Pets Corner 9 High Street, Ringwood became grocers Waller & Co.

Taken in c.1988

The 1988 photograph shows no. 9 had become the premises of Chas.E.Smith, dealers in men’s work and leisure wear, camping gear and government surplus. During the 1990s it had a change of shop frontage with a front door relocated to the right-hand side when it was the offices of Woolwich building society. The door no. 7, seen on the left of all the photographs, led to a staircase to the first floor premises. In the 1970s this was used as a hairdressing salon and later as offices. During the 21st century 9 High Street became a pet shop named Pampurred Pets. In 2016 this was taken over by Pets Corner, a chain of pet shops established in Haywards Heath in 1968, specialising in food and products for cats, dogs and other small animals.

Before the 1970s, Ringwood was once full of small grocers, supplying essential dry grocery items such as sugar, tea and flour and other food items like butter, cheese and tinned goods. However many of these grocers were driven out of business by the competitive prices of the new supermarkets such as Pricerite and Keymarkets.

During the early 19th century 9 High Street was owned and occupied by one of Ringwood’s most successful grocers, John Biles Kingsbury. He also owned many properties in nearby Strouds Lane, now known as Kingsburys Lane. After his death in 1863 his widow Maria continued to live on at no. 9 until by 1878 White’s Directory shows that grocer Elijah Hunt had taken over. Sometimes we just can’t face a whole novel or autobiography. With these books, you can dip in and out whenever you have a spare five minutes. Back to Nature: How to Love Life and Save It – Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin Whether you’re an avid nature lover and wondering how to stop the catastrophic decline in biodiversity, or you’re feeling disconnected from the wild and want to reap the benefits of it once again, this is a great book to help you. There are lots of interesting titbits to digest over a coffee (ever wondered how trees communicate?) and plenty of ideas for how to take action. Dear NHS: 100 Stories to Say Thank You – Adam Kay Adam Kay brings us a series of essays and musings from a range of household names, from Malala Yousafzai to Dame Julie Walters and Johnny Vegas. Each tale is about how the NHS has stepped in to help the writer. There’s a story of a suspected heart attack that turned out to be trapped wind, several about household accidents (often involving kitchen knives) and plenty of sentimental stories to boot. Plus, all profits go to charity. Encounters: A Photographic Journey – Levison Wood Award-winning reportage photographer Levison Wood has travelled to more than 100 countries over the last ten years. Encounters brings together 140 of his images, along with text about each one. You’ll meet a young shepherd girl in Ethiopia, resourceful teenagers in the Congo, stranded nomads, fishermen in Yemen and families surviving in war-torn regions. The Repair Shop: Tales from the Workshop of Dreams If you love the TV series about expert craftspeople restoring much loved family heirlooms, you won’t want to miss the accompanying book. It goes into more detail about some of the most interesting items shown in the series, from a rusty miner’s helmet to a circus performer’s dress. It’s the book version of a mug of tea and hot buttered crumpet. Toksvig’s Almanac 2021 – Sandi Toksvig Fancy ‘An Eclectic Meander Through the Historical Year’? The main focus is on women that have been all but forgotten. There’s Begum Samru – an Indian dancer who led an army of mercenaries, Ida B. Wells – an activist and suffragist who co-founded the largest civil rights organisation in the United States, and Annette Kellerman, whose stunts including diving from 60 feet into a pool of crocodiles. There are also poems, trivia and other fascinating snippets. Sapiens: A Graphic Novel – Yuval Noah Harari et al. The original Sapiens is fascinating, but there’s an awful lot of information to take in. If you’re interested in the origin of humans, but want something a little easier to digest, try this instead. It’s the first volume in a graphic-novel adaptation of the global bestseller. Full-colour illustrations and straightforward text take the reader on a journey from the very birth of humankind. It’s absorbing, suitable for older children as well as adults and has a good spattering of humour throughout.

Foundation Awards Over £85,000 to Support Local Youngsters The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) had a really successful Trustees Meeting on Team on Saturday, with 12 trustees and 5 ambassadors in attendance. Amid all the doom and gloom the board agreed to allocate an amazing £85,800 to support local young people in the year ahead. Quite an achievement in the middle of a pandemic. Pete Thornton commented, “We are truly grateful to be able to continue to do the work we do in John’s memory. We are however very conscious that the charity is entirely the sum of its supporters. Without them there would be no JTYAF, and we are totally overwhelmed by all the kindness and generosity that has made this possible.” Young people from 19 local youth organisations are set to benefit. The charity was delighted to add West Moors Middle School as a new organisation of support and also a new John Thornton Flying Scholarship was another exciting addition for 2021.

