We had such a good time at the Bournemouth Air Show at the end of August! Planning permission granted for new cinema at Dolphin Shopping Centre The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole is pleased to announce planning permission has been granted by the Borough of Poole to convert existing space into a nine-screen cinema.
The former Argos store and adjoining units will be redeveloped into a new-build, nine-screen cinema complex, complete with four adjacent casual dining restaurants. Construction work is expected to start later this year. Empire Cinemas has signed a 25-year lease to operate what will be the first multiplex in the town centre, with one of the nine screens being open-air on the rooftop, giving a memorable experience for residents and holidaymakers. The cinema development is the latest announcement as part of the Dolphin’s £26 million programme of investment with Legal & General. Legal & General bought the centre in 2013 and is carrying out an 18-month improvement programme, with other changes including mall refreshes, public realm updates and new retailers. John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, commented: “We’re delighted to announce that planning permission has been granted for this exciting multiplex cinema. This
latest investment will further shift the shopping centre towards a truly family-orientated offer and will help bring an element of trade that will extend into the evenings, creating a strong daytime and evening attraction for the south coast town. “The cinema, at the heart of the shopping centre, will help generate more vibrancy and appeal for the town centre as a whole and will provide significant additional amenity for visitors to the Dolphin.” Justin Ribbons, chief executive officer of Empire Cinemas, commented: “We are delighted that planning permission has been granted. Empire Cinemas is thrilled to be returning to Poole as part of this fantastic new leisure facility at the Dolphin. With nine Screens including Empire Cinemas large format, IMPACT® Screen, D-Box and our open-air, rooftop screen there really will be ‘Something For Everyone’.” The Dolphin covers 530,000 square footage with over 100 retail, restaurant and leisure brands and has an annual footfall of 11 million. Talking about Wildlife... Red Squirrel Adoptions Red Squirrels are in need of help, so this autumn, treat yourself or a loved one to a special wildlife gift with a Dorset Wildlife Trust wildlife adoption. This time of year, the red squirrel can be seen scurrying around the woodland floor collecting nuts for winter and jumping between trees on Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour, Dorset. The popular red squirrel, a native species, has been in decline for many years, but Brownsea Island, owned by the National Trust, is proud to give a home to a population of 200 of these enchanting creatures. The island is one of the few safe havens for the reds in the South West. They can be seen by visitors for most of the year but are particularly active during the autumn as they prepare for winter. It’s the perfect time of year
to make a daytrip to the beautiful nature reserve, managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) on Brownsea Island. Mini Print Exhibition in Swanage Over 500 mini works of fabulous, affordable and original art by more than 150 printmaker artists are on display in a mini print exhibition not to be missed. The vast range of inspiration, subject, technique, style and price is astounding and indeed the only theme running through this exhibition is the size of each of the works; just 10cm x 10cm. All works are for sale and the prices range from £25 - £300. Curated and presented in the most ingenious and yet simple format, it’s little wonder that in just its third year that organisers Red Dot Art has embarked on a UK wide tour visiting galleries in East Anglia, The Cotswold, Leeds and Oxford over a 6 month period from September 2018 to June 2019.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Hayden went to see Nellie, The Dorset Directories Campervan who had an accident a few months ago. She is now at the Old Van’s Home and like all good Grandparents she was keen to find out what her 14 year old ‘grandson’ had been up to over the summer. Hayden was very excited to tell her… “Well Nellie, I got to interview Red 10 at the Bournemouth Air Show!” He exclaimed with a big grin, nearly as big as Nellie’s silver shine. “I got to do this because I was asked by the Blue Skies Team. Blue Skies is a programme to help young people with their communication and leadership skills organised by the Jon Egging Trust. The Blue Skies Programme has helped me build up my confidence.” Hayden continued, “Before I was shy in asking people things, but now I have more self-confidence to talk to people: even those I don’t know, like Red 10!” The interview went like this… Hayden - What is your role within the Red Arrows Team? Adam (Red 10) - I’m the supervisor of the team. In the winter workout period I am the supervisor of the practices, looking at the display patterns and liaising with the authorities about the displays we are putting together. During the summer display season, I

