Charity Providing Free Audiobook Memberships in Dorset Whether it’s discovering a new story or revisiting a classic, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in a book. Studies have shown that reading can improve wellbeing and improve relationships with others, as well as reducing the symptoms of depression or dementia.* But, when you find reading print or holding a book difficult, how can you keep reading? Audiobooks may have the answer. Listening to an audiobook removes the difficulty in decoding words, holding up a book, or turning pages, so you can relax and escape into another world. Listening Books is a national UK charity who provide an audiobook library service for anyone who finds that an illness, disability, specific learning difficulty or mental health condition affects reading print or holding books. They currently have free memberships available for anyone living in Dorset who would like to join the service, but
may not be able to cover the standard membership fees of between £20 and £45 per year. There’s no financial proof needed, but they do ask for a selfdeclaration that this cost would be a barrier to joining. Their library has over 8,000 audiobooks, including bestselling authors for all ages like J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Lee Child, David Walliams, Jojo Moyes, Jeff Kinney, and many more! Plus, they record exclusive educational titles to support the National Curriculum in their professional studios, so they aren’t available anywhere else. Audiobooks are available to download through an app available for tablets or smartphones, to stream online, or sent direct through the letterbox on MP3 CD with no postage costs or late fees. Rolling out across the entire Wessex region throughout May, Cakes4Cancer is a really simple way to come together with friends, family or colleagues and ‘bake’ a difference by asking for a donation in return for a cuppa and cake. Maria Tidy, Wessex Cancer Trust’s Community Engagement Manager, said: “We’re passionate about community at Wessex Cancer Trust, and believe everyone living with cancer should be able to get free and local emotional support whenever they need it. Cakes4Cancer is all about people coming together to enjoy something delicious for a great
cause. Your event can be as big or small as you want. You could put on a coffee morning at work, host an afternoon tea with friends or invite neighbours to come along to a bake sale. Whether it’s faked or baked, every cake sold could help change someone’s life for the better. This is an opportunity to learn about life in our country during the War Years - 1939 – 1945. Experience Living History with Home Front ‘Dad’s Army’ re-enactors, The Home Front Living History Museum, Churchill’s Secret Army, displays of 1940’s fashion, Pathe Newsreels from the 1940’s and an exhibition of photos and memorabilia from Weymouth in the 1940’s. Take part in the ‘Evacuee Experience’ with Nothe Fort guides and reenactors, visiting areas of the fort not normally open to the public – the Anderson Shelter, schoolroom, kitchen, washroom and 1940’s shop. There will be displays of military and civilian vehicles, 1940’s style live entertainment - music and dancing, & themed activities. Meet Warren and Winnie the Nothe Fort mascots. The Matchstick Fleet will be in residence. In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the DDay landings, this will be a great opportunity to see the work of Phil Warren. who has spent over 60 years creating scale models of hundreds the ships in the British Naval Fleet. A volunteer day on the heathland part of Upton Wood to cut back bracken. bramble and gorse to create more space for Heather to spread and grow. Hot and cold drinks will be provided at breaktime. Have your say on the future of Poole Poole’s Business Improvement District (BID) is looking for new volunteers to join its board of directors. Directors of Poole BID meet once a month to review the progress of work being carried out, discuss suggestions from levy payers, consider future plans for the town and play an important role in the development of the town centre. The BID currently has vacancies for directors in the following areas: • Area 3: this area runs from Lagland Street down to Bennetts Family Bakers and applicants must have an association with a business in this area. • Area 4: running from Bennetts Family Bakers to the junction of New Orchard and Old Orchard, as with Area 3, applicants must have an association to a business in this area. • Multiple Retail: open to applicants of any business within Poole town centre which has multiple sites, however, the additional sites can be outside of the BID area. • Licensed Business: for applicants of licensed businesses in Poole town centre only. Justin Hundley-Appleton, Poole BID manager, commented: “The board is instrumental in helping
the BID deliver on its business plan and meet its objectives. I work alongside the directors to deliver everything for our levy paying businesses, and in turn pass feedback and ideas from levy payers up to the board for their consideration. “We are keen to hear from local business owners and leaders who are commercially astute, but also have a flair for business leadership, as well as a passion to see the town develop and thrive.” Poole BID is also recruiting for a part-time business engagement executive. Talking about Wildlife...
