Ringwood Nail Bar and The Cellar Fridays Cross, Ringwood left became a dyer and cleaners, later the Gas Showrooms. It is now Ringwood Nail & Beauty salon, 1-3 Christchurch Road.

The tall three-storeyed building now 5-7 Christchurch Road became Sid Deedman’s cycle shop. In his day he had a large advertisement for Rudge bicycles painted on the first floor wall between the two windows. In the late 20th century the Fridays Cross traders erected a painted image of a stage coach over the white background until it fell down in a storm several years ago. This old photo was taken at Fridays Cross around 1900 and shows the Crown Hotel on the left with Kingsbury & Co grocery shop on the right. Walter James Kingsbury and family are listed as living at this shop in the 1861 census. W.J.Kingsbury was the second son of grocer John Biles Kingsbury, whose own shop was in what is now Pets Corner 9 High Street, as described in the February/March 2021 edition of Roundabout Ringwood. Originally John and Walter Kingsbury were in partnership together until in 1862 they dissolved the partnership and Walter set up business on his own at Fridays Cross. Harrod & Co’s Directory of 1865 describes him as ‘a wholesale & retail grocer, tea dealer, tallow chandler, cheese factor and importer of fresh provisions.’ [A tallow chandler was a maker or supplier of candles]. The shop continued under this name long after Walter’s death in 1873, surviving into the early 20th century.

Local amenity group The Ringwood Society then suggested it should be replaced with a new image to mark the historic location of Fridays Cross. They chose a traditional design which members felt reflected the acorns on the round metal seat nearby. In 2018 Ringwood Town Council implemented this design, which has now become a distinctive feature of the area. On the ground floor 5-7 Christchurch Road is currently The Cellar cheese and wine bar with offices above.

Statement Statham Actor Jason Statham on an all-action career that continues to thrive. Jason Statham returns to our screens in 2021 with one, perhaps two new movies. Spy 2 – the follow-up to the 2015 original – is testament to the actor pursuing a more comedic line of drama as he moves into his ﬁfties, while Wrath of Man delivers a steely, police-driven drama that sees our main man fully back in combat mode. “This is what I do, and I’m proud of that,” he says. “I keep myself in shape, I deliver in my roles and I move on to the next thing. “I will always commit fully to a project, which is why I’ve always done my own stunts over the years. I think if you’re going to be that person and that character, then embrace it fully.” For so long, Statham has been the perfect blend of smouldering, moody, conﬁdent and confrontational. He has styled his own persona very much around the types

of characters he plays in Hollywood blockbusters. Yet whether a gun-toting criminal on the streets of London, a Bond-esque spy circumnavigating the globe, or simply the man who performs wheelspins better than even Vin Diesel, Statham, who is married to model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is constantly striving for the next big one. Yet would he ever stray away from the action genre… could he ever perhaps entertain something as leftfield as, say, a period drama? “Listen, the guys who put that stuff together make very good films,” he laughs. “I mean, the attention to detail is incredible, and the scriptwriting is on another planet. I just don’t know if they’re going to offer me a part in one of those films! “That said, I don’t have the refusal wall up for anything, I’m

open to all quality stuff, if somebody wants to send a great romantic comedy my way, I’ll be the first to read it.” So it seems that Statham the action man will continue for a good while longer. “That’s just the type of actor I am. I would struggle to do the cerebral, emotional stuff – that’s not to say I’m not like that at home, and around the people I love, but it’s true, I do have a certain image on film now and I’m happy with that.” It’s an image brought about by his father’s incredible encouraging spirit, and harnessed through his attempts to qualify for the Olympics as an expert diver. “I came third in three Olympic trials, I came close. So close. Every board qualifies the first two divers so I was just short three times.” The fact he has excelled in a totally different profession is not just consolation, but testament to Statham’s drive to achieve. Job done.

