Dear Hamworthy residents, We are coming up to that all important, busy time of year, so I hope you are getting ready. I actually bought my first Christmas present a few days ago which is unusually early for me! So now is the time to put the house straight, have someone else clean for you, get rid of those stains in the carpets, buy new curtains, fix the washing machine, treat yourself to a new bed, have a loft converted, or even a new staircase. There are ideas for presents inside too...how about a new bike from Motabitz, or car parts for the hubbie? Shop Dorset has some great choices. Why not have a meal out? Beautiful Poole Pottery Poole on the lovely south coast of Dorset is famous for many things and none more than its Poole Pottery. Many people ask me and are under the wrong impression that Poole do not produce pottery any more. The pottery has had a lot of changes in recent years, moving production from Poole 2uay to Sopers Lane and then to Stoke on Trent, the home of pottery. Most of these changes were due to financial problems and different owners hoping to make their mark and fortune. They are now owned by the Denby pottery group,and production of table/ giftware is at Stoke, whilst high end studio pottery is still made at Poole Quay, employing UXP potters and UISFF paintresses doing work of exceptional quality. Ann – Which book do you keep returning too?
Ann – You’re busier than ever, but looking forward to the new SCD?
Anton – “Fred Astaire’s autobiography ‘Steps In Time’. He’s a hero of mine, which you may have guessed, and like me, not great looking, but boy he could dance, so who needs looks with that kind of talent.”
Anton – “As ever it’s a great show, super team and this year a big change...” Ann – Ah yes, no Bruce? Anton – “Really going to miss him, we all are, but, you know it has evolved, and I think the girls will do a great job to be honest.” Ann – How did you land the famous job on the show? Anton – “Basic audition really, got called back, and it just went from there, no one knew just how big it would become though. “ Ann – Who inspired you to dance at first then? Anton – “The Band Wagon with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse from 1953. Watching them dance inspired me, Brilliant film, and it just had everything really, and what is more it’s not dated at all.“ Ann – How would you like to be most remembered? Anton – “I’m a Catholic, so at my end party, it would be in a church, and everyone would come in to ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’, by Sammy Davis Jr. I’d like a tomb with a dressing room door, and a sign saying, ‘Do Not Disturb‘ .” (laughing)
Ann – You had your own cooking show ‘Step up to the Plate‘ any more shows like Bake Off maybe? Anton – “I loved doing that show, and it was a huge success, but as yet my cooking skills are best left as a presenter, and I would not rule out ‘Bake Off ’ as it’s such a great format, but can I bake?” Ann – Your golden rules for dancing? Anton – “Well I don’t drink, I eat lightly, and above all else blooming enjoy it, or else what is the point?“ Ann – Many people thought you should have replaced Sir Bruce... thoughts? Anton – “Oh that is so nice, and yes I would have loved the job, but who knows what the future holds, I mean I think the girls will do a terrific job. And for me I just can’t wait to see the new series take off once again.“
Ann – You danced with super model Jerry Hall. Good fun? Anton – “She was great fun, and super fit too, with a wonderful grace that models have... its odd you see, because you honestly never know who you are going to get, and that is half the fun really.“

Preparing for Winter Winter is a particularly busy period for our hospitals, as our services come under increasing pressure while we support you with those health issues that worsen during colder months. We rely on you to use services wisely, in particular our Emergency Department (ED), so we can concentrate on those who really need immediate care. By going to the right place, it also means that you will receive treatment more quickly and in the most appropriate way and environment for your symptoms. Our ED is incredibly busy, seeing on average 234 patients a day and should only be used for lifethreatening emergencies. If you are not sure if it’s an emergency call 111 for advice. Feeling under the weather? We are also supporting the NHS winter campaign, ‘Feeling under the weather?’ The campaign urges those who are over 60 (and those who look after an older friend, neighbour or relative) to seek early advice from their pharmacist for minor illnesses this winter. If you’re over 60 a minor illness can get worse quickly. The campaign encourages people feeling under the weather with a bad cough, trouble breathing, a cold or sore throat, to pop down to their local pharmacy for quick health advice. What we are doing to help We are already working with our health and social care partners to develop a plan that maintains essential services through the busy winter: • our Ambulatory Emergency Care Clinic (AEC) will extend its hours and will be supported by additional nurse practitioners • we will be opening additional beds, and recruitment of extra staff is already underway • we have supported funding for additional doctors, pharmacists, discharge key workers and therapists to help our patients get back home quicker You vs Flu Many of you will already have had your flu jab and we are also encouraging our staff to be vaccinated against the flu virus in order to protect you further if you come into one of our hospitals. We have launched our ‘You vs Flu’ initiative which has already seen more than 2,000 members of our staff given the free immunisation.
