How can we improve the town centre? Ringwood shoppers are encouraged to share their views. With its historic market square Ringwood has been popular with the community and visitors for generations, but how should it look in years to come? That’s what the group forming the town’s Neighbourhood Plan are hoping to set out and they want your help. Members of the Plan’s steering committee have been canvassing shoppers and shopkeepers to get their views on the town centre and have launched a new online survey to get your views. What would improve the town? Does it need more independent shops? More cafes? More parking? Now is the time to have your say at www.ringwoodnp. org.uk/towncentre. “We want the whole of the shopping area to grow and thrive, with the marketplace not just a place we gather at Christmas and the Carnival, but somewhere we eat, greet, meet, and shop. Somewhere that visitors recognise as the centre of a market town, connecting the Furlong, high street and beyond to the parks, green 6

spaces, and cycleways that surround us”, says Janet Georgiou, a local resident and key member of the Plan’s committee. Janet has been out asking shoppers what they think and urges as many people to take part as possible. “The feedback we’re getting from the community is excellent. People are engaged with what we want to achieve.”, she adds. The survey received more than 300 responses in the first 24 hours of going live, with residents commenting on the town’s friendly atmosphere and its range of independent and diverse shops. The survey is the first of many those involved in the Neighbourhood Plan want to ask as they aim to establish a vision of Ringwood in 2050, addressing present issues and hoping to make the town more selfsustaining and resilient.

Mintey’s Corn Store/Hillﬁelds House Castleman Way, Ringwood Taken in c.1910

This prominent building standing beside Castleman Way nearly opposite The Railway public house was built in 1867 by Walter James Kingsbury, the grocer whose shop at Fridays Cross was described in the last issue of Now & Then. Presumably he used it for storing grocery goods which were supplied by rail and unloaded via a railway siding constructed in front of the building. Originally the store consisted of two bays only, the third at the east end being added around 1900. By this time the property had become a corn stores belonging to Alexander Mintey, a corn, cake and seed merchant. In 1902 a gas engine was installed which drove a belt that worked the machinery in the first floor. Like its main rival Frampton’s Mill, Mintey’s did not produce flour but mainly ground animal feed and chaff using a chaff cutter and winnowing machine driven from an overhead drive shaft. Being next to the railway was a keen advantage. A significant part of the business was the sale of cattle food and cake, as shown by the prominent Thorley’s advertisements displayed on the front of the store. The proprietor Alex

Mintey can be seen in the old photograph c1910, standing at the first floor opening wearing a hat. He lived very close by in Southend House, at the bottom of Hightown Road. On Wednesday market days he could be found standing outside the Original White Hart displaying his seed samples. A model of his store around this time, made by Mr Mintey’s grandson Alec Fry, can be seen in the upstairs gallery of the Meeting House. Although Alex Mintey sold his business in 1937, the building continued to be known as Mintey’s Yard. During World War II it was used by American soldiers and later in the 20th century by W. A. Ghrimes Ltd as a furniture depository. At the turn of the 21st century the property was drastically altered by new windows and the addition of a large modern front extension, in my opinion totally out of character with the original Victorian building. Unfortunately the date plaque of 1867 with the initials WJK standing for Walter James Kingsbury was obliterated in the process. Today the building is known as Hillfields House and contains an assortment of offices.

Ringwood School - £2.8 Million of Funding Success Ringwood School has been successful in securing £2.8 million of grants to carry out major improvement works to school buildings under the Government’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) programme. £2.2 million will be spent on a brand-new School Hall and associated works including signiﬁcant improvementsto existing student dining facilities, and £0.6 million will be spent on a thermal upgrades and re-rooﬁng works to the Science and Technology buildings. The School has worked on the funding bid with Ringwood based consultantsKendall Kingscott. The CIF programme is an annual round of bidding under which academy schools and colleges can apply for funding for the upkeep and improvement of their buildings and to fund expansion projects for schools that have been rated good or

outstanding by Ofsted. Leanne Symonds, Headteacher said: “Ringwood School is an oversubscribed, successful and high achieving school, but the facilities we are able to oﬀer our young people at lunch time are much too crowded and insuﬃcient. This successful application will enable us to build a new facility large enough to accommodate the daily needs of a busy school, but will also ensure we can providea safer, light, warm space to eat in a civilised manner thus providing outstanding opportunities for physical, social and emotional development of all students and the best conditions for their learning”. Works on both projects will commence later this summer and are anticipated to be complete for September 2022.

