Well we certainly had a cold spell for a while but spring is officially here on 20th March! A time many of us look forward to. New life, new growth and warmer weather! Time for a spring clean and out with the old and in with the new. I love it. Next month we will have our first adventure with “Daichi The Dashing Dude”! Parkstone Detachment: Dorset Army Cadet Force I’d like to take a moment to thank the publishers of The Poole Directory for giving me the opportunity to share the news about the Parkstone Army Cadet Detachment. We are part of Dorset Army Cadet Force (ACF) and parade twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays 19:15-21:30. The ACF is a national uniformed youth organisation for young people aged 12-18 years of age, based upon military lines and sponsored by the MOD who provide uniforms, equipment and training facilities. It is important to note however there is no compulsion for Cadets to commit to serving in the armed forces, although some do chose this as a career path. The Cadets follow a progressive, structured syllabus designed to build confidence, resilience, leadership and teamwork as well as practical skills such as first aid. The topics covered include: Drill & Turnout, Shooting, Skill at Arms, Navigation, Fieldcraft, Expedition Skills, Physical Training, Military Knowledge and Cadet in the Community. As the Cadets progress and gain experience, they may also have the chance to do things like parachuting or take part in events such as the Ten Tors Challenge. There is also a strong SI Wheeler-Clayton with the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award element
Cadets on a Fieldcraft Exercise of Sports within the ACF with Cadets representing their Detachments, Companies and County before representative honours at a regional and then national level. In addition, the Cadets have the opportunity to undertake recognised BTEC / ILM Qualifications as part of their training as well as taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme. I have recently been awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at St. James Palace in the presence of HRH Prince Edward (04/02/19) which was an incredible honour and an unbelievable experience, I believe this is an amazing journey to enhance their future. This has been a brief introduction to what we do but in the coming months I’ll keep you up to date of our activities and achievements. The Flying Scotsman @ Swanage Railway The most famous steam locomotive in the world, Flying Scotsman, is due to visit the Swanage Railway and be reunited with a rare Devon Belle Pullman observation carriage for the first time in almost 50 years. Between 1969 and 1972 Flying Scotsman ran with the Devon Belle Car 14 during a tour of the US. The company running the tour went bankrupt and Flying Scotsman was returned home but the Pullman observation carriage remained in the US. Flying Scotsman will

Talking about Wildlife...
Species of the month
Can you remember the last time you saw a hedgehog? Or a robin? Did you used to see them, but perhaps not recently? These are the kinds of questions that we, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), need the answers to. And we’d like the public to help us.
In 2015 DWT started a citizen science project, ‘Species of the Month’ – asking the public to let us know when they’ve seen a certain species for each month of the year. Since, not only have thousands of records flown in, but so have your anecdotes about wildlife experiences, with many of you sharing your delight from a regular or occasional wildlife visitor in your local patch or garden. Recording and looking for both rare and common wildlife allows conservationists to monitor peaks and declines in wildlife populations. Something that’s in abundance now, might not be in 5 years’ time and these records could help identify trends to understand why this has happened. Wildlife also doesn’t recognise boundaries – it goes anywhere there is habitat and food, so recording what’s in your garden or local green spaces is just as important as conservation teams recording which species are on nature reserves. So, this new year, can you ‘look out’ for wildlife? Past species we’ve been interested in finding out more about include the easily identifiable robin, brimstone, house sparrow and hedgehog. If it’s something a little rarer, we’ll give you all the information you need to be able to identify it. In March we’re looking for the bee-fly pollinator, to kick start our Get Dorset Buzzing campaign!

ABOUT THE DARK-EDGED BEE-FLY
The Dark-edged Bee-fly, or ‘Large Beefly’, looks rather like a bumble bee, with a long, straight proboscis that it uses to feed on nectar from spring flowers, such as primroses and violets. It is on the wing in the early spring, when it can often be seen in sunny patches. In flight, it is even more like a bee as it produces a high-pitched buzz. This species of bee-fly is common, but the Heath and Mottled Bee-flies are much rarer.
