March edition of your local Romsey and Wellow Gazette community magazine. Stephen and I took over The Romsey Gazette last September. It is a pleasure to bring you good news and great traders to your door. In fact, the Gazette is now delivered by Royal Mail every month so you can read all about local news that you may not see anywhere else. It is a vehicle to give small, local clubs, charities and societies a voice that they would otherwise not have. Please let them know about us. We would also love to hear from you, the reader. Romsey & District Railway Modellers Society (R&DRMS) The inaugural meeting under the working title of the Romsey Railway Circle was first held on 4th April 1977. At that meeting the title Romsey and District Railway Modellers Society was agreed as the name for the new club and two people from the original group are still members today, as are a few of those who attended shortly afterwards. R&DRMS meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm at the Scout Hall, Braishfield Road, Romsey and welcome new members to join us!
R&DRMS kindly donate the net proceeds from running the exhibition to local charities and last year the members chose The Romsey Young Carers as the main charity to benefit along with two others.
Romsey & District Railway Modellers Society’s annual exhibition soon became a regular feature of the calendar with its present formula, being a high quality twoday event. Over the years, we have been honoured to show many of the top layouts of their time. The majority of which having been featured in the model railway press. The most western exhibition we have attended is probably Minehead. Please see the various pages describing current layouts by visiting our website www.rdrms.com. Each year,
The aim is for a cross section of the hobby and therefore the majority of the layouts are not invited unless they have seen it running under exhibition conditions. R&DRMS look for reliability and entertainment with realistic operation unless the layout is purely for fun and there will be 10+ layouts, several with scenic sections in scales/gauges 009, OO & O, N gauge and 3mm. Additionally there with be three trade stands and the club will be doing demonstrations throughout the weekend.
Romsey & District Railway Modellers Society will stage this year’s annual exhibition on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th March at Crosfield Hall, Romsey. It may not be the largest exhibition in southern England, however R&DRMS pride themselves on the quality and, it may be said, is considered one of the best!
This exhibition is a fantastic family event that helps raise money for local charitable groups that help Romsey and the surrounding areas and is not to be missed! The admission prices are Adults £5, Children £2, including a Family Ticket £12 which is great value for money. Refreshments are available both days and parking can be found adjacent to the hall which is free on Sunday.

Hampshire Quirky Facts by Mica Bale Renowned as the birthplace of great Victorian author Charles Dickens and the home of the glorious Tudor vessel the Mary Rose, Hampshire is a county enriched by its history as much as its beautiful surroundings. From Hampshire’s very own tortoise society to a special visit from the Beatles, here are a handful of quirky facts which celebrates Hampshire as the beloved county it is. 1) Did you know that Hampshire has its very own Tortoise Society? Joining together tortoise owners from across the county as well as the Isle of Wight and further afield, the Tortoise Society aims to help support fellow owners and to help with all elements of care for tortoises including helping to provide good homes for rescued tortoises among many other functions. 2) Were you aware that one of the very first gigs the Beatles performed before bursting onto the British Rock ‘n’ Roll scene and ensuing international success was in Aldershot at the Palais Ballroom? In the December of 1961, the band performed to a Hampshire crowd numbering just eighteen in an attempt to expose them to fame. Despite the small crowd, no doubt the Beatles enjoyed their visit to Hampshire and it is even rumoured that the four sampled some local chips! 3) Interestingly Hampshire is home to a rare example of a ‘Pest House’ which was built around 1622 and is one of only a few examples that survive today. Pest houses were designed to be used as basic quarantine facilities in which those suffering from contagious diseases could reside until their recovery or more often than not, their death. Hampshire’s Pest House is located in Odiham and is not only a fascinating and rare example but also gives an insight into the social history of Hampshire’s bygone past and is even open for the public to see. 4) New Forest Ponies are world renowned for their Hampshire connection and interestingly even William the Conqueror saw their worth after his historical victory in 1066 when he had an impressive two thousand of the local breed transported back home. As with so many native breeds however, the New Forest Pony has seen many declines in its history. In the 18th century however, an important Throughbred stallion who had already produced one of the most famous and successful racehorses in history, was introduced into the herds.