The Great British Snake Off When you think of snakes, you might picture a fat boa constrictor basking beside a Brazilian river, or a king cobra rearing up from the dust of an Indian plain. Snakes seem too exotic for the often cold, wet and windy weather of the UK. But snakes are adaptable creatures, found on every continent but Antarctica. Here are the UK’s three species of snake. The biggest: grass snakes The grass snake is our longest snake, growing to well over a metre. They’re usually a greygreen colour and most easily recognised by the black and yellow collar behind the head. They have dark eyes with round pupils, whereas adders have elliptical pupils in their bright red eyes. Grass snakes can be found in areas with long grass often near water, including garden ponds. They’re excellent swimmers and regularly feed on fish, frogs, toads and newts. Grass snakes are our only egg-laying native snake. Grass snakes are not venomous. They’re very shy creatures and will quickly slither away if they are disturbed. If they don’t have an escape route, they may play dead and roll onto their back with their tongue hanging out. As a last resort, if they’re handled, they can also release a foul-smelling liquid from their vent. The most misunderstood: adder Our only venomous native snake, the adder has picked up a bad reputation and often inspires fear. Bites can occasionally be serious (and should always be immediately checked at a hospital), but they aren’t aggressive and rarely bite people. Most bites happen when a snake is handled or stood on. Adders prefer wilder habitats than grass snakes, like heaths, woodland rides, and coastal dunes. They are rarely found in gardens. They’re shorter but stockier than a grass snake, and are usually grey-brown with a distinctive

zig-zag pattern along the back. Male adders ‘dance’ to fight over females, entwining with each other and trying to wrestle the other male to the ground. Instead of laying eggs, females incubate them internally and ‘give birth’ to up to 20 live young. The rarest: smooth snake Snakes are secretive and hard to see at the best of times, but smooth snakes are so rare that very few people in the UK are likely to have seen one. They’re found across mainland Europe, but in Great Britain are only found on a few sandy heaths in southern England: in Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Devon. Smooth snakes grow up to about 70cm long, are slender and usually grey or dark brown, with dark markings along the back. The dark markings aren’t as distinct as an adder’s zigzags, and they have round pupils (compared to the adder’s elliptical pupils). Smooth snakes aren’t venomous. They catch their prey with their teeth and coil their body around it like a constrictor, most often feeding on lizards and small mammals. Alice Ashcroft

Understanding Investments: Planning to retire within the next ten years? For many people, life is an act of juggling competing financial demands. However, this can often change between forty-five and fifty-five when children may have grown up and become financially independent, debts including the mortgage have been reduced or cleared and you are in your peak earning years. This is when thoughts may turn to the next major change in your life, retirement! Realising there are only ten years or less to maximise savings, clients often tell me it’s time to “get serious” about financial planning and want to ensure they retain and save as much of their earnings as possible and minimise the tax they pay. They also want to understand “how much is enough?” and have a plan to enable them to retire at a time of their choosing. I have listed below some of the key information required to help create a plan. 1. Understand what loans (including mortgage) are outstanding, what interest is being charged and when loans are due to be repaid. It is important to be debt free at retirement, albeit there are several ways to achieve that depending on your personal tax situation. 2. Obtain a state pension projection to understand what you will be entitled to and when. This can be obtained online via the Government website and will be a valuable source of inflation-protected income at the state pension age. It is possible to top this up with lump sum payments if you haven’t been credited with the full thirty-five years of National Insurance contributions. 3. Obtain projections from any Defined Benefit Pensions. These can also provide future inflation-protected income and the date they are due to commence will vary depending on scheme rules. 4. Quantify your personal assets which include cash, investments, and property.

