From where I stand today, it looks like the restrictions are being lifted. Many are delighted with this, and many are a little trepidatious. Re-development of Long Lane, Ringwood AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust, Ringwood Town Council and Ringwood Town Football Club are excited to announce a partnership to develop the facilities at Long Lane, Ringwood. The three organisations are being supported by New Forest District Council, the Football Foundation and Hampshire County FA to help bring the vision into fruition, with an application for planning permission to be submitted soon. The significant investment into the re-development at Long Lane represents an opportunity to develop an excellent sporting and social facility for the town of Ringwood. The site will continue to be the home of Ringwood Town FC and will enable staff and players associated with AFC Bournemouth’sCommunity Sports Trust to be based on site. Crucially, a number of Community programmes will also be based on site and all in the one location. The phased development will comprise of: a new full size 3G artificial turf pitch (ATP), improvements to existing grass pitches, redeveloping the car park and a new pavilion with changing rooms. Speaking about the redevelopment and partnership with Ringwood Town, Head of Community Steve Cuss said: ‘This is a hugely exciting and innovative development for the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust. Being able to bring together a number of community programmes at a dedicated site, will ensure that we continue to engage the local community and offer programmes from young to old.

Ringwood Nail Bar and The Cellar Fridays Cross, Ringwood left became a dyer and cleaners, later the Gas Showrooms. It is now Ringwood Nail & Beauty salon, 1-3 Christchurch Road.

The tall three-storeyed building now 5-7 Christchurch Road became Sid Deedman’s cycle shop. In his day he had a large advertisement for Rudge bicycles painted on the first floor wall between the two windows. In the late 20th century the Fridays Cross traders erected a painted image of a stage coach over the white background until it fell down in a storm several years ago. This old photo was taken at Fridays Cross around 1900 and shows the Crown Hotel on the left with Kingsbury & Co grocery shop on the right. Walter James Kingsbury and family are listed as living at this shop in the 1861 census. W.J.Kingsbury was the second son of grocer John Biles Kingsbury, whose own shop was in what is now Pets Corner 9 High Street, as described in the February/March 2021 edition of Roundabout Ringwood. Originally John and Walter Kingsbury were in partnership together until in 1862 they dissolved the partnership and Walter set up business on his own at Fridays Cross. Harrod & Co’s Directory of 1865 describes him as ‘a wholesale & retail grocer, tea dealer, tallow chandler, cheese factor and importer of fresh provisions.’ [A tallow chandler was a maker or supplier of candles]. The shop continued under this name long after Walter’s death in 1873, surviving into the early 20th century.

Local amenity group The Ringwood Society then suggested it should be replaced with a new image to mark the historic location of Fridays Cross. They chose a traditional design which members felt reflected the acorns on the round metal seat nearby. In 2018 Ringwood Town Council implemented this design, which has now become a distinctive feature of the area. On the ground floor 5-7 Christchurch Road is currently The Cellar cheese and wine bar with offices above.

Carver’s Clubhouse releases its ‘Summer of Play’ activity programme August to give adults and children tips to improve their game. Activities are available either free or at a very low cost to ensure that all local families can take part.

Carvers Clubhouse, a community centre in Ringwood, has released a special summer holiday activity programme which has been inspired by a national campaign to give children the time, space, and freedom to play this summer as COVID restrictions are eased. The programme, which runs for the school summer holidays, features organised and informal opportunities for play and fun. For example, you can come along and test your inner clown when the Steamship Circus visits on the 6 August for a Circus Skills Day. Or laugh along with Krazy Kev on the 13 August who will be performing his comedy and magic show.

Even if you do not want to take part in the activities you can come down to Carvers Recreation Ground and enjoy the skate park, play area, new football goals and table tennis table. The Clubhouse has a popular community café and during opening hours (generally 10am to 5pm) you can borrow sports equipment (footballs, rugby balls, table tennis bats and balls, even a rounders set) or outdoor games such as Jenga and there are toys to keep young children and toddlers entertained. Carvers Clubhouse is owned and managed by Ringwood Town Council and is situated on Carvers Recreation Ground, a short walk from the Town Centre.

