I wonder if the cold weather which we have been promised will be here by the time you read this? To date we have been really lucky with the mild climate. Certainly, on New Year’s Day, which seems oh so far away now, we had a wonderful stroll at Durdle Door and then a walk back in time at Tyneham Village, all in bright sunshine and very mild temperatures for the time of year. You can read all about it in this month’s issue of your magazine. I do think it is important to get out in the fresh air when we can.

How are you doing with your plans for 2019? We booked our holiday last week, which is very exciting. Hayden is going skiing with school in Italy, something none of us have done before, so I am sure he will really enjoy that. He is also busy with his Duke of Edinburgh Award, doing some volunteering work and has joined a running club with his friend. I wish I was that energetic! All in all, we have had a pretty good start to 2019. How about you?

‘Walk For Hope’ Means Cancer Patients Never Have To Walk Alone Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its third year on Sunday 9 June, and organisers would love more walkers than ever to stride out and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer. About 300 people took part in the 2018 walk, raising over £50,000. New for 2019 is the option of a five-mile route, alongside the ten and 20-mile distances, making the event even more accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities. Philip Wilson, who raised £670 by taking part in the ten mile event in 2018, said: “I work for John Lewis in Southampton which chose Wessex Cancer Trust’s Waterside Cancer Support Centre in Hythe as its charity of the year, and wanted to take part in this event to show my personal support to those living with cancer. What an emotional day it was. I met people who’ve had cancer and won, have cancer and are winning, and someone who has cancer but it’s incurable. I burst into tears Philip Wilson
reading the dedications on people’s backs, I had a moment in the middle when I thought about the many people I’ve known throughout my 38 years whose lives have been affected by cancer, and again when I crossed the finish line out of sheer pride. It was also a personal challenge for me – something to train for and a way of getting fitter and healthier.” Laura Beavis, Wessex Cancer Trust’s events manager, said: “The peace and beauty of the New Forest make it a fitting setting to come together to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer, and we would love 2019 to be the biggest and best yet.” Entrants will receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, a fundraising pack, a training and event guide, and membership to a Facebook group where they can meet other participants and share fundraising and training tips. After being cheered over the finish line, walkers will receive a medal and celebrate with well-earned refreshments. Anyone registering before 31st March can take advantage of early bird prices of £10 for a child under 16, £20 for adults, £70 for a team of four and £4 for dogs. What’s On 2019… Dorset Police Male Voice Choir – Pilgrim Bandits Charity Night