Understand what your investments such as ISAS Howard Goodship and Pensions are invested in and to what level of risk they are exposed to. Is this too low or too high or just right, based on when you plan to retire. Do your pension plans allow full pension freedom flexibility in the way you can access income in retirement (Flexi-Access Drawdown, UFPLS, Annuities)? Once you understand your current position, you need to quantify how much you will need to have accrued by the time you want to retire. Often people want to retire before the state pension age or need more income than the state provide, so how do you save enough to meet those gaps? What is the most tax-efficient way to save? Any financial plan also needs to incorporate inflation -for example inflation at 3% per annum means expenses in retirement could double every twenty-four years. We utilise specialist cash-flow tools to answer all these questions and help clients plan for their retirement. Once in retirement, we help them maximise their lifestyles by showing them whether their retirement “wish-list” is affordable and if so, encouraging them to do things whilst they are fit and able. Local farm is delivering in more ways than one! Week Farm is a family run farm on the banks of the River Avon, just south of Ringwood. For the last 20 years Chris and Carolyn Snow have been running Avon Organics, delivering vegetable boxes to the local area and rearing sheep and cattle. Organic farming means that no chemicals can be added to the land to support commercial growing and encourages greater biodiversity, higher welfare and better sustainability for the long term. Started in 2001, the couple wanted to give customers the chance to buy direct from the organic supply chain. They started growing what suited the sandy soil and the business provided a small diversification from the rest of the farm, giving access to seasonal produce in set boxes. Fast forward to 2020, things were really turned upside down when the need for home deliveries grew exponentially. And whilst the farm has been feeding customers on the outside, at one point increasing the delivery rounds four-fold, back at home it has become a refuge for many others during the pandemic. A hardy team of volunteers have joined to assist with planting more stock, relentless manual weeding, packing the boxes and making deliveries. Through this the farm has provided focus for furloughed workers and friends who have been able to get outside in all weathers, improving mental and physical health, even resulting in some joining the team long term. That team is now much more than just Chris and Carolyn, who are still very much at its core. With two vans out each week, the whole family are hands on in the business. The name’s Bond...but not for much longer As he bids farewell to every actor’s dream role, we look at the legacy Daniel Craig’s James Bond has left behind. To equate his Bond experiment to the process of the average gymgoer, Daniel Craig is showered, moisturised, halfway towards being dressed and grateful for the occasional glimpse in the changing room mirror… one which flashes back reflections that his 007 persona might casually approve of with a muttered, “good job”. Speculation that the actor was saying his farewell to James Bond has been circling for some years, but now, unequivocally, he is done, as the rather clumsily named No Time To Die hits cinemas. As it does, the 53-year-old emerges with a few things – a life-defining imprint on the CV, a multimillion-pound war

chest, and the knowledge that he has influenced a generation of cinemagoers in refining the definition of the modern-day hero. “I’ve always thought the image of a good actor is someone who leaves the big gestures and sweeping statements for when the cameras are rolling,” he begins. “That should really be the beginning and the end of what we expect of our actors. “I don’t want to be the type who puts himself on a pedestal away from that. What right do I have to comment at length on politics or society or the environment? And why should anyone take any notice of me anyway? I’m an actor!” Back on screen, it has been interesting to see how far removed the modern version of Bond is compared to his immediate predecessors Brosnan and Dalton. And while Connery and Moore never strayed into dadbod mode, they represented an era where Bond smoked, drank and

copulated his way through problems. At the heart of what deﬁnes Bond is, according to Daniel Craig, a good yarn, purely and simply. “Just stick to the old adage that a good story goes a long way…. and blow stuff up every few minutes,” he laughs heartily. “That’s how it’s done.” Yet what makes the man himself is something rather more complex. “If you want it too little – a great body, a great ﬁlm role, a beautiful girl – you won’t get it. The same thing will happen if you want something too much - you’ll go too far the other way, burn out, overdo it, get injured. Were you an avid fan of this Iconic, now internationally renowned British show, in the late 60’s and 70’s? Back in the day this BBC sitcom reached 80 million viewers an episode and with nine series and 80 episodes in total there was a lot to laugh about. I had booked these tickets more than 18 months ago, well before any Lockdown, or hint of international adversity, so you can imagine the crowd, the audience, all seated and eagerly anticipating the

