Three Seaside Awards for Christchurch beaches Three beaches in Christchurch have again gained Seaside Awards for achieving the highest standards of beach management. Avon Beach, Friars Cliff Beach and Highcliffe Beach are the winners of the Awards, which are judged and presented by the charity Keep Britain Tidy. The Award recognises and rewards beaches in England that achieve the highest standards of beach management and, in the case of bathing beaches, meet guideline water quality.
Cllr Margaret Phipps, Porfolio Holder for the Environment at Christchurch Council, said: “We’re delighted that our beaches have maintained the required standard for this award again. We know that our residents, holidaymakers and day trippers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of the Seaside Award flying gives them the reassurance that they will.”

The local fundraising group for Marie Curie are holding their first Blooming Great Tea Party on 2nd August at the Red House Museum from 11.00am til 3.00pm. There will be Tea, Coffee and Cake as well as a Raffle. All the funds raised will go towards the Marie Curie Nurses in the local area, who offer free hands-on care to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses in the comfort of their own home. Could 2015 see the rise of ‘Buy to Let’ pensioners? With the recent unlocking of rules on how people can access their savings in retirement, could a new breed of ‘buy to let pensioners’ be ready to enter the local property market? Nationwide property lettings specialist, Belvoir, is advising caution in the wake of the Budget announcement that savers will be allowed to withdraw their entire pension fund from the age of 55 or over, rather than take the money slowly as an annuity.

“Since the last Budget many financial commentators have speculated that following the new rules – due to come into effect from April 2015 – pension savers could draw down some or all of their money to invest in options such as buy to let property,” says Jeremy Clarke who owns the Belvoir office in Christchurch. “With recent surveys reporting that buy to let has outperformed all other mainstream investments over the past 18 years, this could be an extremely attractive option for anyone wanting to safeguard their capital and maximise their income in retirement. Whilst this may be true, we believe that anyone considering their first move into the sector should take expert advice. Buy to let continues to offer great opportunities, but potential investors must have a clear strategy, and it should never be considered as a ‘get rich quick’ scheme.” This year marks the 18th anniversary of the buy to let mortgage initiative launched by the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA). Tracker studies indicate that since its introduction, buy to let investment has provided an average return of 16.3 per cent – considerably more than most other asset classes. Over a third of Britain’s 1.4 million private landlords already view their buy to let portfolio as the main component within their pension plan – with the relative ‘safety’ of bricks and mortar investment coupled with regular rental returns as income, making it an attractive investment choice. Dorian Gonsalves, Commercial Director for Belvoir, comments: “The recent pension reforms have ignited a great deal of interest in buy to let as a viable & attractive alternative to more traditional pension plans. Market demand for quality, well maintained, private rental property remains high and even before the recent Budget announcement our offices throughout the UK were experiencing a growing number of enquiries from people seeking advice and guidance on how to enter this sector for the first time.” Some industry commentators are predicting returns of around 11 per cent per year over the next decade and a number of specialist, buy to let lenders have also started to reconsider current age restrictions to allow people up to age 70 to apply for long term buy to let mortgages – subject to them meeting certain criteria. Jeremy Clarke adds: “With all the excitement generated by the new reforms we would recommend that anyone looking to use pension savings to fund a buy to let investment should – as a first step - take professional financial advice and then sit down with a property lettings specialist, such as Belvoir, to map out a strategy for their future goals. “It is important for first time investors to buy property at the right price, in the right location and to identify the type of accommodation that people will want to rent from them both now and in the future. “With our local knowledge we can look in detail at potential property yields - taking into account all outgoings, such as maintenance costs - and provide novice investors with a realistic expectation on returns. “There are many legislative and other issues to take into account but all Belvoir local offices are staffed by experienced, highly trained specialists who can advise on all aspects of property investment and management. “We are happy to offer a free initial – no obligation – consultation to anyone wanting to learn more about how to become a successful property investor. How you can help us improve our hospitals This is the year of change for our hospitals. We are focused on making improvements and delivering excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere - and you can help us. One of our key values is communication; this means taking time to listen and learn from our patients, visitors and our staff and making improvements. Here are just two examples of changes we have made:
Elderly short stay ward Ward 22 is now a short-stay ward for elderly patients. Designated social workers, discharge planning workers and experienced therapists have joined the nursing and medical staff on the ward and are enabling patients to get home sooner. Staff nurse and discharge planner, Victoria Coe, says: “It is great to see patients going home more quickly which makes them happy, and means we can spend more time with them when they are here.”
Same day emergency treatment Not all patients attending hospital as an emergency need to be admitted. We have expanded our Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) services so that patients referred by their GP, or seen in the Emergency Department, can receive same day care with follow up if necessary. We can also support early discharge by reviewing patients in AEC. Lead nurse Sonia Mahmoud, says: “Our patients are leaving happy in the knowledge that all their assessment needs have been met within a safe and friendly environment.”
Your feedback Your feedback is very important to us. It helps us know where we need to improve and we have a number of different ways of asking our patients for their views. The Patients Association is supporting us with a Care Campaign Audit. Patients are asked about their care while they are here and any areas for improvement are immediately fed back to the ward so any concerns can be acted on quickly. Here are just some of the changes we have made recently following patient comments: You said: “It would be nice to have the same nurse treating me.” We did: Implemented bay-based nursing where a nurse is assigned to a bay and is accountable for that bay.

