Civic leaders asked for views on city status

The three Mayors of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being written to and asked to formally consider whether an application for city status is desirable for their town. Her Majesty The Queen intends to award new city status to areas as part of her Jubilee celebrations in 2022, and councils can bid for the honour via a competitive process. Whilst the process dictates that BCP Council would technically need to make the application, the status can be awarded either to the full BCP area or to one or more of the towns of Poole, Christchurch and Bournemouth in their own, individual right. Leader of the Council, Cllr Drew Mellor comments: “In many ways, the BCP area is regarded as a single place, for example in terms of harmonising local government service provision or attracting inward investment. However, our strongly held view is that we must at all times respect, protect and celebrate the sovereign status of all three towns so we feel it is correct for the civic leaders of each of these towns to determine whether they wish their area to apply for city status. I have therefore written to the

Mayor of each town to ask for the next meeting of the Town Council or Chartered Trustees to consider this matter. Depending on the outcome of those decisions, BCP Council will take action or no action accordingly. I’m really clear – it should be the Town Council or Chartered Trustees decision, not BCP Council’s.” He continued, “It could well be that none of the three towns feel that they want to apply. Or it could be that one or more decide they would like to put forward a bid. There are no strict criteria that need to be considered, such as the need to have a cathedral. However, if we are to apply for city status for all or part of our area, we must do so in the knowledge that we have the support of our civic representatives, since this is an honour from the Queen herself, one that has the potential to beneﬁt our area and the people who live here for generations to come.”

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Is autumn in the air? Although some may be mourning the promise of heady summer days and snatched barbecues, others are longing for the crunch of leaves beneath their wellies and to see our county in all its seasonal beauty. To celebrate, here are ﬁve more quirky facts around Dorset!

Did you know that Dorset could well be home to the oldest surviving teddy bear museum in Britain? With countless cuddly bears located in various domestic settings throughout the museum, the collection is home to bears that are more than 100 years old and also contain several big name and vintage bears including Winnie the Pooh, Paddington and Rupert Bear. Remarkably, the ﬁrst female architect to design a public building, came from Bournemouth! Elisabeth Scott was one of ten children who grew up in the Dorset town with a family heritage of architecture, most notably her great-uncles Sir George Gilbert Scott and George Frederick Bodley. Although it is the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre for which she is best known, even before this prominent work, Elisabeth was pioneering women in architecture. In the 1910s, she was one of the ﬁrst ever women to train at Architectural Association and from there, after gaining her diploma, she won a competition to design the theatre. In addition to that, Elisabeth went on to design the Pier Theatre in her hometown, with the intention of making the theatre appear as if guests were aboard an ocean liner.

Were you aware that it was a Dorset farmer who largely contributed to the control of smallpox, an illness which infected countless people. As a farmer, Benjamin Jesty had seen firsthand how workers who had come into contact with cowpox were later immune to smallpox. As a result, he was among the very first to introduce immunity by suggesting that people be infected with a small amount of cowpox in the hope of protecting them. However, unlike others such as Edward Jenner, Jetsy did not publicise his findings and is often forgotten as a key part of fighting smallpox in Britain.

Did you know that Cranbourne frequently welcomed royal visitors to its settlement? Favoured by the kings for its hunt, King John and later King Henry VIII were never far from an opportunity to hunt and as such, enjoyed coming to this slice of Dorset.

Did you know that it was in Dorset that one of the very first legal cremations took place? Although popular on the continent, in Britain they were yet to be legalised. However the owner of Manston House, Barnabas Hanham, in the village of the same name, was met with a difficult situation following the deaths of each of his three wives. His second wife was buried locally however the area has a tendency to flood and, despite the waterproof burial place, the water was still an issue. Upon realising the problem, Hanham and his wife Edith promised each other that they should not be buried there. Unfortunately before long Edith too passed away in 1876 and Hanham joined the fight to have cremation legalised. It was not until 1882 after years of campaigns and special permission from the authorities that Manston House, it is believed, became the first site of a legal cremation in Britain. Big Ben Ben Fogle has made a name for himself across a variety of pursuits, though after a couple of years away from the cut and thrust of extreme adventure, the presenter, explorer and activist is summoning up the courage for a new challenge. From Ben Fogle’s TV breakthrough on the BBC reality show Castaway 2000 – which saw him marooned on a remote Scottish island with 36 other people for a year – to competing in the six-day, 160-mile Marathon des Sables, to racing across the Antarctic Plateau to the South Pole, to ascending Mount Everest, Ben Fogle has never shied away from a challenge. Despite living in London for most of his life, Fogle’s passion for the great outdoors has merged with a natural talent for broadcasting to present the 47-year-old with some true lifechanging experiences. “I love one-off experiences; challenges that take me to mental and physical extremes, and that element of danger where you are pushing yourself to the edge,” he begins. Asked to name the most