Funds raised helping them to discover their potential, develop their talents and pursue their ambitions. The charity has also funded numerous group and whole school projects, ranging from refurbishing the library at Ferndown Upper School to funding an assistance dog at Beaucroft Foundation School. Young people are experiencing many challenges in these uncertain and difficult times and every contribution that the charity receives will help them to build a brighter future. The JTYAF has no paid staff and no premises and by keeping running costs to a minimum ensures that the maximum amount of funds raised are directly invested in young people. The JTYAF has provided a minibus for all the local schools and youth organisations for the last 5 years but the lease expires in March. Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins, plus cooling INGREDIENTS • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g caster sugar • 175g self-raising flour • 3 medium eggs • Grated zest and juice from 1 small orange, plus extra zest to decorate • 75g ground almonds • 125g ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped • Icing sugar, to dust TIP If the top of the cake starts to overbrown before the end of the cooking time, cover loosely with a piece of foil.

Get the kettle on and enjoy a slice of this delicious fruity loaf cake. 1. Preheat the oven to 170C / fan 150C / gas mark 3. Grease a 900g (2lb) loaf tin and line the base and two long sides with baking paper. 2. Place the butter, sugar, flour, eggs and the orange rind and juice in a bowl. Beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined. Toss together the ground almonds and apricots and fold into the mixture. 3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes - 1 hour 10 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar and decorated with the extra orange zest.

Understanding Investments: Pension Options at Retirement

Retirement, and the associated ceasing of the ability to earn an income, can be a scary thought and is certainly a huge decision. Understanding the effect of inflation on your income needs throughout retirement (at 3% inflation your expenditure will double over 24 years) and other significant capital requirements needs more than a “finger in the air” analysis. At Lonsdale Wealth Management, we utilize cash-flow planning tools to help clients understand whether retirement is affordable and just as importantly, sustainable. Once affordability has been identified, decisions on the most effective way to generate retirement income can be made. There are more choices than you might think! Retirement Income is divided into secure income and flexible income. Secure income would include Defined Benefit Pension Schemes, the State Pension and Pension Annuities. Flexible income includes Pension Drawdown and income from capital and investments, with rental income classed between the two, as it is secure but can be subject to void periods. You can currently access your defined contribution pension savings any time after age 55 although the minimum age is expected to increase to 57 in 2028 and remain 10 years below state pension age thereafter. You have five broad choices and for each option, 25% of your pension savings can be paid tax-free: 1. S ecure Income - Annuity Exchange your pension savings for an annuity provided by an insurance company which is then guaranteed for the rest of your life (with options including a dependant’s annuity). Annuity income is subject to income tax. 2. Secure Income - Temporary Annuity Little known but can be very attractive for those who want to retire early. Can provide a higher guaranteed income for a specific number of years (perhaps until other

pensions such as the State Pension commence) to allow the Howard Goodship balance of pension funds to remain invested. Annuity income is subject to income tax. 3. Flexi-Access Drawdown Take the income you need when you need it. The money remains invested and you draw a variable level of income for as long as your money lasts. Withdrawals are subject to income tax. 4. Cash Payment Have all your savings paid as a cash lump sum, with 75% of the fund subject to income tax. 5. Leave it for now There is no requirement to draw your savings from your pension and the fund can be passed down to a nominated beneficiary (and through different generations), often outside of your estate and therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax. The 25% tax free lump sum is lost if not taken during lifetime, but your funds can be paid tax-free on death before 75 (taxable on death after 75). As you can see, there is now significant choice available and pension savings are another tax advantageous wrapper to consider alongside other tax efficient products including ISAs. High-Tech Hygiene As we’ve become much more conscious of hygiene we’ve discovered new things to worry about – so the phones that are our constant companions could also be harbouring all kinds of unpleasantness now that we’re using them constantly. You can’t stick a smartphone in the wash, but you can sanitise it with ultraviolet light. Some UV sanitisers can kill bacteria and viruses in just thirty seconds, but even the slowest ones only need a couple of minutes. Even innocuous items such as soap dispensers can harbour germs, so if that concerns you then you might want to consider a no-touch soap dispenser. One of the most effective ways to hygienically clean things is to use a steam cleaner, which has the added advantage of cleaning without harsh chemicals. The latter are great for cleaning kitchen or bathroom tiles, ovens and surfaces, and some even come with attachments for cleaning upholstery and curtains. Just be careful what you use them on: laminate floors and steam cleaning don’t go well together, as the hot steam can warp the flooring. Steam cleaning is absolutely fine for wooden floors, tiles or linoleum. In addition to cleaning surfaces you can clean the air too. Air purifiers do a good job of removing allergens and pollutants from the air, which can be particularly helpful for people with asthma and allergies, but be wary of claims that they remove viruses: the filters in home purifiers are rarely fine enough to trap such particles. Think of these devices as a good way to remove dust, pet dander and other things that you or your family may be allergic or intolerant to.

