New Detached Youth Service in Ringwood about potential activities that they would like to part in. This is a pilot service although it is hoped that if successful further funding will be found.

ver the summer, a new Detached Youth Service was launched in Ringwood. The service is funded by Ringwood Town Council but is operated by charity Groundwork South who operate similar services in other Hampshire Towns. Detached youth work involves making contact with young people where they are, rather than from a particular building or service. The aim is to build relationships with the young people and provide informal social education, support, games and activities. Youth workers operate across designated areas speciﬁcally targeting hot spots as identiﬁed by the Police and other services to help tackle anti-social behaviour. The two youth workers in Ringwood are also exploring ideas with young people who are not engaged in other formal activities in the town 6

Craig Lockwood, Project Manager from Groundwork South said, “we are thrilled to be operating in the beautiful town of Ringwood and can’t wait to support and guide the local youth into a brighter future and help build a stronger community. Our detached work in Eastleigh has helped to reduce anti sociable behaviours, create positive pathways for young people and listen to the young resident’s views and wants. We can’t wait to do this in Ringwood over the coming months.” Local police are supportive of the project. Acting Police Sergeant, Sarah Gulliver said, “the Ringwood Policing Team are pleased to be supporting the New Detached Youth Service in the area and their important work in reaching out to young people. This type of youth work is not only beneﬁcial for the young people themselves but for the community as a whole.”

Mintey’s Corn Store/Hillﬁelds House Castleman Way, Ringwood Taken in c.1910

This prominent building standing beside Castleman Way nearly opposite The Railway public house was built in 1867 by Walter James Kingsbury, the grocer whose shop at Fridays Cross was described in the last issue of Now & Then. Presumably he used it for storing grocery goods which were supplied by rail and unloaded via a railway siding constructed in front of the building. Originally the store consisted of two bays only, the third at the east end being added around 1900. By this time the property had become a corn stores belonging to Alexander Mintey, a corn, cake and seed merchant. In 1902 a gas engine was installed which drove a belt that worked the machinery in the first floor. Like its main rival Frampton’s Mill, Mintey’s did not produce flour but mainly ground animal feed and chaff using a chaff cutter and winnowing machine driven from an overhead drive shaft. Being next to the railway was a keen advantage. A significant part of the business was the sale of cattle food and cake, as shown by the prominent Thorley’s advertisements displayed on the front of the store. The proprietor Alex

Mintey can be seen in the old photograph c1910, standing at the first floor opening wearing a hat. He lived very close by in Southend House, at the bottom of Hightown Road. On Wednesday market days he could be found standing outside the Original White Hart displaying his seed samples. A model of his store around this time, made by Mr Mintey’s grandson Alec Fry, can be seen in the upstairs gallery of the Meeting House. Although Alex Mintey sold his business in 1937, the building continued to be known as Mintey’s Yard. During World War II it was used by American soldiers and later in the 20th century by W. A. Ghrimes Ltd as a furniture depository. At the turn of the 21st century the property was drastically altered by new windows and the addition of a large modern front extension, in my opinion totally out of character with the original Victorian building. Unfortunately the date plaque of 1867 with the initials WJK standing for Walter James Kingsbury was obliterated in the process. Today the building is known as Hillfields House and contains an assortment of offices.