You said: “Visiting time is too short to visit patients and talk to staff about patient care.” We did: We have lengthened visiting times to improve access to staff. Patients who require assistance with eating meals during their hospital stay are also able to turn to their families and carers for assistance, with support from hospital staff. You said: “Pharmacy was very slow and took three hours to dispense medication on day of discharge.” We did: A new pharmacy tracker screen to track prescriptions has been installed. Two new healthcare assistants now assist with medication sign-off and ward staff are working more closely with Pharmacy to anticipate when a patient may be discharged.
Learning from complaints We know things don’t go right all of the time, but we can learn a lot from your feedback when care doesn’t live up to the high standards we aspire to. Delivering high quality care includes dealing with complaints in a positive, open and understanding way. We have reviewed our complaints policy and are now even more focused on understanding the issues to be addressed. We are responding more quickly and meeting with those who have raised concerns so they are fully involved in the process. These are your hospitals and you can help us shape the way we deliver care. We want to provide a quality service that meets your needs so we will continue to listen and deliver excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere.

Bee wildlife friendly This summer, make your garden bee friendly. Bees are fundamental to the ecosystem, the food chain and our health; they enable the plants around us to grow by pollinating their flowers. The foods we eat – fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds – depend upon this process, as do many animals and birds. There are over 250 species of bees in Britain, including the bumblebee, the solitary bee and the honeybee. Solitary bees live alone, but bumblebees and honeybees live in large colonies which can contain up to 50,000 bees. Most of the bees in these colonies work by gathering pollen, which they bring back to the hive on their back legs. This pollen is transformed into honey. An individual worker bee can visit 14,000 flowers a day. Pollen is transferred between from the anther (the male part) of one flower to the stigma (the female part) of another. When a bee finds a good source of food, it dances in a figure of eight pattern. The angle of this dance in

relation to the sun tells other bees where the food source is. Other bees in the colony will then fly to the plant to collect pollen and nectar. Unfortunately, factors such as modern farming practices have made life harder for bees to find natural habitats, and this has led to a steep decline in their numbers. Beekeepers work to protect the bee population by maintaining their own colonies, some of which are used to provide pollination services to farmers, but more help is needed. If you want to help conserve the bee population, fill your garden with beefriendly flowers. These flowers are rich in pollen and nectar. Recommended plants include foxgloves, Californian poppies and geraniums, but you should fill your garden with a wide variety so that at least two flowers are in bloom each season. Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. We are buying a property in an area which we know well having lived here for 30 years! Do we really need to have searches done on the property we’re buying?