5) It would be hard to think of a traditional teatime favourite without mentioning fish fingers and interestingly Hampshire was the first to sample such treats. Although fish fingers were developed in Great Yarmouth by Birdseye, it was shoppers in Southampton who were first able to add the soon-to-be popular product to their weekly shopping and no doubt everyone was asking for seconds!

Have your say on the future of Romsey A new green shopping space on Broadwater Road, opening up access to the Fishlake stream and a new location for the Aldi supermarket are just some of the proposals being considered as part of the plans to redevelop the area south of Romsey’s town centre. The first stage of the draft masterplan has now been published as the Romsey Future partnership, together with Test Valley Borough Council, today launch the second stage of the public consultation. The masterplan has been pulled together following feedback from the first consultation held in late 2018. Residents, businesses and other interested parties can have their say on the proposals through an online survey or pop along to a number of events to be held over the next six weeks. The masterplanners, Nexus and Perkins & Will are holding events at Romsey Town Hall and The Royal British Legion as well as attending the country market through a pop-up stall until March 20. The draft plans form a number of short, medium and long-term proposals covering the potential future of the area for the next ten years. The short-term goals include enhancing the passageways and access to green spaces, while the medium-term plans consist of a new green area along Broadwater Road that could would make more of the River Test and potentially house new shops. It would also improve the road layout and allow for more flexible transport options by forming a new bus station.

In the longer-term, the plans consider the possibility for a new site for the Aldi supermarket and the relocation of a new large community facility, similar to the current Crosfield Hall, closer to Romsey Rapids and a smaller venue within the town centre. This would help to meet the growing needs of the town as well as cater for the provision of car parking and enable residents to park just outside of the town and walk in, using improved pathways and access routes. Along with the developments, a number of accessibility improvements have also been suggested. New access points to Broadwater Road from the bypass have been proposed, alongside better pedestrian access from the area towards Romsey Rapids. The first draft of the masterplan for the area has also taken into account the recommendations of the citizens’ assembly which was held late last year. Around 50 residents, selected to represent the demographic makeup of the town, spent two weekends listening to experts and casting their votes on how best to maximise the area including the bus station and Crosfield Hall. The main themes of the assembly included improving the night-time economy, creating more green spaces and better transport connections, both for vehicles and pedestrians. Chair of Romsey Future and deputy leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Nick Adams-King, said: “At the beginning of the first stage of this consultation, I

COMMUNITY NEWS was clear that all ideas were welcome as this was a completely blank slate. Now, although we’ve had a considerable amount of input from residents and members of the citizens’ assembly, we are still very keen to hear what the community thinks of the plans so far. “There were many suggestions in the first stage of the consultation but hopefully it will be clear why these participants’ proposals have been taken forward and for those that haven’t been included in the draft, hopefully they can see the current plans and see why. “With these proposed changes to
the area, I understand that parking and accessibility will be extremely important, and these plans provide plenty of flexibility for improving both of those aspects moving forward. I would encourage anyone who would like to have their say to take this opportunity to do just that. Residents can get involved by going along to one of the events or by completing an online survey through the Romsey Future website.” The consultation runs from February 7 until March 20 and residents can have their say at www.romseyfuture.org.uk/ consultation.

