Rick Stein’s charity lunch raises £3,100 for local hospice Forest Holme Hospice celebrated receiving a donation of £3,100 from Rick Stein’s restaurant in Sandbanks, which they raised through a special charity initiative earlier this year before lockdown. The popular seafood restaurant organised a special three course charity lunch during January with a percentage of each meal going to the Poole-based charity. The money will help fund the provision of end of life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. Due to the effects of the
Covid-19 pandemic, the charity is expected to have an estimated deficit of over £350,000 this financial year. Paul Tucker, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Forest Holme said, “We were so pleased to have been chosen by the restaurant and absolutely thrilled with the amount raised. Rick Stein’s have previously supported us with a Coffee Morning and we want to thank all their amazing staff and customers for their support and generosity. This money will make a big difference to local people who need our care and support at the most difficult time of their lives.”

BY MICA BALE Although it may be difficult to ignore the current situation and the challenges it presents, Dorset as a beautiful coastal county still has much to offer, whether that be in the form of holidaying at home or rediscovering old favourites or even a few hidden gems. From important conservation work to an impressive museum and art gallery in Bournemouth, here is another handful of five facts from around our beautiful county.
Did you know? It is believed that it was the monks of a certain Benedictine priory at Loders who first introduced cidermaking to Dorset in the 12th century? Certainly, Dorset has made good use of this skill and there are many local award-winning cider producers throughout the county.
A fascinating visitor attraction Dorset has to offer is the Russell-Cotes Museum in Bournemouth which was originally an intricately designed house commissioned by Sir Merton Russell-Cotes, Mayor of Bournemouth as a special present for his wife. Several years later however, they decided to open the house and displayed many of their amazing artefacts to the town whilst still residing at the house. This generous gift and decision to share their home with the town has been a magnet to art, curio and history lovers from all over the county.
Have you visited the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park? Located at Verwood, the Heavy Horse Farm works to preserve some of Britain’s rarest horse breeds, including the critically endangered Suffolk Punch as well as Shire horses, Percherons, Ardennes and Clydesdales. These gentle giants have been a part of the landscape throughout Britain for centuries, helping to transport people and goods and even to farm the land. Although now many of these breeds are suffering from critically low numbers, the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park is joining in efforts to preserve these breeds for future generations and has even welcomed several new arrivals. From an extensive history that begins with William Conqueror it would be perhaps difficult to choose just one moment from the history of Corfe Castle that stands above its exciting heritage. One of the most remarkable stories that comes from this Dorset stronghold must surely be that of Lady Mary Bankes whose prowess and determination saw her defend her home against a mighty siege by Parliamentary forces. Perhaps what made this so particularly impressive was that when the siege began, she had just five men with her to stand against several hundred soldiers!
Did you know? The surgeon credited with saving the life of King Edward VII and also renowned for his companionship with 'Elephant Man' Joseph Merrick, was a local of Dorset? Born in Dorchester, the renowned surgeon gained widespread acknowledgement following his successful treatment of appendicitis reportedly saving the future king’s life before his coronation by accurately diagnosing appendicitis and operating on the monarch reportedly on a table in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace!