The Great British Snake Off When you think of snakes, you might picture a fat boa constrictor basking beside a Brazilian river, or a king cobra rearing up from the dust of an Indian plain. Snakes seem too exotic for the often cold, wet and windy weather of the UK. But snakes are adaptable creatures, found on every continent but Antarctica. Here are the UK’s three species of snake. The biggest: grass snakes The grass snake is our longest snake, growing to well over a metre. They’re usually a greygreen colour and most easily recognised by the black and yellow collar behind the head. They have dark eyes with round pupils, whereas adders have elliptical pupils in their bright red eyes. Grass snakes can be found in areas with long grass often near water, including garden ponds. They’re excellent swimmers and regularly feed on fish, frogs, toads and newts. Grass snakes are our only egg-laying native snake. Grass snakes are not venomous. They’re very shy creatures and will quickly slither away if they are disturbed. If they don’t have an escape route, they may play dead and roll onto their back with their tongue hanging out. As a last resort, if they’re handled, they can also release a foul-smelling liquid from their vent. The most misunderstood: adder Our only venomous native snake, the adder has picked up a bad reputation and often inspires fear. Bites can occasionally be serious (and should always be immediately checked at a hospital), but they aren’t aggressive and rarely bite people. Most bites happen when a snake is handled or stood on. Adders prefer wilder habitats than grass snakes, like heaths, woodland rides, and coastal dunes. They are rarely found in gardens. They’re shorter but stockier than a grass snake, and are usually grey-brown with a distinctive

zig-zag pattern along the back. Male adders ‘dance’ to fight over females, entwining with each other and trying to wrestle the other male to the ground. Instead of laying eggs, females incubate them internally and ‘give birth’ to up to 20 live young. The rarest: smooth snake Snakes are secretive and hard to see at the best of times, but smooth snakes are so rare that very few people in the UK are likely to have seen one. They’re found across mainland Europe, but in Great Britain are only found on a few sandy heaths in southern England: in Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Devon. Smooth snakes grow up to about 70cm long, are slender and usually grey or dark brown, with dark markings along the back. The dark markings aren’t as distinct as an adder’s zigzags, and they have round pupils (compared to the adder’s elliptical pupils). Smooth snakes aren’t venomous. They catch their prey with their teeth and coil their body around it like a constrictor, most often feeding on lizards and small mammals. Alice Ashcroft

Understanding Investments: Pension Income Options at and during Retirement Retirement, and the associated ceasing of the ability to earn an income, can be a scary thought and is certainly a huge decision. Understanding the effect of inflation on your income needs throughout retirement (at 3% inflation your expenditure will double over 24 years) and other significant capital requirements needs more than a “finger in the air” analysis. At Lonsdale Wealth Management, we utilize cash-flow planning tools to help clients understand whether retirement is affordable and just as importantly, sustainable. Once affordability has been identified, decisions on the most effective way to generate retirement income can be made. There are more choices than you might think! Retirement Income is divided into secure income and flexible income. Secure income would include Defined Benefit Pension Schemes, the State Pension and Pension Annuities. Flexible income includes Pension Drawdown and income from capital and investments, with rental income classed between the two, as it is secure but can be subject to void periods. You can currently access your defined contribution pension savings any time after age 55 although the minimum age is increasing to 57 in 2028 and will remain 10 years below state pension age thereafter. You have five broad choices and for each option, 25% of your pension savings can be paid tax-free: 1. Secure Income-Annuity Exchange your pension savings for an annuity provided by an insurance company which is then guaranteed for the rest of your life (with options including a dependent’s annuity). Annuity income is subject to income tax. 2. Secure Income-Temporary Annuity Little known but can be very attractive for those who want to retire early. Can provide a higher guaranteed income for a specific number of years (perhaps until other pensions such as the State Pension commence) to allow

the balance of pension funds to remain invested. Annuity income is subject to income tax.