Help with the health of heathland We all think of heathland as being either glorious (when the sun is shining on it) or wonderfully bleak (when lashed by wind and rain). But whatever the weather, we invariably think of heathland as being tough a sort of resilient and indestructible place. But in actual fact heathland is fragile. This is because heathland is largely occupied by heathers, and heathers are unusual and fussy plants. To start with, heathers are ‘dwarf shrubs’. This means that like all shrubs they are woody and brittle and so can be easily snapped. But unlike other shrubs they are low growing and thus very liable to be stepped on, when, unsurprisingly, they do not bend, but snap off. This is why heathers readily die when walked over, and new bare paths are so readily formed where they were not present before. And then heathers are ‘oligotrophic’. This means that they only do well where the ground is poor in nutrients. When the ground is poor they hold their own against plants that like it rich, but when the ground becomes Heather

rich, those other plants win the day. Dog poo, left to decompose naturally, makes the ground nutrient rich. This is why heathers are so easily ousted by lush green grasses and herbs alongside paths where dog poo is left. When we go out on our seemingly tough old heathlands, we should remember that appearances can be deceptive and that actually, like other old things, they are rather on the fragile side. So, keeping to existing main paths, even when a tad muddy, stops the heath becoming criss-crossed by many new ones (and makes it less likely that we will disturb those rare ground nesting birds in summer). And always picking up and removing dog poo helps to prevent those main paths becoming lined by widening bands of non-heathland (and avoids the health hazard which is just as relevant here as in formal open spaces). If we want our heaths to continue to provide for our needs, we do need to be aware of theirs. By Lesley Haskins

The Dorset Directories Camper Van “Daichi, The Dashing Dude” has finally made it! The NEW Dorset Directories Campervan has travelled across barren land and rough seas to get here. All the way from Japan, just to be with us. We love him! He is pearly white and is still wearing his posh kimono. Nellie had long skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, whereas Daichi likes to think he is rather sophisticated, debonair, and has an eye for the girl vans. In fact, “The Dashing Dude” as we have nicknamed him, is a play on words as he believes he is good looking, stylish and fashionable. It is all part of his charm. He also loves to run around and have fun. So, dashing he is, and otherwise known as “Dash” to his friends. Daichi is his official Japanese name, (dai) meaning “big, great” combined with (chi) meaning “wisdom, intellect”. As Daichi is full of himself and a little over confident, this seems rather appropriate. He even speaks Japanese when we switch on his purring, seductive engine. “Ha Dor!” and other words I have yet to discover the meaning of, he expels in a rather high pitched, very cute voice. (Don’t tell him I

Daichi gets the thumbs up! said that, boys do not like it.) We hope you like reading about his exploits and antics as he whisks us to exciting places around England and particularly here on the Southern Coast. Here’s to having some family fun… Our first trip was to Portland just along the coast from Weymouth. We had never been there before, and boy were we lucky with the weather. Dash was extremely happy. So were we. We climbed all the 165 muscle tasking steps up the Portland Bill lighthouse. What views from the top! Currently there is the amazing huge magnifying lamp which shines across the English Channel to warn our ships at sea of potential danger. The lamp will soon be replaced by a more modern system of LED lights. Sad really, but times move on as we all know too well. The majestic lighthouse demanding attention on the clifftop also has that eerie foghorn sound which haunts the waves in times of fog. There have indeed been a massive 113 shipwrecks along this coast, due to its shallow reefs and the strong Portland tidal race. Daichi decided to keep his nifty wheels firmly fixed on the solid ground.

