Parkstone Evening Townswomens Guild
Parkstone Evening Townswomens Guild meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month (except August when we have an outside event) at St Josephs Church Hall, Bournemouth Road, Poole at 7.30pm. The entrance to the car park is in Archway Road. We have a speaker each month and run book, drama, lunch and walking groups. We also arrange trips and theatre visits. Rockpool Residents Our best childhood memories usually feature a summer day spent at the beach with a bucket and fishing net, peering into seaweed shrouded pools in search of silvery fish and secretive crabs. The excitement of tempting a crab out of hiding with a tasty morsel of leftover ham sandwich or turning over a rock to find a five-armed starfish clinging to the dark underside stays with us for a lifetime. Nothing has changed. The fascinating world of the rockpool is still as alluring as ever, both for the older generation and for our youngsters – so here are a few tips to try with the children this summer. August and September are the best time as the rockpools are full of young blennies, crabs and prawns as well as shoals of small mullet and other fish. If you sit quietly by a rockpool the inhabitants will soon come out of hiding and carry on their busy lives in full sight. Curious blennies will come out to peer at you from beside a rock, quarrelsome crabs will battle it out between themselves and busy prawns will even give you a manicure. Blennies are the nosy neighbour of the rockpool! Insatiably curious, these little fish like to know what’s going on in their neighbourhood. Try dabbling your fingers at

the water’s surface to entice a nosy blenny out of hiding to come and investigate. On a calm day when the sea’s surface is mirror-smooth only the ripples give away the presence of shoals of small fish such as mullet as they swim away from your approach. Look for their shadows on the seabed just ahead of the ripples, as they are easier to spot than the fish themselves. Look underneath stones at the bottom of rockpools to find tiny but beautiful cushion stars, small relatives of the more familiar starfish. As you watch they will glide over the surface of the stone as if on air, heading back to the safety of the dark. To keep yourselves and the wildlife safe, always follow the Seashore Code, gently replacing everything exactly as you found it and handling animals with extreme care. That way they will all survive to provide another delightful rockpooling day in the future. How just 10 minutes on a Whole Body Vibration machine changed my life, disability and my size Shake and Tone Poole opened in August 2014, to offer people just a pinch of the health, fitness and wellbeing benefits that I experienced. In March 2009, due to a trivial accident where the seat came away from the base. I twisted to the side and back, landing on an out stretched arm, causing a whiplash injury, damaging the muscles in the back of my shoulder. My spine was slightly out of alignment, affecting my Sacroiliac joint, causing pain and stiffness to my hips. I also had sciatica down the back of my right leg. The bottom right side of my leg was completely numb. I lived in constant pain, which intensified to an unbelievable levels. I was diagnosed with a chronic pain condition and eventually Fibromyalgia? In spring 2013 after Aqua fit, a friend noticed my pain and suggested I went with her to “Flabs”? As soon as she told me they were vibration machines, I said “NO. I can’t use those. They set my pain off immediately. My friend explained that even though they are vibration plates, they move completely different to the gyms plates. These plates oscillate (not linear) and are a passive form of exercise. They are not as intense as the ones in the gym and she believed they would do me some good. I still said no! I didn’t want to take the chance and irritate the nerves more and go through that level of pain and discomfort again. The thought of vibration when you’re in pain, is far from appealing. In the end my friend pestered me for so long, that I agreed to go.
Was it all worth it? Yes!
When we got back to the car, she asked how I felt. I realised I didn’t hurt. I was amazed that after just 10 minutes, my pain had gone. I said, “Oh, I’m in the least pain I have been in for years.