HOW TO IDENTIFY
Looking like a bee, the Dark-edged Bee-fly has yellowy-brown hair on its body, long, spindly legs, and a long proboscis. The wings have dark markings along their leading edges, hence it’s common name. There are several species of bee-fly in the UK, which can be very difficult to tell apart; the Darkedged Bee-fly has a dark edge, while others have plainer, translucent wings. By Sally Welbourn

Star Wars Dame backs campaign to raise funds for emerging artists Renowned stage and screen actor Harriet Walter, who has a home in Dorset, has welcomed a campaign by Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, to raise funds to create new work, support emerging artists and expand its learning programmes for local schools and young people. “It is so important to keep this beacon of arts, education and entertainment available for the use of everyone in the area, especially for the young who are the performers and audience of the future,” says the RSC actor whose credits include films such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Atonement and Sense and Sensibility, as well as hit television series The Crown, Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife. And she has fond memories of Lighthouse from the 2003 tour of Terence Rattigan’s play The Deep Blue Sea – “At last I was playing at my local!” she says. As part of a year-long celebration of its fortieth anniversary, the Lighthouse 40 campaign received hundreds of donations from individuals, community groups, arts organisations and corporate bodies. The largest arts centre outside London, Lighthouse plays an essential part in the delivery of national and regional arts strategy, both as a receiving venue for national and international theatre, music, dance, contemporary circus and film and in supporting the creation of new work and artist development. It also provides a home for Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. A keen supporter of the arts who was made a Dame for services to drama, Harriet Walter is patron of Dorset School of Acting, resident at Lighthouse since 2010, and stressed the social value of such venues, adding: “Communities need the arts as much as they need business and I hope funders will recognise the long-term benefits of investing in Lighthouse as a centre for young people to access live theatre and arts education.” In donating the proceeds from its end of year Level 4 Diploma student showcase to Lighthouse 40, Dorset School of Acting’s co-founder and principal Laura Roxburgh says: “We are absolutely passionate about Lighthouse and the opportunities that can be created here for young people. Education and the arts are under growing financial pressure, so organisations have to look at ways in which we can help and support each other in order to reach out to and nurture
the next generation.” Dorset Acting School is now recruiting for a new two-year Vocational Sixth Form in Acting course, fully funded by the local education authority. Starting in September at Lighthouse the course is equivalent to an extended BTEC or three A-levels and provides a Level 3 award for 16 to 19-year-olds. Bournemouth Symphony Chorus donated proceeds from last October’s concert performance of Karl Jenkins’s The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace in which all the musicians donated their services to help fund an annual programme of opportunities for young people to engage in the arts. The present and two former chairs of Poole Arts Trust, the charity the runs Lighthouse, also made donations with current chair Mike Jeffries contributing proceeds of an exhibition of his watercolours and his predecessor David Pratley performing a recital of Richard Rodney Bennett’s musical setting of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Talbot Village Trust gives charity a boost to help disadvantaged children Talbot Village Trust has helped the local charity, Ashley’s Birthday Bank, launch the ‘Ashley Bear’ initiative which supports children affected by domestic violence and neglect.
in their lives. Ashley’s Birthday Bank works hard to highlight the need that there is across the county for these children and their families to be supported through its crisis service.
The ‘Ashley Bear’ project has been created by the charity to provide children across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch with a teddy bear if they have been exposed to or affected by domestic violence. The £1,800 grant received from the Trust enabled the charity to purchase 300 ‘Ashley bears’ and will bring the children comfort. So far the bears have been distributed to the local women’s refuges, social workers, police liaison officers, and abuse counsellors.
“In order to continue serving our local communities, the charity relies solely on donations from local companies and individuals, and we would like to encourage others to back this cause if they can.”
