We have also managed to book a holiday in April on the Greek island of Santorini! Some may remember that I fell in love with this island last year on our cruise with Mum and Dad, for Dad’s 80th Birthday. When I saw a bargain on the internet I couldn’t resist. We will be right on the volcanic Perissa beach, so I will certainly get to gaze at the magnificent waters again. Then in August we have booked a camping trip! Nellie can hardly contain herself and is really excited about taking us to Devon where Hayden will enter his first surf life saving competition in the sea. It is always good to have something to look forward to, don’t you think? For now it is work and sorting the house and garden out. There is quite a bit to do. Did you make lots of New Year’s resolutions and are still successfully carrying them out? I do hope so. Highcliffe School’s Charity Milestone Highcliffe School is immensely proud of the tireless commitment that our students, staff and parents show in raising money for good causes. Charity events can range from activities that involve the whole school, such as the Big Walk, which raises thousands of pounds, be the focus of many year group activities, or be organised by small groups and individuals, such as sponsored silences and cake sales. Over time, even the smallest contributions can add up to a surprising amount. This was the case recently, when Highcliffe School was contacted by Julia’s House to inform us that over the last ten years, Highcliffe has raised a superb £10 000 for them. Julia’s House is Dorset’s only hospice dedicated to children with life-limiting conditions and is a regular charity focus across the school. To celebrate this achievement, representatives from Julia’s House are visiting the School on a number of different days to deliver assemblies to every year group, explaining the work that they do and passing on their thanks to all the pupils for their hard work and support. In a recent visit, Laura Kelly, Community Fundraiser met with Headteacher, Patrick Earnshaw and members of the School Council to do just this. Laura said, “We at Julia’s House would like to thank the staff and students of Highcliffe School for their generosity. We are immensely
grateful that the school have continually supported us over the years and have been delighted to deliver assemblies to every year group. Highcliffe School has raised an incredible £10,000 which will pay for more than 330 hours of care. Our respite care means so much to parents who are looking after a very sick child 24 hours a day. It gives them time out with their partners, their other children or simply a chance to catch up with some day-to-day tasks, safe in the knowledge their child is being looked after by people they know and trust. Thank you so much Highcliffe School, your support really will make a difference.” Julia’s House will continue to be a key charity focus for Highcliffe School. All money raised will help Julia’s House continue to maximise and enrich the life quality of Dorset-based children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and support their families and loved ones. Experiment at Christchurch Quay to help encourage people to take their litter home In an experiment aimed at encouraging people to take their litter home, litter bins are to be removed from Christchurch Quay from 1 March 2016. They will be replaced with signs asking people to take their litter home with them and use their kerbside recycling and waste service to dispose of their litter. Cllr Margaret Phipps, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Christchurch Council, said: “It costs £175,000 a year to deal with litter in Christchurch, money which could be used for so many other uses. “There is no reason why people should leave litter anywhere but unfortunately there are some people who think it’s
reasonable to leave their litter for somebody else to clear up. “Removing the litter bins is quite a radical approach to tackling the litter problem and we will have to see if it works. If people bring picnics to the Quay how difficult is it for them to take the wrappers, empty bottles, etc home with them and dispose of them in their waste or recycling bins? “We hope that people will get behind this initiative and help us to keep our environment litter free.” When events are held at Christchurch Quay the event holders must arrange for litter to be cleared on a regular basis as part of their licence to hold the event.
Highcliffe Castle’s Easter Trail Highcliffe Castle’s annual Easter Trail is almost here! We offer another “eggciting” fun packed Easter trail for all the family to enjoy. From Monday the 28th to Thursday the 31st of March, families can perfect their spotting skills by finding all the Easter chicks hidden in the Castle grounds. Talking about Wildlife...
The March Hare The sight of a brown Hare, poised for action at any moment, is a wonderful thing, and for many is something they’d like to tick off their wildlife bucket list. In the South West, a quarter of the estimated 800,000 population of Hares can be found. Here in Dorset we are blessed with a few hotspots for Hare watching, including Chesil Beach, Cranborne Chase and the Cerne Valley. If you are lucky enough to see one, the chances are it won’t stay around for long. With the ability to run up to speeds of 45mph these sprightly and athletic animals are well-equipped for survival in harsh habitats, which is often in the open, exposed to the elements. In addition to being the UK’s fastest land mammal, they also have near-360 degree vision. One thing Hares are well known for is their ‘boxing’ abilities during the breeding season. This display of aggression, which is usually females denying persistent partners, can be observed in spring and summer. The frenzied display is the reason they’ve earned their reputation ‘mad as a March hare’.