demanding, and Fogle will always point to those experiences at sea. “It is just an alien environment. At any time, the end is right beneath you and around you,” he says. “We are not designed as water creatures, so from kayaking to paddleboarding, long-distance swimming and rowing, it’s all a step into a world that isn’t designed for us, but that’s what becomes the great thrill.”

Fogle has a wholly modest assessment of his nautical feats, one that fails to take into account the greatest of his achievements on water. “The solitude is something I will always remember from that experience, being out on the high seas,” says Fogle. “I’ve always loved boats and have spent quite a bit of time on them over the years, but never like this of course. Two guys on their own in a small 20ft vessel with no support around them is pretty terrifying, especially when you capsize!” Switching back to terra ﬁrma in TV series such as New Lives in the Wild, Storm City, Animal Clinic and Countrywise, as well as writing a series of travel, ﬁction and children’s books, Fogle has enjoyed the relative calm of home. “Life is never dull, but I know I’ll always head back to the oceans,” he says. “They have a spirit all of their own and it’s the passion that draws us back. I love that feeling, so watch this space, I suppose!”

Talking about Wildlife...

Return of the birds Migration is a form of adaptation, vital to survival, as the changing seasons vary climate. As autumn approaches, we will start to see migrant birds returning to the UK, completing a journey of thousands of miles. What may look like chaos to us as we witness flocks of birds pass above, is actually part of a planned and calculated flight, unique to a species. Some will take a direct route, whereas others may prefer to follow a costal course. In the South of the UK, we are lucky to be winter hosts to members of the thrush family such as fieldfares and redwings; two migrant birds that resemble eachother. Fieldfares are large and yellowbreasted, whereas Redwings can be identified by distinctive bursts of orangey-red under its wings. Returning to nest in Iceland and Scandinavia around the end of March, these birds take this time to indulge in our berry-laden hedgerows, parks and woodlands. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Kingcombe Meadow Nature Reserve offers an excellent opportunity to see these migrating birds with its abundance of thick hedgerows. Fieldfares are sociable birds and can be seen in flocks of over 200. Increasing numbers of migrating birds, such as the fieldfares and redwings, are being spotted in our gardens. A combination of freezing conditions and the dramatic decrease of insect populations forces

these birds to take refuge, so don’t forget to top up your bird feeders or provide mealworms, cheese and suet to help keep feathered visitors energised this autumn and winter. Also look out for geese and wading birds will arrive in September and October in their hundreds and thousands. Dark-bellied brent geese flock to southern shores in early October. The Chesil Beach Centre, over looking the Fleet Lagoon, is a great place to see these birds in action. Holes Bay, Poole Harbour is the estuary (tidal mouth) of serval rivers and is therefore another perfect place to look out for migrating birds and some fantastic flocks can be seen late in the afternoon there. Coastal areas make excellent vantage points for a keen bird watcher, or even if you’re just starting out. Tips for watching migrating birds: 1. Check tide times and take precautions with appropriate clothing. 2. Time your visits: geese are mostly likely to be seen at sunrise and sunset. 3. Keep a record of birds arriving and departing over the season. 4. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars! By Holly Toman

As we are finally emerging from the challenging period of the last 18 months, it is a wonderful vision to see visitors returning to the area post Covid, and acknowledging the ‘natural beauty’ of Sandbanks. The cafés and restaurants are bustling, and it is refreshing to see new businesses opening. Our family have been here a week; the weather has been glorious, and the locals are very welcoming and friendly. We will definitely

be coming back next year”. It is a pleasure to see tourists appreciate Sandbanks as much as the residents do. There has been a large inﬂux of re-locators from all over the country; especially London. Sunseeker sets new record at the Bournemouth Air Festival Sunseeker brought together a record number of new and classic boats during the Bournemouth Air Festival on Saturday 4th September. Just under 40 boats sailed through the Marine Exclusion Zone in front of spectators in a spectacular water display. Andrea Frabetti, CEO at Sunseeker International, commented: “We are delighted to bring together a record number of Sunseeker’s at this year’s Bournemouth Air Festival. The event truly was a celebration of Sunseeker’s past and present.”