Anna Selby, chairperson of Ashley’s Birthday Bank, said: “We were delighted to receive funding for our ‘Ashley Bear’ initiative. We have already received positive feedback that suggests the bears became a companion for the children and someone to talk to when they were feeling sad or lonely. Report urges retirees to register LPAs to avoid ‘later-life financial crisis’ A new report suggests that four-fifths of retirees who are taking advantage of pension freedoms may face a ‘later-life financial crisis’. According to a report from Zurich, the risk – estimated to affect 345,000 retirees – stems from their lack of having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), potentially hindering them from obtaining financial help should they become ill or lose mental capacity. Without providing a family member or trusted friend with the legal authority to make this kind of decision, the Courts would have to become involved should the individual no longer be able to make decisions themselves. Commenting on the findings of the report Mr Skilton of Dorset & Wight Wills highlighted the important purpose which LPA’s serve in later life decision making, particularly since the pension freedoms were introduced.
He said: “Registering an LPA has become even more important since the pension reforms. Thousands of people are now making complex decisions on their pension into old age, when the risk of developing a sudden illness or condition such as dementia increases. “Despite this, many are unprepared for a sudden health shock or a decline in their mental abilities. The time to set up an LPA is well before you need it, and pension providers should be highlighting this to their customers. “With more and more people moving into drawdown, this is creating a ticking time bomb that could leave thousands of people facing a potential later-life financial crisis. It is vital that people plan for a time when managing their pension might become hard, or even impossible, and speaking to Dorset and Wight Wills is one of the best ways to do this.”

‘Walk For Hope’ Means Cancer Patients Never Have To Walk Alone Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its third year on Sunday 9 June, and organisers would love more walkers than ever to stride out and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer. About 300 people took part in the 2018 walk, raising over £50,000. New for 2019 is the option of a five-mile route, alongside the ten and 20-mile distances, making the event even more accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities. Philip Wilson, who raised £670 by taking part in the ten mile event in 2018, said: “I work for John Lewis in Southampton which chose Wessex Cancer Trust’s Waterside Cancer Support Centre in Hythe as its charity of the year, and wanted to take part in this event to show my personal support to those living with cancer. What an emotional day it was. I met people who’ve had cancer and won, have cancer and are winning, and someone who has cancer but it’s incurable. I burst into tears Philip Wilson
reading the dedications on people’s backs, I had a moment in the middle when I thought about the many people I’ve known throughout my 38 years whose lives have been affected by cancer, and again when I crossed the finish line out of sheer pride. Individuality Swimming was formed by Kristin Maguire in 2002 to deliver swimming lessons to meet swimmers’ individual needs, as individuals we sometimes need that extra helping hand to achieve what we want in life. Your swimming journey can start with our Aqua Natal classes, following the birth you can move to one of our very popular Parent and Baby classes. We actively encourage both parents to take “baby” swimming, and currently have quite a lot of dads in our classes. Parent and Baby classes are a great opportunity for skin to skin contact with baby which helps in the bonding process. Gardening Tips
On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!
