What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had 5 fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude!

Care South’s Alexandra House officially opened by Lord and Lady Fellowes Lord and Lady Fellowes of West Stafford officially opened Care South’s latest newlyrebuilt care home, Alexandra House, on Tuesday 3rd July. Care South representatives, staff and residents gathered with members of the local community alongside Lord and Lady Fellowes to celebrate the official unveiling of Alexandra House, which is located close to Alexandra Park in the heart of the local community in Parkstone, near Poole. The home provides a warm and welcoming environment for individuals with residential and dementia care needs. Lord Julien Fellowes DL, best known for his world acclaimed Downton Abbey TV series, was welcomed by Care South to formally open the home, unveiling a plaque in the homes reception area. Lord Fellows said: “I am delighted to be invited to this wonderful place and meet some of those already enjoying the security and comfort of this charming home. Compton Acres’ Charity Advocate Shaves Her Hair for Alzheimer’s Research UK Alzheimer’s charity champion, Dani Bevis has said goodbye to her hair to help support those struggling with dementia and to honour her late great-grandmother’s memory. A member of the Café & Tearoom’s team at Compton Acres, Dani undertook her charity head shave surrounded by her co-workers, family and friends. She has already exceeded her initial target of £250, raising a total of £417 so far for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Currently, 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. Aiding the national charity through her fundraising, Dani is contributing to Alzheimer’s Research UK’s mission to fund pioneering preventions and treatments for dementia. She has set up a Just Giving page which is still open for those who want to help Dani raise further funds. Danielle Bevis said: “Dementia can be devasting for families. For our family, it was our Great Nan. We watched a clever, strong, witty and funny woman deteriorate into someone we didn’t know anymore. To help others facing similar situations, I decided to shave my hair, which anyone at Compton Acres will tell you is my greatest vanity, for Alzheimer’s Research UK. I would like to thank the team at Compton Acres and everyone who came out on the day to support me.’’

Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support
At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and final tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barfleur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. You can find out more about all 41 sites across England by visiting www. wildlifetrusts.org/mcz, and for more information about the proposal’s Dorset sites, please visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust. org.uk/mczs where you can also become a friend of the MCZ’s and get regular updates and information on the outcome of the public consultation for the third tranche. The centre has a new artificial rockpool, new information panels, and interactive virtual seabed, a new shop, and lots of events throughout the summer. Lighthouse staff raise money in 40th anniversary fundraising challenge Staff at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts have been getting behind Challenge40 – a fundraising campaign which celebrates the iconic arts centre’s 40th birthday. Lighthouse bosses threw down the gauntlet to employees at the beginning of the year, challenging each of them to raise £40 to provide opportunities for young people throughout Dorset to experience the arts through dynamic creative programmes. Staff wasted no time in taking up the challenge, and the fundraising pledges came in thick and fast. On 1st July, in sweltering hot conditions, Lighthouse Stage Door Attendant Stephen Collins undertook a gruelling 40 mile run between Dorset’s two working lighthouses at Portland Bill and Anvil Point. Accompanied for much of the run by Duty Manager Tom Holmes, Stephen managed to complete a staggering 32 miles before the heat made the run impossible to continue. PA & Administrator Michele Shield completed the Edinburgh half marathon on 27 May, raising money for Challenge40 and Coeliac UK. Current Lighthouse Board Chairman Mike Jeffries held an exhibition and auction of his watercolour paintings, splitting the proceeds between the Lighthouse Challenge40 campaign and Dorset’s disability charity Diverse Abilities, whilst former Chairman David Pratley is set to perform a Christmas piano recital in the Sherling Studio at Lighthouse on 6 December. In February, Lighthouse trustee Professor Bob Reeve carried out backstage tours of Lighthouse for members of a local U3A group.
Other members of staff have run TV quizzes and ‘Who’s the Baby’ competitions for their colleagues, given up chocolate for lent or made and sold homemade natural cosmetics products and other homegrown items including freshly laid eggs and tomato plants. A charity Quiz Night will take place in the autumn for all Lighthouse employees. Lighthouse Chief Executive Elspeth McBain commented: “We have an incredible, committed team at Lighthouse and their support for our fundraising campaign is inspiring. They set themselves the challenge of raising £40,000 by the end of the year and they have more than risen to it! The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

29 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. Dead-heading and Seed collecting
You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.

Big Ride cyclists brave the heat for Julia’s House A hundred and twenty riders braved sweltering heat to take part in The Big Ride, a new cycling event organised by Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospice.

Previously run as the Hospice-toHospice ride, with a route between the Dorset hospice in Corfe Mullen and the Wiltshire hospice in Devizes, this year it changed venue and name in favour of a new circular route starting from Larmer Tree Gardens. Cyclists chose between a 50 and 100 mile ride through beautiful open countryside, villages – and up a couple of killer hills! There were several welcome refreshment stops along the way and at the end of their journey the cyclists were presented with medals and treated to a celebratory hog roast and glass of Prosecco. Last year’s ride raised £63,000 and early signs are that this is likely to be matched. Among those joining the ride was Julia’s House Director of Care Ali Acaster and
Parent Ambassador Charles Andrews along with 10 of his colleagues from engineering firm Meggitt. Charles, whose 14-year-old daughter Katherine receives care from Julia’s House, has had a very active week – he is currently taking part in the charity’s Trek the Alps challenge event. Big thank you to all the Julia’s House volunteers for manning checkpoints, refreshments and road crossings and to sponsors Addo Food Group, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Muc Off, Emily Crisps and Pedals Cycle Centre.

Local girl selected for Jurassic Unit at World Scout Jamboree Rebecca Crane is set to go on a trip of a lifetime after success with the Scouts. The 15-year-old Poole Panda Explorer Scout has been picked to travel to the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, United States in July 2019. The teenager, who joined Rainbows just after her fifth birthday, moved to Brownies and then Guides, became involved with the scout movement after helping out at Beavers. “My Mum and brother are involved with scouting” she explained “so it was a natural progression for me” adding “My Grandad was a scout leader, so you could say it’s in the blood”. Rebecca, who is currently working towards her silver Duke of Edinburgh award with the Scouts, also helps at her local cub pack in Canford Heath, and is partway through her young leader training, said “To get to this point has been a great achievement. My family is really proud.” Rebecca has enjoyed a number of special moments through Scouting – including being one of a small group of Scouts who met Michael Portillo on Brownsea Island last summer to do a feature for his series Great British Railway Journeys. “I’m never going to live down admitting to liking washing up!” she jokes. Rebecca is due to sit nine GCSE’s next year, and says her trip to the US will be a welcome break after all that hard work. The St Edwards pupil lists German and the sciences amongst her favourite subjects, but don’t ask her to narrow it down, “it’s far too hard” she
says “biology, chemistry and physics are all amazing”. Following her USA trip she has another decision to make as she explains “choosing my A Levels is going to be a hard decision, but I know I’ll be staying with St Edwards to do them”. Next year Rebecca will travel to the 11-day camp with 32 others from the Dorset region as part of the Jurassic Unit. “It’s my first time at a big international camp” Rebecca admitted “even getting there will be an adventure, as it’s my first ever flight; but I’m really looking forward to it” “Not only will there be a lot of high adrenaline activities like rock climbing, archery and zip lining but there’s also a cultural side to it. “There is a day where everyone gets to show off their culture and you get go around and see the different groups”. Ahead of jetting off, Rebecca is in full fundraising mode not only to help with the costs of the trip, but also to raise money for the solidarity fund which enables scouts from less wealthy countries to attend the Jamboree too.

MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