The answer is invariably yes! For residential properties a lender will often require particular searches to be carried out. Even where there is no lender, HGW still recommends, at least, the Local Authority, Water & Drainage and Environmental searches.
Drainage and Water searches show whether the property is connected to mains water and sewage and the location of any pipes and public sewers. This could be very important if you are planning any modifications to the property in the future.
The Local Authority search provides answers to an extensive set of enquiries relating to the general area and the property itself, including any planning history. It can uncover various issues, for example, whether the property may soon have a dual carriageway running through the end of the garden! However, the search will only cover certain Alan Fairley matters and only provides a Conveyancing Solicitor snapshot of the property at that
The Environmental search reveals the environmental history of the area within 500 metres of the property. It reveals flooding history, land contamination, telephone masts etc.
My mother has recently died and her estate is worth £500,000, will I need to pay Inheritance Tax? The current threshold for Inheritance Tax (IHT) is £325,000. This is known as the nil rate band. Where an estate exceeds this amount and the beneficiary of the estate is non-exempt from IHT, then IHT will be payable on the excess at 40%. As a child of the deceased you are considered to be non-exempt and therefore the amount of IHT payable could be as much as £70,000 (being 40% of £175,000). However, if your mother was a widow and she had inherited her late husband’s estate then the Executor of your mother’s estate could claim his unused nil rate band. In this instance the amount to be claimed could be as much as £325,000,

Conducting searches before you buy can prevent a lot of headaches with the property later on. which would give your late mother’s estate up to £650,000 to pass free of IHT. If this is the amount that can be claimed then no IHT would be payable. However, there are factors which must be taken into account in calculating how much of your mother’s late husband’s nil rate band is available to claim, including, but not limited to, whether he made any gifts during the 7 year period before his death. Your solicitor will be able to assist you with this and with the preparation of the relevant Inheritance tax forms required Rebecca Suthers Wills & Probate Lawyer by HMRC to make this claim.

Wanted – wildlife volunteers The Rangers at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest are looking for volunteers to help record the vast array of plants and animals in the 800-acre Park.
The Park already benefits from regular surveys of its butterfly, dragonfly and damselfly populations, and keeps an ongoing record of bird sightings. Now, with the help of additional experts, the Rangers are hoping to broaden their knowledge of the Park’s many other inhabitants. “We are organising a 24-hour Bioblitz at Moors Valley on 24 July and would love to bring some new volunteers on board to help discover and record particular species”, said Countryside Education Ranger, Katie Davies. “We are hoping lots of members of the public will also want to join in, but obviously they will need guidance, so knowledgeable experts will be welcome. “We are also keen to increase the scope of our regular surveys, so we would also welcome support from volunteers who can’t make the Bioblitz but would be keen to get involved with regular survey work.”

Stanpit Marsh Bioblitz discovers nearly 500 species
The Bioblitz held over 24 hours at Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve in Christchurch has recorded 492 species of flora and fauna. The event was organised by Christchurch Council’s Countryside Service in collaboration with the Friends of Stanpit Marsh, Christchurch Harbour Ornithological Group, RSPB, Dorset Bat Group, Christchurch History Society, Christchurch Monday Camera Club and numerous naturalists and experts. The aim of the Bioblitz was to provide up-to-date records of the wildlife on the marsh which can be used to inform the management of nature reserves, ensuring the effective protection and safeguarding of habitats and wildlife for the future. It was also a way of involving local people and making them more aware of the types of flora and fauna in their locality. 250 people joined the Bioblitz to help with the recording process. Peter Holloway, Senior Countryside Warden, said: “This was a really successful event. Last year’s Bioblitz recorded 400 species, so we recorded a lot more this year. In fact, ten per cent of the species recorded had never been found on the marsh before and, as far as we know, 26 of these species are new records for the whole borough.”
New species recorded range from a barnacle goose to a water-mite and include a number of species of beetle. The Bioblitz included a wildlife photography walk, birds and plant identification, pond and stream dipping, minibeast hunts, spider walks, bat talk and walk and moth and mammal trapping events. There were stalls and information displays about wildlife in the MarshPod information centre and a pop-up café to provide refreshments. On the reserve wildlife hubs were set up under canvas to provide base stations for experts to record the species and for people to participate in workshops and to look at their finds. Small mammal traps were placed on the reserve overnight whilst people searched for bats and set up light traps to record moths. A dawn chorus and breakfast went down well for early risers on the Sunday morning. The final event saw the grand opening of the previous night’s moth and small mammal traps and the downloading of footage from a trail camera set to monitor wildlife movement after dark. An ‘Anabat’ that had recorded bat echo location calls has suggested a new bat record for the marsh. Peter Holloway added: “I would like to thank everyone who came to help with the recording process. I’m sure everyone enjoyed themselves in what was a very worthwhile exercise.”