Talking about Wildlife...
The dragon of the skies… No summer is complete without experiencing the sights and sounds of a dragonfly as it hunts over a nearby pond. Agile and colourful, dragonflies are a joy to watch with their aerial manoeuvres rivalling the fastest military aircraft as they duck and turn in pursuit of prey, or narrowly avoid the clutches of hungry hobbies. These adaptable insects lord over wetlands, moorland and even woodland glades, feeding on flies, midges and even each other. If you thought butterflies were the only insects worth a second glance, these multi-coloured, iridescent predators demand appreciation too. In addition to occasional visitors from continental Europe, there are 17 species of damselfly and 23 species of dragonfly resident in the UK. They are found in almost every habitat, bringing a splash of colour to the landscape just as the wildflowers and butterflies are winding down – so now is the perfect time to spot them! This year in Dorset we’ve been lucky enough to witness the arrival of the Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly, which is usually found in warmer climes. Spotted in Lytchett Heath in east Dorset, this is a first recording for the county, most likely due to the prolonged period of warm weather this summer. than the more common migrant hawker, and is often called the blue-eye hawker, on account of its blue eyes. The migrant hawker dragonfly is one of the most exciting dragonflies to spot, and you can often find them hunting along sheltered hedgerows in August and September. Another impressive dragonfly you may see this year is the emperor dragonfly, which is a characteristic dragonfly of new ponds, where for the first few years, their larvae may be extremely common. The males are pale blue, with an applegreen throat and a black stripe running the length of the body. Dragonflies are most active in warm and sunny conditions and are most commonly found near water, but several species also travel to feed in gardens, fields and woodland edges. The Dorset Directories Camper Van For anyone new to these pages, Daichi, The Dashing Dude is our beloved Campervan. He is fun loving and adventurous and passionate about steering us to new places, to take us out as a family, exploring the coast and the countryside. He loves England and drove all the way from Japan to be with us, where he had a new suit fitted including fridge, cupboards, table, bed and a great new roof that lifts perfectly, giving us plenty of headroom inside. This month he was shaking with excitement. Daichi had heard of the ‘Mummy’s Curse’, so when Stephen’s sister suggested we meet at Beacon Hill and celebrate Grandpa’s Birthday with a walk and a picnic, Daichi (and us)

Socially distanced group selfie... complete with lockdown hair! was raring to go. Beacon Hill, near the village of Burghclere and overlooking the glorious Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey, houses the grave of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who died in 1923. Highclere Castle has belonged to this family since 1679. The 5th Earl, an enthusiastic Egyptologist, is famous for his sponsorship which led to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Howard Carter exposed the tomb which had lain silent for nearly 3000 years and was adorned with rich Egyptian artifacts. Carnarvon must have been delighted after years of donating, but the story goes that on arriving in Cairo he was fatally bitten by a mosquito, which became infected following a razer cut. Carnarvon died of blood poisoning. Thus started the famous and chilling tale of “The Mummy’s Curse” which has enraptured many a movie since. What do you think? To be fair Howard Carter lived until 1939 and died at the age of 64, but we rather like a good, scary tale. Daichi whole heartedly believes it. He loves those movies too!

27 Beacon Hill itself is pretty steep. Daichi took one look and gracefully declined, deciding he was better suited to the car park. I was pleased that during the Lockdown we had done many a walk around the forest, which meant I was much fitter than usual. Stephen’s sister and father are very keen walkers and Hayden and Stephen are far fitter than me. It is quite a hill. As the weather was dry it meant the ground was good for walking, but I would not recommend this on a wet day. The views are stunning. Glorious rolling hills, trees, blue sky and white / grey folded clouds. You can’t beat an English panoramic landscape. It inspires the soul. We did stop a couple of times to catch our breath. Looking at the views was indeed a good excuse! We must have passed Beacon Hill on the A34 hundreds of times and had never thought to stop and look, let alone climb to the top. The hill is 261 metres high. My fit bit watch told me that I had climbed the equivalent of 37 flights of stairs. Not bad for my day’s exercise. Daichi does Downton!
Going down was far easier... those years ago and what families would have been doing and creating then. How times have changed. Now with all our gadgets, cars, machines… and then with sickles, pruning hooks, ploughs and iron axes. It was a pretty violent time too, so maybe there are benefits to our more modern age. All food for thought. Talking of which, the picnic at the foot of the hill on the two conveniently placed picnic tables, provided wellearned refreshments. Rachel had baked some delicious sausage rolls as well as cupcakes, so we were very well catered for. A harmonious rendition (that maybe a bit generous) of “Happy Birthday” to Grandpa signalled the close of a wonderful walk. Daichi had kept the food perfectly cool in his little fridge… he also looked rather cool and contented with himself as we drove away all smiles. I wonder if there were any ‘Mummies’ lurking in the trees, watching us? Before driving all the way home, we did stop off at Highclere Castle, also known as Downton Abbey. It was open! That is a trip for another day. Daichi loves Downton, so there is a good chance he will take us. Will that be next month, or somewhere else? You will see… By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Herb Gardens
Nature tends to dictate what we do in the garden and sometimes it’s just too late to plant those seeds, too early to prune that bush and incredibly you are already on top of the weeding. So what can you do to fulfil that urge to work the land? Why start a herb garden of course!

