Poole Gig Rowing Club News Poole Gig Rowing Club provide a unique way to get on the water in Poole, and engage in one of Britain’s fastest growing water sports. The Club was founded following a chance discussion in a pub in 2010, where a plan was formed to buy a boat and row it 250 miles from Penzance to Poole. Since then the club has been going from strength to strength both with competitive crews (male and female), and also with a large social rowing scene that caters from absolute beginner and upwards. Good tuition and plenty of quality water time are provided to all our club members. Since lockdown easing, our sport, like many other outdoor activities, has seen a surge in new members joining, which has been so rewarding to see. It’s great to give our club members the ability to see and tour the beauty of Poole Harbour, to see the abundance of wildlife including seals, dolphins and ospreys. Because of the club’s growth, we are now training new coxswains (people who steer the boats, ensure boat safety, and oversee the training of the rowers on the water) thus ensuring that the club can get out on the water even more. Our most experienced rowers step up to this mark. The training, covers crew safety, tide and wind, radio usage, shipping channels, buoy markers and much more. Outside of Poole, the club also competes in races across the South West and occasionally further afield. Racing at sea exposes crews to all the different conditions that our UK coastline has to offer; exciting for sure. The Club has three boats, the original, ’arrypaye, is named after the famous Poole Pirate who was the scourge of Northern France and the Spanish, back in the early 1400’s. Our second boat, Robbie Paye, is named after the brother of ‘arry Paye. Our third boat, Isabelle, is named Isabelle after ‘arry’s wife & mistress, and is our wooden racing gig. 6

The pride of Poole Gig Rowing Club is Isabelle. Isabelle is a traditional Cornish Gig Rowing boat, and this means that she is lovingly built to exact specifications and only from Cornish Elm. All gig racing boats across the country are made to this specification, and the crews form a keen relationship with their boats, and Isabelle is no exception to this. Each summer, all clubs from the ‘Jurassic league’ compete against each other in regattas, each club putting on its own. Poole, as a fairly young club held our first regatta in August 2019, in which 8 other clubs competed. One of the highlights of the event for me was the vigour that the youth crews (under 18’s) fought with, to the very last and refused to give an inch, but then this is gig racing and that is what crews do.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Where could be better to enjoy the very heights of the British summer months than in Dorset? Whether you are staycationing or holidaying in this delicious slice of the country, surely nowhere could be better to enjoy seemingly never ending coastlines and inspiring landscapes? However, it has to be said that the Dorset we enjoy today has been shaped by its impressive heritage. To celebrate Dorset at its ﬁnest, here’s another handful of quirky facts from around the county. Did you know that the UK has only six native reptiles and Dorset’s Puddletown Forest can lay claim to having populations of all of these species? The forest has vital areas of heathland which is so important for sustaining these reptiles. Interestingly the sand lizard which is not only the largest British lizard but is also the rarest, has suﬀered some of the greatest decline in numbers however a recent project saw several hundred young sand lizards released into Puddletown Forest to introduce a population to the heathland in the hope of improving national numbers.

It's no secret that many writers and artists flock to Dorset to be inspired and certainly the county has produced many fine authors. Among their number was John Meade Falkner, the author of beloved smuggling and shipwrecking book Moonfleet, who was raised in Weymouth and Dorchester. The village of Moonfleet itself is based on East Fleet and Corfe Castle is another area which features heavily in the book. A trip to any one of the book’s locations is perfect for a fun day out with the kids, walking in the steps of Falkner’s characters. 8

Athelhampton is surely one of the county’s ﬁnest examples of Tudor architecture with origins dating as far back as at least 1485. Throughout history the country estate has been a stronghold for several powerful Dorset families however by the19th century the house was becoming a somewhat sorrier aﬀair and the Great Hall’s roof was in need of repair. Interestingly Thomas Hardy's father, also Thomas, was asked to help with these repairs with his profession as a stonemason. In a perhaps peculiar change of direction, in the years to come, the house his father had worked to preserve would later host the author. No doubt he was thankful the roof didn’t leak!

Did you know that the impressive Duke of Wellington sculpture in St. Paul’s Cathedral was the work of a Dorset local? Born in Blandford Forum, Alfred Stevens was the son of a joiner and decorator whose business he joined at the age of ten. His artistic talents were spotted at a young age and the local rector provided the funds for young Stevens to go and study in Italy. Upon his return the opportunity to create a memorial statue for one of Britain’s most respected historical ﬁgures was made public and ultimately it was the Dorset local’s design which won the commission. Alfred Stevens would create an impressive memorial which not only honoured Wellington but created a legacy of his work.