Consultant for Elderly Care, Divya Tiwari, says: “I get my flu jab regularly every year as I am in constant contact with patients and more prone to getting the virus. It is vital we all get vaccinated.”
Here are our top 10 tips for keeping safe and well this winter: 1. Stay warm – ensure your heating is working and have your boiler serviced before cold weather. The temperature in your main living room should be between 18-21 degrees (65-70F) and the rest of the house should be a minimum of 16 degrees (61F) 2. Eat well - have at least one hot meal a day 3. Wear layers – remember to wrap up 4. Keep active - move about in your home every couple of hours to maintain your body temperature 5. Have your winter flu jab – to reduce the risk of you getting a serious bout of flu 6. Be careful - don’t go out in icy weather, or when it is dark and you can’t see so well 7. Stay safe - if you live alone, consider getting a bleep alarm that you can press if you need help 8. Be prepared – keep your cupboards stocked with long-life foods ensuring you have plenty to eat in case you are unable to get out 9. Ensure you have plenty of your prescribed medications 10. Wimborne charity shop in DIY SOS Following successful revamps of its shops in Winton and Poole, LewisManning Hospice is now turning its attention to its shop in Wimborne, and they are looking for help. Guided once again by Retail Consultant, Louise Croft, who is working closely with manager Jill Holden, the shop opposite The Rising Sun pub at Crown Mead will be closing for a week, from November 24th, to undergo a complete transformation. With a nod to Wimborne’s French connection (with its twin town of Valognes in Normandy), the shop will have a fresh, warm and welcoming feel, inspired by the theme of a French Country Home, using upcycling, distressed wood, beiges, and vintage styles. However, to successfully complete the refurbishment, the hospice is looking for help from the local community and businesses to get behind them and offer their services or materials for free. Louise Croft, explains, “We are desperately in need of help from skilled tradesmen, such as electricians, plasterers, builders and carpet or flooring fitters. We also need people who might be able to help us source lighting, mirrors, furniture and trinkets, or help get donations of paint, wood, or varnish.” “The store is our largest and has an amazing selection of furniture, so we are desperate to allow more space for
this, and give it the beautiful display layout it deserves. We want our give our customers a shopping experience to savour. Every single contribution helps - even just an afternoon putting up wallpaper, or providing us with a couple more spotlights.” The charity, which offers free palliative care and support for local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, currently has eight shops across Dorset and they provide a significant income to help people whose lives have changed dramatically because of illness. Talking about Wildlife...
Volunteer with the Great Heath Team The Great Heath Project is an ambitious and exciting new partnership venture led Dorset Wildlife Trust. The award of a £2.7 million grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund and £2 million of public donations has enabled the successful purchase of 1500 acres of land around East Dorset. The essence of the project is to create a living landscape in an urban area, linking up habitats from the newly purchased land with existing reserves and green spaces (parks and gardens), for the benefit of a huge range of rare and common species. At present the majority of the work we do (with the incredible help of our volunteer groups) is invasive species removal, such as Rhododendron, silver birch, pine and overgrown gorse. The removal of these species is essential to preserve the sensitive heather and other heath flora consequently stopping its succession to woodland. This in turn enhances the habitat for heathland wildlife such as the Dartford warbler, which toughs out the whole year here, and the elusive smooth snake, which should be tucked up in hibernation by now. One of the main aims of The Great Heath Project is to involve, inspire and enthuse the local community to care for their local nature reserves; so was born The Great Heath Volunteer Work Party! This exciting new weekly volunteer team is located across the Great Heath Project area and committed to conserving and restoring our new reserves – e.g. Happy Bottom, Upton Heath, Arrowsmith Coppice… and more. The Great Heath team work
on these reserves on a weekly rotation, a detailed time table is on the website. So, lots of work to get stuck into with the occasional jacket potato to be eaten!! Come along every Wednesday 10am – 4pm and get involved with The Great Heath volunteer work party and make a difference to help protect your local wildlife, have fun and get active! Naturally good... This is similar to the classic cauliflower cheese but has the added kick of wholegrain mustard which pairs really well with the mature cheddar cheese. The recipe uses a small amount of corn starch/corn flour to thicken the sauce rather than using a traditional roux, this reduces the carbohydrate levels while still making a smooth creamy sauce.