Hayden - What motivated you to work with the Red Arrows? Adam - It’s a unique opportunity and a unique job that when the opportunity came to apply for it, I couldn’t really turn it down. When the Red 10 job came up it was something that really appealed to me. That is why I am doing it. Hayden - What’s the best thing about being a Red Arrow? Adam - It is such a variety of things that we do. We have had such good weather this year, so we have done lots of full shows. I love meeting the public (like you to be honest) and the commentary. It is an honour to be the face of the RAF and also representing Great Britain when we go overseas. It is a unique job. Hayden - What is most challenging thing about being a Red? Adam - The variety, as we are constantly going from one thing to another. This weekend for example we have 5 or 6 Displays up and down the country so we are on a very tight timeline between displays. We do PR and media bits in between and it is really finding that balance

29 to do everything to the standards that we expect of ourselves, being able to switch from task to task and then to focus on it. It is quite tiring, you just have to manage that carefully, but really the best bits are the hardest bits as well. It really is one of the roles that is unique, you are always working hard, but it is always rewarding. Hayden – What has been your favourite time with the team? Adam – This is my first season so the whole season for me has been amazing and I shadowed my previous predecessor for couple of months last season. But really going to events like this, it is the reaction of the crowd when the jets arrive, and we start the display. It is that feedback from the crowd that is the real buzz. Hayden - What would you say to someone aspiring to be a Red Arrow pilot? Adam - I’d say to them that we all started somewhere. One of the aims of our RAF 100 this year is to inspire the next generation and really with our Shows that is what we are trying to do. All of us at the Red Arrows were at school once. We went to college or university, we did exams, we were doing revision and that kind of thing and it really is a step by step approach to then join the Air Force and go through flying training and ultimately join the Red Arrows, so my message really would be just to work hard and take it one step at a time. We all made it, so there is no reason why anyone else can’t!
Hayden – For my last question, what would you say to a young person who is struggling, to be the best they can be? Adam – Really it is that message that we have all started somewhere, we have all struggled at some point, be it through school or through education or going along through training and flying training. Keep persevering, take it one step at a time and all of sudden through struggling through something it becomes a great success. You are not going to get there instantly, so it is just working your way through it and having the right attitude, working hard and then eventually you will get there. Thank you. Great to meet you! Hayden turned back to Nellie, “Once I interviewed Red 10, I then got interviewed on the interview, by Bournemouth Air TV! It was quite a surprise. It made me really use all the skills I have learned from Blue Skies and I think I did ok, considering I wasn’t warned! Finally, I also got to meet the rest of the Red Arrows and other display teams. “I even had my photo taken with the pretty Wingwalkers (Nellie raised her wiper), as well as the Tiger’s Parachute Display Team from the British Army, Sally B’s pilots, the stunt pilot Rich Goodwin, the Strikemaster Pair and the new Team Raven were all there. How exciting was all that!” Nellie was super impressed with Hayden’s recitings and she hopes you had a great summer too! By Debbie Corney

YMCA Bournemouth invites/challenges communityminded local businesses to take part in its biggest ever sponsored rough sleeping event On the night of November 17, directors and staff from an expected 20+ businesses and organisations across Dorset will be braving the cold on behalf of YMCA Bournemouth to support ‘The BIG Sleep Easy’ at The Bournemouth Sports Club (Chapel Gate) near Bournemouth International Airport. Fundraisers will wrap up warm, build shelters out of cardboard boxes, take part in fun challenges and then sleep outside for the night, protected only by their sleeping bag, hot drinks and the warm messages of those who’ve sponsored them. The event will take place in an enclosed area of Bournemouth Sports Club from 6.45pm on Saturday to 8am on Sunday morning. YMCA Bournemouth are inviting local businesses, groups and organisations to put their own teams forward for the event, the purpose of which is to raise awareness of local homelessness and essential funds to support the charity’s work. Fundraising Manager, Martin Stockley, said: “We had such great feedback from our previous Sleep Easy collaborations with Bournemouth University and Lytchett Minster School, we wanted to open the opportunity up to the local
business community, who we thought would also benefit from the event’s teambuilding aspects, positive local community involvement and resulting impact.” He added: “The aim is to raise at least £10,000 to go towards our work providing the support that homeless individuals need to help them return to independent living and a positive long-term future. We urge all employees to mention the event to their managers – it’s going to be a great night out for all involved!” Local businesses already putting teams forward include Altogether Care, Corbin & Co and Make Studio, plus Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry members ITSB, Keyfort and Lester Aldridge. If you are lucky enough to have a pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth.