Never mind Wimbledon, were you aware that King Henry VIII was a frequent visitor to Walditch where he would enjoy a game of ‘real tennis’? This regal game of ‘real tennis’ was known as the ‘sport of the kings’ largely similar to lawn tennis however the game is known to have greater complexities than its commoner’s counterpart. The King was a great fan of real tennis and he even had such courts built at Hampton Court. No doubt he was always the winner. Long love the King!

Talking about Wildlife...

Reptiles: soaking up the sun in Dorset Like humans, reptiles love basking in the sun at this time of year. In Dorset we are lucky to have lowland heathland habitat to support all six British native reptile species.

Reptiles are truly magnificent creatures, but they need a very specific habitat to thrive in and can be very sensitive to changes in their environment, which is why all reptile species are legally protected. You also need a license to handle and monitor them. As reptiles are ectothermic (cold-blooded), they bask in the sun to warm up, and hide away in the shade to cool down again. During the colder months they hibernate, but in the summer months, reptiles will be enjoying the sunshine and feasting on the delights the heath has to offer, with lizards preying on spiders and insects and snakes favouring small mammals. As with lots of wildlife species in Dorset, their survival and success is largely due to having well-managed habitat to thrive in. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Great Heath team work hard on our heaths to ensure there is sandy soil, low vegetation and not too many trees, to create a dry and warm habitat for reptiles. Sand Lizard

Exhibition match to say thanks for the donation to grass-roots snooker

A YOUNG professional and three of the south’s top teenage amateurs will be displaying their snooker skills at a Bournemouth social club in August. The awesome foursome will play exhibition matches to say a massive ‘thank you’ for a generous donation to the grass-roots game. The Bournemouth and District Constitutional Club has handed over a whopping £1,000 to Cuestars, a snooker organisation headed by John Hunter that runs tournaments for all ages and abilities across central southern England and provides coaching for junior players.

Headlining the afternoon snookerfest will be world number 116 Jamie Wilson, who has just completed his ﬁrst season as a professional. The 17-year-old from Havant has been playing in Cuestars events since the age of six and recently made his ﬁrst competitive 147 break. Wilson will be joined by three England junior internationals: 19-year-old Bradley Cowdroy, Bournemouth’s top junior and the reigning Dorset county champion, 19 year-old Connor Benzey, from Eastleigh, who won the 2019 European Under-17 Snooker Open in Malta, and 15-year-old Oliver Sykes, from Chandler’s Ford, who has already made a 139 break. Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

There is an alternative.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish. A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival Some of you may have heard of the Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival – after all it’s been going for more than 90 years. Sadly last year we had to cancel due to Covid, but we’re planning to be back with a bang in October.

If you’re not sure about entering why not come along to watch? A day ticket only costs £3 (£2 for concessions). You’ll be supporting all the wonderful local talent – they really appreciate having an enthusiastic audience.

If you’re interested in the Performing Arts, the Festival deﬁnitely has something for you. If you’d like to take part there are vocal classes for everything from opera to the latest musical theatre hits, a wide variety of Speech and Drama options, plus instrumental classes to suit all grades and instruments. Classes are judged by a professional adjudicator, but don’t worry, the atmosphere is very friendly and supportive and you can learn a lot from watching your fellow competitors. This year we are hosting The Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition, and a new award for younger adult singers, The Hubert Parry award of up to £250.

This year the Festival is taking place at The Knole in Knole Road, a lovely venue with plenty of parking, and light refreshments are available to purchase, so why not make a day of it and bring your friends (and of course make some new ones!) Scentsational As mid-summer approaches I keep watch for the flowers to open on a honeysuckle which weaves through and over the beech hedge just outside the back door. It’s not as pretty as many, with egg yellow flowers turning to white, but the scent is a lingering mix of coconut and mango, exotic, sweet and intoxicating. So many plants in our gardens are scented, not intended for our enjoyment at all, but for very practical reasons. The scent of flowers is produced by aromatic oils evaporating as they are warmed by the sun with the purpose of attracting pollinating insects. Leaves may be scented as a defence mechanism against sap sucking insects or herbivores, but we interpret and enjoy them in our own way.

