Dorset Quirky Facts With its picture perfect landscapes and glorious Jurassic coastline, Dorset is certainly a sparkling gem on the crown of Great Britain. Indeed, with a history that delves into some of the most exciting events of bygone eras, from distinguished Dorset heroes to praise from Daniel Defoe himself, here is just a handful of the quirkiest facts from our beautiful county. 1. Both visitors and locals alike can surely testify to the beauty of the Jurassic Coast, however did you know that it is not only humans who are especially fond of the beautiful waters? There are roughly ten different animal species that have been spotted in Dorset waters including white-beaked, porpoises, common, striped-beaked and bottlenose dolphins. In fact, some dolphins are such frequent visitors that they have almost become old friends to the avid watchers who spot them regularly. 2. No coastal county’s history would be complete without a few good tales of the smugglers and certainly Dorset is no exception. The Smuggler’s Inn in Osmington dates as far back as the 13th century but is more notorious for its once being the base of renowned French smuggler Pierre Latour who, it is rumoured, was caught after a Revenue man hid up the chimney to gather evidence against him! 3. Dorset has always been celebrated for its relaxing tranquility and beautiful scenery
and has welcomed many writers and artists from across the nation to come and be inspired. One such author was beloved children’s writer Enid Blyton who wrote an abundance of books and stories of adventures and famous characters. Blyton would visit Dorset, especially Swanage and Studland and stay at various hotels including Knoll House Hotel, several times throughout the year. Many avid fans of her books can spot similarities between her writings and local landmarks. 4. Did you know that Bournemouth witnessed the death of one of Britain’s most celebrated men, Charles Rolls in the summer of 1910? Charles Rolls, of globally renowned partnership Rolls Royce, was an avid pilot and had previously accomplished many impressive feats in his aircraft as well as (earlier) crossing the channel in a balloon. On the day of his death he was performing as part of an aircraft display at Hengistbury Airfield before tragically becoming the first person to die in such an accident in Britain. 5. Did you know that the Dorset town of Blandford Forum, itself an historic market town, was also famed throughout the country and further afield for its lace? Although there were several lace towns throughout Britain, not many received the accolade that Blandford did when Daniel Defoe commented that the town produced “the finest bonelace in England... I think I never saw better in Flanders, France or Italy”. Praise indeed! by Mica Bale

Talking about Wildlife...
Win for wildlife The marsh fritillary is one of the most interesting bu�erflies in Dorset and is the most a�ractive and colourful of the fritillaries. O�en considered the ‘stained glass window’ of bu�erflies, they have small wings but are very recognisable with a bright, intricate pa�ern of white, orange and black markings.
The damp grassland habitat, which is their main habitat, has been lost nationally due agriculturalimprovement and drainage in the landscape. However, due to careful habitat management over the last 10 years, they have been found to be thriving on one of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves, Bracke�s Coppice. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Living Landscapes Ecologist, Steve Masters said, “The most reliable method to record the numbers of marsh fritillaries is to count the larva webs in autumn or in spring a�er the winter hibernation. Eggs are laid in large batches, of up to 300, and the caterpillars aggregate in webs which can be counted relatively easily.” Marsh fritillaries prefer to hibernate in tussocks of grass as caterpillars (which are jet black in colour) and emerge in warm weather – as early as February or March, if the winter isn’t too cold. Basking in the sun as caterpillars, they will then pupate and emerge as adult bu�erflies on the wing in late May, early June. These remarkable bu�erflies have a few challenges ahead of them including their loss of habitat, but also the parasitic wasp, which can be deadly to them by laying their eggs inside the caterpillar and devouring it.
Steve continues, “Their food plant is Devils bit-scabious, and we have plenty of that at Bracke�s Coppice. Marsh fritillaries love damp grassland, purple moor grass, and chalk, all of which we have in west Dorset. To help accommodate these bu�erflies we’ve adapted the management of Bracke�’s Coppice slightly to ensure the amount of grazing creates the right habitat for them, providing the right structure for all stages of their life cycle. We even removed one field from the previous hay cu�ng regime and grazed instead, and we were delighted to see marsh fritillaries breeding in this field for the first time, as a result.” These management techniques are being used on other suitable nature reserves, and in 2019, the highest number of marsh fritillary larval webs, since monitoring began, were found on Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve in west Dorset, with 38 being counted. Myth busting with LPAs You may have seen our earlier article on The Reasons to have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). However, there are common misconceptions on why an LPA may not be necessary which this article explores further. 1. “I don’t need an LPA because my next of kin can make important decisions on my behalf.” Not true. No-one can act on your behalf or make decisions on your behalf if they have not been legally authorised to do so, not even your next of kin. 2. “My partner and I have joint bank accounts, so we don’t need LPAs.” Not true. This always alarms couples the most, when they are told that even if they have a joint bank account the partner may not be able to automatically access funds to pay for bills, mortgage or general expenses. If one of you were to lose capacity, the bank can remove access and freeze the account until it receives a copy of a registered LPA. This can be an extremely stressful time for the partner. 3. “I have appointed executors in my Will, so they’ll be able to make decisions on my behalf.” Not true. A Will is entirely separate to an LPA. Executors appointed in a Will only have the power or authority to distribute your estate as requested and in line with your Will, on your death. They have no authority to make decisions on your behalf during your lifetime. 4. “I don’t need an LPA until I become elderly and in ill health.” Not true. An LPA can be made by anyone
over the age of 18 who has full mental capacity. Someone may lose capacity and no longer be able to make decisions due to an accident, being in a coma or mental illness. The sooner you arrange an LPA the better as you will have peace of mind knowing provisions are already in place in the event of the unthinkable happening. If you wait and lose capacity in that time, it will be too late to arrange an LPA and your loved ones will need to apply for a Deputyship Order from the Court of Protection. This not only takes a long time but is also a costly process. 5. “Once my Health and Welfare LPA is registered, it means someone else can make decisions for me and I don’t want that while I still have capacity.” Not true. A Health and Welfare LPA only comes into effect when the donor loses capacity even if the LPA has been registered. All the while you can make your own Health and Welfare decisions you will continue to do so. 6. “Getting an LPA is expensive.” Not true. It does not have to be expensive with Dorset & Wight. (See our prices opposite). The cost of registering an LPA is a maximum of £82 per document. In comparison, if you fail to make an LPA and lose capacity, your family will be left with no other option but to apply for a Deputyship Order. This will cost considerably more.