3. Flexi-Access Drawdown Take the income you need when you need it. The money remains invested and you draw a variable level of income for as long as your money lasts. Withdrawals are subject to income tax. 4. Cash Payment Have all your savings paid as a cash lump sum, with 75% of the fund subject to income tax. 5. Leave it for now There is no requirement to draw your savings from your pension and the fund can be passed down to a nominated beneficiary (and through different generations), often outside of your estate and therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax. The 25% tax free lump sum is lost if not taken during lifetime, but your funds can be paid tax-free on death before 75 (taxable on death after 75). Big Ben Ben Fogle has made a name for himself across a variety of pursuits, though after a couple of years away from the cut and thrust of extreme adventure, the presenter, explorer and activist is summoning up the courage for a new challenge. From Ben Fogle’s TV breakthrough on the BBC reality show Castaway 2000 – which saw him marooned on a remote Scottish island with 36 other people for a year – to competing in the six-day, 160-mile Marathon des Sables, to racing across the Antarctic Plateau to the South Pole, to ascending Mount Everest, Ben Fogle has never shied away from a challenge. Despite living in London for most of his life, Fogle’s passion for the great outdoors has merged with a natural talent for broadcasting to present the 47-year-old with some true lifechanging experiences. “I love one-off experiences; challenges that take me to mental and physical extremes, and that element of danger where you are pushing yourself to the edge,” he begins. Two guys on their own in a small 20ft vessel with no support around them is pretty terrifying, especially when you capsize!” Switching back to terra ﬁrma in TV series such as New Lives in the Wild, Storm City, Animal Clinic and Countrywise, as well as writing a series of travel, ﬁction and children’s books, Fogle has enjoyed the relative calm of home. “Life is never dull, but I know I’ll always head back to the oceans,” he says. “They have a spirit all of their own and it’s the passion that draws us back. I love that feeling, so watch this space, I suppose!”

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van It has been said that happiness is a journey and not a destination. Well, I have to say that I am never happier than when Daichi is loaded up, and we begin our next adventure. That moment when we take our seats, buckle up, and say, “Ok, what we have forgotten we can either do without, or we will buy when we get there.” Enough is enough, let’s get going! My ‘story’ this month is all about the journey, the route to and from our destination. This time we went all the way up to Hull to collect my parents, to take my Dad fishing at Docklow Pools again, one of Dad’s favourite fishing haunts. Mum has dementia, which is very sad and not always easy to live with. Dad needs a break and what better than to take them away, get Mum some fresh air and give Dad some time to catch a few fish. His life-long passion. The journey there took us over the Humber Bridge! I remember the building of this magnificent, single span construction when I was a girl. It was so exciting to see the massive layers of concrete starting to crawl, step by step, across the waters. I remember looking at it with awe, wondering how on earth it could stay up in the air like that. To me it was magical. You can see that I am no engineer… The Bridge opened in June 1981 and at the time it was the longest

Grandad and his passion! single span Bridge in the world! It was not until 1998 that a Japanese Bridge literally overtook it and now, 40 years later, it is the eleventh longest bridge of its type on this planet. I love driving over it and viewing the enormous River Humber with its brown murky waters flowing below. To be honest, I don’t think this Bridge has ever really achieved the accolade it deserves. Arriving in Hull is always a trip down memory lane for me and Daichi likes to skip his way there. Sometimes it is good to look back at ones’ roots, with a bit of nostalgia. After a good night’s sleep, we travelled over the Bridge again to see family who have moved over to East Halton in North Lincolnshire. Houses are so much cheaper here! It is so good to catch up, isn’t it. Long lost cousins, aunts, aunts’ children’s children, in fact five generations in all! The weather was warm, there was a beautiful garden and with a glass of wine in hand and a good old chat, what more can we want! Oh yes, we had quite a laugh too. Daichi was part of the family and he loved it. His shiny white grin said it all. Docklow was a great success too. The lakes there

Next stop was Crickley Hill nestled in the Cotswolds overlooking the Severn Vale with incredible views to the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, including Robinswood Hill and May Hill. Just off the A417 in Gloucester, near Birdlip, this was a great find on a previous trip when I was hungry. It is glorious! The views are simply stunning. You can see for miles and gaze at the wonder of our beautiful countryside with a coffee and cake in hand. Owned by the National Trust as well as the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, it is a haven for birds, plants, insects and wildlife. The walks around this area are just spectacular. My Mum and Dad, who were travelling home with us, were amazed