QUIRKY BY MICA BALE With a shakier start to the year than many could wish, Hampshire still remains one of the most beautiful and historic counties in all of Britain. From a racecourse with an interesting heritage to a story of survival in the face of pestilence, here are ﬁve more fascinating facts from around the county.

Did you know that Tweseldown Racecourse was purchased by the British Army in 1854 during the Crimean War for use as a training ground? The Hampshire racecourse has a heritage of interesting events, including several royal visits from non other than Queen Victoria herself when she oversaw a display consisting of more than fifteen thousand troops. Several years later in 1867, Tweseldown would become an official racecourse and would later go on to host olympic events in 1948 among many other prestigious occasions. Amazingly, the Hampshire Beekeepers Association has been in existence for nearly one hundred and forty years. The Association has witnessed many changes and events, including the Isle of Wight bee disease which devastated many numbers in the area in 1904 and was said to have been the reason behind the near decimation of the British Black Bee. This disease in the bees badly affected the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Beekeepers Association and destroyed countless hives for nearly two decades. Excellently though, in the coming years, there was greater understanding of the disease and the numbers of bees and their keepers continued to grow to the thriving society it is today. 26

Did you know... The Hampshire Bat Group has reported sightings of seventeen of the eighteen species of the UK’s bat breeds? Amazingly, the Bat Group has also spotted two of some of the most rare bat breeds in the UK which can even prove elusive throughout the rest of Europe. These two rare breeds, the barbastelle and Bechstein bat have been seen in the New Forest and ongoing work is being done by the society to research and encourage more numbers in the county.

In the 1960s the coastal village of Calshot welcomed guests from the world’s most remote island Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic Ocean after a volcanic explosion forced the island’s inhabitants to seek shelter elsewhere. Although there were some social issues, causing many to return, a housing estate was built and many residents chose to stay in the Hampshire village. In memory of the kindness of the Hampshire people however, those who did return then renamed the island’s harbour after the village of Calshot!

Hampshire has often beckoned the creative talents of writers and artists and one such author was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who stayed in Emery Down for about a year to research his book, The White Company. The Sherlock Holmes author often wished to test his talents for literature in stories away from his famous detective and placed greater value on his other titles. During his stay in Hampshire, he would often be seen socialising in the village and most particularly enjoying one of the area’s many picturesque walks.

Watching for Lapwing Lapwing, green plover, peewit, tewit – this bird of many names is a spectacular sight in winter. You don’t always have to go far to spot lapwings, as in winter their numbers increase in Britain as birds flock in from the colder continent. You can see them on farmland and grassy areas in wetland sites (like estuaries, lakes and reservoirs) at this time of year, roosting balanced on one leg with their heads tucked away or feeding on invertebrates. The flight of lapwings is unusual and can be described as ‘floppy’. Their large, rounded wings move slowly, feathers spread and showing flashes of the white feathers underneath; the slow wingbeats can make them appear to float and is very recognisable feature of the lapwing. Springtime flocks dart and zigzag, these amazing aerial displays confuse predators as their flight and mixed colouring make each bird hard to focus on. At first glance their plumage may look dark and dull but look a little closer or watch it catch the light and you will see the iridescent sheen of greens and purples. Both males and females have a crest on their heads, although the male’s is longer and showier. Their other names of peewit and tewit relate to their call. Lapwings often call as they fly, the calls can sound a little robotic. Around 140,000 pairs breed in the UK, some will remain here over winter but many more arrive as their numbers more than quadruple in the winter. As they are not breeding it is 28

a good time to look for lapwing on the coast. They may be joined in their flocks by other wading birds or starlings, taking off together as dusk settles to find a safe place to roost. Unfortunately, these fascinating birds are declining, and they are now red listed by the RSPB. Changes in farmland practises has been a big factor in their decline as nests fail and food is increasingly scarce. Like other plover species, lapwing next on the ground, meaning their eggs and chicks are particularly vulnerable to predation and disturbance. There are some positive trends however. On nature reserves and other sites that are managed for wildlife there has been recent increases in lapwing populations, as more pairs manage to successfully raise chicks. It is hoped that with careful management of the land they may once again become a common bird of our countryside

“How are you getting on with that new fella of yours?” Linda had just popped round for coffee at her best friend Debbie’s house.