However, Hare numbers are sadly dwindling, with a 75% decline in their populations since the Second World War. There are many complex reasons for this decline, including intensification of agriculture and changes in the patterns of land use. Their ideal habitat is grassland and arable areas, and rather than burrowing like rabbits, they create shallow forms in the grass, and use woods, hedges or fields, where they rest during the day. However when disturbed they can be seen bounding across fields, using their powerful hind legs to propel them forwards, often in a zigzag pattern! Whilst Hares can be seen all year round, as they don’t hibernate, it is often easier to see them in the early morning and late evening this time of year, due to lack of foliage in the landscape. Whilst in times gone by it was considered ‘bad luck’ for a hare to cross your path, seeing a Hare is a rare and wonderful sight – just make sure you’re quick with your camera if you want to capture the moment. Changes to Inheritance Tax At present everyone has a nil rate band (’NRB’) of £325,000 which can be left free of inheritance tax upon their death. If a person dies leaving all their assets to their spouse or civil partner, 100% of their nil rate band can be transferred to the surviving spouse. The rate is applied at the date of second death. When the second spouse or civil partner dies they can leave up to £650,000 of assets to whoever they wish, free of inheritance tax.

What is shared parental leave? Shared parental leave (‘SPL’) is a way for both parents to share leave and pay at the birth or adoption of a child. It applies to children who were expected to be born, or placed for adoption after the 5th April 2015. Parents do not have to be employees in order to be eligible to take part in the scheme. They must be ‘economically active’. To participate, the mother or primary adopter must either return to work or curtail their maternity or adoption leave or, where they are not entitled to leave, curtail their maternity or adoption pay or maternity allowance period. They must serve a curtailment notice at least eight weeks before the date on which the mother or primary adopter wishes their leave or pay entitlement to end. The mother/ primary adopter must serve either a notice of entitlement
From 2017 there will be an additional allowance for a deceased’s main residence when it is left to a direct descendant. From 2017 to 2018 this allowance will be £100,000 and increases at yearly intervals up to 2021 when it will be £175,000 for every person and thereafter it will continue to increase in line with the Consumer Price Index. This also applies where the deceased has either sold their main residence or downsized after July 2015. The cash proceeds of sale, up to the allowance limit, can be left to direct descendants free of tax. This additional allowance does not apply where an estate is worth over £2million and it is reduced by £1 for every £2 over that threshold. Like the standard nil rate band, the residence allowance can be transferred to the surviving spouse or civil partner. By 2021 a couple will have a joint NRB of £650,000 for all assets with a further £350,000 tax free allowance which applies only to their main property.
And intention to take SPL (see below), or a declaration that their partner has served such a notice. An employer that receives a notice of entitlement and intention to take SPL may request a copy of the child’s birth certificate or documents notifying the primary adopter that the child was to be placed with them, together with the name and address of the other parent’s employer. THE SHOW MUST GO ON... and it certainly has! Milton Musical Society the well known Musical Theatre company based in New Milton celebrates 47 years producing and performing Musicals in New Milton and Christchurch. As Milton Musical Society prepares for It’s next production, Fiddler On The Roof, at the Regent Centre In Christchurch, rehearsals are already well underway and It’s a tough schedule for the cast and production team of over sixty. With three rehearsals each week up to show week in April, The cast are busy learning songs, dance routines and the all important lines. Fifty consumes and a multitude of props are being made, begged and borrowed and the orchestra are being assembled and briefed by the Musical Director. Milton Musical Society (MMS) was established in 1968 by a small but determined group of Musical theatre performers and fans who began presenting shows at a hall at Arnewood School. In those early days the group would produced one show “Big” show each year, but a little latter in the 70’s the group added a second show. Notable shows performed in the 70’s included, The King and I, HMS Pinafore and Oklahoma. Also in the 70’s MMS began performing at New Milton Memorial Hall playing to bigger audiences, however in 1979 a fire destroyed the Memorial hall and it took a further two years to rebuild it. As Ann Jagger, a member then and now recalls, MMS was heavily involved in the rebuilding
