Dear Poole! What great weather we have had. Let’s hope this continues and the children, as well as ourselves, all have a great summer! In this month’s issue of The Poole Directory we have our very own ‘Nellie’ feature. This is The Dorset Publications campervan we invested in recently. I love our trips out and this month we went to Winspit which some of you may know. We had a wonderful warm day walking around the amazing disused quarry, exploring the caves, having a picnic and then bathing in the rock pools. Please take a look at our photos on pages 18 and 19. There are also lots of different articles for you so do enjoy a good cup of tea or coffee and have a read. Providing care where it’s needed “My physiotherapist, Carly Fricker, visits me at home for my rehabilitation following a stroke. Recovering and learning to get about again in my own surroundings, rather than in a hospital, is much better for me.” Michael Goulding “The whole home birth experience was just amazing. For us to be the sole focus of two highly experienced midwives - one looking after me and the other looking after the baby - was just so reassuring.” Serena and James Witt Michael Goulding and Serena and James Witt have both had very different experiences of receiving the care they needed at home, rather than in hospital. Michael Goulding recently suffered a stroke and was admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for eight days before being discharged. He was allocated a physiotherapist from the hospital’s 10-strong Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team. Since his stroke, Michael has been experiencing problems with his walking as well as sciatica pains in his back and legs. Following his discharge from hospital, as part of his rehabilitation, he has been receiving a mix of home-based musculosketal and neurological physiotherapy for at least 45 minutes every day. This programme of physiotherapy will take place for at least two weeks. He says: “I like receiving physio at home as it’s comfortable and convenient which I’m sure will help to aid a quick recovery. Having the therapist come to me in my own home is the biggest benefit, allowing me to rest as much as possible.” Serena and James Witt brought daughter Grace into the world at home, supported by Poole Hospital’s Eden home birth team. The five-strong team is dedicated to supporting home births, with their schedules geared around the women booked for home births and not hardand-fast rotas.

“Our midwife, Louise, was so confident and made us confident in our choice too,” said Serena. “The birth was everything we wanted it to be, with all our creature comforts and in our own surroundings.” Research shows that giving birth in a relaxed and calming environment is better for mum and baby, with benefits including a reduced need for pain relief. Care closer to home has been a focus for the NHS nationally for some time. When appropriate it can provide more flexible and accessible care for patients, resulting in a more personal experience. It also encourages greater independence with patients often thriving at home in more familiar surroundings. For some patients who are acutely unwell hospital is the right place to be. For some other patients who do not need acute hospital care, they will benefit more from care that is delivered much closer to home. No one wants to come in to hospital if they don’t need to so home care is much more appropriate. As a result, patients are more satisfied with the care they have received, have increased knowledge of their condition and therefore can often self-manage it better. Other examples where we are providing care where it’s needed include respiratory early discharge schemes, maternity and children’s services. Christchurch Hospital has seen an increase in the number of outpatient clinics, blood test and x-ray services provided, so that patients don’t have to travel to Bournemouth for their appointments. Ophthalmology (eyes) outpatient clinics have also recently started running at Blandford Hospital, following a request from a GP. The trusts recently launched their Informatics Strategy which sets out ambitious plans on how IT and technology will support delivering care where it’s needed. This includes phone clinics, telemedicine and phone apps. The proposed merger between Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals will mean we can provide even more care where it’s needed, ultimately providing more personal care. Outpatient and day-case services will remain on all three sites. Merger allows us to combine staff rotas and provide more flexible working. Improving patient outcomes is a key health priority for the new foundation trust, if approved. The merger will also ensure we can sustain the services we provide and keep them local.

