Dear Christchurch! With the better weather we have had recently I am certainly hopeful that this summer we are encouraged to get out and enjoy our local countryside and places of interest, rather than looking to get on a plane to get away from it all! One of our recent acquisitions has been a converted campervan, which not only enables the transportation of the magazines each month, but also gives us an excuse to get out and explore the local area. We will be making regular feature out of this and hope to share some of our adventures with you to give an idea of places that you might like to try yourselves. See our latest exploits on page 14. Cllr John Lofts sworn in as Mayor of Christchurch Honorary Freeman Cllr John Lofts has been sworn in as Mayor of Christchurch at the annual meeting of Christchurch Borough Council. Cllr Lofts serves the Highcliffe ward and was elected to the Borough Council in 1987 and to Dorset County Council in 1989, remaining as a Dorset County Councillor for 20 years. He served on the Police Authority for 13 years, 10 years as Vice-Chairman, and on the Dorset Pension Fund for 19 years, 10 years as Chairman where he is still a Member representing the Dorset Districts and Boroughs. He has also served as a Governor of both the Highcliffe Schools and their predecessors for more than 20 years. He was previously Mayor of Christchurch in 1998/99 and three years ago he was appointed as an Honorary Freeman of the Borough. He was born in Dartford, Kent in 1931 and joined the I.T.N.T. College, HMS Worcester in 1945 in order to go to sea as a career, which he did in 1948. He obtained his Masters F. G. Certificate in 1957 and then worked for the Post Office (later
becoming BT) in the Submarine Cable business, retiring in 1985 as Marine Superintendent. He then joined Fujitsu of Japan as a Consultant until 2006. John, his wife Muriel, and son Alan, moved to Highcliffe in 1976. Muriel passed away four years ago, but he still lives in Highcliffe. His Mayoress for his mayoral year will be Mrs Margaret Wooley. His nominated charities are the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Autism Wessex and Christchurch Priory Capital Development Fund. Cllr Denise Jones was elected to serve as Deputy Mayor.

The Peggy Wood Art Group’s Autumn Exhibition 3rd-30th September 2013 The Peggy Wood Art Group has been in existence for around thirty five years. The founding members started painting with Ted Jones, a well-known local artist and teacher. Members choose their own subjects to paint at Christchurch Rowing Club where we meet. As well as enjoying wonderful views, members gain mutual support, fun and inspiration from each other. Several members have had paintings accepted in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. A first……we were the first club to start selling art at the Band Stand

From Ward to Board Paula Shobbrook is Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals and will carry out this role in the new merged organisation, if approved. Here Paula talks about how essential ward to Board reporting is to ensure quality of care for patients. “My job is focused on providing the highest quality of patient care,” explains Paula. “Quite simply, we are judged by what happens at the bedside.” And for Paula this means regularly getting back into her uniform and going out onto the wards. As Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Paula sits on the hospital’s Board and having firsthand knowledge is crucial: “If we’re going to sit in a board meeting, making major decisions about patient care or what is happening in the hospital, this ‘ward to board’ connection is vitally important.” Her interest in patient care started when she volunteered for the Red Cross as a youngster, and a colleague at the charity suggested she took up nursing as a career. Since then, she has built up a wealth of knowledge from working in various positions in the NHS. Paula has an important role in leading the new organisation and retaining that connection with nurses at ward level. “I’m at the centre of making decisions about issues that matter, but
it also allows me to keep in touch with life on the wards. This connection will be vital if the merger b e t we e n t h e two foundation trusts is approved. Continuing to provide quality Paula Shobbrook services locally is the driver behind merger. While the two organisations already provide excellent services, we want to retain that and together we can be even better.” Patient feedback is important in helping any hospital provide high quality of care. “We carefully review feedback and if there are areas we need to improve we make sure we put it right. The merger is about ensuring we can continue to provide quality of care but also to improve and meet new standards. “We need to be able to adapt and change so that we can provide the best care and services possible, and the proposed merger is another step towards meeting the challenges of the modern world. “We already wor k very closely across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch hospitals with many services complementing each other. We will still have the same three hospitals, but the merger will allow us to address some of the challenges currently facing the NHS. “For me, the most exciting part will be the chance to share and develop best practices from both trusts to continue to improve our services.”