Hidden Away - Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust The summer brings with it a profusion of wildlife in many of the wilder areas of the countryside. From blooming wildflowers to the sounds of birdsong, there is so much going on. But many of our mammalian friends are out of sight out of mind, especially in the summer as they hide away in the dense vegetation. This week, we take a look at what some of our furry friends are up to at this time of year. Feeding up Hazel dormice might be most familiar as an autumnal species, getting ready to bed down for winter. They wake in spring, and from then on, it’s a race to pile on the pounds for the colder months. During summer, they are at their most active, clambering around hedges and trees, looking for their favourite food. Already cute, one of the biggest components of their summer diet is flowers. Honeysuckle and bramble flowers make up a significant proportion of their diet before they turn to nuts in the autumn.

(meaning they come out at dusk, in twilight). The long summer evenings mean a much better chance of spotting this species compared to the winter. Badgers are no exception. Their cubs will be around four months old now and making the most of this time to play. By July, most will be weaned and starting to become independent. The cubs will roll around with each other, play ﬁghting and chasing their siblings around the sett. Small mammals, like mice and voles, are essential food sources for wildlife higher up the food chain. Healthy habitats contain plenty of food for species low down in the food chain. Increases in their populations lead to increases in predators like large mammals and birds of prey. Creating interlinked corridors for mammals to breed and hunt in is vital and restoring and conserving these habitats is at the heart of the Trust’s work.

Up in the air Bats are giving birth at this time of year, usually to a single pup which the mothers nurse in a maternity roost. The young bats take about four weeks before they start to learn to ﬂy, growing quickly in that time. Some will still be suckling from mum until August. To help keep a steady supply of milk for their young, the adult bats must eat thousands of tiny insects every night! Understanding Investments: Personal Pensions (including SIPPs) For many people, the value of their pension savings can be their most significant asset, alongside their home. However, pension savings are often neglected due to perceived complexity surrounding pension rules, investment choice and clients accruing multiple schemes throughout a working life. Whilst there are different types of pensions (Final Salary and Money Purchase), and a number of flexible choices once retirement is reached, I want to focus this article on three of the most important things to consider with money purchase schemes during the accumulation stage (usually whilst working and contributing) that will influence the value of your pension at retirement; Contribution Level, Investment Content and Charges. 1: Contribution Level: Auto-enrolment now obligates an employer to contribute a % of earnings to an employees’ pension (subject to certain earnings limits). In addition, an employee (or a director and the self-employed) can contribute an amount linked to their earnings. The incentive to do so currently available from the government is that they provide tax-relief on personal contributions, so a basic rate taxpayer saves 20% tax on their pension contributions, a higher rate taxpayer 40% and additional rate 45%. Company directors can also make pension contributions from their company rather than paying them personally which can save the company corporation tax and the director income tax. There are maximum annual allowance limits applicable. 2: Investment Content: Once the money has been paid into the pension scheme, it should usually be invested in an attempt to earn a higher return than cash and aim to preserve and grow the real value of the pension fund (the value after inflation). Different pension schemes will offer a variety of investment options; some will offer a wide investment choice and others can be more