29 A meal overlooking the crystal blue sea was a well-deserved treat after all that climbing. The café was a welcome sight. We ate outside! Portland of course is famous for its Portland Stone. Dash, knowing what boys are like and having empathy with Hayden our 15 year old active teenager arranged a “Geo Cache” hunt for us to do. Geo Caching is a modern-day treasure hunt. There are hundreds of walks you can find online. Some are still free, but there is now a small charge of around £20 for the year for the keener walkers. It is a fun way to follow coordinates and eventually find a box (the treasure!). The stones enroute, carved by artists, were quite amazing. A Falling man, chairs, hearths, octopus, bear, a whale and lots more. My favourite was the mythical Portland Dog Beast, the Roy Dog. Carved by Damien Briggs, this beast has fiery eyes, one green, one red and it was said that he lived in the Cave Hole where he would drag any travellers passing by, into its watery hideout. Brrr…. It even has the eyes of its victims embedded into its stony fur. Daichi is beginning to wonder about us Brits… We love our legends don’t we. Another way to explore our incredible homeland are Treasure Trails. Again, available online to buy at just £6.99

The Roy Dog in Tout Quarry Park per walk. Daichi chose the Pirates Graveyard one for us. (Is he trying to tell us something?). This was an intriguing walk along the coast and through the graveyard with skull and crossbones engraved in the stones. Contrary to popular belief, these are not pirates’ graveyards, but just images to ward off the evil spirits in the afterlife. The cove we passed, Church Ope, was gorgeous. We would love to go back there. There are stunning views from all over Portland. It really is a fantastic place to visit. It has seen busier times, with the Naval Base and the famous 18 mile long Chesil Beach where the American troops embarked on their journey to Nazi occupied France in the second World War. My Dad aged 83 told me that he, his Mum and sister regularly travelled to Portland all the way from Hull to see his Dad who was stationed there in the Royal Navy. He remembered a day when a German plane was flying down the coast, being fired at by our anti-aircraft guns from the beach. The exploding shells got closer and closer, until the plane dived and escaped! Today it is a gorgeous stretch of pebbled beach with crashing waves and wonderful sunsets. Daichi is ecstatic to be here with us. He thoroughly enjoyed his first trip and is very excited about where he will transport us to next… where will that be? By Debbie Corney

Parkstone Detachment: Dorset Army Cadet Force I’d like to take a moment to thank the Publishers of The Poole Directory for giving me the opportunity to share the news about Parkstone Detachment, Army Cadet Force. Since the first article, we have seen our numbers rise as we welcome nine new recruits this month alone who all now embark on their journey in the Army Cadet Force providing them with lots of opportunities and skills to enhance their lives now and in the future along with making new and lasting friendships. After Cdt Cpl Erin Blake’s triumphant victory at the South West Regional Championships, Blake was offered a position at Nationals to compete against Cadets from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Blake took a ten hour coach journey to Liverpool where the tournament took place which was then followed up by a day of training and bonding with the newly formed teams to build strength and unity against the opposing teams. The following day was ‘game day’ and Blake said “we were all eager and ready to start” Blake scored four goals for the team and overall they ranked second place at Nationals which is a huge achievement. Blake also added “the team and I did very well in the tournament. It was a really exciting day and I’m happy with our performance” Blake has once again made her Country, County and Detachment proud and we wish her the same success with her football coaching course. A huge congratulations to Cdt LCpl Ben Clark and Cdt LCpl Jakob Hayward on their promotion to Cadet Lance Corporal.
