A decade of devotion William and Kate celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. The decade William and Kate have spent together has been significant not just for the arrival of three children, but the dawning of a new and rather troubled era of royal life where the groom’s own brother has fled the nest of the Windsors. The marriage ceremony for took place at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. It was overseen by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, in front of the families of the bride and groom, as well as members of foreign royalty, diplomats, and the couple’s chosen personal guests. The costs of the wedding itself were borne by the royal family and the Middletons themselves, with a guest list totalling 1,900 people. A third of those went on to a royal luncheon, with a privileged final 300 attending an evening dinner hosted by the Prince of Wales. In terms of the stats behind the day, over two million people lined the streets to get a glimpse of the happy couple as they made their way to and from Westminster Abbey. Their new titles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were

announced by the Queen at 8am on the day of the wedding; while the ﬂower budget alone was estimated at half a million pounds (that’s a third more than the wedding dress). In the years that followed the couple have carried out their duties with exemplary calm and

compassion. While others have faltered, William and Kate have strode forward with humility and a connectedness to the British public. Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond says the way the couple have gone about their duties has been impressive. “I think they’re doing well at having a

normal family life. The family are continuing the tradition they’ve adopted from years ago which is to give the press some access at key moments and then hope that their privacy will be respected the rest of the time.” As far as Kate’s immersion into royal life goes, clearly the births of princes George and Louis (2013 and 2018 respectively) and Princess Charlotte (2015), have endeared her to almost every onlooker, and that’s particularly impressive in a world of 24/7 media and Twitterati. “I think there’s a lot less deference now,” says Bond. “We know a lot more about them and I think people are demanding that the royal family be much more accountable for their actions, socially and ﬁnancially. “William and Kate are absolutely the best exemplars of this and I’m sure they will go on to be in future too.”

Fridays Court 3-5 High Street, Ringwood Fridays Court is the most recently developed part of Ringwood High Street. It was built on the site of W.A. Ghrimes furnishing business, which closed in 1985. At the time of closure of this well-loved shop it was claimed that the business had been on the same site since it was founded in 1823 by the Ghrimes family. However this date does not tie in with the dates of its founder William Thomas Ghrimes who would have only been about seven years old at that time! According to the late local historian Dr. Little, William was born in Lymington, the son of an exciseman, Joseph Samuel Ghrimes. In 1816 when William was still a baby, Joseph was posted to Ringwood, probably in order to try to collect the taxes introduced by Pitt to reduce the mounting expenditure caused by the Napoleonic wars. He died in 1822, leaving his wife Sarah to bring up William, apprenticing him with a local upholsterer and cabinet maker, possibly one of the Cranston family. By 1855 William was married with a young family and had established his own upholstery business in a tall three storey house at 5 High Street. After his death in 1875 his widow Fanny continued the cabinet-making and upholstery Taken in c.1960

business until her son William Alexander took over. The business prospered and eventually expanded to include 3 High Street, the little shop next door. For the first half of the 20th century the business was still owned by the Ghrimes family, but in 1946 it was sold to Frank Trimmer, though the name W.A.Ghrimes Ltd was retained. By this time the business covered every kind of furnishing for the home, as well as furniture removals and storage. Loose covers, carpets and curtains were made to order. As Mr Trimmer grew older, more responsibility was taken on by his company director Brian Peck and Brian’s wife Joan, who acted as company secretary. In 1985 the business finally closed on Brian Peck’s retirement due to ill health and concern about the increasing competition from the new furniture superstores. It is not often that buildings in the heart of Ringwood Conservation Area are permitted to be demolished, but NFDC then decided to allow the complete demolition of the entire Ghrimes site in order to erect the new Taken in 2021 development of Fridays Court. Today the two new shops facing the High Street are i mod vape shop and travel agents Prestige Holidays.

A Force of Nature Sir David Attenborough and a career spent in nature’s microscope. Sir David Attenborough needs little introduction. From very simple beginnings as a studio hand at the BBC back in the 1950s, the explorer, naturalist, philanthropist and environmental visionary only started narrating the broadcaster’s wildlife documentaries because of a lack of a presenter.

It basically terriﬁes me that there may be a generation in future that cares less than we do, just as there were many in the past. “The truth is I’ve never wanted the plaudits or the commendation – I’ve just wanted to celebrate and assist in the preservation of this incredible world.”