Tastes so good... SYRUP AND FRUIT COOKIES

No one can resist the taste and smell of a freshly baked cookie, straight from the oven. These yummy delights have the sweetness of sultanas mixed in and are best enjoyed with a glass of cold milk from the fridge.
Ingredients: 340g self raising flour 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 200g soft margarine 200g Demerara sugar 200g golden syrup 50g sultanans 50g chopped nuts 50g chopped cherries
Equipment: Flat tray, covered with baking parchment Preheat the oven to 190°c or gas mark 4-5 Method: Place margarine, syrup and sugar in a bowl and mix together. Pour in the rest of the ingredients and mix thoroughly to form a dough. Place the dough in the fridge for an hour, for best results place in fridge overnight. When cold divide into 20 balls and press them lightly onto the baking tray. Place in the oven for 10 to 15mins until golden. Leave to cool on a wire rack.

Rambo and pals arrive in the New Forest He’s tough, likes to be boss and has an impressive pair of horns – meet Rambo, one of the new additions to the animals at New Forest Wildlife Park.
Rambo is a mouflon, a type of wild sheep that was probably one of the ancestors of all modern domestic sheep breeds. The dominant male, he has settled in well at New Forest Wildlife Park near Ashurst since being introduced to the park in May and is accompanied by two other males and two females named Martha and Mabel. It’s hoped the mouflon will breed. Mouflon are classified as ‘vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of endangered species, since their numbers in the wild have declined markedly in the last few decades. Often hunted for their horns or meat, they are also under threat due to competition with domestic livestock.
The mouflon have adapted well to life at New Forest Wildlife Park Originally found in counties such as Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Oman, Kashmir, Azerbaijan and Pakistan, they were domesticated by humans around 10,500 years ago and brought to Europe. They can now be found wild in mountainous regions of Europe such as Cyprus, Corsica, Sardinia and parts of Italy. The mouflon’s coat is red-brown in colour with a dark area along its back, lighter side patches and white underparts. Both the males and females can grow horns, but those of the males are more notable, being large, curved and spiral and sometimes reaching around 25 inches in length. In the wild mouflon tend to live in mountainous terrain and on steep rocky

ledges, where they can get away from predators, though they can also be found in grasslands, desert and forest. They graze on short grasses, heather, and shrubs and have a multi-chambered stomach which enables them to regurgitate the tough plants they feed on and chew them a second time to make them softer. “The mouflon have adapted well to life at New Forest Wildlife Park and are proving popular with visitors,” said NFWP owner Carol Heap. “They are quite laid back but also curious creatures. “Mouflon are a declining species in the wild, where they are in danger of being interbred with domestic sheep. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Having had a few trips in Nellie now, staying overnight, we realised that for any longer trips we would need more space. We have spent many hours looking at awnings for campervans! All have their pros and cons and in the end we chose the Kombi Ex. It aligns parallel with the van, so when you come out of Nellie you walk into the living space. Behind that are two bedrooms, so they are out of the way and always there, which during the day can be useful for storing things you are not using so the ‘living room’ is fully available. At the front there is a covered area which means if it is slightly raining you can sit under it and still be outside, and you can leave shoes there which again are protected to some degree from the weather. I couldn’t believe it… After all those hours of looking, choosing and finally deciding, we picked up the phone only to be told, “Oh they have stopped producing those now, so we don’t have any!” If you know me, when I get determined, wild horses will not stop me, so after many phone calls we did indeed find a site which had the Kombi Ex in stock. We