MUSTARD & CHEDDAR BROCCOLI BAKE Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large head of broccoli 4oz (120ml) heavy cream (double cream) 3 oz (85 g) mature cheddar cheese (extra sharp cheddar cheese) 3 tbsp parmesan cheese (shredded) 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp corn starch (corn flour) dissolved in 1 tbsp water Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Method: Preheat the oven to 200°c
First prepare the broccoli by cutting it into even sized

florets. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the broccoli. Cook for approximately 3 minutes to slightly soften the broccoli, but not cook it through. Drain and rinse under cold running water to cool. Set to one side while you make the cheese sauce. To make the sauce, place the cream and mustard into a saucepan on a medium low heat, heat the mixture and once it comes to a simmer add the cheddar cheese and stir through until melted. While stirring add the corn starch mixture and continue to cook for a further minute or so until the sauce thickens, add salt and pepper to taste. Make sure that the broccoli is well drained - pat the broccoli dry with paper towels to remove any excess water. Place the broccoli into a baking dish and spoon over the cheese sauce; make sure the broccoli is well covered. Sprinkle over the parmesan cheese and a pinch of paprika if you wish. Place into the oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Only those with a sense of humour are invited to read... Poor Nellie has had a rough time of it this last month. Old girls need attention as the body does start to feel the signs of old age and ‘parts’ begin to slow you down and cause you trouble. We all know what that is like don’t we! It started with a blow out tyre going to see a friend in Swanage. What a let down. We were all fine, but Nellie’s laddered stocking needed a man to sort her out. Her rather large posterior with long skirts to cover it up just wouldn’t let our jack go beneath. Who can blame her! The RAC man was fantastic and came to the rescue. Nellie smiled, in a relieved sort of way, once he got her back on her feet with a temporary new high wheel to

How do we get that under there?? get her on the road again. The owners and staff at The Halfway Inn were such a welcome sight for me and Hayden who had a nice cup of tea and packet of crisps while we were waiting. Not a bad place to break down actually! As if that wasn’t enough. Just a few days before her MOT Nellie developed what I can only describe as rheumatoid arthritis. She was in pain, juddering as we were going along, she was just not happy at all. She stalled a couple of times, out of breath and panting. Hopeful as we were, we thought she would make it to the MOT. Not the case. The very day of the MOT Stephen and Hayden were in Ferndown delivering the magazines to our distributors. Nellie was working hard. Approaching the traffic lights at a busy crossing Nellie collapsed in complete exhaustion. Oh no, heart failure! It wasn’t a good place to stop and drivers were flashing at Nellie, hooting their horns. Not only was she ill, beat with overwork, but now people were telling her off too. It was all a bit much. (I have given her
29 some counselling since then and she is doing much better.) A very nice man, who is a mechanic himself, stopped to help with another helpful man, and together they were able to push poor Nellie (they must have been pretty strong as Nellie is a whopping great 2 tonnes) into the side street. Lost, forlorn, deflated, Nellie was not going anywhere. “Aaahhh” I hear you all say. Nellie’s alternator, otherwise know as her heart, was broken... As I was not in the van, Hayden called me on the phone to give me the traumatic news, “Nellie has broken down Mum!” He sounded so distraught. We have such an affinity for Nellie, she is part of the family, as you can see! Again the RAC man came to the rescue. (I hope our premium doesn’t go up...) He managed to resuscitate her enough for Stephen to drive her to ‘the car and van hospital’ at Longham Motor Engineers. We have known Ian and his ‘gang’ for a long time and if anyone could bring Nellie back to life, it would be him. They worked on Nellie all day, put her on the ramp to get to a good look at her under carriage, gave her a pace maker (alias new alternator), a blood tranfusion (diesel fuel conditioner) and a few new light bulbs to make her shine. Let’s face
Hurrah... Nellie is back on the road!