The Philadlephus in my garden is too sweet and ﬂoral for me to be reminded of oranges, which its common name of mock orange would have me think, but there is a thyme in a pot by a bench which is at a perfect height for running my hand through to pick up the strongest scent of sweet oranges. The roses have a wide range of aromas, from the sharpness of sherbet lemons through old fashioned face powder to very disappointingly non-existent. The most unusual scent in my garden this summer is from a night scented stock, the seeds of which I grew from a packet free with a magazine. By day it has no smell at all but as the light fades it ﬁlls the evening air around it with warm cinnamon and cloves. Nearby I can smell aniseed from the fennel and the rich and complex aroma of a good curry from Helichrysum, from which it gets its common

name of curry plant. The unexpectedly rich and spicy scented Buddleia we all know to be brilliant for nectar feeding butterﬂies, but it must be full of pollen too, a good deep sniff of it is guaranteed to make me sneeze, and then there is the lavender, well known for the many properties of its scent and loved by almost everyone, even those whose gardens are totally unsuitable for it. From the fruit bowl to the spice rack and childhood memories of granny’s Eau de Cologne, the scents of our garden plants can take us around the world and back again. Simply scentsational.

AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust returns to Care South’s Dorset homes Residents at Care South’s Dorset care homes were delighted to welcome the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust teams back in their homes this week, with everyone keen to put their footballing skills to the test after all their Zoom practice sessions over the last 18 months. The Trust team made their way around the homes, making sure everyone got involved, using specially designed seated football games to bring out the competitive streak in residents. The team then treated the residents to some expert demonstrations, talking everyone through the intense training and exercise regimes that the Cherries players must go through to reach the very highest level. After working up an appetite, everyone sat and swapped footballing stories over a cup of tea. The residents loved reminiscing about their sporting heroes from days gone by and their own exploits on the ﬁeld and in the stands. The coaches really enjoyed hearing about the history of the game they love, and the residents were equally interested to learn how the game has changed since they last put their boots on.

Soul Brother In conversation with Craig Charles. Actor, author, presenter, DJ, comedian and even parttime poet – Craig Charles is a creative tour de force whose career on stage, on screen, in print and across the airwaves now spans four decades, having made his performing debut in 1981. He is the chipper Liverpool-born entertainment heavyweight whose ability to ﬁll a room is about much more than just the soul and funk anthems he booms across the airwaves. “It’s strange, different generations know me for different things,” he begins. “Obviously to a lot of people I am Dave Lister, the last human being alive! That’s where a lot of it began for me, though I like to think the planet has been suitably repopulated in order

for people to enjoy my other creative pursuits!” That’s fair enough – Craig has presented iconic game shows Robot Wars and Takeshi’s Castle; he enjoyed a long stint in Coronation Street as philandering taxi driver Lloyd Mullaney, as well as appearing in Holby City, The Bill, EastEnders, Dream Team and more. He’s even tested himself on the likes of University Challenge, Pointless, The Weakest Link and The Chase. “I’m just one of those people who love to throw myself into a challenge,” he says. “My agent will bring these projects to me and even the ones I don’t really fancy the look of, there’s something inside me that says ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’. “I would admit on some occasions I’ve actually found out the worst case scenario,” he laughs, “and that’s ritual humiliation, usually when I’ve been on some kind of show that requires intellect!” Arguably Craig’s proudest achievement is

The people who present the shows are experts and enthusiasts, and it’s all about music, not egos.” As for the future, Craig is focused on getting back out and playing to crowds now our lives appear to be getting back on track. “We desperately need to get live events going again – it’s in the soul and I can’t wait. I started out at 14 doing performance poetry in a tiny little dark space at The Abbey in Liverpool on a Sunday night. It was small but it was real, and we need that back – from the major festivals to the very angry young men on stage trying to ﬁnd a voice, like I was back then! I can’t wait!”

Forever Fashion How and why you ought to resist the lure of fashion. We are now living in a material world thanks to the rise of fast fashion. The UK alone sees on average 300,000 tonnes of textiles sent to landfill every year, and with more than 60% of fabric fibres being synthetic you can bet those clothes are going to be hanging around for a very long time. These artificial microfibres also end up in our water systems eventually making their way deep into our oceans where they are eaten by fish and other marine life. Yet ‘fast fashion’ is hard to resist. 1 - Only buy what you love Tempting as it may be to buy new clothes every payday, you may ﬁnd more fulﬁlment in the long-term by saving up and investing in pieces that will last and that you will treasure for years to come. Remember, true style is timeless. 2 - Invest in vintage The beauty of good quality fabric is that it lasts. From super-soft cashmere jumpers to impeccably cut denim jeans and piles of retro tees that get

better with every wash, vintage shops are the affordable antidote to throwaway fashion. 3 - Seek ‘circularminded’ brands As there is clearly a market for synthetic fabric in fashion, it makes perfect sense that plastic marked for landﬁll – such as cola bottles, shopping bags and food packaging – is diverted