I don’t hurt. I can feel where the pain should be, but it doesn’t’ feel like pain, it just feels like a thickness, probably where the muscles have locked up?” Her reply was “You’re also standing up straight”. Which I also hadn’t noticed. The immediate benefits I received after just that first 10 minute wobble, on an (Oscillating) Whole Body Vibration machine was remarkable to my health, wellbeing and fitness. My pain had gone, although the muscles were tight. My flexibility, mobility and posture was much better and my mood and energy had increased so much, in just a few hours, I felt amazing. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Nellie took us to The Ashdown Forest! It would be a good school project for pupils to compare and contrast our wonderful New Forest with The Ashdown Forest. They are alike in so many ways, yet very different in others. Part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty, The Ashdown Forest is 30 miles south of London situated in East Sussex. Nellie was extremely excited to be going away, with her friends Roxy, Rocky and Mega, the bikes, as well as “Kombi”, otherwise known as …“The Tent”. When we set off the weather was wonderful, glorious sunshine and blue skies. We arrived at our destination around 8pm. We did get stuck in some traffic jams but nothing too horrendous. Stephen and I had booked a site in Crowborough at the Caravan and Camping Club. It is a very clean site, well kept, and certain spots have magnificent views over the hills. The facilities are small but very adequate. We set up camp…. with great anticipation.

The view from Stone Farm Rocks The following day the rains started and it pretty much rained for the next 3 days! One evening we even had lightening and awful winds. It is quite something lying there wondering if the tent will hold or are we all going to be blown into the sky? What with that and the Gatwick Jumbo 747’s flying low above us, as they were about to land. It was all very exciting! There are other words I could use, but this is a family magazine… I was glad we had bought a decent air bed and had lots of bedding, so we were well wrapped up. The tent does have an inner section for the bedrooms, which did help with some of the leaking that occurred. With driving rain like that, hard for several days solid, it is hardly surprising that some drips do start to fall inside. One night Hayden wasn’t at all happy, but I told him we would all take refuge in Nellie, if the tent suddenly collapsed. That seemed to appease him. Good old Nellie. All in all I think we survived really well and I can
29 now say we are hardened campers! Nellie is also recovering well and is starting to smile again. Once the rains stopped we went to climb rocks (well actually I looked at them), that are deemed to be 135 million years old! Nearly as old as I felt with all that worry about the rain. “Stone Farm Rocks” they are called and it is a Site of Scientific Interest. It is owned by the British Mountaineering Council and there are 74 climbs for those adventurous to try. There is actually quite an ‘atmosphere’ around these rocks and I would imagine you could spend an interesting evening in the dark around the bonfire we saw, that had recently gone out. The huge, 5,566,000 cubic metres Weir Wood Reservoir covering a site of 280 acres can be seen from the top of the rocks and it is obvious why this region is known for its outstanding beauty. Awesome. Travelling back we found a lovely organic farm shop, called Plaw Hatch and just had to stop and buy some good, wholesome food. Camping has that effect on you, you suddenly have the urge to be more healthy. It must be all that fresh countryside air!
Hayden feeding one of the goats The Ashdown Forest itself has some wonderful walks, fantastic places to park the car (or van) and wonder at the expanse of picturesque English countryside rolling before you. There are sheep, cows and some fierce looking bulls, though I think they are pretty harmless, as long as you leave them alone. You know who is boss! There are plenty of trees, shrubs and heathland to gaze at. If you like animals, the Llama Park is a great day out. There are family walks that can be done with the Llamas themselves, pony rides for the children, wonderful reindeer, cute looking alpacas, peacocks, pigs, goats, a play ground and a lovely café / restaurant. Oh yes, there is also a fantastic clothes shop with some superb alpaca knitwear. A definite must for the ladies. Nellie loved her day there, and so did Hayden! Where will Nellie go next…?