Nellie having her brakes serviced it what girl doesn’t like a bit of bling and even her name in lights! She also had her brakes cleaned so she can stop easily if she gets over excited and three new high wheels from Bob at Tyres of Ferndown, to really show off her voluptuous figure. Hayden and I were waiting nervously, wondering if Nellie would make it. Pacing the floor, tense conversations, it was all very stressful. Then Ian called and declared, “Nellie is ok!” She would live for at least another year... she had made it!! We were utterly relieved, exhausted ourselves and totally over the moon. All I can say after this traumatic experience, is please do not let anything really serious happen in the Corney household! This month I can happily say... Where will Nellie go next...? LEWIS Train Prices Train ticket prices are to logic what reindeer are to scrabble. In other words, they’ve nothing in common. If you want to save money on the train, take the logic book and throw it out of the window. While travelling by train can be cheap, efficient and easy, the pricing system is a mess. So to really hone down the cheapest priced tickets you need to understand and combine first the simple tips, then the bizarre… Book 12 weeks early for cheaper fares Most people know if you book early you’ll get cheaper advance train tickets. Yet it’s important to understand these are generally sold in tranches, in other words there’s a set number of each type, so the aim is to buy them before they go. The key time to look is around 12 weeks before you want to travel, as that’s when the timetable is set so most operators launch their advance tickets then or within a couple of weeks giving you maximum choice. So if you know you’ve got something pencilled in you need to travel to, diarise so you can be ready to pounce. Grab a (discounted) railcard There are more national railcards available than there used to be. These normally cost £30 (though often there are codes to discount this check on www.mse.me/traindeals) and reduce all fares by a third. Therefore if you’re likely to spend over £90 even on a oneoff trip it’s worth it. The main cards are… Family & Friends Railcard. Two people can be named on this, and then a named person and up to three other adults can travel and get 30% off the fare, providing you’re travelling with between one and four kids, who get 60% off. Two Together Railcard. This one’s relatively new. It gives two named people on the card providing they’re travelling together a third off. If you often travel with different people, you could be named on more than one card to cover the combinations. Senior Railcard. This gets over 60’s a third off. 16-25 Railcard. Also a third off, though it’s often cheapest to buy the 3 years card (and worth remembering to do it before your 24th birthday to give you maximum time). Get advance discounts late Never assume that you’re too close to travel to book an advance or discounted fare. Walk on fares are often far costlier than those even booked a day or so in advance. Always check via the rail companies own site. Check via sites like www.redspottedhanky.com, www.takethetrain.co.uk, www.eastcoast.co.uk and www.nationalrail.co.uk. Singles can beat returns Lots of top deals are only available on one-way fares and cheaper fares are often available for two single tickets, but not the return. Do a quick search for both options and work out the difference in price before you finalise your booking. Split tickets, not the journey Now it’s time to really throw the logic book out of the window to
make some really big savings. Instead of buying tickets for the whole journey, instead bizarrely buying tickets for its constituent parts separately can slash the price – even though you're travelling on exactly the same train, at the same time, possibly in the same seat. It's perfectly allowed within the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you buy tickets for. I’ve built a tool www.mse.me/ticketysplit that searches for variants for you to see if you can save. One of the best ever examples I’ve seen of this was on a direct London to Durham return when the cheapest ticket was £301. Yet buying four singles for the same journey: London to York, which was one of the stops, York to Durham, and then in reverse, was £82 for the same train at the same time - possibly even the same seats. However, it’s important to understand that this is an example - the savings vary train by train. Even an hour later the same split may not work, so you need to check each time or use the various web tools available to find your split. Look for hidden promos Lots of train companies have hidden promotions buried on their websites – which you won’t find if you’re going through a ticket booking website, such as TheTrainline.com or Redspottedhanky.com. For example, at the time of writing East Coast has 10% off some advance online fares and 50% off selected super off-peak tickets to