Calling all book lovers! A popular home library service, run by Royal Voluntary Service, the national volunteering organisation, is looking to grow its service for housebound readers in the BCP Council area. The Home Library Service brings books to people who can no longer get to a library. It operates from most libraries in Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth. Volunteers deliver books and share their love of reading with the people they visit. They are a friendly face and a regular visitor to those whose mobility and social interactions are limited, and they provide a useful check on the safety and well-being of their readers, too. One of our readers commented: “It is an excellent service; it’s a real delight when it is hard to get to the library oneself. The volunteer is so friendly, they may be the only person I shall see all day.”

Talking about Wildlife...
Fascinating Fungi Fungi don’t fit into the plant or animal kingdoms but into an entire category of their own. The Fungi kingdom is a large group of organisms that includes yeasts, moulds, and, of course, mushrooms. Found everywhere - in the soil, in water, on and within plants, and even in the human body - fungi are essential to life on earth and they have a fascinating biology. Fungi play an important role within our ecosystems, helping to recycle nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter releasing carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus into the soil and the atmosphere. Without fungi, these recycling activities would be seriously reduced, and we would have a lot more decaying material around our feet. They are important directly as food for us, with many edible mushroom species grown and harvested for sale and some mushrooms and truffles considered as delicacies. While mushrooms aren’t a large proportion of what we eat day to day, fungi are also widely used in the production of many other foods and drinks such as cheeses, beer and wine, and bread. Fungi are also vitally important for the good

growth of most plants and crops. In 1885, German biologist Albert Bernard Frank coined the word “mycorrhiza” to describe this symbiotic relationship in which fungus grows around plant roots. This gives the plants greater access to water and minerals such as phosphorus and nitrogen and even increases their immunity. In exchange, the plant provides carbohydrates and other nutrients to the fungi. Dorset Wildlife Trust manages many nature reserves to support and benefit all kinds of wildlife, including fungi. In west Dorset, Kingcombe Meadows and Powerstock are some of the best places in England to find fungi species, many of them rare, all of them beautiful. The huge variation in geology and plant life at Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve ensures a variety of habitats which allows for a larger variety of fungus species than one would expect in a few hundred acres. The Kingcombe Centre’s 2020 programme of events is now live, which includes Fungi courses, so you can learn more about this fascinating subject. A Sylvanian Family rabbit to the average adult human looks like a small hard plastic rabbit covered in a velvet material – it stands, motionless on two feet. However, to the 5-year-old girl who received not only one rabbit but also a whole family of rabbits, this was her world over Christmas. A world she could escape into, make up stories and create imaginary lives. Lily* was one of the children who was helped by Wave 105 Mission Christmas. Identified by her school as a family in need of support, Lily and her dad had been through a rough time and were struggling financially. Dad as a single parent was trying to make ends meet by juggling work and looking after his daughter. They only just had enough money for basic needs – food and a roof over their head but certainly not enough for presents. Lily’s school contacted us and asked if we would add them to our list of families to help. Her teacher mentioned that all Lily wanted this Christmas was a Sylvanian Family animal and her dad had been scouring charity shops to find one but to no avail. Every day during December, an army of volunteers in Chandlers Ford were counting and sorting through the mountain of donated presents. Every day they checked for specifically requested toys but no luck for Lily. Then one morning towards the end of Mission Christmas, a van-load of presents was delivered from Sainsbury’s and in the midst of the trains, cars, dolls, teddies, books and Lego was a Sylvanian rabbit family and a house for them to live in. Lily’s teacher collected and gave them to her dad. Lily was able to play with her little family over Christmas and throughout the following year. This would not have happened without the generosity of individuals and companies who donate every year to Mission Christmas. Over 93,000 children and young people live in poverty in the south (SO, PO and BH postcodes)** which means these children do not eat a hot meal on a daily basis, have no central heating in their homes and do not own a full uniform to wear to school. During our annual Mission Christmas campaign, Wave 105 Cash for Kids asks the public to donate new and unwrapped gifts to help these disadvantaged youngsters, so they will have something to open on Christmas Day. The Dorset Directories Camper Van For anyone who is new to reading these fun pages, I would like to give you some background. They are meant to be a little tongue in cheek, family and friends orientated with places to visit around our wonderful southern coast and countryside. “Daichi” is a Japanese Nissan Elgrand, a converted Campervan who has a life of his own. He likes to show off and it is he that gets us out of the house, away from the computers and the TV, looking outwards. Daichi had his first criticism last month, a serious gentleman who did not see eye to eye with the “Dashing Dude’s” playful nature. You see, we like to bring a smile to your face and maybe lighten life up a bit. (We sincerely apologise to the gentleman who clearly did not react like this.) After-all there are plenty of things that do the opposite, so let’s not be too serious, let’s live a little, have some good old English entertainment and create some great memories. Here we go… again! Daichi really did his homework this month. Caring for the environment is so important and Daichi found something rather special. True to his nature, this area has a name that makes you instantly smile…

