Christchurch students battle it out for top cookery prizes Students at the three secondary schools in Christchurch have cooked to the top of their ability to win prizes in competitions organised by Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust and sponsored by Christchurch Rotary. The students, all in Year 10 at The Grange School, Highcliffe School and Twynham School, each had to produce a main course and dessert which were then judged by TV Chef Lesley Waters, President of Christchurch Food & Wine Festival Mary Reader and Christchurch Rotary President Colette Neaum. Also on the judging panel were the local chefs who had launched the competition in each of the schools – Ian Hewitt at The Grange, Kevin Brown from The Lord Bute at Highcliffe and Colin Nash from The Three Tuns at Twynham. The winning students at each school were: The Grange School – Ryan Jennings with pork chow mein and lemon shortbread with cream. Highcliffe School – Sophia Greenacre with basa fillet, spicy kale and rice and roasted poached citrus pears. Twynham School – Jake St. John with pan fried venison with blackberries,saute potatoes and mixed veg and chocolate mousse with shortbread. Jake was also chosen as the overall winner from all three schools. Mary Reader, who is also a trustee of the Food Festival Education Trust, said: “As always with these competitions,
the students really worked hard to come up with some excellent recipes. It was a very difficult job to decide on the winners as all of them had produced some delicious dishes. “This competition has been a stepping stone in the past for many students to go on and have very successful careers in the catering industry so I hope some of this year’s students will think of it as an option when they leave school. “I’m very grateful to Lesley Waters for giving up time from her busy schedule at her cookery school, to Christchurch Rotary for sponsoring the competition again and to the local chefs who helped to inspire the students.”

Three Meritorious Awards presented at Christchurch Council by Mayor Meritorious Awards have been presented at Christchurch Council to two individuals and one group. One individual award went to Peter Allam, currently the Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy. He is the only Christchurchborn person to achieve an Olympic medal, winning one in 1984 sailing a dinghy which he and Jo Richards built in a boatyard in Jumpers Avenue. The second individual award was presented to Pete Dadds a local fisherman for 25 years and a volunteer with the Mudeford RNLI for 23 years. In November 2014, in his fishing boat, he went to the aid of a lone sailor who had been thrown off his yacht. Pete rammed his fishing boat into the yacht
to prevent the sailor being run over by his own boat. He then held the sailor afloat until the Mudeford lifeboat arrived. Over the years he has guided many vessels safely into the harbour. The group award went to the members and helpers of Walkford Youth Club. The Club was set up in October 2010 at the instigation of some parents, this council, and the local police to help give the youngsters of the area something to do in their spare time as there are no play facilities in the area for children of any age. With more than 400 children on the register, they now run two sessions a week. They have successfully fundraised to provide extra facilities for the young members.

After more than 25 years in the business I have seen many changes to the rental industry, from the early days when a slap of whitewash on the walls and a tenancy agreement written on a single sheet of paper to today! Nowadays it seems that there is a trap at every turn, changes to tenancy agreements, alterations to deposit requirements, minor but significant amendments to the wording of notices required to Jeremy Clarke be served, changes to gas & electric regulations. Not least of all the changes is the ease of obtaining information via the internet, with this of course comes the question – is the information that can be sourced correct? I have to admit that the internet is a bit like The Oracle – ask it a question and you’ll receive an answer which can be interpreted in many ways!
So what’s the answer? Here at Belvoir Christchurch we make it our job to ensure that landlords are protected from all these changes, we ensure that we are abreast of the latest legislation and that our paperwork is always up to date. I was reading something on a website the other day – a local estate agent that also “did” lettings – horrified to see just how out of touch that they were with their advice. Talking about Wildlife...
What can nature do for you? Spring has sprung in Dorset. Daffodils and primroses are adding colour to our landscape, butterflies are flitting around, and blossom is starting to bud on trees – a most welcome sight after a long winter. But what does being outside this time of year mean to you, and how does it make you feel? That’s a question we’re asking as part of the new Dorset Wildlife Trust campaign, ‘My Wild Life’, which asks: what’s your wild life? You may think you don’t live a wild life, but every time you step out of your front door, particularly this time of year, wildlife and outside space can shape your day ahead and change your mood, for the better. ‘Ecotherapy’ (being active outdoors) has been proven to improve health and wellbeing, and is a recognised method for helping those with mental and physical health issues. Flora, from Bridport in Dorset is a wild swimmer and loves spending time outside with her children. She also uses nature to help with projects for her stained glass art business. Flora said, “I get a lot of inspiration from being outdoors. As well as contemporary work, I do a lot of traditional work where stained glass panels often feature birds and foliage. Whilst I’m out with my family in Dorset, there’s plenty to photograph to help me with my work.” Beth, from West Bay said, “I absolutely love our coastline and we enjoy going out with the children. We build dens, we play in the sand and fly kites. It’s important to us to spend time outside with them, getting fresh air and exploring local places. Spending time outside makes me feel inspired, relaxed and invigorated.”