London, while on Southeastern up to four kids can travel for £1 off-peak with an adult. For a full list of hidden promos go to www.mse.me/traindeals. Buy rail tickets when not travelling by train to get discounts This sneaky trick sounds bizarre but it works. National Rail offers 2for1 discounts on a host of attractions across the UK – you just download and print out a voucher and present it with a train ticket. Attractions include Ascot Racecourse, Alton Towers and Madame Tussauds. For example, if you wanted two tickets to London Zoo, as an adult ticket costs £24, providing the train ticket is less, it’s worth buying one even if you won’t actually go by train (just pop to a station on the way). Though of course it’s an even better saving if you’re actually using it. Know your train refund rights You may be entitled to money back for delays over 30 minutes, every operator has different rules. Technically the delay or cancellation needs be the operators fault, such as train or signal failures. Yet even when not, such as weather, strikes or maintenance work, some firms will pay out if you claim (as for a claim form when you arrive). More help in www.mse.me/ traindelays.

Family and friends raise £10,000 in memory of mum A TRIBUTE fund set up in memory of a much-missed mum struck down by cancer has raised in excess of £10,000 for Forest Holme Hospice Charity. Angie Simms, a popular district nurse from Corfe Mullen, sadly died aged just 55, following a five year battle with ovarian cancer. Angie, who has three children and four grandchildren was a keen netball player and enjoyed ‘hashing’ - a form of noncompetitive cross-country running with Wessex Hash House Harriers. She was a much loved wife, mum, ‘nangie’ and friend and was known for her wicked sense of humour, beautiful smile and love of adventure. Angie’s daughter Emma said, “She never let the cancer get her down and even went on eight mile ‘hash’ runs following an afternoon of chemotherapy. She was an inspiration to us all.”
Angie’s niece Hayley added; “Angie was still nursing and treating patients herself whilst suffering from cancer, she was a real life superwoman.” Following Angie’s death on 24 February 2014, Angie’s friends and family have been busy organising an array of fundraising events in support of Forest Holme Hospice, which cared for Angie during her final days. The most recent event organised by Angie’s husband, Martin, was a 100km social bike ride over the Jurassic Coast known as a ‘Bash’. Martin said; “Her family, friends and fellow hashers followed a trail that had been laid by volunteers, cycling up and down hills through the picturesque Dorset countryside. I’d like to say a big thank you to all those who faced the challenge and had fun, whilst raising money for such a worthy cause.” To date, Angie’s friends and family have raised a total of £10,754 in her name. Peugeot must have sprinkled fairy dust over its designers, because there are now some attractive motors in its automotive stable, including the 308.
The head-up instrument layout means that information can be clearly read easily and safely, looking over rather than through the wheel.
It’s no secret that the French firm hasn’t always produced beautiful motors – yet, conversely, Peugeot has created some of the most popular cars on the road.
The Peugeot also has a compact steering wheel and newly developed electric power steering, resulting in a responsive and controlled driving experience. My 1.6, 156bhp petrol powered ‘Feline’ model certainly impressed me with its ability to stick to the road and hug bends - even when pushed hard.
To bring more of a balance to the automaker’s looks department, the brand is moving up-market. It’s an initiative started several years ago and seen most recently with the 208 and 2008. The initial design brief of the New 308 had the highest levels of quality at its heart and that has been more than noticed already. Crowned 2014 European Car of the Year, at the Geneva Motor Show, the suave Peugeot offers a touch of technology, comfort and practicality. The new 308 is the fourth Peugeot model to be distinguished by the ‘Car of the Year’ accolade; it comes after the 307 (2002), 405 (1988) and 504 (1969). The appearance of the Pug is more akin to the latest Mercedes Benz A-Class than anything else. The front of the car is dominated by a ‘floating’ front grille and by a strong lighting signature. Slim full-LED headlamps glitter like diamonds and the striking illumination continues at the rear, with the three Peugeot lion ‘claws’ drawn by piercing red LED lamps. Inside, the 308 includes a touch-screen panel on the dashboard for added indulgence. It also has a practical purpose; it brings together many of the infotainment controls in one place, for ease of use and to create a contemporary and uncluttered cabin. Everything is arranged for an experience that is intuitive and relaxing so that you can focus entirely on the road ahead.