restricted. Modern plans usually provide a wider range, with SIPP’s Howard Goodship usually offering the greatest choice. The level of investment risk should be considered on an individual basis, linked to your attitude to risk, the time left before reaching retirement and your overall financial situation (including other savings and investments). It should be remembered that investment returns are not guaranteed. 3: Charges: Since the introduction of auto enrolment, competition amongst pension providers has increased and charges have reduced. This is great news for clients but whilst some older schemes have adjusted their charges accordingly, many haven’t. The amount you pay in charges will have a direct impact on the value of the pension fund at retirement and the longer the money remains invested, the bigger the impact on your pension value. In combination the right level of contribution, invested in high quality investments with reasonable charges can be a powerful formula to help provide you with a financially secure retirement. Ringwood School - £2.8 Million of Funding Success Ringwood School has been successful in securing £2.8 million of grants to carry out major improvement works to school buildings under the Government’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) programme. £2.2 million will be spent on a brand-new School Hall and associated works including signiﬁcant improvementsto existing student dining facilities, and £0.6 million will be spent on a thermal upgrades and re-rooﬁng works to the Science and Technology buildings. The School has worked on the funding bid with Ringwood based consultantsKendall Kingscott. The CIF programme is an annual round of bidding under which academy schools and colleges can apply for funding for the upkeep and improvement of their buildings and to fund expansion projects for schools that have been rated good or

outstanding by Ofsted. Leanne Symonds, Headteacher said: “Ringwood School is an oversubscribed, successful and high achieving school, but the facilities we are able to oﬀer our young people at lunch time are much too crowded and insuﬃcient. This successful application will enable us to build a new facility large enough to accommodate the daily needs of a busy school, but will also ensure we can providea safer, light, warm space to eat in a civilised manner thus providing outstanding opportunities for physical, social and emotional development of all students and the best conditions for their learning”. The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Isn’t it great to go for a walk in our luscious green, English countryside! Daichi highly recommends walking to clear away the mental cobwebs and stresses of the week. He loves to bounce his way to the destination, always with a picnic, coffee at the ready and a big stealy white smile. We love him. This time he took us to Pamphill near Wimborne in East Dorset. There are bluebell woods here which can look amazing at the right time of the year. In 2018 the National Trust planted 2500 trees at the Abbott Street Plantation, which you can see on the map. This included oak, hazel, scots pine, sweet chestnut and wild cherry trees. The intention is to extend the ancient woodland for future generations, so they continue to enjoy our wonderful wildlife and views. How cool is that. Some of the trees in the woodland have been standing there for 300 years (and I feel old…) and are struggling with disease and stress, so there was a fence to keep us heavy humans out and allow the trees some space, peace and quiet to recover. Maybe there is a lesson to learn there… certainly

In addition to that some of the dead trees, known as “standing deadwood” have been deliberately left where they have stood for hundreds of years. These old, decayed trees, which still have a wonderful presence about them, are great for wildlife and create a haven for woodpeckers, insects, tree creepers and a large variety of fungi. They make it a heathy habitat for other species to thrive. I love nature and there is definitely something very magical about this woodland. I take my hat off (or Daichi’s bonnet) to the National Trust who are preserving this delightful area. We really enjoyed our meanderings. Once out of the sheltered wood, we walked to more open ground, across fields and climbed over stiles to follow the walk we had found on our phone. Modern technology working with ancient woodlands and a beautiful leisurely stroll. The walk is about an hour long, though we were walking pretty slowly really, so for those who like more of a hike you could probably do this in half an

hour! We like to amble, take our time and breathe in the fresh air. We saw buzzards, deer, horses and walkers with dogs. The view further on the trail is amazing. Rolling hills and farmhouses. One thatched cottage in the distance had had a fire and was burnt to a cinder, all black and eerie looking. I do not know the story there, but I certainly hope everyone was safe. Back at the Pamphill Green car park we decided to visit St Stephen’s Church, which is the Bankes Family Church. The Bankes family owned Kingston Lacy Country House and this Church was built in memory of Walter Ralph Bankes who was a Lord High Admiral of Purbeck. I immediately noticed there were no gravestones. Call me odd, but as a teenager and later at university I used to walk around Churches and Graveyards to read the tombstones. I found it fascinating to see who was alive in the area then, how long they had lived and see family members all together. Pure enchantment. To others I was seen as a little ‘mad’ I think! Well, it is a good job we are all different I say. So, immediately seeing there were no gravestones to read, I looked it up on good old Google and found that land has to be consecrated in order to have a burial ground. Holy water, which has been blessed by a priest is used to make the land sacred and only then can