Stars in the grass Exotic and striking in appearance, orchids can be found in a diverse range of habitats – between now and September is the perfect time to see them in full colour. Early purple orchid As its name suggests, the early purple orchid is one of the first of our native orchids to bloom, strong enough to grow in the light shade of woodland or out in the open grassland of a road verge. Even when not in flower, it is identifiable by its glossy green leaves with dark purple blotches. It remains relatively common but has declined in recent decades due to urban development and modern farming methods. When the flowers first open they have a sweet scent like honey, but once pollinated the flowers smell like the urine of a tomcat! It is thought this may be to warn insects that the flower is no longer worth pollinating. Green-winged orchid Similar in appearance to the early purple orchid, the green-winged orchid can be distinguished by its narrow, unspotted leaves and the distinctive veined hoods that sit above its flower, which give it its name. Until the advent of modern farming this orchid was one of the most widespread and common grassland species. Intolerant of artificial fertilisers and herbicides, it has disappeared from half of its historical range and is now mostly confined to nature reserves. Pyramidal orchid The pyramidal orchid is the county flower of the Isle of Wight. This orchid is easy to identify from the bright pink, pyramid-shaped cluster of flowers on top of the stem. Botanists did not appreciate the close relationship between pyramidal and green-winged orchids until scientists unravelled the plants’ DNA. The 16

association is surprising as there is very little in common about the appearance of their flowers. The pyramidal orchid, which flowers between June and August, sports a long spur containing nectar to entice moths to drink. Bee orchid The bee orchid is a master of mimicry and has evolved to look like its main pollinator – the longhorn bee. Bizarrely, this bee is rarely found in the UK so the bee orchids found here appear to be self-pollinated – the plant’s male pollen sacs drop onto the female stigma allowing self-pollination to take place. Its windborne seeds germinate freely allowing rapid colonisation of small patches of bare ground. This ability means that short-lived populations turn up in unlikely places such as on the edge of car parks. The bee orchid is, however, at its best in parched sunny habitats and can be abundant where the ground has been disturbed. When admiring orchids, please remember the immature plants that may surround the flowering spike. Avoid trampling future flowers by keeping to the paths and thoroughly checking where you put your feet.. Abi Webber

Understanding Investments:

What are investments and why should you own them? Interest rates are at all time lows. Cash accounts and NS&I savings are paying under 1% per annum, and fixed rate bonds are offering significantly lower rates on maturity. At the same time inflation is rising, being fuelled by pent up demand, low inventories, rising commodity and oil prices and restricted supply. Inflation is the most topical concern right now with some viewing recent rises as temporary, and others concerned inflation could remain high. Taking away all the views and noise, the fact remains that for retirees on a fixed income, inflation is and always has been the greatest threat to a comfortable retirement. I call it “The Silent Assassin” because at 3% per annum, prices double every 24 years. What can you do to counter these challenges? Cash/NS&I: These provide security and liquidity, albeit at low returns. Sufficient cash should be retained for any expenditure within the next 3-5 years, plus a buffer for emergencies. By keeping sufficient cash, it allows money that is invested for a sufficient time to do the job you want it to do without needing to access it. Investment Asset Classes: Fixed interest bonds are low risk and earn interest that should exceed cash savings rates. However, they don’t increase with inflation and the capital value can go down if interest rates rise or on reduced demand. Inflation linked bonds offer interest and capital appreciation in line with inflation, although the purchase prices can go up and down depending on demand, usually linked to the outlook for inflation. Property has the ability to generate an income, and the capital value can appreciate in value over time, so property can be a good hedge against inflation. However, it is less liquid and can go through periods of decline. Shares or funds that invest in shares allow you to own small pieces of companies. Well run companies should increase their profits each year

and you receive a share of those profits by payment of a dividend, or Howard Goodship by the company reinvesting those profits and growing them further. Over time, share prices are linked to the company profits so if profits are rising, so should the dividends and value of the shares. In the short-term, the share price can fluctuate up and down significantly with demand and investor sentiment. These can provide some inflation protection. This is normally achieved by spreading your portfolio across a wide range of assets and carefully researched investments and managing this blend through ongoing reviews. Here’s ﬁve more interesting facts from around Hampshire which might just provide some staycationing inspiration!