The car is stuffed to the brim with safety packages too. As well as multiple airbags it has an ‘Emergency Collision Alert System’, which gives out an audible warning should you get too close to the backside of someone else – or if you’ve just not braked in time. The 308 is also furnished with an ‘Emergency Collision Braking System’. This is a clever bit of gadgetry where, in the event of a possible crash, automatic braking is triggered to prevent the impact or reduce the consequences. What’s more, the five door car offers great fuel economy, without compromising too much on space. There’s plenty of room for luggage and shopping, as well as for you and your front seat passenger. Rear-seat travellers don’t have quite so much legroom, but headroom is fine and rest of the car is cosseting enough to provide a soothing ride. The new 308 is seriously worth considering if you’re after a medium sized family motor. The fact that the model will also be manufactured and sold in China indicates just how much belief there is in this car.

Santa Charity Skydive by Students from Bournemouth Arts University The Hadland Foundation, a local charity that provides help to ‘families in need’ is delighted to announce that as part of RAG, students from Arts University, Bournemouth (AUB) have decided to do a skydive with a twist to raise much needed funds. The students will jump out of a plane, 10,000 feet above stunning Wiltshire dressed as Father Christmas! The Santa Skydive will take place on Sunday 7th December at Old Sarum Airfield. Paul Reade, Hadland Foundation manager comments: “We are so excited that AUB RAG has chosen to do their charity Santa Skydive for us. We are a small, local charity and are very keen to work with the students. The support of RAG will ensure that we can help many local ‘families in need’ and have a big impact on the projects that we are working with.” The students have agreed to raise at least £145 each for the Hadland Foundation. Scott Heleniak, RAG Officer says: “We hope to have 20 or more students doing the skydive, including Dan Broadbent the AUBSU President. RAG stands for ‘raising and giving’ and the Hadland Foundation and the Santa Skydive fit perfectly with this.” Recently the Hadland Foundation made a grant to the Harrison Dilling Trust. Harrison, aged 5 has cerebral palsy. There is no cure for Harrison’s
condition and all forms of physical movement are extremely difficult. A specialist walker has now been purchased to allow Harrison to move around and join in with family activities. Dawn French in 30 Million Minutes Interview by Matthew Stadlen
When Dawn French takes to the stage for the first time on her one woman tour this summer she will be stepping into the unknown. One of this country’s most famous comedians, she has toured with her friend and comedy partner Jennifer Saunders and starred in a one woman play, but this is different. And she’s apprehensive. We’re sitting together in a Cornish hotel just up the lane from her home on the coast. French is 56 and her dark hair frames a face that is quick to break into a smile, giggle or full-hearted laugh. Her kneehigh boots are muddy, she explains, because she’s just back from walking her dog on the beach. French spent much of her childhood in Cornwall and moved back with her first husband, the comedian Lenny Henry, in 2006. The tour, though, is nationwide and will take in over 60 gigs in two stages. Talk of it both excites and seems to terrify her. “I’ve just eaten a little bit of the cushion with my bum thinking about it,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to [do it] and I think I’ve dodged it a bit. Because I’m aware that it’s a risk.” French will be directed by Michael Grandage. She was desperate to work with the man who ran the Donmar Warehouse for a decade until 2012. “I could have asked Fatty Saunders, but I thought, ‘I’m actually going to ask a proper grown up theatre person’,” she says. Eighteen months have passed since she first approached him, but she kept taking other jobs - a sign of her being “scared” - including a role as a judge on Australia’s Got Talent. The show is called 30 Million Minutes - because that’s roughly how long she’s been alive - but French still isn’t quite sure what it is. Instead, she makes a worried noise. “It’s not a stand-up show. It’s not a play. I guess it is a monologue because it’s just me talking. It’s a slide show to an extent.