Daichi waited in the woods the land be used for burials. This land was obviously not consecrated and thus no tombstones to read. Churches do have a certain atmosphere about them, especially chocolate-box looking ones like this one. Idyllic. This Church was built in 1907 after seven years of construction. The previous Church had been left to go to ruins and unlike the dead trees in the woods, a broken-down, dilapidated Church does not aid others in their survival, so a new one had to be built. Well, they did a very good job I have to say. All this countryside walking and fresh air meant that refreshments were in order. The Vine Inn Pub is a very short drive down the road and as it was a lovely evening, we decided to sit in the garden there and have a drink. A great end to a very simple, relaxed afternoon. After all the chasing around of the week it was delightful to sit and listen to birds singing, taste the fresh night air and chill out. Daichi watched us with an equally lazy smile. Wherever you live there is countryside not that far away. If you are able to get out and about, all you need is walking shoes and a jacket just in case. Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

There is an alternative.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish. A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Isn’t August the perfect time of year to enjoy Hampshire in all its glory? Long days and hopefully nice weather throughout the month, what could be better than delving into the county’s most interesting facts in celebration of the last of the summer in our own county? From an interesting royal connection to Winchester’s watermill to an American showman, here’s another handful of quirky facts from around Hampshire!

Did you know that the British Deer Society was founded in 1963 and is based in Fordingbridge? The society was formed after it became apparent following the Second World War that deer populations were considerably larger than had been estimated. Originally known as the Deer Group within the much larger Mammal Society, the aim was to maintain safe numbers and strong herds and even today, decades later, the society works hard to educate and ensure a safe future for Britain's deer herds.

Perhaps unsurprisingly it was in Hampshire that the first powered flight took place. Lasting only a few seconds, the man behind the machine was American showman and cowboy who claimed to be the long lost son of Buffalo Bill, Samuel Franklin Cody. Although the alleged connection was not true, it is certainly true that Samuel Cody beheld his namesake’s talent for showbusiness and it was with the flamboyance of a showman that he took to the skies above Farnborough Common in 1903. Cody went on to contribute greatly to aviation in Britain however tragically, just a few years later, Cody flew once again at the common, only to suffer a crash that made him one of the first people to die in an aviation disaster.

Hampshire’s census records always provide a fascinating insight into the county’s history. However, did you know that some of the most common names by population in 1881 included the less than usual surnames of Tier, Urry and Tolfree which amazingly had origins meaning ‘someone who saddled horses for women?

Interestingly the factory was renowned for its development for a smokeless powder used by many estates throughout the country for sporting purposes. Amazingly the small Hampshire village would become the centre of the largest nitro-compound gunpowder factory and in later times a whopping three quarters of the world’s annual gunpowder consumption for sport all hailed from Fritham!

Sway Bowmen History Sway Bowmen Archery Club was established in 1985 primarily as a Target Archery Club within the New Forest National Park. Our ﬁrst venue was at Sway Football Club, but as membership increased we moved to Skanlands Farm where we held our ﬁrst Club championships.

During the winter months we also shoot indoors at Brockenhurst College on Wednesday evenings.

With membership increasing further Sway Bowmen moved to a more permanent site on Birchy Hill where we stayed until 1999.

We have about 120 members with ages ranging from juniors up to 75+ years old. We have archers of all abilities from beginners up to archers of international standard.

Our ginal move was to Great Break Field on the outskirts of Sway Village. We are fortunate to have unlimited access to our range which the Club now owns. Our members enjoy a full outdoor season of shoothing and social activities as well as our annual Mushroom Shoot which is enjoyed by Archery Clubs across the region.

Sway Bowmen are now in the enviable position of having a superb new clubhouse constructed at our range, work having now commenced.