Jon Weaver, Air Festival Director, added: “What a fantastic spectacle we saw on Saturday with a ﬂotilla of Sunseekers through the ages parading between the piers, particularly with the additional last minute appearance from Pip Hare being an added bonus. It was great to have the support of Sunseeker this year, with many participants for Saturday’s parade. Along with the new Atlas Elektronik UK STEM marquee on the East Overcliﬀ and the Dorset EMC STEM Breakfast which took place on Thursday, Sunseeker’s maritime contribution has certainly helped shape the festival’s future STEM involvement.”

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect discusses sustainability and regeneration in our villages, towns and cities. Right now there’s a whole band of architects who are really trying to evolve a style of architecture that combines futuristic with traditional – both ends of the spectrum. What we’re talking about here is incorporating natural materials with contemporary, so you get an airtight insulated building. I am a huge advocate of eco buildings, and I think what a lot of people produce – and we have seen many over the years on Grand Designs – are incredible, intelligent, responsible; but you also have to approach the subject with realism. It may look great on the telly, yet as architects and housebuilders we’ve got to be prepared to admit the very extreme eco/traditional wooden, single grass-roofed, claywalled approach to building

It demonstrates an interest not just in tradition, but in low impact construction. We need more ways of stimulating not just these local areas and communities, but the way we build those facilities too; we need to encourage people to take the power back, because authorities rarely seem to be able to make progressive decisions themselves.

Wessex Cancer Trust ﬂying high after QuoStar-sponsored fundraising event at Bournemouth Air Festival raises £12,000

After taking a break in 2020 due to Covid-19, this year’s event took place on Friday 3rd September 2021 at Key West Restaurant on Bournemouth Pier during the Bournemouth Air Festival. The event, supported by QuoStar for the seventh year running, has in total raised close to £40,000 over the years. Attendees were welcomed with a Pimm’s on the prom, which was followed by a three-course lunch and some fundraising fun and games. The 180 guests also enjoyed spectacular VIP views of the Air Festival ﬂight displays throughout the day – including the spectacular Red Arrows. James Stelfox, Managing Director at QuoStar, comments: “We’ve proudly partnered with Wessex Cancer Trust for the past seven years and they are an obvious choice for us. It’s important to QuoStar to support a local charity that makes a big impact in the area. Wessex Cancer Trust does so much great work in the local community, providing invaluable support not only to those living with cancer, but to their loved ones as well. They do such a fantastic job putting these events on, too!

Sarah King, Wessex Cancer Trust’s Corporate and Community fundraiser, said: “It was wonderful to be able to put on this event once again after a diﬃcult 18 months for so many. The Modern Magazines Camper Van It has been said that happiness is a journey and not a destination. Well, I have to say that I am never happier than when Daichi is loaded up, and we begin our next adventure. That moment when we take our seats, buckle up, and say, “Ok, what we have forgotten we can either do without, or we will buy when we get there.” Enough is enough, let’s get going! My ‘story’ this month is all about the journey, the route to and from our destination. This time we went all the way up to Hull to collect my parents, to take my Dad fishing at Docklow Pools again, one of Dad’s favourite fishing haunts. Mum has dementia, which is very sad and not always easy to live with. Dad needs a break and what better than to take them away, get Mum some fresh air and give Dad some time to catch a few fish. His life-long passion. The journey there took us over the Humber Bridge! I remember the building of this magnificent, single span construction when I was a girl. It was so exciting to see the massive layers of concrete starting to crawl, step by step, across the waters. I remember looking at it with awe, wondering how on earth it could stay up in the air like that. To me it was magical. You can see that I am no engineer… The Bridge opened in June 1981 and at the time it was the longest

Grandad and his passion! single span Bridge in the world! It was not until 1998 that a Japanese Bridge literally overtook it and now, 40 years later, it is the eleventh longest bridge of its type on this planet. I love driving over it and viewing the enormous River Humber with its brown murky waters flowing below. To be honest, I don’t think this Bridge has ever really achieved the accolade it deserves. Arriving in Hull is always a trip down memory lane for me and Daichi likes to skip his way there. Sometimes it is good to look back at ones’ roots, with a bit of nostalgia. After a good night’s sleep, we travelled over the Bridge again to see family who have moved over to East Halton in North Lincolnshire. Houses are so much cheaper here! It is so good to catch up, isn’t it. Long lost cousins, aunts, aunts’ children’s children, in fact five generations in all! The weather was warm, there was a beautiful garden and with a glass of wine in hand and a good old chat, what more can we want! Oh yes, we had quite a laugh too. Daichi was part of the family and he loved it. His shiny white grin said it all. Docklow was a great success too. The lakes there