NEW MILTON DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY Our final lecture for this season is an appropriate choice for the centenary of the first world war, and the bi-centenary of the battle of Waterloo. The title of Sarah Stopford’s talk is War and Peace, Patriotism and Protest. War has always inspired grand, patriotic ‘history’ painting and strong protest art as well as some of the most poignant evocations of peace. These artists’ impressions record courage and crisis as well as the pain and Sarah Stopford uncertainty of those caught in the crossfire.

Spring nature walks in Christchurch With spring upon us, now is a great time to get out and about and see what nature has to offer. Christchurch Countryside Service is running events this spring. I have been told that before I can issue an application at court to obtain a Child Arrangement Order I must enter into mediation. Is this correct?
If you attempt to make a family application without attending a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting and you do not qualify for an exemption your application will be returned by the court.
From 22 April 2014 under the Children's and Families Bill 2014 it became mandatory that before an individual can make a family application to the court they must attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAMS) unless they are exempt. Exemptions include domestic violence, child protection concerns, urgency, attendance at a previous mediation Information or assessment meeting, existing proceedings, disability, imprisonment or you live abroad and only in specified circumstances in each instance.
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting is usually conducted as a one to one meeting with a qualified mediator, your ex-wife will be invited to attend a separate meeting. The mediator will advise you upon the process of mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, they will also assess the suitability of your issue.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie loves Poole! We have so much to do on our doorstep here in Dorset. There are plenty of exciting activities for all ages, as well as miles of glorious beaches, just around the corner, in our beautiful town of Bournemouth as well of course our own Mudeford Spit! Poole Quay is a vibrant place. There is much history, fantastic old buildings and many good restaurants and cafes for a coffee break, or even a full seafood meal. So yes, Nellie loves to travel to Poole. She knows that many of you will be very familiar with the sights and sounds of our wonderful seaside location but she wanted to tell you of her recent exciting trip out and all that she saw. The Sunseeker boats! Oh boy do they look magnificent. We are lucky enough to have Sunseeker based right here in Poole. It is in fact the flagship dealership for new and pre-owned Sunseeker boats and luxury motor yachts. These yachts make Nellie’s mouth water. They give the whole place a sense of wealth, extravagance… and how the other half live! Oh well, maybe not this lifetime but they are great to see anyway.

Nellie loves Sunseekers! The Pleasure boats! Now these are more like it. Nellie can afford this. Though she is rather too large to actually step on board. (She really does need to go on a diet… again!). Brownsea Island is where these boats take you, as well as some trips to Wareham, Swanage and Old Harry Rocks, so for anyone wanting to have a pleasurable trip around the harbour, take in our glorious scenery, have a coffee on board and generally ‘while away the day’, this is for you! It is also for children as they usually love the sea and it is pretty exciting to watch the land move further and further away. Brownsea Island, which is magnificently set in Poole Harbour with spectacular views over the Purbecks is owned by the National Trust. Lord Baden Powell’s statue salutes you as you set off for ‘his scout’s island’. Our famous, rare, red squirrels can be spotted here so those with a good camera could get some amazing photos. There is also a café as well as a hotel, but only those lucky enough to work for the John Lewis Partnership can stay here, as it is owned by them. The data I have is that there is a long waiting list!
25 25 Back on the Quay, there are haunted pubs! The King Charles Pub dates all the way back to the 1300s when it was a wool house! Incredible. The Custom House, now a wonderful place to sit and have a coffee or meal, is famous for the smuggling episode some 250 years ago when 30 ‘savage’ smugglers forced there way in and stole 2 ton of tea. Those were the days… There is even an old prison, called Fish Street Gaol. Can you find it? Continuing past the Georgian House, Hotel du Vin, there are some very old Almshouses (a house founded by charity, offering accommodation for poor people) dating back to Henry V. In fact, if local history is your interest then the Poole Museum also houses the Local History Centre. It is based in the historic Town Cellars, where you can learn more about the history of Poole and it’s people. It is a fascinating place to visit, all free of charge and Nellie highly recommends it. For children on the quay there are amusement arcades, an illuminated pirate, crazy golf course which is indoors, above the amusement arcade, so ideal if the weather is not so good… and plenty of ice cream sellers!