• If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. • Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. • Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. • Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. • Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes. Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an
attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground. Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. Most types of herb can be raised from seed, but for a quicker start browse the farmers market, garden centre, or even car boot sales for plants that are ready to go. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!

RNLI Volunteers Stay Busy Poole lifeboat volunteers have had an incredibly busy year so far despite lockdown, with over a 100 Shouts so far and it doesn’t look like its going to ease up soon. The crews have been issued with PPE and new launch and recover protocols were issued. All equipment, kit and lifeboats are thoroughly cleansed, wash down and sanitized after each Shout, it is time consuming, but the lifeboat volunteers must ensure the environment is safe as it can be, safe for the volunteers and safe for the casualties. With the cracking weather, lockdown restrictions lifted, we have seen the coast swamped with people just wanting to get away, this has been compounded by the overseas travel restrictions, so more holiday makers on a ‘staycation’ which in turn means more people on the beach and out on the water. One recent weekend saw the crews respond to over 12 incidents in one day, a lollipop, lilo, numerous dinghies and pink flamingos, inflatables, all potential dangerous then whipped away by the offshore winds. A myriad of water users, kayaks, SUP’s, yachties, boaters, floaters(inflatables) and swimmers, it’s a crazy time. We want people to have fun and enjoy themselves, but we ask people to please to take care and consider some of the following when heading out on the water. • Stay within your means, don’t put yourself at risk, know your limitations • Wear a lifejacket • Have a means to call for help • Check your engine, check your fuel • Swim on a lifeguarded beach, between the flags • Check the weather, ask about the tides and local conditions
• Tell someone where you are heading and what time you are expected back. • If you find yourself unexpectedly in the water, float to increase your chances of survival • If you see someone else in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard The lifeboat station has also faced its own ‘storm’ with fundraising being non-existent, our Old Lifeboat Museum on the quay usually welcomes over 22,000 people through the door is closed for the foreseeable and no visits to the station, no collection boxes visible on shop counters and we and to cancel the Open Day. As a charity that relies totally on donations from the public, we had to think of another way to fundraise. We recently held a virtual lifeboat week on our Facebook page, the concept was to engage with the lifeboat community, have fun, sharing our stories and useful information, like how to check your lifejacket. We gave a virtual tour of the station; we filmed and shared the Shantiliputians singing ‘A drop of Nelson’s blood’ social distanced outside The Lord Nelson, we shared filmed clips of our crew chatting, sharing an insight to what it means to be a volunteer. Despite the dip in funds coming in, it will not affect our lifesaving service and we will always launch and be there to save lives at sea. Photo courtesy of Poole Lifeboat

Tastes so good... Chewy Breakfast Bar
A delicious, chewy bar that’s packed full of dried fruits and nuts that’s perfect to be served as breakfast, or a lunchbox treat
Ingredients for 8 servings 1 cup almond butter 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup almond milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2.5 cups rolled oats 1 cup rice cereal 1/2 cup chopped almonds 1/2 cup sultanas 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate plus 1/4 cup melted to finish

Preheat the oven to 325f/160c Line a square baking tin (8x8in) with baking parchment. Spray a little coconut oil in first to help secure the paper.

Mix the wet ingredients into a large bowl making sure the almond butter is fully combined.

Add the dry ingredients and stir well.
5.
Spoon the mixture into your tin and press down well with your spatula.
6.
Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
7.
Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes then drizzle with dark chocolate.
8.
Pop in the fridge to ensure the chocolate is solid.
9.
You can store each slice in the freezer once wrapped in foil for up to three months or 1 week in the fridge.