Stride out and Walk for Hope Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its fourth year on Sunday 7th June, and the charity would love more walkers than ever to put their best foot forward and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer. Three hundred people and 30 dogs took part in the 2019 walk. Together they raised £50,000. Participants can choose from a five, 10 or 20-mile route, making the event accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities. Dan Bateman walked the ten-mile route in 2019 with his wife Ashleen who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. He said: “The months leading up to the walk had obviously been really tough for us, so taking part in Walk for Hope was something really positive to focus on. Everyone who took part was really friendly and because we’ve all been touched by cancer in some way, there was a real sense of community and support. It wasn’t a race because we really felt like we were on the same team.” Dan says he recognises that taking part in a charity event can be daunting, but advises anyone thinking about it to, “go for it”: “Walk for Hope was great because it was challenging, but there was a choice of distances so as many people as possible could get involved. You can view it as a gentle stroll or be more competitive with yourself. Ten miles tested us more than we had thought and the legs were a bit sore the next day, but we felt a real sense of achievement when we crossed the finish line. We were spurred on by everyone around us and knowing we were doing it for a brilliant cause. And of course the promise of a burger at the end!” Catherine Lawry from Wessex Cancer Trust who’s organising the event, said: “The peace and beauty of the New Forest make it a fitting setting to come together to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer, and
we would love 2020 to be the biggest and best yet.” Entrants will receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, training and fundraising tips, and membership to our Team Wessex Facebook group where they can meet other supporters and share fundraising ideas and photos. After being cheered over the finish line, walkers will receive a medal and celebrate with wellearned refreshments. Tickets are £15 for a child under 16, £25 for adults and £75 for a team of four, with a sponsorship goal of £200. The Adventures of Daichi
The Dorset Directories Camper Van Daichi the Dashing Dude, otherwise known as the Dorset Directories Campervan, decided to be a Time Machine last month, but instead of casting with Michael J Fox, loved by many in his role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, Daichi chose myself and Hayden as the lead roles, to go ‘back to the past’. To Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire in fact. Having travelled all the way from Japan, Daichi wanted to know what it was like here in Medieval Britain. I had not driven Daichi for quite some time, so was a little nervous, as he can get pretty playful and does like to wave at passers by with his window wipers instead of indicating where he is going. This has nothing to do with me forgetting what I am doing of course and that the buttons are the ‘other way round’. In addition to that Daichi chose a route that was on single track roads for some of the time. Really. When we saw the bright white reverse lights of the car in front and its boot springing

Daichi taking Debbie & Hayden to Wardour towards us, I was quick to react and avoided Daichi head butting this car’s bottom. That was not a pretty sight. We arrived safely and as I parked and switched off Daichi’s purring engine, the sliding side door suddenly sprang open and an apple, that had rolled out of the picnic bag, flew out! Literally. Hayden laughed loudly. Daichi really was being playful and had obviously been wrapped up too long in the cold garden. Again, this was nothing to do with me pressing any wrong buttons… I just don’t know how you can think that. Wardour Castle is a delight. Ideal for children to run around and explore, and romantic for us oldies to look longingly at the rolling English countryside and imagine what life was like back in the 14th Century. The ladies dreaming of those long flowing gowns and the men with shoulders back, chests puffed out and manly swords in their hands. I know that is very stereo type and I really am showing my age now. Daichi, who we