If you have a pump to run a fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before Winter hibernation.
Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later!
If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out.
In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants.
Having said all that, I've actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

Lighthouse launch feelgood family pantomime Dick Whittington This year’s feelgood Lighthouse pantomime Dick Whittington was officially launched this week, with cast members meeting the Mayor of Poole Sean Gabriel at the town’s historic Guildhall. Popular children’s TV presenter Chris Jarvis, who stars in, directs and writes the pantomime, was joined by members of cast including Richard Gibson (‘Allo Allo’s Herr Flick – returning to Poole by popular demand) as Alderman Fitzwarren, Katie Arundell as Alice Fitzwarren, Dereck Walker as Dame Dolly Donuts and Sammy Phillips as Tommy the Cat. The line-up is completed by Craig Rhys-Barlow as King Rat and Charlotte Knowles as Fairy Bowbells, accompanied by a supporting cast of dancers and a young company comprising talented local children. This is the third year running that Lighthouse has co-produced its
homegrown pantomime with Duncan Reeves Productions, the company headed by actor and TV presenter Peter Duncan. Dick Whittington follows the success of Aladdin in 2016) and last year’s magical production of Cinderella. Audiences at this year’s pantomime will set out on an adventure with Dick and his acrobatic cat as they journey from Poole to Olde London Town then across the sea seeking fame and fortune. Pigs: It’s Pannage Time!
During the autumn months, it’s not an uncommon sight to see pigs roaming the forest floor. The reason for this is one of pannage! Pannage is the practice of releasing domestic pigs into a forest (also known as ‘Common of mast’), and goes all the way back to the time of William the Conqueror, who founded The New Forest in 1079. The pigs are released onto the forest to eat fallen acorns, beechmast, chestnuts and other nuts; green acorns in particular are poisonous to the New Forest ponies and cattle which roam the forest the majority of the year. Up to 600 pigs and piglets will work their way through the forest eating the acorns and nuts from the forest floor. It is the only time of year that the pigs are allowed to ‘roam’ the open forest, the rest of the time they are kept in their smallholdings by the commoners. In the 19th century the number of pigs released for pannage was as high as 6,000. Pannage is no longer carried out in many areas of the country but can still be observed every year here in the New Forest National Park. Pannage lasts for a minimum of 60 days and is vital because acorns are poisonous in large quantities to cattle and ponies and can lead to cholic. Pigs however are believed to spit out the toxic skins and enjoy eating the acorns.
You can usually find the pigs roaming the forest floors from around the third week in September, or whenever the acorns begin to drop from the beautiful oak and beech trees. The exact Pannage dates are decided by the New Forest Verderers and the Forestry Commission based on seasonal variations. This years Pannage is due to take place between 10th September 2018 and 11th November 2018. During times of exceptional acorn falls, the pannage season is usually extended by the Verderers. New Forest pigs must also be fitted with a ring through their nose which still enables them to forage through leaf litter and surface vegetation but stops them from rooting into the ground with their snouts causing damage to the Forest. Some of the different breeds of pig that you can find out on the New Forest include: Tamworth, Gloucestershire Old Spot, the British Saddleback and the Wessex Saddleback. There isn’t a specific breed of New Forest pig. During the pannage season also keep a look out for the local artisan bakeries, farm shops and shops that sell piggy-shaped biscuits to celebrate this most ancient of New Forest practices. Tastes so good...
