My desire to perform started young, and I enjoyed many years at both Spotlight school of dance and Swish of the Curtain drama school. Council hand keys to Mudeford Wood Community Centre over Christchurch councillors have handed over the keys to Mudeford Wood Community Centre to members of the community. The facility will now be managed by Mudeford Wood Community Trust, an independent notfor-profit organisation. The transfer comes following a consultation held by the Council at the end of 2009 about the future of the Community Centre. Members of the local community presented a petition asking that the facility be retained and a ‘Friends of Mudeford Wood’ organisation was formed. After a series of negotiations, in September 2011 the Council agreed to transfer the management of the building to the Trust and also agreed to grants of £28,000 to carry out essential repairs to the outside courts, £22,000 to carry out maintenance works to the Centre, first year employee costs of £40,000 and a first year revenue grant of £20,000 reduced to £18,000 for future years and reviewed after five years. Cllr Ray Nottage, Leader of Christchurch Council, said: “Over the long term this transfer will be making savings for the Christchurch council tax payers. I wish the Trust well and look forward to seeing how they develop the Centre.” Cllr Lesley Dedman, ward councillor, added: “I’m really supportive of what the trustees are doing and wish them all success for the future. I do hope the community will support them and get involved.” Dawn Brookes, chairman of the Trust, said: “After more than two years of hard work the community has finally taken over the Community Centre. We hope it remains a hub for the community and we are able to grow it. We have started sprucing up the place but of course that takes money. However, now we

are in control we can start applying for grants. ”We’re very grateful to the Friends of Mudeford Wood – more than 200 of them – who have contributed so much since we started this process.” Fellow trustee Liz Sabey added: “Without the support of the Council and the start-up grants, along with the help of our sponsors, we wouldn’t have been able to get going.” The Trust has a Board of nine volunteer trustees but is in need of someone with financial skills, perhaps a retired accountant, to join the Board. DIGITAL CINEMA ARRIVES IN CHRISTCHURCH The Future of Cinema is assured at the Regent It will be out with the old and in with the new as The Regent Centre in Christchurch comes well and truly into the 21st Century, as 35mm celluloid film is replaced by state of the art Digital Cinema. The Regent’s General Manager, Eliot Walker is celebrating the future of Cinema in Christchurch in a special photo (opposite) in front of the Regent with a reel of the old 35mm Celluloid and a new Digital Drive. The future of cinema in Christchurch is assured. Speaking on the night of the Premiere of Digital Cinema in Christchurch on Monday 23 April, the Regent’s General Manager, Eliot Walker, said, “This has to be one of our proudest moments here at the Regent. It is the culmination of four years hard work to ensure the future of cinema at the Regent Centre. I would also like to thank all of our patrons who rallied round with donations totalling £8500, which helped to bring this project to fruition. The total investment in the new Digital Cinema system, which includes a new Silver Screen and new Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound, totals over £120,000 made up from public donations, industry grants and Regent Centre Funds. In the end, perhaps the most difficult moment was manhandling the new 133kg Digital Projector up to the projection box, high up on the roof of the Regent. My Technical staff and volunteers are still recovering but it has all been worthwhile and we have a full house for our first Digital film at the Regent, The Artist.”

There is a certain delicious irony attached to all this that could only happen at the movies. As state of the art digital projection arrives at the Regent, the first film to be seen on the new equipment, The Artist (PG), will be in black & white and is a silent film, albeit with a musical soundtrack. However, it is an absolute classic that can only be enhanced by being shown on the new screen with the digital projector. The Regent opened its doors to the public on Boxing Day 1931 and up until about 1951, the cinema ran with highly flammable nitrate film, which explains why the projection box is isolated high on the Regent’s roof. From 1951 – 2012 the film shown at the Regent was 35mm celluloid. This has now been replaced by digital film that will arrive on a computer hard drive which will be downloaded on to the digital projector for screening at the Regent. Digital film is now a world wide industry standard. All of the major chains like Odeon, Cineworld and Empire have changed over to it and soon 35mm celluloid will become a thing of the past for new film releases. Indeed, industry insiders are predicting that by the middle of 2013, that most of the major film Distributors will only be providing Digital versions of their latest blockbusters. However, for the traditionalists, the Regent’s 35mm projector is being mothballed and kept on site for the time being.

Cinema makes a vital contribution to the success of the Regent, attracting over 100,000 people through its doors annually, so the upgrading of the film projector is an essential investment in the future of the Centre for the Borough. Digital Cinema will also enable the Regent to continue with its live satellite broadcasts to the big screen from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, National Theatre in London and Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Indeed the digital projector will allow the Regent to expand its programme with additional world class satellite broadcasts from other international arts organisations.

Finding Hidden Treasure in Dorset If you have never heard of “geocaching” before and you like walking, or you have children that you would like to get out of the house and get some fresh air, then this is definitely something you will like. What’s more is it is free! All you need is a GPS device which you can buy from Argos, Amazon or local outdoor equipment stockists for example, or you maybe able to use your phone for which you can get an App. You then go online to www.geocaching.com where it is free to register. There are literally thousands of walks that people have added and they are in practically every area you can think of across the country (and even abroad!). Now, this is not just an ordinary walk… there is treasure to find! Well actually it is a box of trinkets into which people have put all sorts of little things. It could be a large ‘cache’ (meaning hiding place especially of hidden goods, treasure) or a tiny something to find. The idea of the walk is to find the treasure. It is ideal for children who would otherwise severely object to even the thought of walking! Hayden, our son always responds with a

Some spectacular views along the coast big “Yeah!” when I say we are all going out to do a geocache. He doesn’t even look at me if I say I want to go out for a walk! There are two types of geocache… one that just gives you the coordinates to get somewhere and you follow that until you find it. At the end of the ‘hunt’ you are given a clue to find the treasure. The second type is good for younger children as it gives lots of clues and there are lots of questions as you go along. This is called a multi cache. We like those the best. Every ten minutes or so there is a question about where you are. You need to answer the question to get the coordinates to be able to carry on. At the finale you get a clue to find a hidden box or similar object, often containing a little book to write your name in or a comment and then you can exchange a little trinket for something you want to leave behind. All great fun! Free and it gets us out of the house, enjoying the English country side, seaside, forest, in fact anywhere and everywhere. did three geocaches starting at Durlston Country Park. A lovely cup of coffee and a piece of cake overlooking the fantastic British coastline set us off on the right foot. It was absolutely gorgeous, blue sky, blue sea and perfect temperature. I really enjoyed the whole day. What is funny, is seeing adults getting very competitive about finding the ‘cache’ first! There was a buzz of excitement as each of us rummaged through the undergrowth to find the treasure. At the last cache, after walking for over an hour, my sister and I decided to sit and take in the amazing view and let the others ‘fight for their supremacy’. We sat on a very comfortable rock and relaxed. After 10 minutes or so watching our friends busy hunting I was sitting on it all the time! or old, fit or not so fit. You can even create your own for others to follow, once you get the hang of it. Why not do one yourself and send me some photos for us to print in the magazine for you? She casually put her hand down, into a small crevice in the rock and pulled out the box! We couldn’t believe it, it was very funny… though I am not sure all of the others thought it was as funny as we did… You can see some photos of our day. I highly recommend geocaching. It is definitely something you should try young
