Couple celebrate golden wedding anniversary at Fairmile Grange A devoted couple were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in a special way thanks to Fairmile Grange care home in Christchurch. John who is a resident of Fairmile Grange, married his wife Angela in 1968 and they have been together ever since. To mark this special occasion, a celebration was held which started with the couple going to the Captains Club Hotel with friends and family for lunch. This was then followed by a group of John and Angela’s loved ones visiting Fairmile Grange, to enjoy afternoon tea and a slice of golden wedding cake, which the catering team had specially prepared. Staff of the care home also decorated the lounge with balloons and banners and a local singer was invited to provide entertainment for the evening. Kim Butters, wellbeing manager of Fairmile Grange, said: “It was lovely to be a part of John and Angela’s anniversary. An occasion like this is so important to celebrate, so it was a privilege being able to help make the day extra special.

“One of the highlights of the day was when John stood up to give Angela a celebratory hug. This was such a wonderful moment because for the last few years John has been unable to stand. However John has been working closely with his physiotherapist to ensure he could stand to hug his wife on such an important anniversary. “It is essential our residents continue to live their lives to the full and their partners, family and friends are always welcome to celebrate events like this together. Talking about Wildlife...
Flock to Poole Harbour January is traditionally a dark and dismal month, but for over-wintering birds, this is a busy time of year, and Poole Harbour is one place we can guarantee will be bursting with (bird) life. During late summer and autumn birds start arriving back onto the Brownsea Island lagoon to over-winter. The unique location of the lagoon means it provides shelter and food sources in abundance, but its shallow waters mean it’s also still accessible for birds when the rest of the harbour is under deeper water. It’s also a thoroughfare for birds flying from far flung corners of the globe, who use the lagoon to rest and eat before migrating to other winter habitats. In the past we’ve recorded rare sightings of the semipalmated sandpiper, and in October we were treated to a sighting of the small sanderling visiting from its arctic breeding grounds. A favourite and frequent visitor to the lagoon is the spoonbill. For many years the spoonbill flock sizes have been building, and in 2014 it peaked to the largest flock of spoonbills ever seen in Britain, with 49 birds recorded in one flock. and easily identifiable guests are large flocks of waders, particularly avocets, which are distinguishable by their long blue legs and curved bill, perfect for si�ing through the mud for fish. They breed in east Anglia, France and Germany but the number seen on the Brownsea Lagoon is of international importance, where 1,200 or more can be seen in the winter. The black-tailed godwit breed in Iceland but can be seen through the year on Brownsea Island, with up to 2,500 visiting in the winter to feed on worms found in the lagoon. A unique partnership between Dorset Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust and Birds of Poole Harbour has been set up to run boat trips around Poole Harbour during the winter months, so visitors can get a first-hand experience of the thousands of birds feeding and roosting on the Brownsea Island Lagoon, when the rest of the island is closed for winter. Highcliffe Charity Players present
CINDERELLA at The Regent Centre This January’s eagerly anticipated pantomime by the award-winning Highcliffe Charity Players at Christchurch’s Regent Centre, is the much-loved, rags-to-riches tale of ‘Cinderella’.
Offering classic family panto at its finest, it’s brimming over with sparkling dance routines and show songs, sumptuous sets and costumes, plus the usual quota of outrageous slapstick comedy and audience participation. The plot is familiar – poor Cinderella is cruelly treated by her Wicked Stepmother and Ugly Stepsisters. But through the magic of her Fairy Godmother and a well-fitting glass slipper, she eventually escapes her life of drudgery and wins the heart of her handsome Prince. A brand-new version, full of amusing contemporary touches and topical references, has been specially written for the Company by two of its members - Stephen Hutt and Charles Michael Duke. “We’ve had an absolute ball with this lovely new script,” says panto director, HCP Chairman Georgina Smith, “it’s full of magical fun and laughter.” 23-year-old Charles, who was born with cystic fibrosis and recently had a double lung transplant, has also landed the role of Buttons. “It’s proved a very special part for me,” he says.
“It was my ever first principal role with my old lungs (in 2013) and is now my first principal role with my new ones!” Cinderella is played by Charlotte Starr: “Though I was one of the ‘Babes in the Wood’ when I was 10,” says Charlotte, “taking on my first leading role is proving daunting but exciting.” “Theatre has always been a passion,” says her Prince, Matt Jenkins, “but as I last had a comic role, playing my first royal Prince is quite a contrast!” Enjoying ‘overplaying’ The Ugly Stepsisters are HCP favourites Pete Whitaker and Mike Young. Jade Morrell is the Fairy Godmother, and Ellie Tripp (Evil Stepmother) and Barry Gray (Lord Chamberlain) are making their panto debuts. Putting the cast through their paces is Choreographer Tilly Ingle, who has worked on cruise ships and appeared in professional shows, and heading the 7-piece live band is HCP’s Musical Director, Stuart Darling. ‘Cinderella’ runs from 19th to 26th January, with profits going to local charities. Christchurch U3A Monday 14th January 2019 DAD’S ARMY, FACT AND FICTION Steve Roberts will give an affectionate look at both the Home Guard and its portrayal in the popular TV series Dad’s Army. Monday 11th February 2019 FANS AND SOCIAL HISTORY Helen has collected antique fans for many years. This talk looks at what these simple objects tell us about the history of the time, and also about the history and manufacture of fans themselves. Maybe you have one at home you would like to know more about? Bring it along. Both these meetings will be held at Christchurch Baptist Church, Beaconsfield Rd, Bargates, BH23 1QT on the second Monday of the month at 2pm. All members and non-members are warmly welcome. Refreshments are always served after the presentation.
This month we feature the SHORTER WALKING GROUP led by Pat Parker. They meet usually on the third Friday of the month. Generally the starting point is always accessible to a local bus service. The group walk approx. 3-4 miles at a very leisurely pace, so that it’s comfortable to ‘walk and talk’ and enjoy the company of others. The King of Waltz pays homage to the Queen of the Regent! Regent General Manager invited to meet Andre Rieu following his London Concert on 12 December. A VIP reward for the Regent being the No 1 cinema in the UK and Ireland for the best audience attendance at the Andre Rieu concert broadcast screenings for the past four years running. 2015 – 2018 inclusive!
Having been the No 1 cinema in the UK and Ireland for the last four years running for the best audience attendance at Andre Rieu’s concert broadcast screenings, the King of Waltz decided it was time he re-paid the favour to the Regent in Christchurch by inviting the Regent’s General Manager, Felicity Porter and her Marketing Officer, Laura Dean, for some of his very special VIP treatment at his concert in London on Wednesday 12 December at the SSE Arena in Wembley. Front row tickets, VIP reception and a chance to meet Andre Rieu in person after the concert were all part of the package for Felicity and Laura. It was all arranged for the lucky ladies by Andre’s son, Pierre and Andre told them “We are so thrilled with the fact that you are such great supporters of us. Please keep it up!” Felicity and Laura were treated like fellow royalty by the King of Waltz and