Nellie, suited and booted, with Kombi now have what we wanted! Intention. Here’s a photo of Nellie all suited and booted with her new awning. There are so many local places where we can camp near to where we live. It is excellent as it means we can pick Hayden up from school on a Friday and go away for the weekend, arriving at our destination just 30 minutes, if not less, later! This gives us more time to actually enjoy ourselves, and worry much less about the traffic. Norden Farm is great. It is situated just outside of Corfe Castle. There are lots of fields, really good washing facilities, a lovely camp shop which has recently been renovated and has all you would need for a family camp. There is also a farm house and a restaurant. It is perfect. There are peacocks, farm animals and an amazing fishing pond with, we are told, 25 pound carp in it. It is free to fish for campers. I have to say my Dad would love it here. We did go fishing and Stephen did his best with Hayden, but Grandad was sorely missed and we left with no catch much to Hayden’s chagrin. We picked a fantastic weekend for weather. The sun was shining. The plot we had was just right and gave us lots of space for the
27 27 boys to play. We went along with Martin, a friend of ours and his two boys. Ryan, the eldest friend stayed in the tent with Hayden, whilst Stephen and I had the luxury of Nellie’s bed. Martin was in a tent with Sammy. If you are not used to the delightful sound of birds singing and the countryside sounds of the night, that amazing chorus can turn into an awful, perpetual screech. Unfortunately Martin had this problem and Sammy kept waking up too, so poor Martin did suffer a bit that night. It is a good idea for earplugs… ironically! I love the sounds of the night so didn’t have this problem and the boys in our tent slept very soundly. Saturday was a great day for games. We held our own ‘Norden Olympics’! Actually this was a very clever ploy on my part to sit along the side line and referee, basically giving orders, so that I didn’t have to run around! It must be the teacher in me… I had bought a few outdoor games especially for the occasion. It is surprising these days what you can get, for good value. Hours of fun at very little cost really. We had two teams and the boys ran around all afternoon. I wonder if this is why they ALL slept really well that night? We had a delicious meal at the farmhouse in the evening. Five hungry boys after all that exercise but I am not sure what my excuse was… There is a good variety of food, it is

The newly refurbished farm shop really well presented and the whole place is very family orientated. Having said that it would also be a lovely place to have a romantic meal for two. Very cosy. There are comfortable settees set in a snug immediately behind the restaurant where you can enjoy an aperitif or an after meal drink. Norden House is also a great location for weddings and parties. It is totally out of the way, so you can party into the wee small hours of the morning. A marquee or two can be erected in the countryside garden and photos would be idyllic. Just call and ask Matthew for details. He will be more than happy to show you around the gardens, the restaurant and the lovely guest house where you can stay. So Nellie was more than happy with her stay at Norden Farm and I know we will definitely visit again. We highly recommend the campsite, the farm shop with its local produce, the restaurant and the guest house. The owners should be very proud. They have grown from strength to strength. a resounding success
Priory Music Festival Christchurch Priory’s first week-long music and arts festival was a great success. The most amazing pictures and sculptures were produced by the local schools, and the Priory Flower Team produced wonderful music-themed floral displays, so that the ancient church was a riot of colour very much admired by the many visitors throughout the week.
Every event was very well attended, with the Priory packed for many of the concerts. Somehow, 70 people squeezed into the tiny Mission Church of St John’s Purewell for Stephanie Liney’s Celtic harp recital, and the Alani String Quartet’s concert at St George’s Jumpers drew almost a full house. All ages were catered for, with two music workshops for the local schoolchildren, one featuring organ and piano led by the Scott Brothers on Monday morning and one specifically for samba and percussion held on Friday morning and led by Simone Rebello and Cormac Byrne of BackBeat. What an experience for children and teachers alike. High praise must go to the catering team at the Cloisters Café who worked tirelessly to feed and water the visitors and the performers alike. Everyone said that the food and warmth of service was first-rate: quite an