It’s more than just an Air Show... The Bournemouth Air Festival is more than just an air show, and this year’s Night Air programme extends the true festival feel of the event long into the evening. The electric atmosphere of Night Air, sponsored by Corona and supported by the official Night Air radio partner Wave 105, sees entertainment and events taking place throughout the town, from Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers, the Lower Gardens and town centre. This year will see the return of dynamic dusk air displays and for the first time ever they will be on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The remarkable SWIP Team Twister Duo return to light up the skies with their swishing and swooping displays, O’Brien’s Flying Circus are back with a crazy routine, and, in a Night Air first, the Red Devils are performing three amazing night jumps, complete with glow sticks and dazzling pyrotechnics. There will also be spectacular fireworks on the Saturday night to finish things off with a bang. The Corona Night Air stage, in association with Wave 105, will host a selection of fantastic popular performers on both Friday 30th August and Saturday 31st from 6:35pm. The East Overcliff will come to life in the evenings when the Band of HM Royal Marines Collingwood brings regal rhythms and visual splendour to entertain the crowds. The Royal Marines Combat Display Team will also be located on the East Overcliff demonstrating their impressive fighting skills with specialists participating in unarmed combat. The Lower Gardens will be filled with family entertainment - from traditional Punch and Judy performances to stiltwalkers and face painting. Get your creative juices flowing with plane & craft workshops for children of all ages and abilities or enjoy some Jazz and Swing music performed by some fantastic artist in the Pinewalk Bandstand. Talking about Wildlife... Meet a tree in Dorset It may be easy to take trees in our everyday environment for granted, but it is impossible to imagine life on Earth without them. Trees are of immeasurable value both to us and wildlife, from being home to hundreds of different species, to providing us with practically all basics of life, as well as spiritual refuge and inspiration. Various wildlife; from the tiniest insects and fungi to birds and mammals, live in and on trees, and also use them for shelter and food. Trees are essential as wildlife corridors, and species such as dormice live the majority of their active lives in the safety of the tree canopy, travelling from one tree to another. Throughout their history, humans have benefited from trees that have provided them with lumber, furniture, warmth, food, shade, paper, and, of course, oxygen! The process of photosynthesis, carried out by trees and other plants, is one of the very foundations of life. There are around 60 native species of trees in Britain, which come in numerous varieties of sizes, shapes and colours. Trees fall into two main groups: evergreen or deciduous. Evergreens, for example conifers, maintain their leaves throughout the seasons, whereas deciduous trees such as oak generally lose their leaves once a year. Trees are an integral part of our landscape in Dorset, which is also a home to some impressive veteran trees, treasured for their cultural, ecological and historical significance. Veteran trees are
in the ancient stage of their life and can be identified by a number of features, including bark loss, decay holes and a high level of independent wildlife species living in it. It is important that Veteran trees are protected, as many species of wildlife that live in them could not survive in any other tree. Dorset has a number of veteran trees, including a yew tree in Lytchett Matravers which is estimated to be 1,500 years old. Most famously perhaps, Dorset has the avenue of Beech trees planted by French prisoners of war which run from Blandford Forum to Wimborne. Dorset Wildlife Trust also have some stunning ancient trees at the Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve, and on 22nd August we are inviting adults and children to come and ‘meet a tree’ to find out more about their history and what makes them so special. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van This month Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan took us to Winspit which is a disused quarry to the South of Worth Matravers. I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive at first, taking young children... It is actually an awe inspiring place! The views of the Purbeck coastline are magnificent. On a sunny day, as we had, with the cliffs, the sea and the sky, this would be great place to sit and write a book! The quarry is situated on the junction of the footpath from Worth Matravers with the South West Coast Path. We parked in the car park at Worth Matravers and walked down to the cliffs, through the village. It is about a 15-20 minute walk with glorious views. Winspit, I discovered, was worked as a quarry right up to the Second World War and was then taken over by the military. With the ready made ‘bunkers’ where the rocks had been
carved out of the cliffs, this must have been a great place for the soldiers to shelter as well as fire the guns at the enemy! There are certain areas now which are closed to the public, for our own safety, but there are still many caves and tunnels which you can explore if you are so inclined, as you can see opposite. It is certainly not for those who feel

claustrophobic! It is definitely very exciting for those who like the ‘feel’ of the past, and enjoy a place with a certain amount of ‘atmosphere’. The children loved it, finding sloworms too! We went with friends and at one point the children disappeared into the rock face and came out at the top of the cliff! After a magnificent picnic overlooking the rugged and beautiful Jurassic coastline, the children had a bathe in a rock pool near the sea. Such fun! Martin opted to dive straight into the sea as you can see here… We had a fantastic day and I do recommend it, but do be aware of the warning signs of potentially falling rocks, and oh yes… I heard there may
be aliens around! Winspit quarry was not only been featured in episodes of Blake’s 7, but was also filmed as “Skaro”, the home planet of the Daleks for Dr Who! A truly amazing place right here in Dorset. When we returned to the car, we even got treated to a chap landing his paraglider almost over our heads! Where will Nellie go next? Show Time!