Over £2000 raised for FCRT At Abbey United Reformed Church the young people’s fundraising for 2019 for Fortune Centre for Riding Therapy is now completed. In January Paola King, from the charity, collected the cheques totalling £2,061.91. This is an amazing total which was only possible with the support of the congregations and the Church’s friends. Almost £600 of the total came from Kirsty's Victorian Christmas concert. It was a wonderful evening's entertainment as well as raising so much money. Other fundraisers included the Bingo evening, the Springfield Concert, various raffles, including lunch club, skittles and Easter Egg raffle. There were also donations for refreshments in church and the coins which people collect during the year. Thanks to everyone for their support. The aim of the fundraising for the year was to sponsor a horse, Jackson, to help provide sessions benefiting young people. This amount should cover Jackson’s expenses for a whole year.
£2,061.91 - which is a phenomenal amount of money raised by the Abbey United Reformed Church Pioneers. The wonderful donation will look after Jackson for a whole year. Any excess will be a great help towards the provision of the Weekly Riding Therapy service (WRT), which FCRT runs on a subsidised basis. This important service could not continue without donations and fundraising support. WRT is provided for local children with physical, emotional or sensory needs. We receive referrals from a local hospice, healthcare professionals and schools. The Physiotherapist uses games and collecting toys for functional tasks to improve awareness and motor function. The pony’s movements help the child to sit centrally and use his core effectively when reaching and using his muscles."
Collecting the cheque was Paola King, Fundraising Co-ordinator of Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy. She was pleasantly surprised by the amount raised and thanked the children and church for their support for the FCRT work. She said, “It was an honour for me to receive two cheques that totalled

Mad March Hares, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Despite the chill in the air, it’s clear that spring is tantalisingly close. One of the most delightful signs of the season has to be the sight of mad March hares batting at one another with furious, furry fists. While this strange ritual may look like a hostile feud, it is actually a precursor to courtship. The pugilists are usually the females, who fend off amorous male admirers by boxing with them. It is also thought that female hares use this technique to test the strength of their prospective partner before deciding whether to choose him as a mate. Hares are slightly larger than rabbits, with longer, more powerful legs, and larger ears with distinctive black tips. They are most common in grassland habitats like arable fields, grasses and hedgerows, as well as at the edges of woodlands. With many arable fields still bare, March is by far the best time of year to see these beautiful animals at their theatrical best. For the most part, hares hide in long grass to conceal themselves from predators, but when threatened, they are capable of impressive athleticism. Hares are can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour at full pelt, and when threatened, they will leap sideways and backwards over hedges to escape their pursuer. It would appear that being able to run at lightning speed is an excellent survival strategy. Hares are an ancient species, and fossil records show that their ancestors roamed the earth with the dinosaurs. It is thought that they were brought to the UK by the Romans, but have since become naturalised (which means that they
are now established in the UK and are considered to be native). Like other species, hares are thought to have been affected by changes in agricultural practices. Some evidence suggests that myxomatosis, the virus introduced to the UK in the 1950s to reduce the rabbit population, may have spread to hares. While the research about this concerning development is ongoing, we at the Wildlife Trust have been working to tackle the other issues faced by the species. We work with farmers across our two counties to help make their land more wildlife friendly, including providing cover and grazing for brown hares. If you’re hoping to get a ringside seat at a mad March boxing match, get up early to increase your chances and stay down wind so your scent doesn’t give you away. The best places to look are open grassy or arable fields, particularly near to woodland fringes or decent hedgerows where hares can find shelter. Romsey Chamber Music Festival 2020! The third edition of Romsey Chamber Music Festival is fast approaching, see what we have in store for 2020! New artists for 2020 include the Ametza String Quartet, cellist Findlay Spence and violinist David Lopez who will be joining familiar faces in Romsey to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary. Performances will include Beethoven‘s D major String Quartet (Op. 18 No. 3), the String Quintet in C major, the Piano Trio in E-flat major (Op. 70 No. 2) and finishing with a quintet version of the monumental ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata. The festival will also explore the influence of the great German Romantic author E.T.A. Hoffmann plus chamber music master pieces by Mozart, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and Schumann. Our popular Late Night concert will return, this time in a slightly bigger venue, however tickets are still selling very quickly and we expect to sell out in the coming weeks so do snap up the last ones soon to avoid disappointment! This year cellist Lydia Hillerudh will feature in Piazzolla‘s Grand Tango alongside music from Mexico. Last year RCMF presented our first Family Concert and this year’s Animal Antics on Saturday 25th April will feature music by Saint-Saens and Haydn in a relaxed environment for the whole family. Tickets are FREE for children! We’re delighted that pianist Ziteng Fan will be performing Chopin‘s First Piano Concerto in a concert including music by Purcell, Bacewicz, Vasks and Part. There will be two concerts on Sunday 26th April, the first continues our journey of Bach‘s keyboard works transcribed for strings and the second features Beethoven and two Russian composers influenced by the Kreutzer Sonata: Taneyev and his dear friend Tchaikovsky. Judge Geoff Roberts had a very difficult time deciding on the top places in Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club’s annual Projected Digital Image (PDI) Panel Trophy competition. Members had submitted entries consisting of three images to be judged as individual images and also as a set. Eventually Terry Jamieson’s 'Storm Water' was given the trophy. Geoff said he really liked the use of the wave shapes to produce the panel. Terry also received a Seal of Merit for another image, 'Common Blue'. VRCC PDI Panel Trophy 2020 presentation:

Keeping Your Identity Safe With the practice of fraud by impersonation becoming ever more frequent, our clients are advised to take precautions to prevent being taken for a ride by thieves. Sorting out the problems caused by impersonation fraud can be an arduous and stressful procedure. Prevention is far better than cure. Two of the most common frauds are ‘skimming’, in which credit card details are stolen and used to buy goods by use of a counterfeit card or by mail order, and identity theft, in which goods are obtained on credit after the ‘theft’ of your identity. Skimming occurs at the point at which you use your credit card and is very difficult to stop. It is particularly common in some popular holiday destinations. Precautions you can take are: • Use a credit card, rather than a debit card where possible: at least then you won’t find that you cannot withdraw cash because your account has been overdrawn; • Don’t let your credit card out of your sight if you can avoid it; • Cover your hand when you put the PIN in using a cash point or pin terminal; • Do not attempt to use a cashpoint or pay by credit card unless you are sure the machine is legitimate; • Never give your PIN to anyone else; • Never give card details to any telephone enquirer; • Check your bank statements and credit card statements carefully; • Make a note of all your credit card etc. details and keep it in a safe place; and • Include the telephone numbers of the card companies, so that you can put a stop on a card as soon as something is amiss. Identity theft is, in theory, easier to stop. In this case, the fraudster will obtain details about you (your address etc.) and apply for credit in your name. It is surprisingly easy, as the information necessary to establish credit can often be stolen from the contents of your dustbin. The easiest way to minimise this risk is to make sure you never give out personal details to anyone you are unsure should have
them and also to shred all paper waste that contains your personal details. This should include offers of credit cards etc. which are sent as advertising flyers. It is also sensible to check credit card and bank statements carefully. If you are denied credit terms when there appears to be no good reason, you should beware – this is often a sign that attempts have been made to obtain credit using your address. If you think you may be the victim of identity theft you can check with a credit reference agency (such as Experian) to see if credit searches are being undertaken by finance houses. Applications for credit normally attract a credit search, so this can be a valuable early warning. If your suspicions are wellfounded, inform the Police immediately. Any email from any source (eg: your bank or HM Revenue and Customs) which requests any confidential information (such as your PIN code or bank account details to be confirmed) should be treated with the greatest suspicion. Never open attachments from unknown sources and always make sure your internet security system is up-to-date. If you use social media, it is worth checking your safety settings carefully. In some cases GPS information may be attached to a picture you post - enabling a viewer to find the location from which the picture was posted within a radius of 30 metres. What to do if you find a baby bird What to do when you find a baby bird on its own There’s always more than meets the eye when you encounter a lonely baby bird. Your natural instinct might be to take it under your wing, so to speak, to take it to the vets or interfere with its natural course of life. Sometimes this is necessary but more often than not, the kindest thing to do when you encounter a baby bird is to leave it well alone… they often aren’t as helpless as we think! Going against your natural instincts The term ‘fledgling’ refers to a young bird that has ‘fledged’ its nest but is not yet able to fly. Odd as it may sound, this process is perfectly normal. Some young birds leave their nest when they are fully feathered and live on the ground until they’re able to take flight. Feathered vs. un-feathered If you find a feathered chick in your garden, the best thing to do is to leave it well alone. It’s simply going through a natural phase of its life. What you can do to help the fledgling is keep your pets – particularly cats – well away from it. Consider keeping them inside for a day or two, a fledgling won’t spend long on the ground before they’re ready and able to fly. There are exceptions to the rule. If you find a young bird by the side of a busy road, for example, you can move it further away to somewhere they’re less