Daichi at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne cast’s appearance. When the tannoy announcement welcomed us all back to a “live show”, there was the best cheer I have heard for a long time. The audience was ready. Oh what excitement, oh what a buzz. We were there. We were with the characters. We were on that stage. Fortunately, metaphorically speaking, as the actors themselves were well rehearsed, and I am sure, as eagerly anticipating their performances as we were to watch them. We were all back together. I have been in plays (a few years ago now…) at school, and I take my hat off to these ambitious individuals, not professionals, but ‘ordinary local people’ with working lives and families to support, who work tremendously hard to put on a fully professional show. We salute you! “Don’t Panic!” You did a FANTASTIC job. You were all so in character and fully entertained us. How funny is that. The play started with “The Deadly Attachment” and the capturing of a German U Boat Captain and his crew. The unfearing, cantankerous Captain Mainwaring, a bank manager by trade, orders soggy fish and chips for them, much to the German captors’ displeasure. It is good-old British humour at its best. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Followed by a scene from “Mum’s Army” in which Captain Mainwaring has a wandering eye and takes a fancy to Mrs Gray. It is such a shame that many of our great British lines and innuendos are disallowed and frowned on these days. In my opinion we have one of the best senses of humour on the planet and are able to laugh at ourselves in a healthy way. It is very therapeutic. After the much-loved ice-cream interval break, came “The Godiva Affair” where poor Mr Mainwaring watches his wife cavorting ‘naked’ through the streets (actually in a full cream body suit, but fortunately it was only left to the imagination…), as she poses as Lady Godiva in a fund-raising carnival parade. As my Dad would say, “You couldn’t

Great hilarity in “the office” write it, could you, Deb!” Well, Jimmy Perry and David Croft did - and oh did we all laugh! “The Floral Dance” was the final scene and as the actors gave us their departing lines, and the curtains slowly started dropping we were all smiles and clapped and cheered to our hearts delight. Eleven of us from Modern Magazines had gone to watch this fantastic ‘blast from the past’, literally from ages 17 to 80, and all of us had a fabulous evening. “Project Play” who produces these incredible shows does a great job managing and creating them. Matthew Rock, the Director and Producer, is ever grateful to all the local people who act and spend hours of their time rehearsing, the stagehands who create each scene throughout the show, the dress makers, makeup artists and the whole team which it takes to put on such a production. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect looks ahead to some design trends that might rise to prominence over the next few years. I get asked a lot about future design trends and initiatives, and the truth is I wouldn’t know what a trend was if it hit me in the face! Over the years I’ve come to regard trends as very lucid, irregular things – they come about quickly, are mixed and remixed, then disappear out of nowhere; and with interior design that can be problematic given the semipermanency of how we furnish our homes. It’s not like saying ‘this pair of trousers are out of fashion this year; I’ll wear a different pair tomorrow’. If you’ve added wood panelling to every wall in your home, it’s going to take a while to ﬁx. What I will say is what happens at the beginning of every century in design and

architecture is that people stop and look back at the last century and say, ‘oh my God, we didn’t get any of that, quick, let’s have some’, and you get this rush of building and design and furniture which is kind of retro – we’ve seen it over the past decade or so with a complete craze for anything vintage from 1930-90s. It’s fair to say we’re always looking forward as far as home design goes, both

architecturally and in the patterns and designs within. If I had to put money on a style or theme over the next couple of decades, it would be eco-based. We’re seeing a real retune to very natural, sustainable materials - basic stuff. Yet also, thanks to changes in technology and the way that

we design, often using iPhones, we can survey and model things really cheaply now. So that means we are going to see all manner of goods – from home products right through to personal stuff like shoes – made not in some factory in Germany, China or Portugal, but in a shop round the corner from where you live using really sophisticated 3D printing techniques. Certainly, a look into the future is a view back towards bespoking our homes in our own design. The era of the IKEA mass-market products has helped us a lot, but technology is now freeing us to style our homes in much more personal ways. It will mean we can turn back into being a nation who make things for ourselves, in a bespoke way, which I think is a very exciting future.