29 know is very proud, could certainly see himself as a Mediaeval Knight in very shiny armour… The castle in fact was built when we, the English, were busy fighting the 100 Years War in France. Wiltshire was a relatively safe location. Designed as a six-sided house with rooms for guests to specifically impress everyone with its status, grandeur and power. It was a house to show off who John, 5th Lord Lovell really was. How connected he was to High Society and the Crown. Built in the fourteenth century, totally as a lavish home to entertain guests and eat like kings while beautifully placed in the peaceful countryside with a magnificent lake full of fish. No mote or high defences. It does have small, slit windows on the ground floor, but this castle was clearly built for luxury living. You can still walk up the spiral staircase to the top of the fifth floor and marvel at the views. Cooking is not my favourite occupation, but back in those days with two huge fires, spit roasts and huge boiling pans it would have been a hell of a job. No wonder the scullions, seen as the lowest of the low in those days, worked almost naked! Do not try this at home… The Hall were the owners and their guests “Castle’s-eye” view ate on the over the lake other hand
had large windows and an extended door, to show their wealth and sophistication. There was a balcony where the musicians tunefully soothed their Debbie explores opulent guests the grotto below. The class difference is clearly visible. There is a Great Chamber, an inner private room with even higher ceilings, where only the very important guests were invited. Sadly, The Civil War destroyed the building in 1644. There is a new castle nearby, but this magnificent building was left to stand as a romantic ruin for all to admire and now belongs to English Heritage. The Grotto in the secluded gardens is inspiring. Totally man-made in 1792 by Josiah Lane of Tisbury and his father. With nooks and crannies to explore by both the young and the old. There are seats of stone, stalactites and stalagmites, rocks, algae, ivy and an atmosphere. Love it. I can see why Kevin Costner came here to film “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves”! That would have been exciting to see. Daichi was as proud as punch that we had so much fun. Nothing like a bit of history to keep the wheels turning… and Daichi certainly likes to do just that! The Silver Screen at the Regent turns Golden The silver screen at the Regent in Christchurch has turned to gold once again for this thriving independent cinema, theatre and concert hall situated in the heart of Christchurch’s High Street. On Thursday 13 February 2020, the Event Cinema Association members gathered at the Vue West End cinema in London to hear an overview of the year 2019 for the industry across the UK and to award trophies for outstanding contributions to Event Cinema during 2019. The Regent in Christchurch was awarded the prize for the Best Independent UK Exhibitor 2019 for the Highest Box Office Returns in Event Cinema. The conference heard that the UK represents the biggest market in the world for Event Cinema audiences and that makes the Regent a world-beater! The Best Independent UK Exhibitor Award is a brand-new award from the Event Cinema Association and the Regent in Christchurch is the inaugural winner! The day was hosted by Tom Linay, Content Business Director at Digital Cinema Media and was kick-started by celebrating the successes of 2019 with international insights from Comscore’s Luke Williams, who collates box office results for films and event cinema around the world. The event showcased a selection of new 2020 event cinema titles from over 12 different content providers, with the day concluding with the ECA Box Office Awards 2019. The ECA awards – sponsored by Encompass – recognise the global box office takings for ECA members with the top performing titles in the following categories – Ballet, Concert, Opera and Theatre. This year there were two new categories for the awards to recognise the box office takings for exhibitor members – Independent UK Exhibitor and International Exhibitor of the year 2019. Event Cinema refers to the use of cinemas to screen a varied range of live or pre-recorded entertainment, such as: sport, opera, musicals, ballet, one-off TV
specials, current affairs, comedy and live gaming, which distinguishes it from traditional films and cinema releases. Regent Centre General Manager, Matthew Vass-White, was at the Vue West End to receive the trophy and warm congratulations from fellow ECA members as he was invited on to the podium to collect the trophy from Nigel Crow of Encompass and ensure its safe delivery to the Regent. Matthew said “I am delighted to receive this award on behalf of all the staff, volunteers and the Board of Directors at the Regent. It is wonderful recognition of all the hard work that everyone puts in as a team to make the Regent the success it is today.” Recent achievements by the Regent in the world of Event Cinema have included: a record- breaking sell-out of Les Miserables - The Staged Concert on Monday 2 December when all 480 seats at the Centre sold out in three hours flat. Then, following a second Encore showing of Les Miserables – The Staged Concert, the distributor, Dan Butler at Universal Pictures UK, contacted the management to tell them that the Regent “was the highest grossing independent cinema and have achieved a gross in line with some of the circuits which have multiple screens. Thank you very much for all your efforts!” The Regent was also the highest grossing independent cinema in the UK for Kinky Boots the Musical, 42nd Street and for the fifth year running, for Andre Rieu’s concerts.