Jobs for March :-
• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will
help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Free monthly kids’ club returns to the Dolphin Shopping Centre Back by popular demand for 2019, Little Fins for preschoolers, had its first event of the year on Wednesday February 20 at Poole’s Dolphin Shopping Centre. This month’s Little Fins will have a ‘The Future of Fashion’ theme, where children can enjoy interactive storytelling and soft play from 9.30 to 11.30am. The free activity session will provide beanbags, rugs and cushions for extra comfort during storytelling sessions. Colourful stickers and a range of pens will be available to decorate colouring sheets. Little guests will be able to play with the mini juke box, neon bead necklaces and neon boxes tiered stands. Youngsters will also be able to colour and decorate their own Rubik’s Cube, using stickers and bright colours. Little Fins is run by the award-winning Crafty Arty World and takes place in an area outside the Beales department store. Booking is not required to attend. The shopping centre will be hosting Little Fins for parents and children every third Wednesday of the month, from February through to October 2019. Each session will include a meet and greet with a guest
character, a pop-up soft play area and mini art and craft sessions. Themes for Little Fins this year, include: March – The Future of Fashion April – Flower Power May – 2020 June – The Popping 90s Films July – Happy Birthday Dolphin August – The Future of Shopping September – The Millennium October – The Fun of Today John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, commented: “We’re extremely pleased to announce the return of Little Fins. Vivamente Voices extend a warm invitation to their fifth annual singing event “Come and Sing!”, is an all-day event with something for everyone regardless of whether or not you have any singing experience. The day starts with a fun vocal warm up followed by a choice of workshops to indulge in including, choral, barbershop and musical theatre. The festival of singing day concludes with an evening concert showcasing the different singing styles, confirmed guests are The Southern Union Chorus, barbershop quartet Chromatix, Cantilena Voices and soloist Paul Michael. Beryl Bikes for Bournemouth & Poole as Bike Share operator announced for Spring 2019 Bournemouth Borough Council and Borough of Poole Council have partnered with preferred operator Beryl to deliver an innovative Bike Share scheme across the conurbation. The Councils and Beryl have partnered for a five-year contract to provide Bike Share across Bournemouth and Poole. The distinctive emerald green bikes will soon be a familiar sight on the streets and will be available for instant hire via the Beryl App. The App tracks the GPS location of the bike allowing users to easily access and unlock any Beryl bike simply using a smartphone. The scheme will be launched in spring/summer 2019, with an initial 50 brand new bikes conveniently distributed for use at key destinations including rail and bus stations, town centre shopping areas and tourist attractions. The gradual roll out of bikes will eventually increase to around 1,000 bikes by the summer months, available for instant hire. The Beryl bikes have three speed gears and a step through design, with fully adjustable handlebars and seats for a wide range of riders, from 4’11” to 6’5”. The App can be downloaded on the Apple app store for iPhone, and the Google Play Store for Android users. Riders can choose to pay each time they cycle, or take up an annual membership. Users will be informed of the location of ‘Beryl Bays’, the preferred parking locations to leave the bikes. However, the scheme is designed with flexibility in mind and will allow users to park the bikes elsewhere, provided they are safely within the scheme area. Operators will keep track of all the bikes and will “rebalance” them as required to maximise availability. Beryl has experience in bike share innovation, having been a lighting and technology partner to Transport for London bike share, and providing lights to the bike hire schemes in New York, Montreal and Glasgow. The British company already operates two corporate dockless bike share schemes in London and is accredited with Bikeplus, which is the agreed standard of Best Practice for the industry. Philip Ellis, Beryl CEO said: “We are really pleased
to be working with Bournemouth Borough Council and Poole Borough Council to bring our bike share system to the area. We will be calling on our experience working with world-class bike share schemes, such as those in London and New York, to provide the best service possible in Bournemouth and Poole.” Councillor Mike Greene, Cabinet Member for Transport, Cleansing and Waste for Bournemouth Borough Council said: “I am delighted that we are partnering with Beryl to deliver an innovative Bike Share solution for our conurbation. The scheme will be a convenient, flexible and affordable option for both residents and visitors to our area.” Councillor Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation for Borough of Poole stated: “I am looking forward to trying the Beryl bikes and am certain that the ability to hop on and off will prove attractive in encouraging more people to take up cycling.” There is no initial or ongoing cost to the Councils and Beryl will be responsible for supplying the bikes plus associated equipment as well as management and maintenance of the service. Beryl will also be investing in local cycling infrastructure in the area to ensure maximum efficiency for those riding. Future developments include the introduction of a fleet of electric bikes for hire and potential expansion of the scheme into Christchurch. Businesses will also be offered the use of shared electric cargo bikes to assist with local deliveries and help cut both carbon emissions and congestion.

Naturally good... Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears
Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c. 2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump. 3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture. 4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions). 5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath). 6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish). 7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight. 8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized. 9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.