There is a fantastic bric-a-brac shop there too where this time I bought a new rug for our hallway. All smiles, well fed and a little shopping therapy, we were set for the day. Next stop was Crickley Hill nestled in the Cotswolds overlooking the Severn Vale with incredible views to the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, including Robinswood Hill and May Hill. Just off the A417 in Gloucester, near Birdlip, this was a great find on a previous trip when I was hungry. It is glorious! The views are simply stunning. You can see for miles and gaze at the wonder of our beautiful countryside with a coffee and cake in hand. Owned by the National Trust as well as the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, it is a haven for birds, plants, insects and wildlife. The walks around this area are just spectacular. My Mum and Dad, who were travelling home with us, were amazed

View from Crickley Hill at what they saw and thoroughly enjoyed our scenic stop. Back on the road we travelled further South with our final stop at Avebury. Now in the county of Wiltshire with a Neolithic henge monument containing three huge stone circles. We had arrived in prehistoric Britain and a little further back in time, than my memories in Hull - Though getting out of bed in the mornings, it sometimes doesn’t feel so! Stones weighing around 40 tons still standing, majestically, thousands of years later. How incredible and inspiring is that? For contemporary Pagans this is a site of religious importance. What a fascinating place we live in. England is full of delights, sights, nature and indeed family. Daichi allowed us to do so much in just a week. It was a long round trip from Dorset to East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, to Herefordshire, back through Gloucestershire, into Wilshire and finally back to Dorset, with a stop in each place. The happiness was certainly in the journey. It was spent with family, making it all the more special. Despite the challenges of dementia and ‘old age’ Daichi helped us create a journey packed with good times. Daichi does hope that when you travel you take time to visit along the route. It extends the holiday and adds to all those wonderful memories of times spent together. Where will Daichi take us next I wonder…? By Debbie Corney

This month, as the nights draw in, Alan Titchmarsh explains how our gardens can still be a place of light, stimulation and decoration, and why now is the time to plan for brighter months ahead. There is a saying: ‘gardeners learn to grow the things that want to grow’. In fact, the truth is everything wants to grow, it’s just up to us not to get in the way of that! A big part of growing is preparation, and the best time to start planning for next year is right now; so really have a good look around your garden, do some research, and revel in the excitement of what it will look like in six months’ time. The ﬁrst things to consider are sunshine and shade; ﬁnd out your plot’s capabilities and then you’ll know how you can grow all kind of things, be they in the soil, or in tubs, pots and troughs. Consider size as well – do you have a ranging outdoor space or are you more limited? In

Plants begin to wither, ﬂowerful gardens sink into greens and browns, and there’s a feeling of packing up for winter, waiting for the spring for colours to begin to return.

One very obvious way to extend the days in your garden in autumn/winter is to add some subtle lighting. I don’t have much lighting in my garden but I try to use what I have to maximum effect. There are some up the sides of a path, and others that highlight things - I’ve got a tall hedge with urns in front with a couple of lights in them, and they look wonderful. They go on in the evening for a couple of hours and then switch off at 10. I loved looking at those urns – it’s not over the top but it keeps the garden alive and to be enjoyed at night. Dare I say it, it’s almost romantic, which is very ‘me’ of course!

Parkstone Army Cadet Force News Is your child on the phone too much? Would you rather them gain confidence, make friends and gain life skills through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, first aid training, and BTEC qualifications? The Army Cadet Force is a national uniformed youth organisation for young people based upon military lines, it is sponsored by the MOD who provide uniforms, equipment and training facilities. It is important to note however there is no compulsion to commit to serving the armed forces, although some do choose this as a career path. The Cadets follow a progressive, structured syllabus designed to build confidence, resilience, leadership, and teamwork as well as practical skills such as first aid. This month, Potential Instructor (PI) George Pearce undertook the Advanced Instructor Cadre (AIC), his final assessment of his instructor training. The week long assessment honed his training in leadership and delivering lessons which these skills can aid him in in the ACF along with employment and everyday life. Pearce returned bursting with ideas for the detachment and a well-deserved promotion to Serjeant Instructor (SI). Pearce added “It was my best decision to join as an Adult Volunteer and I feel more confident after passing the course”

