This has given Sue, who has owned and run these magazines for nearly 17 years now, the opportunity she wanted to spend more time with the family. Ringwood Fabrics and Kelly Eyecare 15 - 17 High Street, Ringwood In the mid-20th century 15 High Street was the location of Charter’s Stores, one of many grocers in Ringwood. At the time of the late 1960s photograph it was Tyler’s wine merchants. By the 1970s it had become Brian’s Fabrics, supplying dress, curtain and furniture fabrics and haberdashery. Today it is known as Ringwood Fabrics, owned by Angela Cork since 2002. She has expanded the business to include knitting wools plus a wide range of all kinds of sewing requirements.

he frontage of these two properties appears to have been built at the same time, probably about the end of the 18th century. However the interiors of both shops are considerably lower than their entrances and the pavement outside, suggesting that they had an earlier origin. From the position of the first floor windows it seems likely that there were once probably two more which at some time have been blocked up and plastered over. The late 1960s photograph from the Ringwood Meeting House collection shows that 17 High Street was then Pennell’s tobacconists, newsagents and confectioners. The Pennell family owned several other properties in Ringwood during parts of the 20th century, including 19 and 21 High Street. 17 High Street is now Kelly Eyecare opticians, established in Ringwood in 1991. 10 Have a gently sloping beach at one edge to allow hedgehogs, birds and other non-aquatic creatures to drink and bathe, and get out easily if they fall in.

A pond is a great long-term addition to a garden but plan it before you start digging! Where to put a pond? Keep clear of deciduous trees; their leaves clog up the pond and cause methane gas to be released as they rot, which can be lethal to fish and pond wildlife. Conversely, extremely sunny, hot spots will increase the likelihood of pond algae problems.

Build in some ‘shelves’ at the sides, wide enough to hold pots or pond baskets to allow for aquatics and marginals (bog-loving plants) needing shallower water. A pond should be filled with rain water, but mains water can be used if allowed to stand for a week or so before adding plants or fish.

Choose a level site to minimise the amount of soil that needs to be shifted to create it. How to choose a liner There are three main types of pond liner: a pre-formed rigid liner (mid-price but shapes are limited); plastic available by the metre (cheap but may only last three or four years); and butyl (costly, but lasts around 30 years, and allows and any size and shape you require). What shape? Create a simple shape to use less butyl liner and underlay, and make it easier to install. Always use underlay as this dramatically reduces the risk of leaks due to liner damage. Either buy it or use old carpet underlay for flexible liners, while plenty of sand works well for rigid liners. What size? A larger pond is generally easier to maintain and should be at least 45cm (18in) deep to minimise algae and to maximise the range of plants you can grow. Adjust the pond levels at the edges before laying edging material. Edges must fit snugly in the hole to reduce the chances of damage – pack dry sand or garden soil into any gaps. Large, rounded stones at the pond edge help animals to climb out and help disguise liner edges, plus reduce the amount of soil accidentally entering the pond.

What to plant? Buy healthy and hardy pond and marginal plants that are able to withstand winter temperatures. Check the depth of water they require and how big they’ll grow. Make it safe Make sure that you explain the potential dangers of ponds to children, and consider waiting a year or so if they are too small to understand. Avoid steep, straight sides and have a graduated exit so it’s easy to get out of should someone or something fall in. Consider fitting a strong galvanised metal mesh over the entire surface. It must be strong enough to bear a child’s weight, with a small mesh size that small feet cannot go through. A small fence around the pond can be clothed with climbers or painted, and can be removed once children are older.

A self-build or commissioned camper van can offer more freedom and bespoke details than a factory unit. These are the best vans to base your design on. Camper vans are big business in the UK and it’s easy to understand their appeal. After all, once you’ve paid your initial investment, holidays become staggeringly cheap. Even staying on the most luxurious of campsites costs pennies compared with a night in a hotel room, while

The UK is awash with independent firms who specialise in converting vans into campers. Some mainstream manufacturers have got in on act game, too – just look at Volkswagen’s California. However, it’s also possible to homebuild your camper if you’ve got the time. Guides online are plentiful and easy to follow, and it can prove far cheaper than going for a third-party conversion. Plus, you’re able to specify the van to your liking. But before you start a conversion, you need a van – and these are our top five.