View from Crickley Hill at what they saw and thoroughly enjoyed our scenic stop. Back on the road we travelled further South with our final stop at Avebury. Now in the county of Wiltshire with a Neolithic henge monument containing three huge stone circles. We had arrived in prehistoric Britain and a little further back in time, than my memories in Hull - Though getting out of bed in the mornings, it sometimes doesn’t feel so! Stones weighing around 40 tons still standing, majestically, thousands of years later. How incredible and inspiring is that? For contemporary Pagans this is a site of religious importance. What a fascinating place we live in. England is full of delights, sights, nature and indeed family. Daichi allowed us to do so much in just a week. It was a long round trip from Dorset to East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, to Herefordshire, back through Gloucestershire, into Wilshire and finally back to Dorset, with a stop in each place. The happiness was certainly in the journey. It was spent with family, making it all the more special. Despite the challenges of dementia and ‘old age’ Daichi helped us create a journey packed with good times. Daichi does hope that when you travel you take time to visit along the route. It extends the holiday and adds to all those wonderful memories of times spent together. Where will Daichi take us next I wonder…? By Debbie Corney

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect discusses sustainability and regeneration in our villages, towns and cities. Right now there’s a whole band of architects who are really trying to evolve a style of architecture that combines futuristic with traditional – both ends of the spectrum. What we’re talking about here is incorporating natural materials with contemporary, so you get an airtight insulated building. I am a huge advocate of eco buildings, and I think what a lot of people produce – and we have seen many over the years on Grand Designs – are incredible, intelligent, responsible; but you also have to approach the subject with realism. It may look great on the telly, yet as architects and housebuilders we’ve got to be prepared to admit the very extreme eco/traditional wooden, single grass-roofed, claywalled approach to building

It demonstrates an interest not just in tradition, but in low impact construction. What’s interesting is that proper innovation, regeneration and improvement rarely comes from the top down. Think of the strategies that local authorities put together, and they’re all quite generalist… ‘this is going to be a work area, here’s the bus route, and the houses

We need more ways of stimulating not just these local areas and communities, but the way we build those facilities too; we need to encourage people to take the power back, because authorities rarely seem to be able to make progressive decisions themselves.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, as the nights draw in, Alan Titchmarsh explains how our gardens can still be a place of light, stimulation and decoration, and why now is the time to plan for brighter months ahead. There is a saying: ‘gardeners learn to grow the things that want to grow’. In fact, the truth is everything wants to grow, it’s just up to us not to get in the way of that! A big part of growing is preparation, and the best time to start planning for next year is right now; so really have a good look around your garden, do some research, and revel in the excitement of what it will look like in six months’ time. The ﬁrst things to consider are sunshine and shade; ﬁnd out your plot’s capabilities and then you’ll know how you can grow all kind of things, be they in the soil, or in tubs, pots and troughs. Consider size as well – do you have a ranging outdoor space or are you more limited? In

reality, it doesn’t matter – just because a space is small it doesn’t mean it’s hard to ﬁnd things to grow in it. It’s easy to grow salads in a small space, tomatoes in summer, even

dwarf fruit in large pots. No, you won’t be self-sufﬁcient, but you know that you grew it. So being realistic about what’s in front of you, and making the best of it, is crucial. The same goes for when the evenings begin to get darker so much earlier. Plants begin to wither, ﬂowerful gardens sink into greens and browns, and there’s a feeling of packing up for winter, waiting for the spring for colours to begin to return.

One very obvious way to extend the days in your garden in autumn/winter is to add some subtle lighting. I don’t have much lighting in my garden but I try to use what I have to maximum effect. There are some up the sides of a path, and others that highlight things - I’ve got a tall hedge with urns in front with a couple of lights in them, and they look wonderful. They go on in the evening for a couple of hours and then switch off at 10. I loved looking at those urns – it’s not over the top but it keeps the garden alive and to be enjoyed at night. Dare I say it, it’s almost romantic, which is very ‘me’ of course!