commenting later, Felicity said: “This has been a dream come true, finally getting to meet Andre in person and seeing him live on stage playing his wonderful music. It has been a real night to remember for Laura and me!” Felicity was able to tell Andre in person that advance ticket sales for the three screenings of his New Year concert were already going through the roof and that she is confident that the Regent will retain its title as his No 1 cinema in the UK and Ireland in 2019!

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew le�uces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the be�er and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few le�uces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large acorn squash ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 cloves garlic (minced) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp mustard powder ¼ tsp onion powder 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter ½ red onion 1 tbsp olive oil 2 oz (60 g) soft goats cheese Small handful fresh mint Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200c 2. Cut the squash into 6 wedges leaving the skin on. Remove the seeds and place onto a baking sheet skin side down with the flesh facing up. Drizzle the wedges with olive oil and add the butter then sprinkle over the paprika, garlic, mustard and onion powder and season well. 3. Cover the tray with foil and make sure that it is pressed down well so that the wedges are sealed in. Place the tray into the oven to bake for 45 minutes; they will actually be steaming in their own juices at this point. 4. Meanwhile slice the onion and place into a frying pan with the olive oil, gently sauté the onion slices on a medium low heat until they are caramelized, set to one side. 5. After 45 minutes of cooking remove the squash from the oven and remove the foil cover, place back into the oven for 10 minutes to roast, after ten minutes top each wedge with caramelized onions and some crumbled goats cheese and place back into the oven for a further 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving plate, sprinkle with freshly chopped mint and serve.
