Dear Poole Residents, With our FANTASTIC increase in circulation and over 15,000 individual homes and businesses now receiving The Poole Directory, all delivered by Royal Mail, we really are getting the names of local businesses to you! We do hope you enjoy reading and using our well loved, local publication. Nellie is the Dorset Directories campervan and is trying to take responsibility for Hayden’s welfare as you can read on pages 22 and 23. It seems to be working! We have also managed to book a holiday in April on the Greek island of Santorini! Some may remember that I fell in love with this island last year on our cruise with Mum and Dad, for Dad’s 80th Birthday. When I saw a bargain on the internet I couldn’t resist. We will be right on the volcanic Perissa beach, so I will certainly get to gaze at the magnificent waters again. Then in August we have booked a camping trip! Nellie can hardly contain herself and is really excited about taking us to Devon where Hayden will enter his first surf life saving competition in the sea. It is always good to have something to look forward to, don’t you think? For now it is work and sorting the house and garden out. There is quite a bit to do. Did you make lots of New Year’s resolutions and are still successfully carrying them out? I do hope so. Talking about Wildlife...
The March Hare The sight of a brown Hare, poised for action at any moment, is a wonderful thing, and for many is something they’d like to tick off their wildlife bucket list. In the South West, a quarter of the estimated 800,000 population of Hares can be found. Here in Dorset we are blessed with a few hotspots for Hare watching, including Chesil Beach, Cranborne Chase and the Cerne Valley. If you are lucky enough to see one, the chances are it won’t stay around for long. With the ability to run up to speeds of 45mph these sprightly and athletic animals are well-equipped for survival in harsh habitats, which is often in the open, exposed to the elements. In addition to being the UK’s fastest land mammal, they also have near-360 degree vision. One thing Hares are well known for is their ‘boxing’ abilities during the breeding season. This display of aggression, which is usually females denying persistent partners, can be observed in spring and summer. The frenzied display is the reason they’ve earned their reputation ‘mad as a March hare’.
However, Hare numbers are sadly dwindling, with a 75% decline in their populations since the Second World War. There are many complex reasons for this decline, including intensification of agriculture and changes in the patterns of land use. Their ideal habitat is grassland and arable areas, and rather than burrowing like rabbits, they create shallow forms in the grass, and use woods, hedges or fields, where they rest during the day. However when disturbed they can be seen bounding across fields, using their powerful hind legs to propel them forwards, often in a zigzag pattern! Whilst Hares can be seen all year round, as they don’t hibernate, it is often easier to see them in the early morning and late evening this time of year, due to lack of foliage in the landscape. Whilst in times gone by it was considered ‘bad luck’ for a hare to cross your path, seeing a Hare is a rare and wonderful sight – just make sure you’re quick with your camera if you want to capture the moment. Harbour Poole chapter takes top spot in Dorset! At our recent regional awards ceremony, during International Networking Week, the Harbour Poole chapter of BNI (Business Networking International) took the top position in Dorset! BNI’s philosophy is “givers gain”. “If I give you business, you will want to give me business.” Like any good business, the Harbour Poole chapter monitors the performance of each member to make sure they get the most out of their membership. Members are trained and mentored on how to achieve their own personal business goals as well as how to help other members of the group. Caroline Crane, who runs a Slimming World group at Salterns Hotel, Lilliput (Poole) every Monday and Parkstone United Reformed Church, Poole every Wednesday, was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to the Australian heartthrob when he swapped Ramsay Street for the annual Slimming World Awards. He co-hosted the event with the organisation’s chair and founder Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Caroline said meeting Jason was a wonderful way to round off a fabulous year for her groups, as well as a great way to get ready for another successful 12 months: “I couldn’t be prouder of the members of my Lilliput and Commercial Road groups. They’ve lost fantastic amounts of weight throughout 2015, with many of them making their weight loss dreams come true by hitting their target weight, improving their health and more. “It’s so rewarding to see people being able to do things that they didn’t think possible before losing weight, whether that’s wearing smaller clothes, taking up new hobbies, reducing medication or being able to do more with their family and friends. Every week I feel so lucky to play even a small part in people’s achievements and I felt very honoured to represent both groups when I met Jason. The Adventures of Nellie
The Dorset Directories Camper Van Oh boy did we had a fright a few weeks ago when Nellie found herself in snow near East Grinstead! After a day of being parked in the freezing cold she refused to move, or at least her engine did start but she screamed out in pain and gusts of smoke flew from her nostrils. (It is one way we women can make a point...) I wasn’t there and when Stephen called me to say he was awaiting the RAC man, I was worried. As you know Nellie certainly is not as young as she used to be, has done a lot of running around, and her arthritis can get her down. Would she pull through? Would she get back on that motorway? Well, amazingly she did. The belt around her power steering had slipped and once back in place she stopped yelling and the smoke diminished. Now can you believe it? As a result of this incident Nellie now has a friend, and one she is rather fond of. Stephen has bought himself a handsome car of steel, full of gusto and muscle (Nellie will have to watch herself). It is a Mazda RX8, silver and definitely has charm. “Mighty Rex” we have named him. The excuse for buying the car was to help Nellie. Ummmm... Stephen sold me well on that one. After all Nellie is getting on a bit and since I had started all those awful thoughts of “which home would we put her in, how would we tell her and how would she take it?” etc etc, it seemed a good solution all round. Nellie has now had a rest for a week in the garden but will still be taking us for many a trip here in the South. Phew... Like a lot of us older ladies, there is life in her yet! (Especially now she has Mighty Rex to share the garden with...)