Fiat Ducato - The Ducato is a great choice for a motorhome conversion, and around two-thirds of motorhomes in Europe, whether coach-built or van conversion, are based on the Ducato. They are just the right size for most, offering enough headroom for an adult to stand without having too large a footprint. If you’re ordering directly from the factory, Fiat offers a specific motorhome base, with specialised tyres, a wider rear track, lower chassis and space to install water tanks. Volkswagen Transporter - The VW Camper was iconic once the rear-engined ‘splitties’ became an image of California surfer culture, and though the modern T6 is a totally different beast it still has that vibe nailed. It’s possible to buy your Transporter van in cool two-tone colour schemes or with retro alloy wheels. VW also offers a petrol engine – a rarity in this class. Ford Transit Custom - The Ford Transit has plenty going for it, and is the best-driving panel van you’ll ever find. A range of efficient diesel engines provide motive power, and few vans have such a car-like driving environment – there’s even a premium stereo and smartphone connectivity. Renault Trafic - When Renault updated the Trafic, it made sure that the interior dimensions were identical to the old model. This means that if you’re kitting out a brand-new Trafic – or its sister vans, the Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300 or Vauxhall Vivaro – you’ll be able to draw on eighteen years of camper fittings, diagrams and designs with which to fit your van out. Renault’s range of 1.6-litre diesel engines is superbly efficient, very smooth and decently powerful. Mercedes Sprinter - One of the safest vans on offer thanks to high-tech safety gear, this big brute comes in a variety of wheelbase and roof height variations so you can get the camper size you desire. It has the most premium cabin on the market, with controls and displays from Mercedes’ passenger car range. And there’s a three-pointed star on the bonnet. What could be better?

any may feel as though they missed spring and early summer, depending on the outdoor or green space available either at home or locally during the coronavirus pandemic, and whether or not they were able to venture outside and find solace in nature. With the reserve left mostly to its own devices through April and May, wildlife even here was given a little more breathing space than normal. Although the bird hides and Education Centre are closed, Blashford is still a peaceful destination for a walk, with plenty of wildlife watching opportunities even as summer is turning. Now is a welcome time of change at the reserve as some birds leave many others will be arriving. Look out for passing migrants such as Osprey, which may join us briefly to feed before continuing their long journey back to Africa. It is also worth taking advantage of the view point at the back of the main nature reserve

car park and looking to the skies in early September for the feeding frenzy performed by the hirundine above Ibsley Water before they too head south. Here swallows, swifts and martins will gather low over the lake, particularly after rain, picking off the insects that are flying over the surface of the water. As our summer visitors leave, keep an eye out for the arrival of one of our more regular winter visitors, the Great White Egret ‘Walter’. ‘Walter’ has visited for several years, usually spending the autumn and winter on the reserve and the spring and summer in France. He is identifiable by his coloured rings which were given to him as a nestling in France in 2003. With luck he will return once more! Duck numbers will also slowly begin to increase, although the usually distinctive drakes will be sporting their drabber ‘eclipse’ plumage, which makes them less conspicuous as they moult their flight feathers. This makes the male gadwall, wigeon and

shoveler harder to tell apart from the female. Now is also the time to search for the brilliant azure flashes of the kingfisher fledglings which have started to establish their own territories away from their hatching sites. You may even get a sighting of one perched on a branch on Ivy Silt Pond. Kingfishers are often heard before they are seen, so listening out for their short, sharp whistling ‘chee’ call, sometimes repeated two or three times, is a good way of knowing they are nearby. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. Understanding Investments:

The Value of Ongoing Investment Management If you own a money purchase pension, individually or via your employer, your money will be invested. If you own an investment ISA, your money will be invested. Do you know what it is invested in and how exposed your money is to investment risk? Has this been looked at and potentially adjusted since the start of 2020 (and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic)? Typically, we find people invest in a pension’s default fund when first setting up their plan and this rarely gets looked at again. Many newer schemes offer default funds with Lifestyling, which means risk is reduced automatically as someone approaches the scheme’s standard retirement age. That can work well if you plan to retire at the scheme’s retirement age AND an annuity is to be purchased. However, many clients are not so binary as to be working full time one day and stopping completely the next. Reducing investment risk too early could be damaging (especially after a severe market decline). Clients who invest in ISAs (other than cash ISAs) usually have a better understanding of where and with whom their money is invested but may only review this periodically (perhaps once a year at best). As we have recently seen, a lot can change in a year! Ongoing Investment Management is a way for your investments to be continually monitored on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Adjustments are made to maintain the correct level of risk within the portfolio and to take advantage of investment opportunities as they are identified. The foundation of investing is built on Asset Allocation. The concept is that different types of assets will go up and down at different times, so when one falls another rises and helps support the overall portfolio (picture a graphic equaliser). The 4 main asset classes are cash, fixed interest, equities and property so these will be held in a “multi-asset” portfolio in varying proportions depending on the level of risk (and therefore

We often hear fashion journalists declare that “50 is the new 30”. These days it certainly seems that the stereotypes of old age we grew up with are no longer valid. Improvements in healthcare, better fashions for older people and increased opportunities for leisure and enjoyment have combined to keep many of us looking and feeling more youthful than our parents did. “40 is the old age of youth, 50 is the youth of old age” goes the old saying, but veteran fundraisers such as Captain Sir Thomas Moore (better known as ‘Captain Tom’) and Dabirul Choudury ably demonstrate that today’s 50-year-olds could be looking forward to half a century or more of life. Celebrities turning 50 When actor Matt Le Blanc became a quinquagenarian, he made no attempt to hide his feelings: “It sucks. There’s no way to sugarcoat it. You kind of go, wow, where does the time go? I feel like I just turned 40.” Happily, film star Julianne Moore has managed to be a little more philosophical about reaching her half century milestone birthday: “The thing about 50 is that you’ve clearly reached a point where you have more of your life behind you than ahead of you, and that’s a very different place to be in. You’re thinking, ‘I’ve done most of it.’ I don’t like that feeling. But it makes you evaluate your life and go, ‘Am I doing what I want to do? Am I spending my time the way I want?’” Shakespeare’s take on old age From the age of 50 onwards we enter what

As Shakespeare lived at a time when bubonic plague was rife and the average life expectancy was just 35 years, living to a ripe old age wasn’t an option for many. These days we may enjoy higher standards of hygiene and healthcare, but the arrival of Covid-19 has been a reminder that as human beings we are all still susceptible to disease. Turning 50 has a new resonance within the Covid-19 crisis, as it underlines the fact that old age is accompanied by increasing risk and vulnerability. Remarkable recoveries Antibiotics have conquered bubonic plague, and in the same way coronavirus will almost certainly be defeated, either by a vaccine, an effective track-and-trace system or a combination of both. Meanwhile there have been some remarkable recoveries from Covid-19, including 106-yearold great-grandmother Connie Titchen from Birmingham, who successfully fought off coronavirus. Connie Titchen’s granddaughter Alex Jones told Sky News that her grandmother had led a “really active life,” with hobbies that included dancing, cycling and playing golf. After avoiding two world wars and the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918, Connie is a triumphant survivor. So whatever you may feel about turning 50, it seems the answer is not to fear what might happen, but to take care of ourselves and enjoy each day as it comes.

As the year begins a new phase of life, Hampshire’s already fascinating history continues to write new chapters. From inspiring the mind of the literary genius who brought Lord of the Rings to millions of avid readers to an interesting connection with William the Conqueror, here’s ﬁve more quirky facts that have already been written in the county’s story.

Did you know that William Gilbert Grace, arguably one of the most important and talented cricket players in history, once played a game in Appleshaw? The cricket legend was not only considered one of the very best players of the sport but was also fundamental in improving the game and applying diﬀerent rules and even is said to have been one of the wealthiest cricket players despite being classed as an amateur. Have you seen the statue of King Alfred in Winchester? Also known as Alfred the Great, the king of England played an important role in the early heritage of England and indeed of Hampshire. The statue was well placed in its home at Winchester, however despite the grandeur that is seen today, the structure had less than a kingly entrance. Rumour has it that as the grand pillar upon which King Alfred now stands was in fact placed upside down. Some with eagle eyes have noticed that the pillar is noticeably wider at the top than at its base, adding belief that the pillar was indeed placed the wrong way. Nevertheless, King Alfred still stands proud, no doubt fondly overlooking his old home of Winchester.