Un-feathered chicks are unlikely to leave their nest deliberately. If you find one and it’s obvious that it’s fallen out of the nest by accident, the best thing to do is to put it back. If you can put it back of course, and providing you’re certain it’s going back in the right nest! Removing a bird from their natural habitat If you find a bird that is injured or otherwise unable to return to its nest, contact us or an expert rehabilitator. Once a bird has been removed from its natural habitat, it is likely to need human care and intervention for the rest of its life. With this in mind, make sure that the fledgling definitely needs you to intervene before you do so. The golden rule is: if the bird is fully feathered, it will have left its nest deliberately and probably just needs you and your curious pets to keep out of their way for a day or so. If you find an injured bird contact an expert rehabilitator as soon as you can.

Gardening tips for March
March signals the start of Spring and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. Preparation is key and now is your last chance to get ready for the warm weather ahead but be aware of those last rogue frosts. Greenhouse - This is a great time to clean the greenhouse and keep it free of any lurking pests and diseases. Clean all the windows to allow more light in for plants to propagate and thrive inside ahead of the next growing season. Remember to keep doors and windows open on sunny days to allow water to evaporate and keep the greenhouse disease free. Compost the borders - This is a great opportunity to carefully rake out a good quality compost. I recommend a good organic homemade mix or well-rotted, grass, manure and/or mushroom compost. Remember to give your Roses a boost with wood ash from the fire or bagged potash from the garden centre. Feeding your acid loving plants such as Azalea with ericaceous feed or compost will be necessary especially if they are planted away from trees and other shrubs that are less acidic. Healthy branches - Cut out any branches showing signs of coral spot and clear away dead plant tissue where this disease can take hold. Dieback appearing on woody plants after the cold season should also be cut out, down to healthy growth. Grass Cutting - All lawns need mowing; it is one of the most frequent and important tasks in maintaining a healthy lawn. At this time of year this is best done on dry days and make sure you get the cutting height right. Mowing frequency and using the correct mower can make a huge difference to the ongoing health of the lawn.
Left later fresh plant growth can make this task difficult and the end result often looks less attractive. Paths - This is another task best tackled now. Before the edges of your herbaceous borders start to cover them. Simply hoeing, power washing hard surfaces, weedkilling (on dry, sunny days) and resurfacing gravel will provide an attractive less slippery and weed free surface as the garden comes to life.