accolade for a facility which has been open for just a few weeks.
Of course not everything went exactly to plan, and for future events a few improvements will be made. What is clear is that the Festival Team achieved its aim and brought in visitors from near and far to listen to wonderful music and savour the very special atmosphere of the Priory. The performers too were all affected by the tranquillity of the building and really enjoyed the experience of performing there.
Financially, the final figures won’t be available for a couple of weeks, but there is little doubt that the costs were covered and there may even be a small surplus. And so the next Christchurch Priory Music and Arts Festival will take place in June 2016. Make sure you reserve your seats early!

It’s not yet time to hoot the horn in celebration, but things are looking a tad better for drivers. There was no Budget petrol tax rise, and a supermarket price war sees costs now at an average £1.29/litre – that's 13p less than the peak, while insurance prices have come off their peak too. Yet if the Stig's helmet had eyes, even they'd probably still water about the fact that car running costs alone are an average £3,500/year. So I want to help you rev up your motoring savings. Note the free website PetrolPrices.com lists the day’s cheapest petrol stations in your area for unleaded, diesel, LPG and other fuels. Hidden council MOT centres can mean fewer fails. 40% of MOTs fail first time, often for trivialities such as bust light bulbs or poor windscreen wipers. So always do a quick walk-around and, where possible, fix before. For the test itself, if you've a long-term trusted garage, great. If not, little-known council MOT test centres generally don't do repairs, so have less incentive to fail you. The feedback on these is great, with many saying they get far fewer fails. There’s a full list at www.mse.me/mots Has the PHOTO on your licence expired? You risk a £1,000 fine. While the licence itself may be valid, the photo needs renewing every 10 years. Two million have expired, so check your card's section 4b date and if it’s expired, go to www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence to renew. There's no one cheapest insurer, so the aim's to get as many quotes as possible. Yet different comparison sites cover different insurers, so always check at least two for a wider spread. Then check the ones they miss – including biggies www.aviva.co.uk and www.directline.com .Yet it’s also about understanding the counter-logical ways to save. - Third party's not always cheapest. Even though it’s meatier cover, the mere fact of selecting comprehensive insurance makes some insurers consider you a lower risk, which outweighs the cost for the bigger cover. So if you’re looking for the cheapest, always check both. - Got more than one car? Comparison sites only do single vehicles. Manually check www.admiral.com’s multi-car policy deals and, if time, www.churchill.com and
www.directline.com discounts. Young drivers, try adding parents as second drivers. Strange as it sounds, adding a responsible second driver to your policy can bring costs down. This is because insurance is about risk, so they can bring the average down. It's a case of trial and error with different firms. Yet never put someone as the main driver on the car unless they really are the main driver. Doing this falsely is called fronting; it’s illegal and can invalidate your insurance. Parking tickets from supermarkets, housing estates or any private car park do better impressions than Rory Bremner. If a ticket's unfairly slapped on your windscreen (eg, there were no signs), reply explaining why it's unfair and that you won't pay. It may huff and puff, yet it can't "hit your credit record" or "send bailiffs" without the time and expense of court action. If it's an unfair council ticket, don't just accept it - you have rights. Cut fuel use up to 30% by driving more efficiently. This isn’t about slowing down (though that can help if you’re a boy or girl racer). The real keys are: a) Change gear up earlier to keep revs down. b) Treat the accelerator like a money pump - the harder you press, the more fuel flows. c) Slow naturally rather than ramming the brakes to use up the car’s momentum. If possible, also reduce your vehicle’s weight and drag, then it needs less fuel to travel. So dejunk your trunk many carry unnecessary weight in the boot, correct your tyre pressure and more.