This year Dorset ACF was back at the Bournemouth Air Festival with both Cadets and Adult Instructors interacting with the general public, as well as forging contacts with other regiments. This gave the Cadets an opportunity to work on their community engagement along with their communication skills. Nerves were high for one Cadet at the beginning of the event but through gentle encouragement, she came into her own where she was freely able to talk with the public. During the end of the event she said “thank you for helping me with my conﬁdence as I was really nervous at the start.”. Want to join us and be the best you? Welcome to the October Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include an unpredictable meteor shower, as well as the gas giants continuing to dominate the evening skies. International Space Station The ISS is visible from the 1st - 7th between 7.30 – 9.30pm. It then moves to the early morning skies from the 23rd. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Object of the month The Plough is a recognisable pattern of stars in the constellation of Ursa Major, known also as the Big Dipper, and Saucepan. The ‘bowl’ can be used to locate the North Star, and the ‘handle’ the orange giant star, Arcturus. During October it is easily spotted in our north-western skies around 7.30pm. Most of the stars in this familiar grouping are moving together through space, hence in 100,000 years our ancestors will see the same pattern of stars. However, the stars at the tip of the handle and top of the bowl are not part of this group, and move independently. This means that in future years our ancestors will see a skillet, rather than a saucepan (see ﬁgure).

Events Two meteor showers occur this month, but the Orionids, which are caused by Halley’s Comet, will be lost in moonlight. Better placed for viewing are the October Draconids which peak on the 8th, and are visible all night. Meteors are often faint, but in some years have been plentiful. Draw an imaginary line from Altair to Vega, and the radiant is half that distance again past Vega, high in the western skies. Mercury Mercury is visible for a few days mid-month, but you’ll have to be up early and have a clear view to the east as it doesn’t venture far above the horizon.

Venus Venus is still hovering in our evening twilight, but sets around 7.30pm. Our closest neighbour is huddled up close to a 3-day-old Moon on the 9th (see ﬁgure). If you have a small telescope Venus will appear ‘half-full’ this month. Mars The red planet is lost in the Sun’s glare until November when it becomes a morning object. Jupiter & Saturn Both gas giants continue to be visible in our southern evening skies. The Moon joins them between the 13th – 15th (see ﬁgure). Moon This month’s full moon occurs on the 20th of October and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Hunter’s, Blood and Fall Moon. To the Algonquin indigenous tribes it was known as the ‘White frost on the grass’ moon. Saturday 16th October is International Observe the Moon night. Have a look on the internet and see if any local astronomy clubs are hosting an event near you. 56

Butternut Squash and Chorizo

Introduction

As autumn draws in, the tastes and ﬂavours that pattern our diets begin to change. We don’t necessarily require nor crave the lightness of the summer, with salads gradually giving way to meat and carb-inﬂuenced dishes. With that in mind, using the light, sugariness of a butternut squash, yet gently layering in meaty protein that can guide us towards the winter months, is a great way to embrace the season. What’s more, the versatility of the dish means it can be cooked for breakfast by leaving out the gnocchi, as a medium lunch, or combined with bread for an evening meal. Oh… and it tastes fantastic!

Method

Ingredients (serves four) 1 tsp of olive oil 300g chorizo 450g butternut squash 1 onion 500g gnocchi

Top Tips

• This is a ﬂavour-driven plate that intends to combine sweet with spicy. Don’t be afraid to experiment further, adding sourness (in the form of lime), tomato ﬂavours (which will also add moisture), and generous proportions of salt and pepper too. Let your tastebuds run away with you! • Be careful not to overcook your chorizo. Remember, considering it’s a food that can be eaten cold, it really doesn’t need much cooking at all, so lean on the side of undercooking. If you fry it for too long, it will become tough and unpalatable.

1. Warm the oil on a medium heat and add the choppedup chorizo. Cook for around 5mins until it’s browned, and the oil begins to seep out, but turn down the heat when this happens so you retain moisture in the meat. Remove and keep to one side. 2. Now combine chopped butternut squash and onion, cooking over medium heat with

an addition of oil, if needed. Stir until golden brown and tender, for 10-15mins. 3. Add your gnocchi to a pan of boiling water and cook for four minutes. Then drain. 4. Stir in the chorizo with the butternut squash and onion, and season with salt, pepper and lime, then serve with the gnocchi.

Tip This plate has an intensely Spanish ‘small plates’ feel, but you can add green vegetables to it to create a more balanced dish, north European twist, should you wish.