Cdt Cpl Erin Blake at the National Football Competition A promotion to Cdt LCpl is the first step on the rank slide ladder, and with it comes great responsibility to lead their fellow Cadets whilst also inspiring them to achieve greatness through being a role model. Both Clark and Hayward have shown a promising attitude to inspire whilst embodying the standards and values of the ACF. Within the first week of his promotion, Cdt LCpl Clark used his first aid skills to treat an adult who almost fainted from exhaustion. Clark caught the falling adult and sat them in a chair to regain strength, the casualty said “he was a great help in making sure I didn’t faint otherwise I would have hit my head”. Clark used his leadership skills to calm the situation and has already proved that he will be a fantastic influence to the Detachment, Clark added “I am glad that I had my first aid training when it was needed”. • Keep on earthing up your potatoes to prevent the tubers from turning green. • If you’re planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up. • With snow in April you’ll probably need to catch up with sowing crops that it was too cold for last month. • As the risk of frost passes, tender crops such as tomatoes or peppers can either be planted out, or on into grow bags. • Start winter greens such as cabbages, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts in a seedbed for transplanting to their final positions later. If you’ve lost seedlings or had trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too - with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same. There’s a good plant stand at the monthly farmers market, and several garden centres or local growers nearby. May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow
pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to 6 leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted too turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag. With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. If you planted beetroot seeds out in March or April the chances are that they’ll have suffered with the very cold weather that we had last month. Another row sown now may well give you much better results. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now.

Poignant gathering to take place to mark former Dorset airfield’s vital role in D-Day, 1944 A poignant commemoration marking the 75th anniversary of a former Dorset airfield’s vital role in the historic D-Day invasion of occupied Europe in June, 1944, is to take place where three waves of Halifax bombers took off – towing wooden gliders carrying soldiers bound for Normandy. The gathering to remember and honour those people who flew from, and served at, the Royal Air Force station at Tarrant Rushton takes place close to the site of the former airfield’s main gate on Sunday, 2 June, 2019, from 2pm. The commemoration venue is the former airfield’s stone memorial at ‘Windy Corner’ on the road to Witchampton – at postcode DT11 8SB – in the shadow of a black wartime aircraft hangar. The first British troops to land in Normandy in the first few minutes of D-Day, Tuesday, 6 June, 1944, flew in six Horsa gliders from Tarrant Rushton late on Monday, 5 June, 1944, to seize a vital bridge, near Caen, later named ‘Pegasus Bridge’ in honour of the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry troops. D-Day, 1944, saw two major lifts of Halifax bombers towing troop-carrying Horsa and the tank-carrying Hamilcar gliders bound for Normandy – 26 Halifaxes and their gliders taking off in the early hours of Tuesday, 6 June, 1944, with another 32 Halifaxes and gliders taking off in the early evening of D-Day. With the coming of peace, Tarrant Rushton airfield became the home to pioneering aviation research and manufacturing company Flight Refuelling in 1947, the company leaving the airfield in 1980 after which demolition followed. Flight Refuelling later became Cobham PLC which is based in nearby Wimborne. The Tarrant Rushton airfield D-Day 75th anniversary commemoration on the afternoon of Sunday, 2 June, 2019, is being organised by the Wimborne branch of the Royal Air Forces Association in Dorset. Branch chairman Eddie Robertson said: “Royal Air Force, Glider Pilot Regiment and Army veterans,
former Flight Refuelling airfield staff, their families, friends and anyone with an affinity with the former airfield – and its remarkable history across almost 40 years – are invited to attend and bring chairs. “Tarrant Rushton airfield has a remarkable and important history in times of both war and peace. The courage of its Halifax aircrews, glider pilots and airborne troops should be remembered and commemorated. The bravery and sacrifice of the men who failed to return after flying from the airfield should never be forgotten,” he added. Mr Robertson explained: “Between April, 1944, and May, 1945, Tarrant Rushton’s No. 298 and No. 644 Squadrons flew 2,284 missions into occupied Europe, from southern France up to Norway. “Twenty-seven Halifax bombers were shot down and more than 160 aircrew lost their lives – British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealanders and men from other Commonwealth countries. Also killed were glider pilots, airborne troops and the Special Operations Executive secret agents dropped behind enemy lines,” he added. The former Tarrant Rushton airfield is now a huge windswept 300 acre field of waving corn under the shadow of Badbury Rings between Wimborne and Blandford. Forest Holme mark 25th anniversary with Secret Garden Party at Upton Country Park Forest Holme Hospice has announced details of the biggest ball in the charity’s history to mark its 25th Anniversary this year.