Pond maintenance - Clean out your pond, whether that means a full cleanout or just picking up a bit and rinsing things off. Check pond pumps to make sure that they’re clean and functioning correctly. Fix any leaks in your water feature. Remove algae, leaves and other debris left over from the season before. Hedges - This is the cusp of nesting season and your last opportunity to get the hedge shape needed for the year ahead. We recommend cutting hedges and trees is generally avoided between March and August as this is the main breeding season for nesting birds. It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. Stir Fried Salt and Pepper Squid Stir fried salt and pepper squid has a fusion of East and West flavours. It is absolutely delicious as either a starter, a main course or as a supper dish. The preparation of the squid sounds a little torturous but it is really very easy. Preparation Time: 20 Mins Cooking Time: 10 Mins Total Time: 30 Mins Ingredients For 4 servings…
For the salad
750 gms squid 1/2 tsb peppercorns - black 1/2 tsp peppercorns - Sichuan 1.2 tsp salt - sea 2 tbs olive oil 1 chilli - hot, red - thinly sliced 3 spring onions - sliced
1/4 cucumber - peeled and cut into strips 50 gms bean sprouts 25 gms watercress 2 tbs soy sauce - dark 2 tbs sesame oil 1/4 tsp sugar - caster 1 pinch salt
Method To prepare the squid… Pull the head and white intestines away from body. Remove the tentacles by cutting them off in front of eyes. Discard head and separate tentacles. Squeeze out the beak-like mouth from the centre of the tentacles and discard it. Pull the clear, plastic-like quill from the body. Pull off the two fins from either side of the body pouch and pull away the brown skin from the body. Wash the body. Slit open the body on one side, open it flat and clean away any remaining membrane. Lightly score the inner side with the tip of a sharp knife into a diamond pattern. Then cut the squid into 5cm pieces. To prepare the salad… Toss the cucumber with the bean sprouts and watercress and set aside in a fridge until needed. Whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar and salt to make a dressing. To cook the squid… Heat a small heavy-based frying pan over a high heat. Add the black and Sichuan peppercorns and dry-roast for a few seconds, shaking the pan now and then, until they darken slightly. Tip into a mortar and crush coarsely with the pestle, then stir in the salt. Heat a wok over high heat until hot. Add the oil and squid and stir-fry it for two minutes, until lightly coloured. Add the pepper and salt mixture. Toss together for 10 seconds, then add the chilli and spring onions and toss together very briefly. To serve… Divide the squid between plates. Toss the salad with the dressing and pile alongside the squid. Serve immediately. Wine recommendations

Walking beside Southampton Water Photo 2
This month’s walk is a first of it’s kind, in that it involves and entirely ‘out and back’ route, which if done fully would cover approximately 5.5 miles. The terrain is gentle, mostly through woodlands, with tree roots and loose gravel being the greatest hazards. By following the described route the regular walker should be back home in about 2 hours, provided distractions do not create too much delay. Photo 1
The suggested parking is beside The Anchor Inn, Eling Lane, Totton, SO40 9GD (photo 1), where you overlook Eling Wharf and you are only a smidgeon away from Eling Tide Mill (photo 2), which is very well worth a visit if time allows. This location also marks the Southern end of the Test Way, a 48 mile route up to the top of Hampshire. Meanwhile if a visit to the Mill is the plan, it would be best advised to check on opening times.
high tide times before starting. Also, as there are great views across the water (still the River Test), then binoculars would be a bonus. It is possible to catch up with bird life of several varieties, including gulls, little egrets, curlieu, oystercatchers, red and green shank along with the occasional heron out fishing. Once leaving the car (at last), we head directly back to the Tide Mill and walk left over the Toll Bridge (free to walkers), with the Mill holding pond over to the right and an expansive view down towards Southampton Docks on the left. Clearing this bridge we immediately turn left again and follow the defined path around the shingle edge of the foreshore. The first landmark here is the open grassy field, always popular with dog walkers and family groups; beyond that we drop down to follow the coast path on the left, with the estuary water lapping at our feet. Far away to our left we get a full view of the workings at Southampton Container Port, the 2nd largest in the Britain; with giant cranes and container forklifts shuttling along the quayside (photo 3). In about 300 metres we meet a woodland as the fence line drops back to the right. At this point we must climb the short bank and continue the journey in the dry, continuing to follow the coast side path all the time, tracing the outlets and inlets of this tidal estuary.