process, some of the members working “Day and Night” to ensure the Hall was presentable for their forthcoming production, and amongst other things, staging a “24 hour Singalong” to raise much needed funds.. The 1996 production was, coincidently, Fiddler on the roof and is well remembered for the Leading Man suffering a heart attack during the penultimate performance! The outcome, I’m happy to report was that MMS was able to find a replacement actor who had just finished playing the part in Plymouth, and who came hotfoot and gave a very accomplished performance, and the heart attack victim, thankfully made a full recovery! In the 90’s MMS moved on again and now presents shows at the newly renovated and much enhanced Regent Centre in Christchurch. With a seating capacity of 480 and five performances we expect an audience of over 2000 will watch us perform this award winning show, Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Barbara Evans and featuring those wonderful songs, “If I were a rich man”, “Matchmaker Matchmaker” and “Sunrise Sunset”. The Adventures of Nellie
The Dorset Publications Camper Van Oh boy did we had a fright a few weeks ago when Nellie found herself in snow near East Grinstead! After a day of being parked in the freezing cold she refused to move, or at least her engine did start but she screamed out in pain and gusts of smoke flew from her nostrils. (It is one way we women can make a point...) I wasn’t there and when Stephen called me to say he was awaiting the RAC man, I was worried. As you know Nellie certainly is not as young as she used to be, has done a lot of running around, and her arthritis can get her down. Would she pull through? Would she get back on that motorway? Well, amazingly she did. The belt around her power steering had slipped and once back in place she stopped yelling and the smoke diminished. Now can you believe it? As a result of this incident Nellie now has a friend, and one she is rather fond of. Stephen has bought himself a handsome car of steel, full of gusto and muscle (Nellie will have to watch herself). It is a Mazda RX8, silver and definitely has charm. “Mighty Rex” we have named him. The excuse for buying the car was to help Nellie. Ummmm... Stephen sold me well on that one. After all Nellie is getting on a bit and since I had started all those awful thoughts of “which home would we put her in, how would we tell her and how would she take it?” etc etc, it seemed a good solution all round. Nellie has now had a rest for a week in the garden but will still be taking us for many a trip here in the South. Phew... Like a lot of us older ladies, there is life in her yet! (Especially now she has Mighty Rex to share the garden with...)
Nellie with Mighty Rex in the gardem At the other end of the scale, something else we parents and grandparents worry about is how to keep the children off the computer for at least some of the time each day. Let’s face it we never had computers in our day and Nellie remembers many a good afternoon running around in the garden playing hide and seek, making a den with old blankets, climbing trees and otherwise being a nuisance to the neighbours with footballs landing in hedges and tennis balls banging continuously against garage doors. It doesn’t seem to happen like that these days. No, we have computers. In fact I often answer a question Hayden seems to ask only to find it isn’t me he is talking to at all, but is busily chatting away to his friends on Skype! Oh it is so different. Nellie worries about this but manages somehow to get Hayden out of the house. Hayden loves swimming and has been a member of “Swim Bournemouth” for a couple of years now. Nellie loves to take him to his sessions, up to 5 times a week in fact, and watch him glide through the water like a seal. Recently a friend from the club suggested Hayden try and get into

23 23 the Surf Life Saving Club at Branksome. Not to miss an opportunity, Nellie excitedly sold the idea to Hayden who was more than happy to give it a go. After all they swim in the sea in the summer! Well last week Nellie took us to our first Surf Life Saving Competitions. How exciting! It is all very new to us so we went along not knowing what to expect and told Hayden, who has had all of 4 lessons now, to do his best and enjoy himself. We absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was invigorating. We shouted so much and cheered with all our might that Nellie couldn’t toot her horn the next day, she was so hoarse. One race was so close and Hayden and his partner won! The aim was for the rescuer to paddle on a board to the ‘patient’, 25 metres away at the other end of the pool, and get the patient aboard so both could return as quickly as possible. Balancing on the board is a skill in itself, so paddling at full speed in unison with your partner takes some doing. Like all good Mums I have it on video… and am deafened by my own voice. (No change there then.) Another race involved the mannequins which for the ‘nippers’ ie the younger ones, were only half filled with water, so they are not so heavy. Heads in the water causing your poor patient to drown are disqualified which is probably just as well.