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Isn’t it great to go for a walk in our luscious green, English countryside! Daichi highly recommends walking to clear away the mental cobwebs and stresses of the week. He loves to bounce his way to the destination, always with a picnic, coffee at the ready and a big stealy white smile. We love him. This time he took us to Pamphill near Wimborne in East Dorset. There are bluebell woods here which can look amazing at the right time of the year. In 2018 the National Trust planted 2500 trees at the Abbott Street Plantation, which you can see on the map. This included oak, hazel, scots pine, sweet chestnut and wild cherry trees. The intention is to extend the ancient woodland for future generations, so they continue to enjoy our wonderful wildlife and views. How cool is that. Some of the trees in the woodland have been standing there for 300 years (and I feel old…) and are struggling with disease and stress, so there was a fence to keep us heavy humans out and allow the trees some space, peace and quiet to recover. Maybe there is a lesson to learn there… certainly

Ancient woodland at Abbott Street Copse taking a walk can help us too, recover from a taxing week. In addition to that some of the dead trees, known as “standing deadwood” have been deliberately left where they have stood for hundreds of years. These old, decayed trees, which still have a wonderful presence about them, are great for wildlife and create a haven for woodpeckers, insects, tree creepers and a large variety of fungi. They make it a heathy habitat for other species to thrive. I love nature and there is definitely something very magical about this woodland. I take my hat off (or Daichi’s bonnet) to the National Trust who are preserving this delightful area. We really enjoyed our meanderings. Once out of the sheltered wood, we walked to more open ground, across fields and climbed over stiles to follow the walk we had found on our phone. Modern technology working with ancient woodlands and a beautiful leisurely stroll. The walk is about an hour long, though we were walking pretty slowly really, so for those who like more of a hike you could probably do this in half an

hour! We like to amble, take our time and breathe in the fresh air. We saw buzzards, deer, horses and walkers with dogs. The view further on the trail is amazing. Rolling hills and farmhouses. One thatched cottage in the distance had had a fire and was burnt to a cinder, all black and eerie looking. I do not know the story there, but I certainly hope everyone was safe. Back at the Pamphill Green car park we decided to visit St Stephen’s Church, which is the Bankes Family Church. The Bankes family owned Kingston Lacy Country House and this Church was built in memory of Walter Ralph Bankes who was a Lord High Admiral of Purbeck. I immediately noticed there were no gravestones. Call me odd, but as a teenager and later at university I used to walk around Churches and Graveyards to read the tombstones. I found it fascinating to see who was alive in the area then, how long they had lived and see family members all together. Pure enchantment. To others I was seen as a little ‘mad’ I think! Well, it is a good job we are all different I say. So, immediately seeing there were no gravestones to read, I looked it up on good old Google and found that land has to be consecrated in order to have a burial ground. Holy water, which has been blessed by a priest is used to make the land sacred and only then can

Daichi waited in the woods the land be used for burials. This land was obviously not consecrated and thus no tombstones to read. Churches do have a certain atmosphere about them, especially chocolate-box looking ones like this one. Idyllic. This Church was built in 1907 after seven years of construction. The previous Church had been left to go to ruins and unlike the dead trees in the woods, a broken-down, dilapidated Church does not aid others in their survival, so a new one had to be built. Well, they did a very good job I have to say. All this countryside walking and fresh air meant that refreshments were in order. The Vine Inn Pub is a very short drive down the road and as it was a lovely evening, we decided to sit in the garden there and have a drink. A great end to a very simple, relaxed afternoon. After all the chasing around of the week it was delightful to sit and listen to birds singing, taste the fresh night air and chill out. Daichi watched us with an equally lazy smile. Wherever you live there is countryside not that far away. If you are able to get out and about, all you need is walking shoes and a jacket just in case. Don’t let your kids climb the walls with boredom this summer; instead get them in the kitchen with these six brilliantly simple and fun ideas. • No-churn vegan ice cream Never again will you throw out overly ripe bananas once you’ve sampled this delectable frozen treat. Instead, they can be peeled and cut into two-inch chunks and stored in the freezer in a freezer bag (bananas must be frozen for at least six hours before making) and then blitzed in a blender to make a vegan dessert that is not unlike soft serve ice cream.