GUIDE Runner Beans
It’s not too late to plant runner beans. My Grandfather always put them in on Whit Sunday, never before, probably because the plants don’t like frost. For the cost of a packet of seeds you’ll get a continuous crop of lovely fresh runners for a month or so, and they freeze really well. Push a bean into a small pot of multi purpose compost and keep it moist. Within a couple of weeks they should start to grow and when you have some sturdy plants with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves they can be planted out in the garden or in deep troughs. If you have a vegetable patch or enough room, construct a wigwam of tall canes (about 6-8 feet) or a
row of crossed canes or even netting for them to grow up. They could even be added to flower beds to give a bit of height as long as they have something to climb up. Next to each cane, dig a hole with a trowel—add some garden compost if you have some or even a layer of newspaper (to hold the moisture) and carefully transplant the bean plants without disturbing the roots too much. Water well and keep them moist in dry spells, especially when the flower buds appear and the pods are beginning to set. Happy harvesting - and don’t forget to leave some pods on the plants to dry out and provide you with a fresh new batch of seeds for next year!

So Much to See and Do in New Forest Show’s Countryside Area You could spend all day in The Countryside Area of the New Forest and Hampshire County Show watching phenomenal displays of falcons, gundogs, terriers and ferret racing. Howard Kirby from Lairns Shooting School will be bringing along his gundogs giving a master class in training and working a dog for field sports. The British Transport Police will also be displaying their incredibly important daily job; using their spaniels and labradors to sniff out hazardous substances and the Police and Crime Commissioner will be talking about the latest initiative for the Prevention
of Countryside Crime. CJ’s falcons, hawks and owls will be flying over your head and the hounds will be paraded round the ring. With this year’s theme of “Hands-On” you and your family will have a chance to get involved and have a go with the range of different activities such as quizzing the huntsmen on their traditional day job and seeing the hounds; Peter Stagg will be discussing his vital job as a Keeper on the Beaulieu Estate and New Park Shooting Academy will showing you and talking about the safe handling of a shot gun. We are delighted to have cooking demonstrations from one of the Country’s Leading Game Chefs, Jose Souto and also, the Fly Fishing School is back by popular demand so book yourself a lesson on casting with the experts! The Show will be held at New Park, Brockenhurst on Tuesday 29th, Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st July. A MODERN VOICE FOR TODAY’S WOMAN
The June meeting of the Christchurch Central W.I. once again was very well attended. As usual the meeting opened with Jerusalem, apologies for absence, and Birthday Posies given out. Notices included a coffee morning at ‘Soho’s’, and later in the month lunch at ‘Pizza Express’. These events give old and new members a chance to meet socially, and are very popular. It was suggested that Members next month each bring a suitable item of food, which will be given to support The Bargates Baptist Church Food Bank After a break for coffee, the award winning florist, Lorraine Hanshaw from ‘Fairmile Florist’ arrived with a huge array of flowers and foliage. After a short introduction, Lorraine explained that she had done her training in London and then eventually opened her shop in Christchurch in 2007. Gathering a collection of flowers she proceeded to make a most elaborate arrangement, from three Alliums, bound together to form a lollipop tree, adding other flowers and leaves at the base, all this done in a matter of minutes and giving a running commentary as she did so. A second stunning display was created with a tall slim glass vase, foliage and Canna Lillies attached to the outside, without any water so therefore only a temporary but certainly very very eye catching The third and final arrangement was a most beautiful hand tied bouquet, wrapped in tissue paper and cellophane, a bow added, popped into a colourful bag, ready for delivery! The whole demonstration was most ably assisted by Jade McCafferty, also a fully qualified florist, Jade demonstrated the art of button hole making and how time consuming they are to make. All sorts of interesting and useful tips were given on the care and buying of flowers. Finally Lorraine donated the three very exciting and beautiful flower arrangements for the Raffle. Three lucky members went home proudly carrying their lovely prizes. The July meeting will be a talk on Textiles by Diana Marx, visitors are very welcome, for further information please call 01202 386813.