As well as being a glorious Tudor mansion and former palace, the Vyne, located in Basingstoke, has a history of welcoming visitors whether they be royal guests or perhaps those with slightly humbler origins. One such visitor was J.R.R Tolkien who is said to have been inspired to write his famous Middle Earth stories by a particular Roman ring that had been uncovered in a ﬁeld in the county. Tolkien had been welcomed to the house by the then current owner to comment on the ﬁnd and its interesting inscription which spoke of a curse being put upon a man who had stolen the ring.

THE VYNE Interestingly, Hampshire played a little-known role in the announcement that World War I had begun. The man who journeyed to the capital to make the memorable announcement was Sir Edward Grey and he had a country retreat at Itchen Abbas used predominantly for ﬁshing. He would frequently visit Hampshire and was, in fact, a keen ﬁsherman himself and even wrote a book on the subject, no doubt inspired by his experiences in Hampshire. It was at Itchen Abbas, in the beginning of August in 1914, that Sir Grey would spend the night prior to going to London to make what would be one of the most important announcements in British history.

Another interesting snippet from Hampshire’s history comes from Fareham Creek. Aside from being one of the most picturesque areas in the town, it was

also said to have been the very site that William the Conqueror’s army landed and marched onwards to the important Saxon base in Winchester which was of course, then capital of the whole country. Of course the Saxons were noble and experienced warriors who had already endured much threat from invasion however, as the Norman conquest would testify, the rest is history.

Taking the sting out of nettles Thanks to their sting and vigorous growth, stinging nettles are muchmaligned by many gardeners and visitors to the countryside. But it has not always been this way. Historically, nettles were an important source of food, and they were also put to a great variety of other uses. They were used as an analgesic, an animal feed supplement, dye, cloth, and food wrap for cheese, fish, and meat. Even today you can find nettle listed as a key ingredient on the supermarket shelves on anything from shampoo, to cheese, to beer! Young nettle tops (picked from early spring to early summer) really are delicious. Steamed or simmered, like any green vegetable, the taste and texture of cooked nettles is similar to spinach and they can be substituted for it in any recipe. Full of vitamins and minerals, particularly iron, nettles are a cheap and readily available “super-food”. True to the old adage, you just need a firm grip (or gloves!) to avoid the stinging hairs when you pick them, and the cooking process will do the rest so you can enjoy their taste and goodness without worrying. You will need to pick a lot of leaves as, just like spinach, they reduce in volume when cooked. Only pick the young leaves at the top of the plant before it has gone to seed. Stinging nettles support at least 40 different species of insect, including some of our favourite and familiar butterflies. Peacock, red admiral, small tortoiseshell, comma and painted lady butterflies all have caterpillars whose only, or main, source of food is the nettle.