But not JUST a slide show. It’s not like your awful, most feared auntie who’s just come back from Egypt where you have to sit and watch everything. It’s quite autobiographical, so I show you the people that have made me - so to speak. There’s quite a lot about my mum and dad.” Her grandmothers will also feature - ‘Good Granny’ and ‘Evil Granny’. Although Evil Granny did actually steal from her, she knew the nickname was a joke. “In fact she coined it - she thought the other one was so good.” French was born in Holyhead, Wales in 1957 when her father was stationed there with the RAF. But she spent much of her childhood in Cornwall and went to boarding school in Devon. At home, French was a performer and her dad was too. “He would tease me to discipline me. Very loving teasing. Lots of things were dealt with at that quite sophisticated level of lots of fun.” French’s father gave her confidence and she remembers a “key moment” when she was leaving for a party. “I’ve always been a big girl and shouldn’t really have been wearing hot pants,” she says. Her father, though, was supportive. “He told me I was completely beautiful and how amazing I looked in
41 them and that I would get loads of attention. So my dad gave me a sort of telling off that was about totally infusing me with confidence and I went on cloud nine to this party and I’ve actually never left that party. It was armour.” Three years ago, French revealed that she had lost seven and a half stone. She has since said that she put some of it back on. Eating, she tells me now, is very comforting. “It’s a lovely thing to do. We love tasting things. You don’t get to be spherical without liking eating things.” I point out that she isn’t spherical and she replies, “I’m less than I was.” She takes no credit when I tell her she’s beautiful. “But I suppose if you get very fat like I did you might be choosing to destroy some good stuff you’ve been given in terms of your health. That’s something you can address.” When she was just 18, French’s father Denys killed himself. Growing up, she and her brother had been shielded from his depression. It was, she says, “just like a bomb went off in our family. My mum of course would have known there was danger. He’d lived his whole life with [it but] this was in a time when you didn’t say you had mental illness if you were the head of a family. I still have sadness about it. Massive sadness. And I think it’s been a centre point of my life what happened with my dad.” Soon after her father’s suicide, French started at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London to do a teaching course. There she met Jennifer Saunders, with whom she would form a hugely successful comedy double act. The pair began to make names for themselves on the alternative comedy scene in the 1980s and their long-running TV show, French and Saunders, launched in 1987. Roles on television - including the lead part in the Vicar of Dibley - and in the theatre have followed. Now, with an autobiography and two novels also to her name, she is about to test herself again. French will, she assures me, be more revealing in her show than she has been before. But she’s not entirely easy with it being all about her. “It’s a little bit, ‘Aren’t I interesting?’ I keep saying to Michael Grandage, ‘I need to take this out,’ and he says, ‘Absolutely not - that’s the WHOLE point. Do NOT push it away from you. Absolutely own it and be completely strong and confident about that.’ And
so that’s what I’ve done.” She certainly doesn’t seem to be on an ego-driven mission. She’s doing the tour, she says, because she’s got things to say, thinks it could be fun and because she hasn’t done it before. “I don’t need loads of positive strokes for just being alive. What I want is people to turn up and see whether what I’ve written works.” That’s not to say, though, that there isn’t an element of attentionseeking in performance. “I think it’s the child in us that is saying, ‘Mum, Dad look at me.’ It’s need for approval which I think all humans have. But I think performers have it in a needy, slightly sick way. I have had it and I have understood it as that. I don’t think you can get up and do arsing about like I do without a bit of that going on, but I find it very unattractive - in myself and in other people. “I always see people in their nappies. Comedians, actors, whatever,” she says and laughs slightly. “I see them as a baby going,” and her voice turns high-pitched and hysterical, “’Mummy look, look!’ And if I watch Simon Russell Beale, Mark Rylance, Judi Dench, people who inhabit their characters properly, I don’t see them in a nappy. I watch their character and that’s that.” French and Henry were divorced after 25 years in 2010. They have an adopted daughter and still have a “great” relationship. He is, she says, a good man and they had a very good marriage for a very long time until it went a “bit dodgy” at the end. After their split, French found herself, in her fifties, going on dates. “I’m not good at flirting, I’m not good at being coy. I can’t do any of that sh*t. Find it absurd and ridiculous. What I’d rather do is give a questionnaire out and get people to tick boxes,” she says, laughing. “Speed dating - that’s what I should have done.” Now, she has found happiness with Mark Bignell who runs a charity. When she talks about him, she shuts her eyes in delight. They’ve just had their first wedding anniversary. “It’s so new. It’s completely thrilling. It’s almost too delightful. Spring Flowering Bulbs
Many bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils and snowdrops will increase naturally in most sites and with different flowering times there will be a succession of interest. If planted in your flower beds, the dying foliage will be hidden by growing herbaceous plants and shrubs. Bulbs are best planted in groups of similar colour and a wonderful show will be created if they are combined with flowers of contrasting colour that bloom at the same time. Try tulips planted with forget-me-nots or wallflowers.