Organic cotton still requires this, but at least doesn’t use pesticides, although only 1 in every 100 t-shirts is currently made this way.

Eco-spun - A high-quality, dense and durable ﬁbre made from plastic bottles.

Soya - Use of soya in tofu manufacturing may only be recognised in foodstuffs, but fibres are incredibly soft and can mimic the feel of cashmere, making this an interesting choice. The fibres will typically be mixed with organic cotton. Organic Silk - For many, the texture of silk is irresistible, and the organic version of one of the most expensive textiles out there can wrestle matters back into an acceptable eco space. What makes silk organic is that the silkworm isn’t killed. Instead, the tiny silkworms are taken outdoors to a food tree where they spin their cocoons. Silk is extracted by unwinding or spinning the filaments, and the silk moth emerges unharmed.

Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration; and this month, as autumn works its way into our outdoor spaces, Alan Titchmarsh explains why variety is the spice of life, even in the garden! With the approach of autumn, at the moment we’re going through that phase where the colours and the shapes are changing. There’s sometimes a sadness when you realise summer is coming to an end, and the leaves certainly seem to be falling earlier this year. My advice though is to embrace the new season and really go after all the potential and possibilities that it holds. After all, we’re actually very lucky in Britain – where plants are concerned we can afford ourselves a different favourite every month; snowdrops in January, daffodils in February, tulips in March and so on. People tend to associate autumn with brown and orange tones, and a rustling underfoot; but it’s about much more than

that. One of the most exciting times is when you wake up on a certain day and you can just smell the fact the season has arrived. It’s something in the air - a kind of sourness, a tang that lingers. You can smell things just beginning to decay, but it’s in a way that is replenishing, stimulating and invigorating because it means things are turning and new possibilities are around the corner.

look at the lovely ferns it’s now growing. Next, perhaps start autumn with a tidy-up of borders, or a clean out of the greenhouse, or perhaps even renew a few tools. Also consider getting your compost boosted with all those leaves suddenly in abundance. And ﬁnally, invest in some evergreens to offer texture and volume in areas of the garden that might start looking a little sparser. Mostly though, look forward to the coming change and admire nature’s versatility. There is tremendous colour still around us, and where the leaves have descended, look at the skeletal, artistic majesty of trees.

So as autumn arrives I would offer the following bits of advice. Firstly, hold on to the last bits of colour and savour them. Next, enjoy what’s there - perhaps you have some raspberries or any number of the late-ﬂowering varieties such as Cyclamens, Begonias, and of course, Crocuses. Also see how your garden is evolving – sure, that asparagus bed is no longer cropping, but

Sway Bowmen History Sway Bowmen Archery Club was established in 1985 primarily as a Target Archery Club within the New Forest National Park. Our ﬁrst venue was at Sway Football Club, but as membership increased we moved to Skanlands Farm where we held our ﬁrst Club championships.

During the winter months we also shoot indoors at Brockenhurst College on Wednesday evenings.

With membership increasing further Sway Bowmen moved to a more permanent site on Birchy Hill where we stayed until 1999.

We have about 120 members with ages ranging from juniors up to 75+ years old. We have archers of all abilities from beginners up to archers of international standard.

Our ginal move was to Great Break Field on the outskirts of Sway Village. We are fortunate to have unlimited access to our range which the Club now owns. Our members enjoy a full outdoor season of shoothing and social activities as well as our annual Mushroom Shoot which is enjoyed by Archery Clubs across the region.

Sway Bowmen are now in the enviable position of having a superb new clubhouse constructed at our range, work having now commenced.