One of Poole’s haunted pubs! We love Banana Wharf for lunch. The views are perfect, whether the weather is good or bad, so do mention Nellie to the manager there and give him a big “Hello” from Dorset Publications! One last thing, the shops. Nellie loves “Pavers”, the shoe shop, and has more shoes than she needs, or even her cupboards can store, but hey that’s girls for you. We are well known for it! There is also the nationally and even internationally famous Poole Pottery. The large, open plan shop is great to look around, buy Birthday presents, gifts with “Poole” on them for those out of town, or just a special something for yourself. There is also a place for children to paint a pot themselves. Ideal for Grandma or Grandad. So, do take a day out to our wonderful town of Poole. It has a lot to offer for all ‘shapes and sizes’, all weathers and any time of the year. Nellie hopes you find something new and exciting. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

LIVING CRAFT – A host of talent Christchurch Priory Church will be buzzing with activity from 8th to 12th June when a variety of local craftspeople gather to demonstrate their skills in this beautiful setting. Once again the emphasis at this popular biennial event is on being inspired to learn. There will be plenty of information about courses and classes which are available locally and craftspeople will be happy to talk about their work and answer questions. There will be a wide variety of crafts including cane, rush and seagrass work, stained glass, wood turning, jewellery making, basket making, ceramics, pottery, china painting, leather work, textiles (embroidery, lace, quilting, handbags, cushions, bears, knitwear), floral decoration not to mention paintings in different media. There will also be musical interludes and of course the opportunity to purchase original locally handcrafted items at affordable prices. The exhibition is open between 10am and 4pm daily and admission is by donation to the Church (3.30pm finish on Friday). The event is organised by CADArts, a registered charity run by volunteers to promote and encourage the arts in
Christchurch and district. CADArts run a number of events throughout the year and details of these can be found in the Diary of Art Events which is published twice a year and which can be obtained free of charge from the Hayloft Gallery in Wick Lane, Christchurch or from Christchurch Information Centre. New Milton Decorative & Fine Arts Society supports learning disability charity Pottery students at the Stable Family Home Trust near Ringwood were delighted to receive a donation of £500 from New Milton Decorative & Fine Arts Society towards new equipment for their thriving pottery. The cheque includes a further donation from a member of the Society to enable the Trust to acquire a dedicated printer and the special Decal paper to allow the students to transfer their drawings on to their ceramic work. The pots they produce are sold through the charity’s own shop, Gifted, in Highcliffe and raise money for the varied activities available to daily and residential service users, such as woodwork, cookery, IT and money skills, as well as dance and drama ‘We aim to engage the public in our work’ said Marion Davies, Head of Fundraising. ‘Our retail outlet, Gifted,
is not the usual charity shop – we have pottery demonstrations by the students helping to run the shop, and we encourage them to take control of their own lives and develop social skills as well as personal aspirations’. The beautiful gardens at The Stables provide an appropriate backdrop for much of the ceramic work by the students, including illuminated garden sculptures by Richard Tatem, who received the cheque on behalf of the charity, which was presented by Philip Benstead, Chairman of New Milton Decorative & Fine Arts Society. The Society’s Young Arts Project promotes the work of organisations providing help and support to develop skills and interests of students in all branches of the arts. The Stable Family Home Trust is the 2015 recipient of this special award.