The mannequin race in the pool If Nellie was ever to fall in the water she would want to be able to breath. All good fun but such a great skill to have. The young teenagers who have been doing this for some time, are fully responsible for the younger ones and become their coaches so you can imagine the rapport between them all. Such great team work. It is so good to watch them all working together. One of the most difficult parts of the whole competition was the rope throwing one. Pulling in the rope so that it does not knot, throwing it with skill so it doesn’t coil back on itself or not quite reach your patient is really quite difficult. Observing the experienced adults do this, as opposed to the young nippers, there was no comparison. It was clear that this was a skill acquired with lots of practice! So Nellie has succeeded in getting Hayden even more out of the house and off his computer. She is very proud of herself. Hayden is learning a new skill and we are really pleased. Enjoyment all round and a win - win situation. Well done Nellie! On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!
Jobs for March :-
• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will
help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

LEWIS Cheap Trains, Drains & Automobiles Some folks drive a lot for various reasons be it business or personal, here a few tip to help cut the cost of travel. • Free tank of fuel via extreme couponing trick. If you’re planning a big spend at any one of 50+ retailers (including House of Fraser, Homebase and PC World), buy the gift card in Morrisons and you get 1p/litre off fuel per £10 spend. So £100 gets 10p off and £1,000ish gets a free tank. The real trick isn’t to use them as gifts, but that if you’re planning a big purchase in that store anyway, first pop into Morrisons and buy the gift card. Then a few days later, once it’s active, go and use it to buy your planned purchase, giving you a potentially whopping petrol discount. There’s a full list of retailers and more info at: www.morrisonsfuelsaver.co.uk. • Turn your heating down, but not off if you’re going away If it gets cold, no heating risks burst pipes. So much so that some insurers won’t cover you for damage if your home’s unoccupied for more than five days and you turned the heating off. The rule of thumb is keep it to a minimum 14 degrees. • Buying two tickets for one train journey can save you £100s Split ticketing makes about as much sense as Chewbacca, but it works. It’s where you buy tickets for a journey’s constituent parts separately to slash the price. It’s allowed by the conditions of carriage – the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you buy tickets for. For example, a single from Manchester to Cornwall costs £158, but the train stops at Cheltenham Spa. Buy a £52 ticket from Manchester to Cheltenham Spa, then a £58 one from there to Cornwall and the total’s £110. That’s the same train, the same time – possibly even the same seat. As Justine tweeted me: “Genius - tickety split has just saved me £50, no effort, exact same journey.” • Cheap boiler cover - you don’t need to stick with your energy firm Boiler cover is a free market, yet energy firms like you to think you need to stick with them. You don’t. While British Gas charges £12/month, you may be able to get similar cover for as little as £6. My quick tips: a) Renters usually don’t need it, as their landlord’s likely responsible. Check.
b) Ensure you know what cover you need. Choose between boiler-only, the cheaper option that covers your boiler and its controls, or central heating cover, which includes full central heating cover on top (including radiators, pipes, etc). c) To find the cheapest, compare prices via uSwitch.com and add in Energyhelpline.com if you’ve time. • Get a year’s breakdown cover for £17. If your car has had trouble during the winter season, it can be costly to pay it back in the Spring. Thankfully, if you know what you’re doing you can get super cheap cover. There are four things you need to know: - If you’re renewing, haggle. 84% of AA and 76% of RAC customer who tried reported success. - If you’re new then for basic cover use a cashback site. A standard RAC policy is £28 online and an AA policy £35, but sites like Topcashback.co.uk and Quidco.com give around £10-£15 back so the effective cost to you is £18ish. This usually works, though do note the cashback isn’t 100% guaranteed. - If you have Tesco clubcard points you can swap them in for RAC cover, so £16 of vouchers gives you basic breakdown. - For full service, Autoaidbreakdown.co.uk is a pay and reclaim polcy for £42/year, which covers you and your spouse for home start, breakdown and onward travel. A local delivery firm is sent out, and you pay then send in receipts to get the cost back. • Do you know where your stopcock is? No nudge nudge wink wink needed. Everyone should know where their stopcock – mains water tap – is. Frozen pipe bursts create an average £4,000 of damage, made worse if you can’t find the off switch as your home floods. Petrol prices are now under £1/litre in some places, but the range is huge. Use Petrolprices.com to find your cheapest, nearest forecourt. The difference even within one post code is 10%.