Attenborough’s is a story that is now almost seven decades in the telling. “I can safely say every day has been a pleasure,” he admits. And there is little sign of the naturalist wanting to wind down. “Covid has put a halt on our ability to travel, and actually that has given me a good opportunity to reconnect with home,” he says. “I live in a beautiful semi-rural pocket on the southwestern side of London - not quite in the city, not quite out of it, but with enough to keep me in touch. in all the events, stories and anecdotes that we ﬁnd in human life. “We should all think of ourselves in the same family – nature and the human race,” he says. “We are all here, trying to

pring, with all its promise, colour and life has arrived, heralded by the crescendo of bird song and the buzzing of insect wings in the air. Migrants such as swifts, swallows and martins will have returned to our shores and will be displaying acrobatically over Ibsley Water as they feed. It is incredible to think they have travelled over two thousand miles from South Africa to reach us, with migrating swallows covering 200 miles a day at speeds of 17-22 miles per hour. Although as we go to print the bird hides remain closed, panoramic views of Ibsley Water can be had from the viewing platform which is accessible on foot through the closed main car park. Away from the water, the woodland is now a brilliant fresh green and along the footpath edges you will be able to find the new growth of the heart’s-tongue fern. Whilst walking listen out for the distinctive call of the cuckoo as

it arrives back from its African wintering grounds. Best heard in April, its call swells an evergrowing chorus which becomes noticeably louder by the day, as birds including garden, reed and willow warblers, blackcap, goldcrest and chiffchaff carve out their feeding territories and busily mate, build nests and rear their young. If you take a walk along the Dockens Water you may see the familiar bright hues of the bluebells whilst elsewhere in the woodland common dog violets and ground ivy will be flowering, adding an additional splash of blue purple to the woodland floor. In the meadow, the ox-eye daisies will be beginning to flower, alongside yellow rattle, bird’s foot trefoils and various vetch species. The ponds behind the Education Centre are the perfect spot to sit quietly and watch the air come alive with the buzzing of insect wings. On a fine day you may see newly emerged dragonflies, such as the downy emerald and emperor, and damselflies

including the common blue and blue tailed. This sunny spot is also good for passing butterflies, including brimstone, peacock, small tortoiseshell and orange-tip. For a glimpse of a grass snake, follow the path towards Ivy South Hide and take a close look at the branches on the dead hedge adjacent to Ivy Silt Pond. This is one of their favourite spots to sun themselves. All this makes Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve a wonderful place to enjoy everything spring has to offer! The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. Understanding Investments: Inheritance Tax & the Confidence to Act! The first step to effective Inheritance Tax (IHT) mitigation is to know how much money you need for your own lifetime. Once you have identified this, you will have more confidence to act and take action. I have met many people over the years who know they need to do something to reduce the value of their estate as they don’t want to pay a high IHT bill, but they fail to act in good time. It wasn’t because they weren’t aware of IHT (often they had been thinking about what to do for years), but they simply failed to have the confidence to act! I help clients by following a simple process, at the end of which they understand whether their own retirement and lifetime needs are secure and if so, are able to put in place a plan of how to mitigate future IHT on their estate. I will share this with you. 1. What do you need? We run cashflow projections (including inflation assumptions), based on your regular expenditure, predicted ad-hoc expenditure and later life planning needs such as care fees. 2. Identify surplus capital or income. The cash-flow projections help identify whether you have more capital or income that you are likely to need. We quantify what is surplus and consider the most effective way to pass this down to your families and reduce your future IHT liability. 3. Ensure Wills are up to date and tax efficient. This is done by referral to a solicitor and includes ensuring they allow the estate to benefit from all relevant IHT exemptions, including the Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB), where available. 4. Utilise annual gift exemptions. Usually you need to live for a further 7

years from the date of any gifts but there are Howard Goodship currently several exemptions which result in immediate removal from the estate. 5. Solutions to mitigate your estate’s IHT liability. Potentially Exempt Transfers (PET), Chargeable Lifetime Transfers (CLT), Trusts, packaged solutions such as Loan Trusts and Discounted Gift Trusts. There are a number of solutions available and the most appropriate will be dependent on your personal situation. 6. Insuring any remaining liability. Whole of Life cover can pay a future IHT liability and if written in trust, is paid out immediately without the need for probate. It can provide liquidity to the beneficiaries to pay any IHT liability. Sometimes, making simple changes to your current investments and planning is sufficient. For example, pensions are currently outside the estate so perhaps to stop drawing income from them and spend surplus savings instead may be favourable. We are able to do this in a variety of ways, taking account of any current COVID restrictions. What could be a better way to enjoy April than in our beautiful county of Hampshire? Surely nothing could compare to a spring in our much loved county although perhaps enjoying a delve into Hampshire’s amazing history would be the icing on the cake. Yes, from a tragic connection to the Titanic to an interesting world first, here are five more interesting facts from around the county. There is something remarkable about standing beside an ancient tree or wizened plant which has clearly seen more history throughout its life than you, your parents or even your grandparents and yet there something even more remarkable is being able to delve into the flora that existed locally decades if not centuries ago. Thanks to a certain botanist, Lady Anne Brewis, this is indeed possible. Having spent her girlhood in Hampshire and spending her latter years in the county, Lady Anne would go on to co-author a definitive documentation of Hampshire’s botany.