These caterpillars, along with the aphids and other insects that feed on nettles, sustain our woodland and garden birds throughout the spring and early summer. Later in the year, small, seed-eating birds including chaffinches, bullfinches and house sparrows all benefit from the thousands of small seeds that each nettle plant produces. As well as giving these direct benefits to wildlife, nettles can be used by gardeners in the know to make their own nitrogen-rich nettle fertiliser. Simply half fill any watertight container with nettles, top it up with water, give it an occasional stir, and wait! After a few days it will start “brewing” – try adding some rosemary to offset the offensive smell. After three or four weeks of bubbling, strain off the solids to the compost heap and dilute the remaining liquor at one part nettle fertiliser to ten parts water, and your garden plants will love it! Oceanarium Bournemouth Re-opens! The Oceanarium Bournemouth, has finally been able to re-open on Monday 6th July after 15 weeks of closure. During this time, staff has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the premises is safe to welcome back visitors without compromising the experience. A few changes have been made to the offer to allow social distancing; however all the Oceanarium’s collection of aquatic animals can still be viewed and enjoyed including Penguins. Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospice charity is seeking volunteers to help out at its friendly high street shops. The charity’s twelve shops rely on volunteers throughout the week, and are looking for till operatives to serve customers and keep them informed about the charity’s work. Volunteering has lots of benefits from building confidence to reducing stress and is a great way to make friends and have fun. Liz Thompson, Volunteer Co-ordinator for Julia’s House, said. “You don’t have to have experience to be a volunteer at Julia’s House as we provide all the training you will require. You just need to be friendly, reliable and have the confidence to talk to our customers and make them feel welcome. It’s a great feeling to be supporting your local community and will make all the difference to the children and families we care for locally. We would love to hear from anyone who has a few hours to spare.” Julia’s House is a local charity dedicated to supporting the families of children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. It relies on public donations, fundraising and legacies for 95 per cent of the money needed to run its vital service. The charity has two hospices – one in Devizes and one in Corfe Mullen, in Dorset. For those of us accustomed to the rat race, lockdown offered a very different way of life. And after several weeks trapped at home, many of us got used to seeing a different version of ourselves. With no workplace to attend, no one to visit and nowhere to go except the local park, it made sense to dress casually and ditch our usual make-up routines. According to a recent report commissioned by the British Beauty Council, we spend over £3 billion a year on cosmetics. Depending on whether you buy low-priced items or top-of-the range brands, you could save between tens and hundreds of pounds by cutting down on the amount of make-up you regularly buy. However, if the thought of going cold turkey from cosmetics makes you nervous, there are a number of tricks and techniques you can use. In order to stay looking and feeling healthy it will be essential to cleanse and moisturise your skin and keep your hair conditioned and neatly cut. But apart from that, you’ll be surprised at how much time and money you can save. What’s more you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that your look – although it may have required a little help to achieve – is pretty much just as nature intended.

When a member of the online global community Reddit asked the question “Non-British people of Reddit, what about Britain baffles you?” they received almost 40,000 comments in response. Here are five things about British culture that particularly puzzle non-Brits: 1. Sarcasm The British are famous for their sarcastic turn of phrase and a recent YouGov poll asked a group of Brits and a group of Americans to interpret the meaning of various well-known expressions and phrases. While most members of the British group took the expression “with the greatest respect” to have pretty much the opposite meaning, more than half of the American group took it at face value. One Reddit member, shocked at the way her British boyfriend spoke to his family members, wailed: “They’re so rude to each other. FOR FUN.” 2. British nosh Food is also an area that causes misunderstanding and controversy. Watching The Great British Bake Off, American Britt Rivera was shocked to find that a Yorkshire pudding wasn’t actually a pudding, tweeting “Yorkshire pudding is a little bread bowl, not a yogurt-like dessert?”

and journalist Jessica Pan describes how she sensed growing resentment amongst her English colleagues after regularly refusing their offers of tea: “I might as well have said ‘I do not want to be part of your society’ or ‘Your tea is gross and so are you.’ That’s because in Britain, I soon learned, rejecting a cup of tea is like rejecting a gesture of friendship.” 5. Our many names The many different names we use to describe our island nation has also caused a good deal of confusion, with some overseas observers unsure whether to call us Great Britain, the British Isles, the British Islands, the United Kingdom or just plain old Britain. To confuse things even further, the UK’s official name is the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’. During our long and colourful history, British people have absorbed the best bits from several different cultures, so perhaps it’s not surprising that such a melting pot of habits and customs continues to cause bewilderment. It’s clear that our culture is seen by others as eccentric, weird, confusing – even a tad annoying – but it’s equally clear that we Brits have no intention of changing our ways for anyone.

