendly. Planting trees, keeping bees and really taking care of the environment is at the heart of Marshfield’s philosophy. It really is a family affair with the grandchildren now running the factory and the farm, with their parents and grandparents. So, we met the cows that eat the grass, that produce the milk that makes the ice-cream, that you eat! What a production line. The dog ice-cream is a real winner. One of the best on the market and full of nutrients for our four-legged friends, Marshfield literally make thousands of these tubbed delights every week. We even met Scoop who is the face of the ice-cream! Of course, it would have been rude not to devour some of the delicious ice-cream ourselves, before leaving. Emma, who works very hard in our parlour, had a little too much and could hardly eat her dinner! I think she can be forgiven as all of the flavours are just delicious. The ice-cream parlour there, with bales of straw to sit on and slowly enjoy the creamy treats, is open at weekends to visitors during the summer, so if you fancy a bit of indulgence and a wonderful drive,

Even the cows are licking their lips! then we highly recommend a trip to the farm. Of course, there is our very own parlour too, opposite the helter skelter on the Esplanade in Weymouth. “Wafflicious Weymouth” is its name and is not only home to mouthwatering Marshfield ice-cream, but also light and delectable waffles. We have some wonderful reviews on Facebook and are delighted with all the smiles and happy faces we see every day. With regular visitors now from near and far, we are extremely pleased with what we have achieved in just four months. We are not quite a Marshfield Farm success story yet, but who knows… time will tell. The good news is the ability to rescue and repair that credit rating is within our own hands, and with a concerted plan we can get back to where we want to be. And that’s important – having a good credit rating means gaining access to preferential interest rates; it could be the difference between being able to buy a house, or rent a flat, or not; and it also gives us peace of mind that if an emergency crops up we can lean on financial support. When it comes to improving

our credit score, ﬁrst check your current rating – with the likes of Experian or Equifax – and know what you’re dealing with. When you’ve done that, see about disassociating yourself from others who may be pulling you down with their own chequered credit history - their activity may be negatively impacting yours. Next, get yourself signed up on the electoral roll. It’s a great way for credit agencies to be able to verify who you are and adds a layer of authenticity to any application.

Spring cleaning your ﬁnances is another really sensible option. Many of us have old credit cards or bank accounts that we don’t use. They may seem harmless on the face of it, but they all represent risk as far as your credit score is concerned. Next, start investing in your credit future. Using a credit card may seem a peculiar way of improving your credit, but done sensibly it will. And by sensibly, I mean use it for everyday purchases on the speciﬁc understanding you’ll clear the balance at the end of each month. Doing this will boost your credit rating and prove to any lender that you can be trusted. Finally, if you can’t afford to clear your full balance at the end of the month, at least pay off more than the minimum payment. Mending your credit score won’t be achieved overnight, but your future self will thank you for your efforts today!

Raymond Blanc’s Lemon Cake Introduction Lemon cake with tea is a grand tradition at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and it has been served here for almost 40 years. What I love about the perfect lemon cake is it’s fresh, zesty and as light as a cloud.

Ingredients (serves 8) For the lemon cake • butter, to grease the tin • 5 eggs • 300g caster sugar • 140ml double cream • finely grated zest of 3 lemons • 25ml dark rum • 1 pinch sea salt • 80g unsalted butter, melted • 240g plain flour • ½ tsp baking powder For the glaze • 50g apricot jam, warmed • finely grated zest of 1 lemon, plus 3 tbsp juice • 150g icing sugar

Method

2. Sift the ﬂour and baking powder together, then whisk into the egg mixture until smooth, spooning the mixture into the loaf tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes, turning the tin around halfway through cooking. To test the cake, insert a small knife into the middle – if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked. 3. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool for 10 minutes. 4. Lightly brush the cake all over with the warm jam. The jam creates a barrier, so the lemon glaze is not absorbed. Leave for 5 minutes.

5. Now mix the lemon zest and juice with the icing sugar in a small pan and warm over a low heat to 35°C, until smooth. If the glaze is any hotter, it will recrystallise, losing its shine and crispness. Brush the lemon glaze evenly over the top and sides of the cake and leave for a few minutes to set. 6. Finally, place the cake on a baking tray in the oven, turn off the heat and leave for 3–5 minutes to dry the glaze – it will become translucent. Allow to cool before slicing.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the most common mistakes we make in our gardens. I always say, as a golden rule, prevention is better than cure, so with that in mind here are my top seven gardening mistakes… and how to avoid them! Firstly, you can have too much of a good thing! Less is more when it comes to good gardening, and if you cram too much together it’ll look a mess, or worse still, will die!

but only if they’re left in the ground! Another big thing is failing to prepare your soil. Give your plants a chance by ensuring the soil they’re in is in good condition. A simple testing kit will let you know if you need to re-compost, add fertiliser, or simply switch to a different soil type. You should also steer clear of what I call ‘the bullies’! Japanese knotweed and Russian vine are particularly unruly and will literally

My ﬁnal piece of advice is to try to spread the love around your garden. Next, always ensure what you’re pulling up are weeds and not slow-developing flowers. We can sometimes find ourselves being particularly ruthless with what grows in our gardens, so remember, everything grows at a different rate and sometimes the most mundane of plants will flourish to become the most beautiful…

Remember, no two gardens are the same, in much the same way that no two gardeners are the same, and you’re never going to get it right all of the time. The most important thing is to be organised and put the effort in – if you do that, the rewards will very often follow close behind.