A sighting of the lesser-spotted Debbie! “Slop Bog”. Yes, we went to Slop Bog! You can imagine my reaction, or maybe best not to. Actually, this is a fascinating place, situated just off the A31 to Ferndown and the B3072 to West Moors. It is an SSSI that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest! Not only is it a fascinating place to explore, but it was saved by a group of people who call themselves, “The Slop Bog Guardians”. How wonderful is that. Way back in 2003 trees were going to be felled and this group of dedicated locals got together to save the day. Their motto is - “To preserve and protect the character of Slop Bog Local Nature Reserve by maintaining a balance between the views of the local community and national conservation strategies”. Daichi is impressed. We had got all kitted out in wellies and raincoats, and Daichi had the coffee ready. He knows me well. Off we set, rather early for us as the weather was going to turn and we did not want to get caught in the bog and have to be air-rescued. (as if… remember the time Nellie got stuck in the mud…) As soon as you enter the bog area, there is the peaceful silence of wondrous

29 nature, with a wall, a backdrop of constant swishing and humming from the hundreds of cars passing on the main road just on the other side of the majestic outline of trees. The difference between our busy, hustling, noisy lifestyle and the serenity of nature is unmissable. Not far into the bog we saw, what I thought was something burnt in the middle of a clump of trees… showing my ignorance, it turned out to be a food block, possibly a salt lick for the cows roaming around! The trampled muddy earth around it, made it look like a burning. Maybe I am once again showing the difference between our ‘dangerous environment’ which is all too often prevalent in the news and the calmness of what was actually before me. A very good reason to get out, away from our electronic age for a while. The British White Cattle even came over to say Hello and prove it was a feeding area! Stephen enjoyed doing his best David Bailey impersonation, taking lots of photos of the curious calf. We regrettably did not see any lizards, snakes or slow worms, or maybe this was a blessing as Daichi may have screeched off and left us stranded. In the summer this is a haven for butterflies and birds including Stonechats, Dartford Warbler,

Cattle roam the heathland Nightjars, Snipes and the Greater Spotted Woodpecker. This day you could only see the Lesser Spotted Debbie… literally in my raincoat. Frogs love it here too and all sorts of funghi thrive in full glory. The beauty, the space and the tranquillity really helps you to see things in perspective, ‘chill out’ (literally, as it was not too warm) and collect your thoughts. The coffee that Daichi provided from his whistling kettle, overlooking the heathland was very welcomed. A simple morning out on a cold, slightly wet November day. Life does not have to be full on 24-7. Time out can make all the difference. There are hundreds of these Sites of Scientific Interest, over 4000 in fact in the UK and 240 in Dorset alone. Maybe you could find one and let Daichi know? He loves to hear from you. It is always possible to help and volunteers are welcomed with open arms. It is a great way to meet new friends, learn some new skills and look after the environment. A win-win we say. As Christmas is coming and there is much to do, do remember to take some time out for yourself. Taking a walk is very therapeutic. A Very Merry Christmas to you all, from Daichi the Dashing Dude! Half Term Box Office Bonanza at the Regent Over 3,300 tickets were sold over 7 sensational performances at the Regent in Christchurch between Wednesday 30 October – Saturday 2 November, for the Highcliffe Charity Players production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash hit musical, Cats, which was the highlight of so many children’s Half Term holiday. Families simply flocked to the Regent in such numbers that two additional afternoon matinee shows had to be added to the initial run of five performances of Cats, with the result that box-office records were tumbling like nine pins at the Centre. Having sold out all 7 performances of Cats, the show has become both the Highcliffe Charity Players and the Regent’s best-selling musical show ever. HCP are not only the first local Company to achieve a total sell out at the Centre for a such a long running musical show but this is also great news for the local charities that HCP support year in year out with their shows both at the Regent and St Mark’s Hall in Highcliffe. Local reviewers were simply running out of superlatives as they penned their universally brilliant reviews for Cats, whilst the sold-out audiences were making themselves hoarse as they raised the roof at the Regent to cheer the incredible HCP cast with a standing ovation at the end of each show.

GUIDE Composting
No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Marine Paintings of the New Forest Exhibition The New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst is now host to its first marine painting exhibition dedicated to the New Forest National Park’s beautiful coastal environment. The event was opened by Hon. Mrs Mary Montagu-Scott at a well-attended preview evening in October. The exhibition features five local artists: Barry Peckham, Peter Frost, Richard Tratt, Colin Richens and Barry Miles. Barry Peckham recently celebrated 50 years of painting with a retrospective exhibition, also at the New Forest Heritage Centre. Peter Frost said, “it’s been great working towards this exhibition and we are all thrilled to see our paintings looking so good on display in the centre of the New Forest”.

Tastes so good... Mulled Wine
An easy mulled wine recipe for the festive season, brimming with Christmassy spice. Don't bother with expensive wine - a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference! Eat, Drink and be merry!
Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind (avoid the pith) 1 large piece lemon rind (avoid the pith) 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar, (or to taste)
Preparation time: less than 30 mins Cooking time: less than 10 mins Serves: 4- 6 adults
Method
Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don't bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you'd like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the avours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the ďŹ reside.