New Ford Mondeo
By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk The fifth generation Mondeo is now available with Ford’s range of economical EcoBoost engines and, for the first time in the UK, a hybrid petrol-electric option. Introduced in 1992 to replace the Ford Sierra, the Mondeo went on to become a piece of popular culture in 1996 when Tony Blair used the phrase ‘Mondeo Man’ in his Labour Party Conference address. What a shame there’s so much badge snobbery around these days though. The reaction I got from premiumbadge car lovers when I mentioned I was attending the Ford Mondeo press launch wasn’t exactly upbeat. This just goes to show how marketing and image affects people’s preconceptions. Don’t get me wrong; Ford is no stranger to spin either, but I’ve got to tell you this latest Mondeo is the real deal. At launch, I tested the Mondeo Titanium Estate 2.0 Duratorq TDCI. With 148bhp and 258 lb.ft of max torque, the Ford is able to dig deep at low revs, resulting in proper pulling power. Certainly, it’s easy to be blinded by the kudos of a premium badge but the Mondeo is brilliant whether in estate, five door hatch or four door hybrid semblances. It’s handsome, interior space is excellent, the ride is smooth and the handling is spot on. The diesel estate, in particular, excels in every single area. It’s fantastic to drive, it has a refined engine and the boot is the perfect shape for carrying a range of everyday items, from a family-sized weekly shop to a stack of suitcases. It’s good value and will be less costly to run than many of its competitors. The car is crammed with entertainment tech and safety gadgetry too. In fact it’s the most advanced Ford ever introduced in Europe, and has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP. The Mondeo is the first car from the Blue Oval brand worldwide to offer Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. This is designed to detect people in the road
ahead – or that could cross the vehicle’s path – and automatically applies the brakes if you don’t respond to warnings at the wheel. Also introduced for the first time in Europe is Ford’s ground-breaking Inflatable Rear Seatbelt technology. In the event of an accident, the seatbelts expand to disperse crash forces across a body area five times greater than that achieved by a conventional belt. This offers valuable extra protection to very young or old passengers with weaker chest areas. On the entertainment front, Ford’s SYNC 2 connectivity system boasts an eight-inch colour touch-screen to operate phone, entertainment, climate and navigation systems using voice commands. For example, simply pushing the voice control button and saying “I’m hungry” will display a list of local restaurants, and the MICHELIN guide can help you choose where to eat. SYNC 2 will then connect you by phone to the restaurant to book a table and guide you there. Groovy, or what? So, this Ford Mondeo with its ‘common-as-muck badge’ is as good, if not better, than many of the eulogized German ‘premium’ cars. Go on – hop in one and try one out. Nature tends to dictate what we do in the garden and sometimes it’s just too late to plant those seeds, too early to prune that bush and incredibly you are already on top of the weeding. So what can you do to fulfil that urge to work the land? Why start a herb garden of course! Jobs for September:If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes.
Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground.
Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!

Charity urges companies to support inclusive recruitment Dorset Blind Association is looking for businesses to participate in their campaign to support brighter futures for young visually impaired people. The charity is seeking Corporate Champions to post videos of blindfolded tasks to social media in a campaign called #tryitblind and to promote to their networks. The September campaign aims to fund and raise awareness of employment for blind and partially sighted people. In a bid to raise £15,000 by the end of September for an employability project, businesses are being asked to encourage their employees to upload a picture of themselves trying a task blindfolded. Employees simply upload the image onto social media with the hashtag #TryItBlind, text MPLY22 £3 to 70070 and nominate their friends to do the same. The charity is encouraging the business community to take part in the campaign and show they support inclusive recruitment policies. Ian Girling, Chief Executive of the Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: “It’s so important for employers to recognise the contribution people with disabilities can make and get on board with inspiring campaigns like this. I congratulate Dorset Blind Association for the incredible work they do in providing these kind of opportunities and support people with sight loss.” Changes, caps and reductions of benefits and Access to Work schemes have made life more challenging for people of working-age with sight-loss. This campaign aims to give blind and partially sighted people a stepup towards education and employment. Everybody wants to feel like a valued part
of society and Dorset Blind Association believes that visually impaired people should have the opportunity to contribute. Christopher Long who has visual impairment and is finding it hard to find work added: “Employers and recruitment agencies need to look past the disability and look at what the candidates can do.” Jaya Da Costa, Fundraising Manager for Dorset Blind Association said: “We are looking for companies to be Corporate Champions for the campaign by participating, encouraging their staff and promoting to their networks.