GUIDE Carrots
There is absolutely nothing like a carrot pulled fresh from the ground... ...that wonderful smell, which soon disappears and is never apparent in shop bought ones and the taste of that sweet orange root can only be achieved by growing your own. They can be sown from March to July and can be grown in containers at least 12 inches deep. Like any plant with a long tap root, carrots do not like being transplanted so should be sown directly into the soil where they are to grow. They are happiest in light, rather sandy soil so if you have heavy clay, you should add plenty of sharp sand (not builders sand) Germination won't be so good if the soil hasn't warmed up and it's best to sow the seed into well prepared soil that has already been watered. It is important to sow the seed as thinly as
possible, which isn't easy as the seed is so small. Try mixing it with a handful of sand which stops the seed from sticking together and makes it easier to see where they're going. However careful you are, the seedlings will probably need thinning at least once to give the carrots room to swell. This operation is best carried out in the evening as carrot fly can be a problem, particularly in early summer when they lay their eggs around the roots) They are attracted by the smell of disturbed plants and thinning’s should be moved away immediately. Try growing chives, onions or garlic around the carrots to mask the smell or you could put fleece (available from garden centres or some hardware shops) over the carrots after sowing.

Road Safety: Breakdown Advice Breaking down on the road can be a frustrating, unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous and scary, experience. Every year, people are killed or seriously injured while stopped on the roadside, but many drivers don’t know how to keep safe in the event of a breakdown. Motorway breakdowns In a breakdown situation, the most important thing for drivers to consider is the safety of themselves and other road users, particularly on high speed roads like motorways. Hard shoulders are extremely dangerous places – one in 11 motorway deaths involve a vehicle on, entering or leaving the hard shoulder. If your vehicle develops a problem on the motorway: • if your car develops a fault but you can continue driving, leave the motorway at the next available exit and stop at the service area; • if the problem requires you to stop immediately, pull onto the hard shoulder and stop as far away from the traffic as you can, with the wheels turned to the left, if possible next to an emergency phone; • never use a warning triangle on the hard shoulder of the motorway, as walking along the hard shoulder to place a warning triangle puts you at risk of being hit;
• never sit in your vehicle on the hard shoulder, even if the weather is bad. This is dangerous as you are at risk of being struck from behind at high speed; • put on your hazard lights and get out on the left hand side, and wait on the verge, well away from traffic; • anybody who is unable to leave the vehicle, for example someone with mobility issues, should wait inside the vehicle with their seatbelt securely fastened. • Never be tempted to try and fix your vehicle on the hard shoulder yourself – this is dangerous. Call for help instead, using an emergency phone if one is accessible without walking along the hard shoulder. These connect directly to the police control centre, and are numbered so that you can easily be located. Blue and white marker posts show the direction to the nearest phone. Using the hard shoulder is legally permitted in only three instances:

43 in a breakdown, an emergency, or if being pulled over by the police. Making a phone call, taking a toilet break or reading a map are not acceptable reasons to stop on the hard shoulder. Breakdowns on any other type of road If you breakdown somewhere other than the motorway, follow these guidelines to keep as safe as possible: • if it is possible, avoid stopping in a dangerous place, such as on a roundabout, on a corner or near a brow. If you can safely keep driving for a short distance, drop your speed, use your hazard lights and try to pull off the road completely or in a location where you’re clearly visible; • if you have to stop on a road, switch your hazard lights on. Only display an emergency triangle at least 45 metres behind your vehicle if it is safe for you to
do so. Do not put yourself in a risky situation in putting out the triangle, and never use one on the hard shoulder of a motorway; • do not attempt to fix your vehicle yourself at the roadside. Call a breakdown service; • switch your engine off and stand as far away from the road as possible so you are not close to passing traffic; • if you are involved in a crash that is serious, obstructs the road, or involves injuries, call the emergency services as soon as possible. If you have first aid training, provide appropriate, immediate help to anyone who is hurt. Make sure you are prepared in case you breakdown by: • carrying a mobile phone so that you can call for assistance, but on the motorway use a roadside phone if possible; • carrying a map so you can easily explain where you are when calling for assistance. You can use a map app on your phone, but you may not have signal if you breakdown somewhere remote; • keeping an emergency kit in your car, which should have a torch, a warning triangle, warm clothes and a reflective jacket or vest. Naturally good... Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears
Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c. 2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump. 3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture. 4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions). 5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath). 6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish). 7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight. 8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized. 9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.