PULLED PORK SANDWICHES
As the temperature drops, we find ourselves wanting more easy to make, comfort food. Not only is this dish simple to create is also tastes delicious. Perfect for quiet Autumn nights in.
Ingredients for 12 servings 1 medium onion (chopped) ½ cup of ketchup ¼ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of tomato paste 2tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup of cider vinegar 2tbp. sweet paprika 1 ½ tsp. Salt 1 ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 4lb boneless pork shoulder 12 buns or ciabatta rolls
Equipment: Large slow-cooker, large bowl, forks Method: Mix together the onion, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, paprika, mustard and then add the salt and the pepper. Once you have done this, pour the sauce mixture into the slow cooker pot and add the pork, making sure to also coat it in sauce. Pop the lid on top of the slow cooker and cook the pork. Do this on a low setting (one which the manufacturer recommends). Cook until the pork is tender for between 8-10 hours. When it is finally cooked, move the pork from the slow cooker into a large bowl. Change the temperature setting on the cooker to ‘high’, cover the pot and then cook the sauce. Do this until boiling point is reached to make the mixture thicker. Pull the pork apart into shreds (you can use 2 forks for this). Then put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, mixing it into the sauce. Cover once again and cook on high. Finally, once warmed through, spoon mixture into buns and serve.

Forest Holme to mark Hospice Care Week with ‘Heart My Hospice’ campaign Forest Holme Hospice, part of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, will be once again joining forces with more than 100 other hospices across the UK to help raise public awareness about hospice care during this year’s Hospice Care Week (8-12 October). The chosen theme of this year’s event is ‘Heart My Hospice’ and Forest Holme will be asking the local community to share their experiences of what hospice care means to them and help increase awareness about the range of care available in different settings. Forest Holme provides palliative and end-of-life care both within the Poole-based hospice itself and out in the community across a widegeographical area covering Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. However, as Anne Currie, Forest Holme Hospice Charity Manager, explains, it is the diversity of hospice care on offer at Forest Holme and how the charity helps to fund it, that they are particularly keen to focus on. “Forest Holme doesn’t just care for patients”, Anne begins, “it ensures that it is there for their loved ones too. Although Forest Holme is an NHS hospice, it is reliant on charitable donations to ensure that it can continue to provide
the best possible care for patients when they need us most. The charity supports all aspects of the hospice including; the 12 bedded in-patient ward, the purchasing of specialist equipment, the funding of educational posts, development nurse posts, complementary therapies, plus counselling and bereavement support to patients and their families.” One person, who has first-hand experience of the extended care Forest Holme offers to family and loved-ones, is 24-year-old Sammy-Jo Stanley, who has subsequently helped raise nearly £9,000 for the hospice as a thank you. She said, “Forest Holme is an incredible hospice, with such caring and kind people who are understanding and supportive when you are going through such a difficult time. Forest Holme for me was a place I first turned to when my Nan passed away from cancer in October 2009. At 15 I really needed guidance on how to deal with the grief and the hospice counselling team pulled me through, helping me to come to terms with the grief process. Also, their outstanding care when my mum was diagnosed with cancer was incredible and, once again, their counselling service provided both

support to my family and myself. This hospice touches many people’s lives at such a devastating time in life and their support and kindness always shines through.” Forest Holme, who will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year, will be using Hospice Care Week to help spread the word about the range of services that they provide for both patients and their loved-ones, as well as highlighting that hospice care is free and not confined to a building but also available at home through its own community nurses.
Charity Manager, Anne Currie, said, “We are delighted to support this national awareness-raising drive. We want to use it to help spread the word about hospice care and what it encompasses, while also dispelling some of the myths surrounding it. “We will also be encouraging our supporters to share their stories, experiences and memories of hospice care, especially through social media using the hashtag #IHeartForestHolme.”