The Adventures of Nellie
The Dorset Publications Camper Van We recently invested in a dual purpose camper van. One that can not only carry all the thousands of magazines we produce each month, to our very own valuable 70 or so distributors, but one that also has a fridge, cooker, cupboards and (a very modest…) ‘upstairs bedroom’ for Hayden, as well as a ‘cozy’ bed for Stephen and I. Nellie, the black camper van, has quite an imposing character with long black skirts, silver wing mirrors and large silver grills at the front. If you ever see her when you are out and about, please give her a wave as she is rather fond of that! She got her name from the combined words, Nissan and Elgrand which is her make. You can see her in true style below! We have designed these articles as a little fun to show you where Nellie gets to and maybe give you some ideas of where to go… in the Dorset area. For those of you well travelled and seasoned camper van drivers, you will already have experienced the joy of getting outdoors and away from it all. For us this is new and I have to say I love it. At a recent Caravan and Campers
The Thimble Inn, Piddlehinton Show we bought a years membership to Brit Stops, which is ideal if you are only wanting to stay somewhere for the night or you are on your way to somewhere much further away like Scotland or Northern Wales, or even aborad, and want to stop off on route. Once you have your membership, which is a small £25 for the year, it is FREE to stay at the designated areas. You just need to call and make sure there is a space for you that night. These are usually pubs, farms and local, off the track places that don’t always have a lot of facilities and are certainly not the usual camp sites or tourist hot spots. Quiet, off the road and a good meal can easily be enjoyed without the worry of not having a drink due to driving back home again. Our first Brit Stop day and night was spent in the village of Piddlehinton at The Thimble Inn. It is a thatched roof picture postcard pub situated in a beautiful village in typical South Dorset rolling countryside. The food was really good and all three of us
15 feasted ourselves well! There is even a well INSIDE the pub. A gorgeous little babbling brook surrounds the pub and in summer it would be ideal to sit outside. A pub that Stephen and I would happily recommend. We have a games cupboard in Nellie, one at the ready for any time we want to stop and have a ‘friendly’ competition as a family. We get quite competitive at times and both Hayden and Stephen are not very good losers. Maybe it is a man thing! It is a great way to get Hayden off his computer games and interact with us. It can take quite some doing as many parents of young boys and girls may know. This seems to work for us…at the moment. The now old fashioned, real cards come out, we have bingo and dice games and all are really enjoyed in a relaxed, away from the phones, off the beaten track atmosphere. As I said - I love it! We settled down for the night with Hayden in his ‘upstairs bedroom’. Once we pulled our bed out we realised we couldn’t open the fridge to get the milk out! We are still learning as you can see… Then Hayden got too cold and by 3am he was ‘downstairs’ with us, lying on the front seat which conveniently turns into the van when we are stationary. A cozy, warmer night was had by all!