Under trees with no leaves, bulbs will get any available sunlight so will grow happily and give a welcome splash of colour when nothing else has yet woken up. Bulbs can be planted in grass - perhaps in the lawn or a grassy bank - as long as the foliage has time to die down before the first mowing. Grass protects bulbs from mice and squirrels. Try Anemone blanda, chionodoxa, crocus, fritillaria, daffodils (narcissus). Some bulbs are best lifted each year such as tulips and to make this easier you could try planting them in large pots and sinking them in the ground. After the leaves have died down, lift the bulbs and let them dry out. Store somewhere cool and dry and replant in October/November for a spring display. If buying new bulbs, plant as soon as possible and before they start growing. For instance, most daffodils will start producing roots by late summer and other bulbs by midautumn. One exception is snowdrops. These are best bought 'in the green' which means the leaves are already growing and they are then planted and left to spread. Bulbs should always be planted with, at the very least, 2-3 times their own depth of soil above them or even more if the soil is very light. If bulbs become overcrowded, lift them in the dormant season after the foliage has died down. Clean off the soil, leave them to dry then store in paper (not plastic) bags to await replanting.

JEM’S HAT-TRICK OF AWARDS Dorset Under 17 cricketer Jem Warner picked up a hat-trick of awards at the annual county presentation ceremony on Friday.
17-year-old leg-spinner Warner won the three trophies after being chosen as LV= U17 Player of the Year, DCB Youth Bowler of the Year and DCB Youth Player of the Year. Warner topped the county bowling tables for the season and in the match against the Isle of Wight returned the stunning figures of seven wickets for just one run, a feat matched only by the West Indian fast bowler Curtly Ambrose. The Dorset U17 manager Tim Hill said: “Jem had an outstanding season and helped the team to win its group of the Under 17 County Championship”. Over the winter months Warner, who also plays for Premier League team Swanage, has been selected to train with the Academy at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Three hundred players and guests turned out for the awards event, which was held at the Goldsands Stadium in Bournemouth. The presentations were made by Lewis McManus - a former Dorset youth cricketer - who now plays for Hampshire and England Under 19

There is a vacancy for a volunteer Co-ordinator/driver and also drivers to drive one Sunday afternoon a month. More hosts to hold a tea party once or twice a year would also be welcome. Would you like to attend a tea party once a month and make a real difference to the life of a local elderly person and make them feel part of their community again?
We take out to tea, once a month on a Sunday afternoon, 12 months a year, local isolated elderly people, 75 into the 100’s. Our local family hosts welcome the group into their homes for a tea party, conversation and socialising. Often this is the only social activity that our guests attend and our guests really enjoy being part of a family for a few hours each month. This regular monthly outing makes a huge difference to the life of an isolated person and gives them something to look forward to and a chance to make new friends with a mixture of age groups. One of our guests told us, “I tell my four walls I can’t speak to them today; I have real people to talk to”. The tea parties are a free service. If you would like to attend a tea party and make some lovely new friends and really enjoy a very happy Sunday afternoon once a month, please contact:-