Nellie with Mighty Rex in the gardem At the other end of the scale, something else we parents and grandparents worry about is how to keep the children off the computer for at least some of the time each day. Let’s face it we never had computers in our day and Nellie remembers many a good afternoon running around in the garden playing hide and seek, making a den with old blankets, climbing trees and otherwise being a nuisance to the neighbours with footballs landing in hedges and tennis balls banging continuously against garage doors. It doesn’t seem to happen like that these days. No, we have computers. In fact I often answer a question Hayden seems to ask only to find it isn’t me he is talking to at all, but is busily chatting away to his friends on Skype! Oh it is so different. Nellie worries about this but manages somehow to get Hayden out of the house. Hayden loves swimming and has been a member of “Swim Bournemouth” for a couple of years now. Nellie loves to take him to his sessions, up to 5 times a week in fact, and watch him glide through the water like a seal. Recently a friend from the club suggested Hayden try and get into

29 the Surf Life Saving Club at Branksome. Not to miss an opportunity, Nellie excitedly sold the idea to Hayden who was more than happy to give it a go. After all they swim in the sea in the summer! Well last week Nellie took us to our first Surf Life Saving Competitions. How exciting! It is all very new to us so we went along not knowing what to expect and told Hayden, who has had all of 4 lessons now, to do his best and enjoy himself. We absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was invigorating. We shouted so much and cheered with all our might that Nellie couldn’t toot her horn the next day, she was so hoarse. One race was so close and Hayden and his partner won! The aim was for the rescuer to paddle on a board to the ‘patient’, 25 metres away at the other end of the pool, and get the patient aboard so both could return as quickly as possible. Balancing on the board is a skill in itself, so paddling at full speed in unison with your partner takes some doing. Like all good Mums I have it on video… and am deafened by my own voice. (No change there then.) Another race involved the mannequins which for the ‘nippers’ ie the younger ones, were only half filled with water, so they are not so heavy. Heads in the water causing your poor patient to drown are disqualified which is probably just as well.

The mannequin race in the pool If Nellie was ever to fall in the water she would want to be able to breath. All good fun but such a great skill to have. The young teenagers who have been doing this for some time, are fully responsible for the younger ones and become their coaches so you can imagine the rapport between them all. Such great team work. It is so good to watch them all working together. One of the most difficult parts of the whole competition was the rope throwing one. Pulling in the rope so that it does not knot, throwing it with skill so it doesn’t coil back on itself or not quite reach your patient is really quite difficult. Observing the experienced adults do this, as opposed to the young nippers, there was no comparison. It was clear that this was a skill acquired with lots of practice! So Nellie has succeeded in getting Hayden even more out of the house and off his computer. She is very proud of herself. Hayden is learning a new skill and we are really pleased. Enjoyment all round and a win - win situation. Well done Nellie! It’s a great way to meet new friends and enjoy sport Bowls is a very simple game to learn, but one that will keep challenging you from start to finish and whatever ability you attain you are certain to get a game in one of our teams. We play daytime, evening and weekends. It is a team game where everyone helps one another and there is a strong but friendly competitive spirit. Poole Park Bowls Club, situated in the middle of Poole Park, is a friendly club that always welcomes newcomers and has a strong social side. • Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will
help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Tastes so good...
SMOKEY BACON AND TOMATO PASTA
This recipe is perfect if you want something that is not time consuming but also tastes very nice. You can serve this dish with garlic bread or without and also have the option to top it off with grated cheese or parmesan.
Ingredients 400g of spaghetti 120g of smoked bacon (cut into cubes) 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 400g can of chopped tomatoes 500g of passata 1 tbsp. olive oil 2 tsp smoked paprika Grated cheese or Parmesan (optional)
Equipment: Large pan, non-stick frying pan Method: Fill the large pan with water (adding a pinch of salt) and bring to the boil. Then cook the spaghetti following any instructions on the packet. Keep checking throughout and turn down the heat when cooked. While you leave that to boil, heat the oil in the frying pan and cook the bacon. Do this for just under 4 minutes until the bacon is crisp. Then add the onion and cook until crisp again for 3-4 minutes before adding the garlic and the smoked paprika. Stir together well. Then pour in the chopped tomatoes and passata, bring to the boil for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens. Make sure to stir often to avoid anything sticking to the bottom of the frying pan. Then drain the pasta before putting it back in the large pan and adding the tomato and bacon mixture. Stir the mixture and the spaghetti together. Finally, serve by adding either grated parmesan or cheese on top depending on your preference.