“That’s mine,” Linda blushed and snatched the item from Linda. “I’ll hand wash that, don’t want to send the whole load pink.”

“Great thanks,” Debbie said, stuffing a basketload of dirty laundry into the washing machine. “He’s coming round for a Valentine’s Day takeaway later, so I’d better get this lot washed, dried and pressed.”

“And did you go and visit him in hospital?” Linda asked casually.

“Crikey, he’s not got you doing his washing already?” Linda spluttered. The basket was full of men’s Hawaiian shirts, white chinos and underwear. It all looked brand new and very expensive. “Can’t he do it himself?” “He’s just come out of hospital,” Debbie said. “So I offered to help.” “Why, what’s been wrong with him?” Linda frowned.

“He told me not to. Didn’t want to worry me.” “I’ll bet.” Linda regarded her friend. Debbie had a big heart, and deserved to be happy, but some no-good bloke was taking her for a ride. The doorbell rang and Debbie jumped up to answer it. While she was gone Linda quickly opened the washing machine door, threw in the boob tube and switched the machine on. Let’s see how this charmer liked having all his designer gear turned pink. “Would you look at this!” Debbie returned with a bouquet of red roses. “Aren’t they beautiful?”

“He was having a procedure; I didn’t like to ask.” Debbie mouthed the words, “Men’s business.” “So what’s all this, then?” Linda said, holding up a pair of Bermuda shorts. “He likes his designer labels doesn’t he?”

“Stunning,” Linda remarked as she watched the washing machine quickly fill up with dark pink water.

“The clothes he had in hospital,” Debbie said. “Yes, he likes his fashion, spends a lot of money on it.”

Debbie put the flowers on the draining board and opened a small envelope. “It says ‘Sorry I lied about being in hospital.’”

Linda spotted a pair of Lycra swimming trunks. “Are you telling me he wore those in hospital?”

“I knew it!” Linda slapped the table.

“He said they had the heating turned right up,” Debbie said. “Was like the tropics, he said.” Linda frowned. She suspected that her friend was being taken for a mug. It sounded more like this new boyfriend had been for a week away in the Mediterranean. “And whose is this?” She lifted out a shocking pink boob tube.

Debbie looked up from the card, her eyes sparkling. “It says ‘I have a big surprise for you.’ I have to pack my bags because he’s just bought a villa in Spain and we’re flying out tonight.” She stooped to stop the washing machine. “I’d better change this to a quick wash or it’ll never get done in time.” “Ah yes,” Linda sipped her coffee sheepishly, “about that.”

Go green in style with our guide to creating a beautiful indoor garden in any room. House plants look amazing, adding colour, pattern, texture, interesting forms and a feeling of vibrancy. They can fill a dull corner, provide soft screening and help dampen noise. The Royal Horticultural Society reports that indoor plants have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce fatigue and headache. Intriguingly, patients in hospital rooms containing plants report decreased post-operative pain. The psychological benefits include the satisfaction of nurturing a small seedling to a healthy, mature plant, as well as the pleasure of watering, misting and pruning, while the RHS says that house plants have been shown to reduce stress levels, improve mood, increase productivity and potentially lengthen attention span. Plants make us feel good. What plants to choose? Select plants suited to homes, where it is shadier and temperature fluctuations are greater than in their normal habitat. Good examples include the spider plant, the Boston fern, several varieties of dracaena, Sansevieria trifasciata, rubber plants (ficus elastica), peace lilies (spathiphyllum), aspidistra and ivy. Succulents and cacti tend to be relatively easy to care for and come in a range of shapes and sizes. For fashion followers, the most-discussed plants on Reddit in 2020 included the pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea, hoya and peperomia. On the other hand, the world’s most Instagrammed houseplants include the Swiss cheese plant (monstera deliciosa), fiddle leaf fig (ficus lyrata), Chinese money plant, snake plant and money tree.

Where to put your house plants Generally plants need good light (but not bright, direct sunlight) and should be away from heat sources, draughts and cold. Darker rooms like bathrooms need shade-tolerant plants. Provide a stable, waterproof base, and keep harmful plants away from children and pets. Huge statement plants look incredible in hallway, living room or dining room corners, or group several plants together for a similar effect. Place smaller plants on tables or use tall planters, or put a row of small plants on a mantelpiece, shelf or window ledge, or dot them among books and vases in a bookcase. Hang them from the ceiling, stage them in steps, or pop them on wall racks. Grouping in odd numbers looks best, and a range of widths and heights looks relaxed. Opt for varying shades of leaf colours or try a more regulated appearance, and contrast leaf shapes for natural variety.