Dorset Police Male Voice Choir are performing for the Pilgrim Bandits Charity. This choir is known nationally and has performed internationally. The Pilgrim Bandits raise money for injured service personnel who have either physical or mental disabilities to overcome. Their latest event has been to pedal cycle the length of New Zealand. Talking about Wildlife...
Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Winter is a hard time of year to find food, so they need all the help they can get! Dorset Blind Association:
A century of serving the community Did you know that there are currently over 5,000 people registered as blind or partially sighted and an estimated 30,000 people living with serious sight loss in Dorset? That is the equivalent to almost 1 in every 25 people living in the county. A local charity has been working for over 100 years now to help Dorset people who have to face the challenges which arise from the disability of sight loss. Formed in 1918, the Dorset Blind Association works to help people adjust to living with serious sight loss, to still feel their life has purpose and to enable them to lead full, healthy and socially active lives in their local community, lived as independently as they chose. Support is practical, community focused and tailored to each individual person’s needs. Crucially for many, it is not time limited in any way, because for most people sight loss is sadly not curable and also people’s needs change over time. Dorset Blind Association goes about its business quietly and without fuss and regularly helps around 1,000 people each month, doing this with just a small staff team, supported by over 300 volunteers, who collectively give more than 30,000 hours of time each year. The charity’s work, and that amazing contribution from its volunteers, was recognised in 2017 by it being selected to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
The new shop in Saxon Square, Christchurch Demand for the charity’s services is increasing, while local authority and health support for most visually impaired people continues to be cut, and as Dorset Blind Association receives no government or health funding for its work, it relies on support from the local community to fund its services. A new charity shop, recently opened in Saxon Square, Christchurch, is just one way the charity is trying to raise funds, so if you have unwanted goods to donate to a charity shop, or you have a few hours to spare each week and would like to volunteer to help there, please think of this very local cause as one worthy of your support. Every penny raised at the shop and through other fundraising activities is only ever spent helping blind and partially sighted people living in your Dorset community. They could be your friends or neighbours. Is it true a ‘Common Law Marriage’ means nothing in law? There are about 3.3 million unmarried couples currently living together in the UK. That is about 1 family in 5, and this is also the fastest growing family type. There are many reasons for choosing not to get married, but many unmarried couples do not realise that they are leaving themselves in a precarious financial position. Adventures of Nellie
The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Tyneham Village on the Isle of Purbeck. Frequently described as a “ghost town” and you certainly feel that when you visit. Poor Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan who ‘retired’ earlier this year would have loved the walk back in time in this beautiful, serene, yet sad ambience. In 1943 the Army took over the village, to use the land as their training ground, promising its long-established inhabitants that they could return after the war. That never happened and now still used as an army training ground with tanks and artillery flying by intermittently, the general public is allowed to visit at designated times and days of the year. By chance we took a drive out to the Purbecks on New Years Day, and what a gorgeous day it was. Glorious sunshine, a wonderful crisp English winter’s day. Stephen, Hayden and I set off for Durdle Door to breathe in the “new air” of 2019 and gaze into the vast space beyond the cliff tops. Glistening turquoise blue water shimmering below us with swirling white clouds above us. What
St Mary’s Church, Tyneham
There is a lot of information in the area a wonderful way to start the New Year. The gates at Durdle Door were closing earlier than usual, and I had seen the sign to Tyneham Village on the way. Having never been to the village it seemed a good idea to go and by sheer luck it was open to the public. I would suggest if you want to go, that you check the opening times as you really would not want to be disappointed. You can visit www. dorsetforyou.gov.uk/lulworth-rangewalks to check before you set off. Many of the houses in this former vibrant village are dilapidated, with long lost roofs and broken walls which all adds to this ‘walk back in time’ and mystical feeling which enshrouds the whole area. Nothing bad happened there, except of course that all its inhabitants were taken from their homes and rehoused, to be told they could return. Maybe that is the sadness which hangs over these houses. They never saw their owners again. I believe there are still some inhabitants alive today, but most have regrettably passed away. The scene makes you stop and wonder at who

27 lived there, what were they like, what was life like in those days? Many questions pop up in your mind as you look in wonder. The atmosphere is very quiet and calm. Quite in contrast with the army vehicles, tanks and guns which practice their aim at the targets literally a stone’s throw away when the public are allowed no where near the village. The School House and Church are still fully intact and now little museums to commemorate those who lived there. There are old black and white photos, memorabilia and reminders of our bygone days. Very special. The school is particularly a reminder of the changes which have taken place in the last 60 years. This was a place you did not backflash your elders or question them in any way. Cheekiness was frowned upon. Silence in the classroom was demanded. Yet it also seemed a happy place, one of learning and comradeship, a chance to read about the rest of the world, understand sums and get to know other boys and girls. Personally, I love old churches, and this was does not
The Old School House, Tyneham disappoint either. Idyllic. Set in its own gardens, it is a wonderful example of our many historic buildings. We are so lucky. The village has been featured in the movies too, In 1985 it was used for the filming of Comrades, which depicts the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. I have not seen that, have you? Then in 2006 the village was used as the setting for the climax of the comicthriller Angel’s Share by Mike Ripley which I have also not seen. Maybe I will have a look and see if I can find them. I highly recommend a visit to this incredible walk back in time. For us it was a great way to start 2019! By Debbie Corney

The meetings always start at 2pm, and all members and non-members are invited to attend. Refreshments are always served at the conclusion of each meeting. This month we feature the CHRISTCHURCH U3A SINGERS. A very large group of singers who meet every Monday morning at New Church Hall. This year they held Christmas Celebration Concert at All Saints in Southbourne to a full house and appreciative audience. The concert embraced both bible and and poetry readings, as well as a full musical programme, in which the 60 strong choir gave a joyful rendering of the African American Spiritual ‘Go Tell it on the Mountain’. A wonderful way to end a memorable evening.