• Scones Believe it or not, scones are the benchmark of low-maintenance baking because they require only basic ingredients, come together easily and can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways.

• Mug cakes The internet is overflowing with mug cake recipes, but this is a simple one that requires no flour and even less baking prowess.

Best devoured, naturally, with long spoons that reach right to the bottom of the glass, scooping up every, last, drop. Yum.

Whisk one egg with a dash of vanilla essence and combine in your mug of choice with one tablespoon of cooled, melted butter. Add three tablespoons each of sugar and cocoa powder (unsweetened) and a pinch of salt. Microwave for one to one-and-a-half minutes and then scoff with spoon. • Pizzas Allowing for lots of creativity with little room for disaster, small hands will love spreading tomato puree over their pizza base and then adding the toppings of their choice. Grated cheddar, mozzarella, ham, pineapple, sliced peppers, chorizo, olives and mushrooms at the ready!

A straightforward base of flour, butter and milk that requires very little mixing, can be dotted with raisins, jewelled with cherries, made savoury by adding cheese or just left as they are. • Ice cream sundaes There’s no celebration necessary to bring out the fancy, tall glasses ready to be filled with fresh fruit, different flavours of ice cream, whipped cream and every kind of sauce and topping you can find in your cupboards.

• Stovetop macaroni cheese When it comes to melty, gooey, oozy macaroni cheese, who has the patience to put it into the oven to bake? Certainly not kids. Simply add a few tablespoons of flour to melted butter in a large pan to create a basic roux. Then add both milk and water slowly, mixing as you go. Stir in dried pasta (it doesn’t have to be macaroni), salt, garlic powder and any other seasonings of choice – e.g. cayenne pepper, paprika, mustard, nutmeg etc. – and heat to a simmer. Cook for 10 or so minutes more until pasta is cooked through, then add lots of grated cheese.

Have your say on protecting Christchurch Bay and Harbour from future flood and erosion risk BCP Council and New Forest District Council are asking local people to get involved in the development of a new strategy. The strategy will guide how the risk of flooding and erosion along the frontage of Christchurch Bay, from Hengistbury Head Long Groyne to Hurst Spit, encompassing Christchurch Harbour, will be sustainably managed for the next 100 years. The strategy is being produced jointly by both councils, working together with the Environment Agency. It will be designed to protect coastal communities from tidal flooding and erosion and will also consider the effects of climate change, including sea level rise and the increased levels of storminess. The coastal frontage has been divided into five distinct areas to help people 48

The Army Cadet Force is a national uniformed youth organisation for young people based upon military lines, it is sponsored by the MOD who provide uniforms, equipment and training facilities. It is important to note however there is no compulsion to commit to serving the armed forces, although some do choose this as a career path. The Cadets follow a progressive, structured syllabus designed to build confidence, resilience, leadership, and teamwork as well as practical skills such as first aid. The topics covered include; Drill and turnout, Shooting, Skill at Arms, First Aid, Navigation, Fieldcraft, Expedition Skills, Physical Training, Military Knowledge and Cadet in the Community.

Welcome to the August Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include 2021’s best meteor shower, the gas giants on display, and how to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. International Space Station The ISS is only visible for the last few days of August, between 3 – 6am. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your home town. Events The annual Perseid meteor shower, famous for its bright ﬁreballs and persistent trains, reaches its peak this year on the night of 12 - 13th August. Fortunately, the optimum time to spot most meteors is after midnight, and as the Moon sets at 10.30pm we will be left with a dark sky to observe the best meteor shower of the year. Grab a warm drink, coat and a blanket and see what you can spot. Although the radiant for the shower is towards the northeast, the meteors can appear to come from any direction in the sky. Mercury & Mars The Solar System’s two smallest planets lie adjacent to each other low on the western horizon after sunset and are incredibly diﬃcult to locate, being lost in the Sun’s glare.