During the heat of last month I was part of a small team filming two very different end of year school shows, both hugely popular. One at the Regent Centre, Christchurch and the other at the Bournemouth Pavilion. Both were excellent and reflected the hard work and dedication of the young people and staff at rehearsal, on stage and behind the scenes. The first, ‘Save Our Planet’ was for family and friends at Christchurch Infant School. This was closely followed by the Big Little Theatre School production of Broadway Showtunes. Between them they spanned all ages from 6 and a bit to 19 plus, giving young people a chance to show what they can do, or as Big Little puts it ‘permission to shine’. This was evident not only on stage but whilst speaking with the cast for the Broadway Showtunes DVD. I was impressed by the confidence and ease shown by youngsters when I pointed a microphone towards them. I was fortunate to also be able to speak with the co-founder of Big Little, Michelle Guy, co-producer of Showtunes, the thirteenth in the series. Locally based Michelle met Colin Billing, the company’s creative producer and musical supervisor whilst directing for the original Big Little Theatre Company, an adult company. In a pub one night they came up with an idea of a youth theatre and in 1996 co-founded Big Little Theatre School, a non-profit organisation to promote personal excellence through performance for students aged 3 - 19 years. Children progress through four youth theatre companies dependant on age and future intentions. They meet on Saturdays in Bournemouth. For those who want to commit to theatre as a career, there is the Professional Development Programme. This prepares them to meet the very high standards required for auditions for sought after places at top Theatre Schools. The key to the success of Big Little is in employing experienced professionals
in all aspects of training and putting on productions. Just picking two from several qualified members of the team, Colin Billing has several West End and national credits for his work. The lighting designer, Georg Spindler is flown in from Switzerland for the week. Past students are well represented in London’s theatre land and national tours. Jack Donnelly is playing the lead in the new BBC drama series ‘Atlantis’ and Victoria Yeates is currently filming for a new series of ‘Call the Midwife’. It is good to see that local theatre continues to flourish, with a new generation waiting in the wings. POTATO & TOMATO HERB GALETTE
This simple recipe is a real crowd pleaser and makes a great lunch in its own right or a delicious side dish. Use fresh herbs if possible but you can substitute with dried if necessary. The galette may be made in a pie dish or individual steel food rings. Ideally floury potatoes should be used for this recipe as they have more starch which holds the galette together better. If you don’t have food rings this can be made in a pie dish in exactly the same way but will take longer to cook.
Ingredients for 4 servings 2 large tomatoes 3 or 4 medium sized floury potatoes* Handful of fresh thyme and chives 60g butter Salt & pepper * King Edwards are a good choice - Maris Piper work too although they’re not as floury. Diane Johnson
Equipment: Food processor with slicing disc or mandolin. Sharp knife. Food rings and a baking tray Oven: Gas Mark 7, 220°c Method: Melt the butter in a pan. Using some of the butter grease the rings and the baking tray where the rings will sit. Place rings onto greased area. Wash and chop the herbs, dry on kitchen roll to stop them sticking together. Reserve a small amount for garnish. Thinly slice tomatoes with a sharp knife and leave on a cooling tray to allow excess liquid to drip. Thinly slice the potatoes using the food processor and use immediately. Layer 2 or 3 slices of potato in the rings. Using a pastry brush or the back of a teaspoon, paint the layered potato with the melted butter. Season lightly, sprinkle some herbs and top with tomato. Repeat until you have filled the rings, finishing with a potato layer which should be buttered to brown nicely. Pop in the oven for 30-40 minutes and remove when the crust is golden brown and the potato feels tender with a knife. Scatter with herbs to garnish and serve piping hot.

Moors Valley pays tribute to over 150 volunteers A dedicated group of volunteers recently enjoyed a summer social gathering at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest to say ‘thank you’ for all their hard work. More than 150 volunteers have worked alongside the Rangers at Moors Valley over the last four years. This dedicated team has been responsible for leading a programme of health walks and cycle rides, created especially to give local people the opportunity to take part in regular outdoor exercise in an enjoyable environment. Healthy Lifestyle Ranger, Karl Prince, said: “This incredible band of volunteers has been
invaluable in helping to make our Activate 1000 programme such a success. “Since the programme began nearly 5,000 local people have taken that first crucial step towards a healthy lifestyle.