With the exception of Australia and New Zealand, Britain is one of very few places where Marmite is actually enjoyed. Reddit users have conducted their own opinion poll on the famous spread, with one Slovenian contributor commenting: “I remember my first experience with Marmite was so terrible. Someone brought that thing to our house and I tried it with a spoon ... so disgusting!!” 3. UK accents According to the British Library, we have almost eighty different accents and dialects in the British Isles, so perhaps it’s not surprising that this was another frustration for overseas Reddit users. “So many accents. People fifteen minutes away having another accent,” one moaned. 4. There’s a world of window fashion available for homes these days, so why not consider a few different options? Your windows are a noticeable element of your home’s exterior. Inside they are the sources of natural light that frame your view and provide security and cosy, quiet, draught-free rooms. For most houses double-glazed windows are the norm, though some homes have triple glazing for better energy efficiency. These windows are sealed units comprising two or three sheets of low-emissivity glass, which reflects heat back into the home but allows light through from outside. Between the glass layers is either air or an inert gas, and the frames are uPVC (plastic), wood, metal or a mixture of materials (composite). Nowadays even standard uPVC windows are available in a range of colours and textures. Graham Lindsay, managing director of Weru UK, which manufactures a range of high quality, hightech, triple-glazed windows and doors, has seen a rapid decline in the demand for plain white. Anthracite Grey is a very popular colour and more bespoke unusual shades, edging towards beige greys, have appeared recently. Standard uPVC windows are seeing competition from metal-framed and composite windows, says Lindsay. Not only can the latter be powder coated in more than 5,000 different shades, but their inherent strength and stability makes them ideal for contemporary homes requiring very large panes of glass. Aluminium products are driving the growth along with hybrid solutions that deliver superb quality and unrivalled thermal and acoustic properties. Suit your choice of window to your property style, and, while metal and hybrid frames are perfect for contemporary homes, caution is advised in coastal areas, warns Lindsay, as a coastal location will offer more risk of metal corrosion. If you own a period home, windows must be sympathetic. Slate grey, along with Farrow & Ball-type colours, would be deemed popular with planning and conservation departments. In listed buildings, windows have to be made in timber and replicate the original look. Other window choices include timber on the inside with no-maintenance aluminium on the outside, the currently highly fashionable steelframed (or Crittall-style) window, and even double- or triple-glazed windows incorporating Venetian or pleated blinds between the panes of glass, known as ‘integrated’ or ‘interstitial’ blinds. Step Up For 2,500-Mile Charity Challenge Wessex Cancer Trust is inviting supporters to step up for its 2,500-mile challenge - by walking the distance between its support centres 20 times - at Walk for Hope 2020. The cancer charity’s flagship fundraising event, which was due to be held in the New Forest in June, returns in a different format this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday 6 September, walkers will come together virtually to clock up the target mileage as a team by completing 20 laps of a route which links the charity’s four support centres in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. You can do your bit by signing up to walk five, ten or 20 miles, and you can do it on your own or with friends and family, at your own pace and wherever you choose. Charlotte von Sicard, Wessex Cancer Trust’s regional community manager, said: “Many of our Walk for Hope participants have or have had cancer, so although social distancing measures are easing, we know it’s still a really anxious time for some people and we didn’t feel it would be responsible to plan for a large gathering. Even though our walkers can’t be together physically this year, we’re still all in this together, so Walk for Hope is the perfect way to unite and work as a team to cover 2,500 miles! Last year 300 people took part and together they raised £50,000 which has made a huge difference to the lives of local people. Please help us to complete 20 laps

around our support centres and make 2020 the biggest and best Walk for Hope yet!” King of the Jungle and Wessex Cancer Trust’s patron, Harry Redknapp, said: “It’s been a tough few months for everyone, but cancer doesn’t stop and throughout the pandemic Wessex Cancer Trust has kept its services going for anyone who needs it. This is despite not being able to raise money by holding outdoor events. Walk for Hope is normally its biggest fundraiser so it would be fantastic to see as many people as possible out walking in their local areas. Let’s raise as much money as we can for people who really need it.” You can register at www.walkforhope.co.uk and set up your fundraising page. You can also link your Strava or FitBit to it. There’s also a fundraising leaderboard to help you monitor your progress and compete with friends and family. Registration is £10 with a fundraising goal of £100 per person. Entrants receive an oﬃcial Walk for Hope t-shirt, a fundraising pack, a training and event guide, and membership to a Facebook group where they can meet other participants and share fundraising and training tips. Wessex Cancer Trust uses all of the money raised to provide practical and emotional support to anyone living with cancer in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. The event is being sponsored by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors.
