Talbot Village Trust supports new Dorset Blind Association shop Talbot Village Trust has provided Dorset Blind Association with £10,000 to enable the charity to open a new shop in Christchurch town centre.
Dorset Blind Association (DBA) opened its first shop in Ferndown last year and has been able to open its second shop in Christchurch’s Saxon Square, due to receiving the required funding from the grant giving charity. The shop opening is part of an ongoing programme which aims to have a minimum of six charity shops operating across the county. This project will not only generate income for the charity, it will also help raise public awareness of DBA’s work and the shops will act as local hubs in the community. Jonathan Holyhead, chief executive officer of Dorset Blind Association, said: “We are so grateful to Talbot Village Trust for their kind and generous support of our charity shop project. This project is absolutely crucial to the future delivery of our key community support service, which helps blind and partially sighted people across Dorset adjust to living with serious sight loss. It means that we are able to support those in the community to still lead full, healthy and socially active lives, as independently as they choose. The Trust’s donation is an investment which will help us to generate income to fund our services for many years to come, which in return will benefit many visually impaired people in East Dorset.” Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot
Village Trust, added: “It is a pleasure to have supported DBA with the necessary funding to open their second shop in Christchurch. Nuffield Health Bournemouth Welcomes Dorset’s Only Female Orthopaedic Surgeon Nuffield Health is ‘thrilled’ to welcome Dorset’s first female orthopaedic surgeon to its evergrowing team of leading consultants. Nikki Kelsall is an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who specialises in foot and ankle problems, including diabetic foot conditions. Nikki offers a regular clinic at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital tending to patients with any problems affecting their feet or ankles. Nikki often sees patients that suffer with bunions, curly toes, flat feet, foot or ankle pain, ulcers, ankle arthritis and Achilles disorders. As well as this, Nikki also commonly sees patients with soft tissue and bony foot or ankle injuries. As a once committed dancer and performer, Nikki knows first-hand how important it is to look after your feet. Nikki Kelsall, orthopaedic surgeon, said: “I was a dancer for 13 years before studying medicine, this helps me understand why amateur and professional performers and athletes, have a drive to get back on their feet quickly, no matter their age. “Recently I treated a man in his 70s who is a professional table tennis champion and required treatment for foot pain, but was desperate to be in tip-top shape before an upcoming match. Thinking Green! Sustainable living seems to have moved higher up on the news agenda’s in 2018. This year there won’t have been many of us who haven’t seen an image of a beach, home or away, li�ered with plastic, or a beloved marine creature wrapped up in plastic, inside and out. This raises the allimportant question: what can we do about it?
Being ‘green’ and caring for the environment isn’t easy – if it were, we wouldn’t be in this situation. The plastic that pollutes our seas exists because it’s made our lives easier in some way. For some of us, changing our habits to move to an alterative may seem more inconvenient or expensive a�er years of taking the ‘easy option’ which has been given to us. But there are things we can do in our daily lives which take li�le or no effort and could actually save you money in the process. 1. Reduce single-use plastic: Say no to drinking straws, say no to single use plastic bags and say no to plastic bo�les. Did you know some of these items can hang around for over 500 years before they start to break down? Buy a reusable water bo�le, go without the straw or buy a material shopping bag you can use time and time again. 2. Composting: Not only is composting your food scraps great for reducing waste, but it’s also beneficial for your garden and its
wildlife. Many councils offer a food waste collection bin – if you have one, make sure you use it!
3. Seafood sourcing: Do you know where your seafood is coming from? 90% of global fish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. Use the Good Fish Guide to find out which fish are the most and least sustainable before you make your purchase. www.mcsuk.org/goodfishguide/ search 4. Replace your coffee cup: Not all takeaway coffee cups are recyclable, so why don’t you help cut down on the waste and get your own reusable coffee cup? Return of longest running Docu-soap, Monkey Life, to our screens on Pick Monkey Life series 11 returned to our screens on channel Pick last month, with the much anticipated catch up of all the rescues and daily dramas at the world’s biggest primate rescue centre. Based at Monkey World, Dorset, the documentary follows Dr Alison Cronin and the team, as she rescues primates in need from around the world, and rehabilitates them into groups of their own kind. At the centre, they have a safe, stable home for life.
Capturing the day-to-day life of residents
The programme is one of the longest running docu-soaps on TV, as its former incarnation, Monkey Business first appeared on screens in 1998. Nicknamed by staff “Beast-enders”, the series won a place in the public’s hearts with its fascinating, and often tragic insight into monkey and ape rescues. Series 11 follows Alison to Lebanon and Turkey to rescue two guenons, a baby loris and a chimpanzee, while back in Dorset it captures the day-today lives of the 260 primate residents of Monkey World.