• Erect a cold frame, polytunnel or greenhouse • Plant out onion sets • Sow tomatoes indoors • Chit seed potatoes • Sow early beetroot and summer cabbages • Plant soft fruit bushes The days are getting a little longer, green shoots are starting to appear and we’re all just itching to get out in the garden now. Just one problem - it’s still likely to be blooming cold! Extremes in weather are typical for this month so even if we do have a warmer spell I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to start sowing seeds outdoors. It’s at this time of year that having some undercover growing space is a real boon - not least because it’s so much more of a pleasure working in a protected environment, basking in the glory of those few rays of sun, than it is feeling a gale force wind that seems as it if’s come straight from the arctic! If you don’t have a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame then why not think about investing in one now? Get it built in February and you can get a head start on many plants for the season to come. Which is best? Consider the space available - if space is limited then a cold frame, may be a good option. Green houses can offer lots of benefits but are generally not a great idea if your garden is also the kids play area and they can be hugely expensive. On the plus side, they
are not easy to get rid of so if you’re prepared for a bit of work you may be able to pick up a second-hand one very cheaply providing you are happy to dismantle and move it yourself (try free cycle). We opted for a polytunnel, which was very reasonable in price and gave us several weekends of entertainment building it. Follow the instructions carefully, don’t rush it and you’ll need at least 2 of you when it comes to putting the plastic on. With both greenhouses and polytunnels you need to remember that they can become very hot in the summer and ensure that adequate ventilation is available. So, now that you have this great new space what can you plant in it? Early tomatoes can be started off in pots and if you plant some summer cabbages now you can get them established and benefit from a crop by late spring or early summer. Cucumbers, beetroot, leeks and lettuces can also be sown indoors and if you want to try something a little more exotic why not plant some peppers, aubergines and even a melon? This is also a good month to think about soft fruit . Most fruit bushes, trees and canes need time to get established before you start to get a good yield and it is easy to overlook them in favour of crops that give a quicker return. If you don’t have any fruit growing on your plot how about adding just one type of fruit each year? You could plant raspberry canes this month, or incorporate a gooseberry or blackcurrant bush into your border. If you have pot grown strawberries that have spent the winter indoors then place them outside as they will only flower after exposure to cold weather. Plants that have over wintered outside can be brought in now.

Pecan crusted chicken breast stuffed with roasted butternut squash and goats cheese served with a white wine and pancetta cream sauce
1. Pre heat the oven to 380F/180c. 2. Place the butternut squash onto a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place into the oven to bake until cooked through and starting to turn golden brown; this should take For the stuffed chicken approximately 15 to 20 minutes. 4 chicken breasts 3. Using a small knife, make an incision into the side of each chicken 170g butternut squash (peeled and breast. Move the knife around horizontally inside the breast to create a diced) pocket for the filling. Try to keep the incision no wider than an inch in 1 tbsp freshly chopped thyme length to keep the filling from spilling out when cooking. 100g soft goats cheese 4. Fill each breast with equal amounts of goats cheese and butternut Sea salt and freshly ground black squash by pushing them through the incision. Close the incision with a pepper cocktail skewer. Save some roasted butternut squash to garnish the tops 250g toasted pecans, finely chopped of the chicken breasts when they are cooked. 3 free range eggs, beaten 5. Sprinkle each filled breast with the chopped thyme and season 50ml olive oil generously with sea salt and black pepper. For the sauce 6. To prepare the pecans take whole pecans and pulse them in a food ¼ white onion (finely diced) 4 slices of pancetta or smoked streaky processor until they resemble course breadcrumbs. 7. Beat the eggs with ¼ tsp of salt (which helps to break down the egg bacon, chopped making it easier to dip the chicken in) and place the chopped pecans into 1 tsp freshly chopped thyme a bowl. Then dip each cutlet into the egg mixture and then the pecans 1 clove garlic, crushed and make sure they are well coated. 180 ml double cream 8. Place the chicken breasts onto a tray drizzled with olive oil and then 120 ml dry white wine drizzle each breast generously with more olive oil and season once more. 4 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated Place into the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. 9. Garnish the escallops with the remaining caramelized onions and freshly chopped parsley, don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewers before serving! 10. To make the sauce start by sautéing the pancetta or bacon until crispy and then add the onions and cook through until softened. At this point add the garlic and thyme and continue to cook for another minute to release the flavors. 11. Add the white wine and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until almost all of the wine has evaporated. Then add the cream, parmesan and seasoning. Continue to simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened. 12. To serve, place each chicken breast onto a serving plate (don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewer) and spoon over the sauce. Top with some of the remaining butternut squash and some roughly chopped pecans and Ryan Turner, real food and low-carb a sprinkle of parsley. chef - www.thefoodbible.com
