Talbot Village Trust provides grant to Poole Food Bank Talbot Village Trust has donated just under £2,000 to Poole Food Bank, run by Faithworks Wessex, to purchase additional storage for the expanding food donations the charity receives. The number of local people who rely on Poole Food Bank has risen by 20 per cent over the past year, which has meant a shed was purchased using the Trust’s donation, to create extra storage and allow food to be stored safely. Gill Payne, Poole Food Bank coordinator, said: “We are so grateful for the generous donation to Poole Food Bank. We have been able to purchase additional shelving and a storage facility that enables us to continue to operate safely, as the need for this project grows, to meet an everincreasing demand.” Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “Poole Food Bank is a crucial service and is relied on by many in the community to provide them with access to food, as well as offering advice on debt management and cooking on a budget. The increase of people using Poole Food Bank has led to the need for the charity to expand,
and we are thankful to be given the opportunity to help support this cause, which in turn helps so many people across the county.”
Poole Food Bank is open weekly on Tuesday to Friday from 9.30am until 12.30pm, except on Friday when it closes at 12pm. The charity accepts food donations during its opening hours and if you would like to join the team of volunteers please call 01202 669566. Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the end of January 2019. Flock to Poole Harbour
January is traditionally a dark and dismal month, but for over-wintering birds, this is a busy time of year, and Poole Harbour is one place we can guarantee will be bursting with (bird) life. During late summer and autumn birds start arriving back onto the Brownsea Island lagoon to over-winter. The unique location of the lagoon means it provides shelter and food sources in abundance, but its shallow waters mean it’s also still accessible for birds when the rest of the harbour is under deeper water. It’s also a thoroughfare for birds flying from far flung corners of the globe, who use the lagoon to rest and eat before migrating to other winter habitats. In the past we’ve recorded rare sightings of the semipalmated sandpiper, and in October we were treated to a sighting of the small sanderling visiting from its arctic breeding grounds. A favourite and frequent visitor to the lagoon is the spoonbill. For many years the spoonbill flock sizes have been building, and in 2014 it peaked to the largest flock of spoonbills ever seen in Britain, with 49 birds recorded in one flock. and easily identifiable guests are large flocks of waders, particularly avocets, which are distinguishable by their long blue legs and curved bill, perfect for si�ing through the mud for fish. They breed in east Anglia, France and Germany but the number seen on the Brownsea Lagoon is of international importance, where 1,200 or more can be seen in the winter. The black-tailed godwit breed in Iceland but can be seen through the year on Brownsea Island, with up to 2,500 visiting in the winter to feed on worms found in the lagoon. A unique partnership between Dorset Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust and Birds of Poole Harbour has been set up to run boat trips around Poole Harbour during the winter months, so visitors can get a first-hand experience of the thousands of birds feeding and roosting on the Brownsea Island Lagoon, when the rest of the island is closed for winter. Lighthouse sets standard for intern programmes ahead of law change With unpaid work experience likely to be outlawed in the new year Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, is setting the standard for the creative employment of interns. According to the social mobility campaigning body the Sutton Trust eighty-six per cent of arts internships are unpaid – a figure that is only surpassed in the retail sector where almost nine out of ten are unpaid. The practice is seen as a barrier to young people from low and moderateincome backgrounds accessing careers in those industries. Scheduled for a second reading on 25 January the Unpaid Work Experience (Prohibition) Bill would end unpaid internships that last longer than four weeks. But marketing interns at Lighthouse, the UK’s largest regional arts centre, are not only paid the minimum wage they have a clearly defined role within the organisation, receive comprehensive training and are actively helped in their future job search. So far, every intern has gone on to find full-time work in the arts or related industries. “We are passionate about our intern programme,” says Sara St George, Deputy CEO at Lighthouse. “As part of our role as cultural leaders in the South West it is imperative that we nurture the next generation of arts professionals in the region and present new employment opportunities in the arts.” Interns stay for six months and work four days a week giving them time to pursue other interests, voluntary work or further paid employment. They are trained in arts marketing practice and encouraged to contribute their own skills. Two have since secured full-time positions at Lighthouse.
“I didn’t really know jobs like this existed until I applied for the role,” says current intern AnneMarie Dames who started work in October. “I want to work in the creative industries and had previously done a marketing internship in retail but hadn’t thought of arts marketing as a specific skill set and didn’t think there were jobs like this outside London. “I feel a lot more confident about what I’m doing and it’s good to be learning again as there was a sense that learning about the things I love stopped when I finished uni.” Her predecessor Andrew Meredith is a practicing artist who took a break from his painting career to develop his marketing skills in an arts context. “The internship offered more than just a simple glance into marketing within a professional arts centre,” he says. “I felt an accepted and valued member of the marketing team and returned to my own painting practice fully equipped to professionally market my own creative endeavours” Lighthouse launched its marketing intern programme in 2014 backed by the Creative and Cultural Skills Council taking the scheme inhouse in 2016 when that funding ended.

Individuality Swimming was formed by Kristin Maguire in 2002 to deliver swimming lessons to meet swimmers’ individual needs, as individuals we sometimes need that extra helping hand to achieve what we want in life. Your swimming journey can start with our Aqua Natal classes, following the birth you can move to one of our very popular Parent and Baby classes. We actively encourage both parents to take “baby” swimming, and currently have quite a lot of dads in our classes. Parent and Baby classes are a great opportunity for skin to skin contact with baby which helps in the bonding process. We have the license locally for Aqua Sensory and incorporate aqua sensory into all our Parent and Baby classes. “Aqua Sensory is a unique programme, which provides a rich mixture of sensory exploration and early developmental opportunities.” We also have specific Aqua Sensory classes where water offers a unique sensory world requiring closeness and trust that builds strong emotional bonds. Each lesson has specifically themed activities, developed with a key focus on early developmental skills. The programme is a “stimulation of all the senses” that combines movements, music and songs, signing and discovery play.

The next step in your swimming journey happens between 2.5yrs and 3yrs old when you join one of our non-swimmer classes, you will be in the water without Mum or Dad together with up to 4 other adventurous young swimmers. Most of our non-swimmer classes will have a teacher and an assistant to support you in gaining water confidence. Once you have mastered swimming 5m on your front and your back, your journey then progresses to other group lessons where we start to work on your stroke and stamina. Our Group lessons have a maximum of 5 swimmers and are aimed and delivering swimming lessons to meet the groups needs and the individual’s needs. We also offer One to One and Two to One Lessons for children who want or need it. Another step in your journey is the advanced swimming classes where you will work on stroke technique,

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.
Jobs for January:-
• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew le�uces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect �me to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that s�ll leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentra�ng on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use pa�o containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great �me of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the be�er and higher beds will mean less bending when you are plan�ng out seedlings, harves�ng or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awai�ng planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plas�c, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops s�ll growing, such as purple sprou�ng broccoli, will benefit from protec�on against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few le�uces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free condi�ons such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before plan�ng. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for star�ng �ny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disrup�on as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.