Object of the Month August is a great month to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, found within the constellation of Sagittarius. Look for the ‘Teapot’ asterism low to the south around 9pm (see figure). Its spout points towards the galactic centre, which hosts a super massive black hole called Sgr A* that has a mass equivalent of 4 million suns. This area is wonderfully rich in star clusters and a set of binoculars swept over the area will reveal a magnificent suite of astronomical objects. This part of the sky never gets very high, and is best viewed between July and September, so get out there if you can and enjoy it whilst it lasts! You’ll need a good view south – the Bournemouth clifftop is a good place to look, but watch out for low sea mists and heat haze disrupting your view. View S throughout Aug at 9:30PM

Venus Conversely, Venus is the incredibly bright object in the west, visible until about 9.30pm. Jupiter and Saturn Jupiter and Saturn ﬁnally return in all their splendour to our evening skies. Located low in the southeast around 9pm, they move higher towards the south around midnight. Jupiter, on the left, is the brighter of the two (see ﬁgure). If you are able to look at Jupiter through a pair of binoculars you may see four pinpricks of light close to the planet. These are its four largest moons; Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Retro Phone Reality With Apple’s iPhone 13 on its way in September, we ask if it would be possible to survive in the modern era with a 1st generation mobile phone. The iPhone1 was launched back in 2007, and this trendy upstart’s emergence was met with a level of jovial, sneering interest. In truth, the ﬁrst product Apple introduced was a long way short of spectacular – it wasn’t until iPhone models 2, 3 and 4 where a revolution truly emerged. And yet, in terms of the initial functional purpose of a phone – in other words, to make and receive calls – it still performs. Plus, a lot of the inbuilt software features will still work – the music player, visual voicemail, and the inbuilt apps are functional… to a point. And by that we mean while Google Maps performs, the YouTube app no longer works, such has been the advancements in technology and the spectacular fallout between Apple and Google.

Aside from that, the Apple basics of contacts, calendar, photos, stocks, weather, clock, calculator and notes are all present and unaffected. That’s good, because if you still had an iPhone1 you’d be on these apps more than any other, for the simple reason that it wasn’t until iPhone2 did Apple install any ability to download new apps (via the App Store). Yes, that’s right, unless you ‘jailbreak’ the phone, there is zero prospect of adding What’s App, Instagram, The Trainline, Angry Birds or any other software application. And yes, you may suggest the connectivity you crave can be achieved via Safari, except for the fact the iPhone1 lacked a 3G band. That means accessing the web is impossible unless you are connected to a Wi-Fi network; so checking

football scores at the beach or updating yourself on breaking news when popping into town – forget it. There’s also the limitation of a four-hour battery life, and while the camera will still produce for you more than acceptable images, your phone capacity of just 8G (compare this to the 256GB models out there today) offers little space to store them. Coupled with 128MB of RAM (which is around 30 times smaller than today’s phones) processing is painfully slow, so loading a web page, for instance, would take up to a minute. All this makes it sound as if the iPhone1 is now longer ﬁt for purpose, yet we’ve all experienced that feeling of freedom when we’ve misplaced or broken our phones. We live our lives glued to our devices all the time, so while using an iPhone1 in 2021 might not give you a connectivity you’re used to, it certainly would unite you again with the immediate world around you, and perhaps that’s no bad thing.

Summer Fruits Pie Introduction

Make the most of summers berries with this delectable pie… perfect with a dollop of fresh cream!

Ingredients

(serves four)

For the pastry: 225g cold unsalted butter chopped into small pieces 350g plain flour 50g icing sugar Pinch of salt 1 large egg yolk For the filling: 800g of berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries or blueberries 100g sugar 2tbsp of cornflour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 egg white (for glazing) 1tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

1. Put the ﬂour, butter, icing sugar and salt in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Combine the yolk with 1tbsp cold water, then add to the processor and pulse until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two, wrap in clingﬁlm and chill in the fridge for at least one hour or, better still, overnight. 2. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Roll out one half of the pastry, then butter an 8” pie dish and press in the pastry topped with a sheet of baking paper and baking beans. Bake blind for 30 mins. Remove the paper and beans. the mixture into your baked pie base. 3. Roll out the second batch of pastry and top the pie with it, trimming to ﬁt, and using a fork to seal the edge. Use a sharp knife to create a few slits for steam to escape before brushing with the whisked egg white before topping with sugar. Bake for 30-35 minutes until crust is golden. Leave to cool as ﬁlling will be extremely hot!

• If you’re time-starved, feel free to use pre-made shortcrust pastry which is generally as good as homemade, and certainly easier! • If you don’t have baking beans use cooking weights, dried lentils or rice. • If you don’t have access to a food processor simply rub the butter and ﬂour together until it is the texture of breadcrumbs.