Forest Holme, said, “2019 marks 25 years since Friends of Forest Holme - as it was known then - was set up to raise funds for the new specialist palliative care unit.
The Secret Garden Party will be taking place during Hospice Awareness Month in the beautiful surroundings of the Walled Garden at Upton Country Park on Saturday 8th June.
“Since then, donations from supporters have helped the hospice to care for around 20,000 adults and their families and the charity has grown to meet the increasing demand for the hospice services.
Tickets for this very special event will include a Welcome Drink, delicious 3-course meal, with 1/2 bottle of wine, plus entertainment from Chic and Nile Rogers tribute band Le Freak. Forest Holme Hospice opened its doors in 1994 and since then has provided individually tailored quality care and support to around 1,000 adults each year across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck, with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses such as Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s, heart disease and respiratory illness. At the launch of the 2019 BIG Sleep Easy, YMCA Bournemouth urges businesses to get involved, make a difference... and not to be afraid to shout about it In March, local charity YMCA Bournemouth held an evening function at Tiien Restaurant in Bournemouth to launch their annual sponsored ‘rough sleeping’ event: the Big Sleep Easy. This year’s event, which will involve teams from local organisations braving the cold to sleep outside for a night to raise funds and awareness of homelessness, will take place at Bournemouth Sports Club (Chapel Gate) on Saturday 16 November. At the launch event, around 40 representatives of local businesses and organisations who had expressed an interest in taking part in this year’s Big Sleep Easy gathered at the popular Thai restaurant to enjoy a buffet sponsored by Lester Aldridge solicitors. The company had been enthusiastic participants at last year’s event and emerged as its most successful fundraisers. Matthew Barrow, Managing Partner at Lester Aldridge, said: “We all found it incredibly tough. It gave us a tiny glimpse of how hard it must be as a way of life. Homelessness is something that could happen to anyone and we
are happy we are able to support such a worthwhile and effective project. If you are considering taking part this year, we’d really encourage you to do so – we’ll certainly be there!” Attendees at the launch watched a video of the 2018 Big Sleep Easy which showed teams building cardboard shelters – some practical and others, such as one with vape smoke emerging from its chimney, distinctly curious – before wrapping up warm and settling down for the night. It conveyed the overwhelming positivity and camaraderie of an event that saw 98 participants raise a record-breaking £25,000. Speakers on Friday included individuals who had themselves experienced homelessness and the one-to-one support services provided by YMCA Bournemouth. The audience sat quietly as they heard about the difference the charity had made to their lives. Tastes so good...
CREAMY BACON AND CHICKEN PASTA
If you’re struggling for a unique but simple recipe for either a dinner party or just a nice evening in, this is perfect. You can add garnish of your own or even any leftover basil to the finished dish for serving.
Ingredients for 4 servings 3 tbsp olive oil 5 rashers of bacon 3 large boneless chicken thighs 1 clove of garlic 300ml double cream Pinch of Salt Pinch of freshly ground black pepper Fresh basil (a handful) 450g farfalle pasta 200g cheddar cheese (grated)
Equipment: Large pan, frying pan Method: In a large pan, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions, adding a pinch of salt to the water. While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Cut the chicken into strips and the bacon into small squares before adding to the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes, until the chicken is golden brown. Crush the garlic clove and add to the frying pan with the chicken and bacon. Cook for a further minute. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper, then add the cream and warm through. Drain the cooked pasta before adding the creamy mixture into the large pan. Before serving, tear up the fresh basil and add to the mixture along with the grated cheese. Add some garnish for a finished look and enjoy!