Did you know that Hampshire was once home to the longest building in Britain and perhaps even the world? During the Crimean War, greater attention was given to the plight of injured soldiers and so, at the bequest of Queen Victoria herself, the Netley Hospital was built. Despite her earlier support though, Florence Nightingale was appalled with the regality as opposed to the practicality the hospital displayed and publicly published her disapproval. Although the hospital was largely demolished in 1966, it was a grand display of architecture, measuring a quarter of a mile in length and oﬀering one thousand beds. Netley Hospital dwarfed every other structure in Britain and was complete with its own pier and railway. 26

Historically a royal forest and also hailed for its wood, used by the Royal Navy, did you know that even in the 21st century, the Alice Holt Forest is continuing to be part of history? The modern day replica of the Globe Theatre in London was designed to recreate the theatre and similar not only it's design but also its construction, using some methods and materials that were used in building the original. Amazingly, oak timber from Alice Holt was used to reincarnate this cultural gem all thanks to this ancient Hampshire forest Did you know that Thomas the Tank Engine was born in Hampshire? The creator of the hugely popular children's stories was Rev Wilbert Awdry from Hampshire related, "There was no doubt in my mind that steam engines all had deﬁnite personalities. I would hear them snorting up the grade and little imagination was needed to hear in the puﬃngs and pantings of the two engines the conversation they were having with one another."

The tragic Titanic disaster claimed the lives of many, including several men from Fritham. Among those who died were three brothers who were part of the larger Hickman family who had just decided to resettle in Canada. The three brothers were able to secure passage on the Titanic, with other members of their family ﬁnding alternative methods of passage. They travelled with others from the Hampshire villages, namely Percy Deacon, Ambrose Hood, Charlie Davies and William Dibden and together, their ticket cost them a remarkable £72. None of these men from Fritham were to survive the shocking Titanic disaster and some bodies were never recovered.

If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Six tips to help you get to grips with your unruly garden in no time. ONE - Focus on the lawn Your lawn is ultimately what leads your eye out into the garden, so keeping this well mown, clutter free and healthy is arguably the biggest factor in it retaining a tidy feel. To that end always try to keep borders to a maximum width of around 1.5m. Any wider than this and you may well ﬁnd their maintenance is taking up a lot of your time. TWO - A path to perfection Sometimes the issues with lawns is that they present such a wide expansive space it can be difﬁcult to know what to decorate them with. The simple answer is to add a winding path to your lawn - not only is this a one-off addition that will add structure and personality to your back garden, it would also require almost zero maintenance each year, helping the space stay tidy and uncomplicated. THREE - Crazy paving? If you want to take this a step further consider paving over larger areas of your garden. in recent years this is a trend that

appears to have subsided somewhat, but that’s not to say it wouldn’t create a nicer, cleaner, easier to maintain garden space. Wood decking has the same effect, as well as adding interesting textures and softer

base on which adults and kids can sit and enjoy their surroundings. FOUR - Evergreens every time Evergreen varieties are very handy for all-year-round foliage and variety; and adding a plentiful array of evergreens to your garden means you can avoid pruning, deadheading, staking, weeding and all those other things involved with perennials that take up valuable time that could be spent on other tasks… such a relaxing!

FIVE - What weeds? If the idea of spending hours picking out a smorgasbord of weeds from your beds doesn’t appeal then wood mulch it’s almost certainly the solution. Not only does it look great, it adds texture and colour too and is a great tool for keeping moisture in the soil, something that will come in handy when the baking sun of the summer months begins to dominate the day. SIX - Take a fake Finally, probably the best low maintenance addition of them all - fake grass. The technology these days means the look is almost as good as having a real lawn, and if you’re brave enough to take it a step further, then fake shrubs can decorate difﬁcult to reach or hard to maintain corners of your garden in a way that will need little maintenance, whilst offering big impact.