The next day we woke up to birds singing and the sun just about shining, well behind some greyish looking clouds anyway. We used the facilities in the pub and then set off for Cerne Abbas. I have lived in Dorset for over 16 years and have never visited Cerne before! Shocking but true. It is surprising what we have on our doorstep that we just don’t make the effort to go out and see. We took a wrong turning at one point and finished up on a dirt track to a local farm. Oh Oh Nellie was not at all impressed with that! But that is the fun of having a lazy day out and discovering the English countryside. The giant was there in all his glory as you can see here… We did have an article on this giant in a previous issue, so I hope you were able to read it? We then went down into the local village of Cerne Abbas and had a lovely English coffee shop lunch at Abbots. We were able to amble on home in a very happy Nellie. Hayden got back onto his computer games and we got back to work, all the happier for having spent some time together as a family and seeing some of beautiful Dorset. Where will Nellie go next? Are you buying a property? What does your solicitor do for their money? Most people don’t know what a solicitor does during the process and yet everyone needs one to buy a property. Hopefully the following information will show you how a solicitor is involved and how they help. Buying or selling a home is a complex business and there are legal and administrative procedures that need to be followed. The exact order of events varies slightly, but there are three main stages of the process for the buyer. STAGE ONE 1. Your solicitor contacts the seller’s solicitor. 2. Your solicitor receives and negotiates the draft contract. 3. Your solicitor makes pre-contract enquiries and institutes the searches. 4. Your solicitor advises you on the contract, the searches, the results of their enquiries and on any mortgage conditions relating to the property. You should receive a property information form or a copy of the draft contract to check and the deposit should be made available. STAGE TWO 1. Contracts are exchanged. You hand over a deposit which is non-refundable if you pull out of the sale. 2. Your solicitor draws up a transfer document and sends it to the seller’s solicitor. 3. Your solicitor arranges finalisation and signing of your mortgage documents 4. Your solicitor carries out final searches and enquiries.
Stage 1: Before the Exchange of Contracts The draft contract is received and negotiated, enquiries are made and the formal mortgage offer is received. Stage 2: Exchange of Contracts The contract is signed and you hand over a deposit. Final accounts are prepared and the mortgage deed requested for you to sign. Final searches are made. You are now committed to the purchase/sale. Stage 3: Completion You obtain the keys to your new home and receive the title deeds. Stamp duty is paid and the transfer is arranged at the Land Registry. STAGE THREE 1. You pay the Stamp Duty, Land Registry fees, Solicitors fees and disbursements. 2. You pay the seller the balance of the purchase price through your solicitors. 3. You move in! 4. Your Solicitor receives the transfer document and the title deeds. 5. Solicitor carries out final administration. Involved Patients, Excellent Care The first ever National Patient Participation Week was 1st – 8th June 2013 with the aim of highlighting the importance of patient participation to achieve excellence in care for all patients. NAPP the National Association for Patient Participation is a national charity, formed in 1978 and uniquely placed as the only umbrella body for patient-led groups in primary care. At a time when the NHS in England is undergoing significant change and the new Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) replacing Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), it is our chance as patients to ensure OUR VOICE is heard within these groups to influence decision making about our health. To do this, your Patient Participation Group (PPG) wants to hear from YOU, our fellow patients. We need to know what concerns you have, and how you would like to change things for the future. Our group was formed in 1993 and since then has continuously worked with the Practice to strengthen the relationship with its patients to improve the provision of healthcare. We now have to make sure our priorities are forwarded to the CCG for their consideration and action. We all need to rise to the challenge of making our views known through the PPG, the more patients that do this the more they will LISTEN. The Mudeford Ferry Eric Montague chats with Paul Derham Following the interest in my music video ‘Mudeford Mood’ starring Alan and Charlie Rose from ‘State of Undress’, I thought that this month I would write about the ferry boats at our picturesque fishing port of Mudeford Quay. So I went down to the Quay and talked with ferryman Paul Derham on board Josephine 2, the latest addition to his fleet.