The return journey may seem uneventful, but with the vital right hand turn opposite the Sewage Works (see photo 4 again) and no waymark arrows, it is a challenge to maintain the correct trail. It is intriguing how everything looks different when viewed in reverse. This path weaves, wiggles and twists under the trees for around 1.5 miles (2.5 km) as the scene across the water to the left continues to alter, it will be easy to halt and count the plethora of birdlife, especially at lower tides. Then eventually the path meets a T junction, when a metal fence surrounding Marchwood Sewage Works, comes into view. We must turn left here, but make a very good note of the location (photo 4) as this will be an important turning point on the return journey. Photo 5
We now embark on the final leg, towards the outer edge of residential Marchwood, passing a jetty (photo 5) then eventually reaching a concrete walkway in front of Maritime Avenue and leading to the Esplanade (photo 6). Conveniently enough there is a bench to rest a short while before turning for home again and a chance to catch up with a fresh flock of sea birds down stream.
Once out of the woods and dropping down onto the soft, even boggy, finale, we can see Eling Wharf in the distance as it comes back into view. With the very final stretch swinging right over the Toll Bridge and right again beside the Mill and along the Wharf to the waiting car. Needless to say, a warm welcome awaits the weary traveller within the Anchor Inn, so feel free to gain refreshment before starting for home. It’s always good to be prepared. Here’s some tips for your walk… • Remember high visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times. • Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended. • A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety). • Make sure you take your rubbish home to keep our countryside clean and help the environment. • Dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags and for hot days water & portable bowl. • Be ‘Tick Aware’ when enjoying the countryside. Bronchiectasis Bronchiectasis is a long-term condition where the airways of the lungs become abnormally widened, leading to a build-up of excess mucus that can make the lungs more vulnerable to infection. The most common symptoms of bronchiectasis include: • a persistent cough that usually brings up phlegm (sputum) • breathlessness The severity of symptoms can vary widely. Some people have only a few symptoms that don’t appear often, while others have wideranging daily symptoms. The symptoms tend to get worse if you develop an infection in your lungs.
In bronchiectasis, one or more of the bronchi are abnormally widened. This means more mucus than usual gathers there, which makes the bronchi more vulnerable to infection. If an infection does develop, the bronchi may be damaged again, so even more mucus gathers in them and the risk of infection increases further. Over time, this cycle can cause gradually worsening damage to the lungs. Why it happens Bronchiectasis can develop if the tissue and muscles that surround the bronchi are damaged or destroyed.
When to see your GP
There are many reasons why this may happen. The 3 most common causes in the UK are:
You should see your GP if you develop a persistent cough. While this may not be caused by bronchiectasis, it requires further investigation.
• having had a lung infection in the past, such as pneumonia or whooping cough, that damages the bronchi
If your GP suspects you may have bronchiectasis, they’ll refer you to a specialist in treating lung conditions (a respiratory consultant) for further tests. How the lungs are affected The lungs are full of tiny branching airways known as bronchi. Oxygen travels through these airways, ends up in tiny sacs called alveoli, and from there is absorbed into the bloodstream. Breakdown Advice – Part 1 Breaking down on the road can be a frustrating, unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous and scary experience. Every year, people are killed or seriously injured while stopped on the roadside, but many drivers don’t know how to keep safe in the event of a breakdown. Motorway breakdowns In a breakdown situation, the most important thing for drivers to consider is the safety of themselves and other road users, particularly on high speed roads like motorways. Hard shoulders are extremely dangerous places – one in 11 motorway deaths involve a vehicle on, entering or leaving the hard shoulder. If your vehicle develops a problem on the motorway: • if your car develops a fault but you can continue driving, leave the motorway at the next available exit and stop at the service area; • if the problem requires you to stop immediately, pull onto the hard shoulder and stop as far away from the traffic as you can, with the wheels turned to the left, if possible next to an emergency phone; • never use a warning triangle on the hard shoulder of the motorway, as walking along the hard shoulder to place a warning triangle puts you at risk of being hit; • never sit in your vehicle on the hard shoulder, even if the weather is bad. This is dangerous as you are at risk of being struck from behind at high speed; • put on your hazard lights and get out on the left hand side, and wait on the verge, well away from traffic; • anybody who is unable to leave the vehicle, for example someone with mobility issues, should wait inside the vehicle with their seatbelt securely