Did you know that the only pony to have competed at Olympic level showjumping is buried in Hampshire? Stroller, a bay gelding, stood at only 14.1 hands high and as such was classiﬁed as a pony. Remarkably, Stroller not only competed to this standard but, ridden by jumping star Marion Coakes (later known as - Marion Mould) who won medals in prestigious competitions across the world even past the age of 20! The pony lived to the grand old age of 36 and is buried at the Barton on Sea golf club which was previously Marion Coakes’ farm. Perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings, did you know that a certain Hampshire country house was said to have inspired JRR Tolkien to write his masterpiece? The Vyne at Basingstoke has on display a special golden ring with Latin inscriptions which Tolkien was asked to evaluate in 1929, owing to his expertise in related ﬁelds. It is said that it was after this visit to The Vyne and a viewing of its precious ring that Tolkien would later publish The Hobbit in 1937! In any case, young writing minds may well enjoy an inspirational visit to this historic Hampshire gem!

Amazingly, the Round Tower, located at the entrance of Portsmouth Harbour, was built in 1418. Remarkably, it is one of the earliest known stone defences. Originally built to help safeguard the harbour from the ever-looming threat of attack from French ships, its predecessor was a strictly wooden aﬀair until it was recognised that the longstanding stone was a safer option. Even in the early 15th century, the Round Tower cost thousands and reportedly during Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, all the ships that utilised the surrounding waters were required to donate a boatful of stones to help protect the tower from the waters or else risk a ﬁne!

Did you know that remarkably the Meon Valley Water Vole Project is the only project of its type to have taken place in Hampshire? Experts agree that the water vole, often associated with Ratty, the beloved book character in childhood favourite Wind in the Willows, is one of the fastest declining mammal species. In 2013, as part of the project, more than 2,500 water vole were released back into Hampshire’s waterways which has seen a stabilising of local populations and also helped to re-establish local habitats. Have you heard the news? Hearing loss affects very many of us at some stage in our lives. We often try to ignore it, or deny it but the truth is it can be very frustrating, not only for the person with hearing loss, but also for their friends and family. Let’s Get Wild Turn your garden into a veritable paradise for the birds and the bees by creating a wildflower meadow. Simple, environmentally beneficial and stunningly beautiful. Not only is it easy to create your own little wildflower meadow, it’s also fast, meaning that any patch of land you have bare can be germinated in a matter of months. That means you could be gazing out over a carpet of poppies, cornflowers, daisies, cowslips and bluebells as summer draws to a close. Perennial flowers will flourish in uncultivated soil, whereas cornfield flowers will do better in richer earth. You can buy ready-mixed seeds which will be tailored to certain variables such as soil containing heavy clay, boggy land by the pond’s edge, or even seeds that are specifically combined to provide the maximum nourishment to bees – such pollinators include Sunflower, Borage, Evening Primrose and Corn Marigold. Make sure you thoroughly weed the soil before scattering your seeds - you need 1g per square metre of pure wildflower seeds and 5g per square metre of grass and wildflower meadow seeds – and ensure the earth remains consistently moist thereafter.

Hemp Agrimony This noble native perennial looks rather striking when grown amid other more colourful wildflower varieties. Preferring the shade, it grows tall and untamed and provides a delectable nectar for butterflies. Ox-eye Daisies Tall and gracious, these white and yellow beauties are easy to grow – they thrive in the sun – though they can also overwhelm a plot if not kept in check. Cornflowers Cornflowers bring a touch of exotic elegance to your flowerbed. Surprisingly hardy, they flower from late spring into brilliant white flowers with deep purple stamens that bees, unsurprisingly, find irresistible. Common Knapweed Though some may view it as a pest, this nonetheless brings its own rugged loveliness to your wildflower crop and also will

provide food for birds if seed heads are left over winter. Honeysuckle With its vibrant white, pink and yellow petals and unusually long tendrils, one might be forgiven for thinking this a flower from another planet, but this fragrant bloom is as British and as iconic as they come. Foxgloves Bright, abundant and beautiful with its tubular purple flowers, these are ideal for the back of your miniature flower meadow as they grow tall and regal attracting many a bumblebee.