It’s a long way from Mudeford Quay to the Sandbanks via Hengisbury Head. A ferry across the ‘Run’ has offered a quick alternative since the earliest of times. Some say there was a ferry back in the days of the Doomsday Book. Up until the 1960s, the ferry was a rowing boat. Paul explained that the decision to switch to a larger motorised boat was mainly because the ferry doubled as a salmon punt and there wasn’t much freeboard - distance between the water level when loaded and the point where water could flood in. Paul told me, “The rowing ferry was literally the shortest crossing the fishermen could do. They had to overcome the strong tide in the Run and sometimes you landed a long way from where you thought you were going to land. I was brought up in Mudeford and my father was a fisherman, as was his father, family going back at least 300 years. But I wasn’t allowed to be a fisherman, I had to get a trade or a profession. I saw an advert for P&O saying ‘see the world and get paid for it.’ It seemed like a good idea, so I started a four year cadetship with P&O and ended up as a navigation officer on the old Canberra.” Paul bought the existing ferry service 10 years ago - the ‘Ferry Dame’ a single hull which takes 48 passengers. The twin hull ‘Josephine’ was added and she carries 86. The service employs 3 skippers and 7 or 8
youngsters, aged from 16. Paul continued “We then converted my father’s old fishing boat into a 12 seater Dory as a reserve ferry. In 2006 we started the fast boat ride trip which we named Adventure Voyages.” This takes thrill seekers in a 9 metre rigid inflatable as far as the Old Harry Rocks, and at speed! More sedate outings are run to events such as the Bournemouth Air Festival and the boats are available for charter for as little as one hour. Jumpers House and its Lodge With the sad news that the owners of the Crooked Beam restaurant have put in a proposal to demolish the building and build flats on the site, I thought it would be a good time to look at its history. The interesting part to us is the lower part of the restaurant (as can be seen from the photograph dated to around the 1920’s), as the rest is post war. It is here that I have to unfortunately destroy a well known local tale; there is absolutely no connection to Dr Crippen at all! Sorry. The story seems to have originated in the 1940’s with the discovery of a woman’s body in the property. Although she did bear a similarity to Ethel Le Neve it has been thoroughly disproved (also Le Neve died in 1967). The actual history of the building is quite hard to trace as it is overshadowed by the history of Jumpers House, of which it was a part. Using map evidence, John Speeds map of the late seventeenth century does show a small building to one side of the house in approximately the right position, but as it is only a rough, hand drawn map it is hard to be sure. More definite are the ordnance survey maps of the nineteenth century. The first, from 1849, clearly shows the building with the name ‘Lodge’ next to it. A clue to its being a part of Jumpers House can be seen in a fascinating advertisement in the Christchurch Times dated 31st January 1880. it reads; ‘Jumpers House, Christchurch. Mr James B. Jenkins begs to give notice that he will... offer for sale...about 60 sticks consisting of fir, ash, and elm, and a quantity of
wood faggots...the lots to be viewed on application to Mr Sansom, at Jumpers Lodge...’. Because of Mr Sansom, this leads to the census of 1841 when a Thomas Hammerton aged 53 lived there with his wife and 2 year old son. More clear is 1861 when a 61 year old Joseph Kelly lived there with his wife. What is interesting is that their 17 year old son is recorded as being at Jumpers House as a servant to Jane West, owner of the entire Jumpers Estate. Together with Mr Sansom they are listed as agricultural labourers or gardners so it seems likely that they worked on land belonging to Jumpers House. So although there is not a great deal of documented history about Jumpers Lodge, we can be find enough to show that possible demolition would lead to the loss of the last link to the splendid and historic Jumpers House. Christchurch Central Members enjoyed a very busy May meeting. Dates for the Coach and lunch trip to Weymouth on the 20th June were finalised. A Garden Party is to take place in the Gardens of the Red House Museum on Tuesday July 16th. With a Competition for the Best Hat. Fingers are crossed for a fine Day!!!!! Sunday 28th April was a lovely day and several Members did a sponsored Walk from the Mayors Parlour, along The Convent Walk to The Captains Club Hotel. Monies raised goes to the charity A.C.W.W. (Associated Women of the World). Coffee rounded off a very pleasant morning. The 2013 Resolution for this years National. AGM is ‘The Decline of the High Street’, it has full support from Christchurch Central Members.
It was also decided to take part again this year in the Annual County Quiz in October. Finally Mr Jim Leigh, a Registered Podiatrist with a practise in Christchurch gave a very amusing and informative talk on. Foot Care. Mr Leigh made a serious and potentially dull subject highly entertaining. A vote of Thanks was given by June Tranter. Dates for Coffee and Lunch were given out and the meeting was then closed. The Institute meets on the first Wednesday of the Month in the Baptist Church Hall, Bargates, from 10 - 12noon. Next months talk is by a local Florist.