Filmed over a year, the series takes the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster, from the woolly monkey group celebrating new arrivals, to tense rescue operations, and the teams’ sad goodbyes to old friends too. This will be the first Christmas since my partner and I separated and we are struggling to agree on contact arrangements for our children. For most parents, arranging contact with the children over the Christmas period can be a very simple process with both parents being able to agree to the times and dates. However, unfortunately in some cases this is not so simple and agreeing contact with your ex -partner can be very difficult. There are no definite rules as to how, or when, Christmas contact should take place, each case is different. However, the key consideration is ‘what is best for the children’ and perhaps in some cases it is appropriate to ask what the children would like. It is always best for parents to be proactive to plan contact over the Christmas period sooner, rather than later by either discussing the plans directly, or in writing. Think about alternating Christmas so the children will be with mum on Christmas one year, and with Dad the next. Alternatively consider dividing Christmas Day between both
parents to allow the children to see both. Communication is key to making arrangements, try to put your differences aside and work together. If you cannot communicate directly with your partner, then seek help from a family lawyer who can assist you with this. If in the unfortunate event contact arrangements cannot be agreed, then both parents may wish to consider family mediation, where a trained mediator will be present to help guide you towards a mutual agreement. If mediation cannot assist and all other avenues have been exhausted then you need to seek the help of a Court, however, please be aware this will be timely and costly.

Ballard School Dancers ‘Highly Commended’ at National Competition for Creative Performance A talented group of dancers from independent school, Ballard, have been recognised at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Dance Competition. Held at Reddam House Berkshire, the ISA Dance Competition brought together youth dancers from schools across the UK. Showing off their skills in the KS4/KS5 competition category, Ballard School’s Senior Visions Dance Company received the ‘Highly Commended’ Award for their F.E.A.R. (Forget Everything and Run or Face Everything and Rise) performance. Our girls were very professional throughout, including Megan and Jordan Tapsell who also entered the ‘Dance-Off ’. The whole team flew the flag brilliantly for Dance at Ballard!’’ The Ballard School Visions Dance Company is a programme for the ablest dancers in Years 6-11. They meet weekly for intense dance tuition, which gives them an opportunity to develop their dance vocabulary, technique and choreography skills. At the
tournament, the girls also got to see Maisie Wignall perform the Lindy Hop. Maisie is a former pupil who left Ballard in 2016 to study Dance and Performing Arts at the Arts Educational School in London. Sharon continues: ”We had a good catch up with Maisie, who performed an amazing dance with her youth company. It was great to see her and how well she is clearly doing following her time with us’’. Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL CENTRE - WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2019 BBC presenter Anita Rani has been announced as host for Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, ahead of a 13-date UK & Eire arena tour in March 2019. A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!” Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. Hans Zimmer said of composing the music for Blue Planet II – “The idea is to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using the orchestra in an unconventional way, we wanted to create ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series”. The Blue Planet II television show was the most watched TV programme of 2017 in the United Kingdom, reaching 37.6 million viewers. The UK & Eire arena tour are committed to reducing environmental impact. The Glad Rag Production Company returns to the Regent in Christchurch for their seventh sensational year with Christmas Spectacular at the Centre from Wednesday 19 – Monday 24 December. This year’s Christmas Spectacular is once again set at the North Pole at Santa’s village where his ‘Magic Toy Workshop’ is located. Santa and his elves are busy preparing for another festive season when a mysterious letter from a friend forces Santa to leave the workshop in the hands
of his elves. How will they cope without Santa to guide them? Then when people turn ‘frosty’ because Santa has disappeared and there may not be any new toys to wrap up as presents, who will step in to save Christmas? Chaos is reigning as Santa’s little helpers, Sprout, Squash and Robyn, are getting in a tangle with all the new tinsel, whilst Benji and Bruce the Polar Bears, who are also supposed to be helping, have disappeared as well! No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Christmas Son Et Lumiere This popular FREE show is back for its 4th year. Hoburne Development supports the regeneration into Highcliffe High Street Specialists in the design and development of family homes, Hoburne Development, is investing six and a half million pounds into Highcliffe High Street, by developing a selection of contemporary one and twobed apartments, two-bed mews houses and penthouse suites, along with new retail premises. The first development, named ‘Postmasters Court’ after the post office which used to occupy the site, is due to be completed in December 2018. Nestled in the heart of Highcliffe, Postmasters Court will comprise 12 one and twobedroom flats and two-bedroom terraced houses. It also features two shop fronts, which are now occupied by Mitchells Estate Agents and Capstan Security. Starting from £150,000 for a onebedroom apartment, the properties will enable first-time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder, with an allocation for ‘Help to Buy’ scheme applicants. The homes are situated on Highcliffe’s vibrant high street, so residents will be able to enjoy a host of convenience stores, local shops and cafes right on their doorsteps. The famous Dorset coastline is also only a short walk away.

CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche
Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.
