Stephen, Hayden and myself are off to Hull for Christmas this year to catch up with my family. It is quite a while since we have travelled up there for the festive season and I am really looking forward to seeing the extended family as well as my parents. For me that is what Christmas is all about. Mum and Dad have come down South for the past few years, but now Hayden is 9 we feel that Father Christmas wouldn’t mind dropping the presents off in Hull… If you are entertaining this year, then maybe you need some help in the home, to create the space you want. Women’s Institute Christchurch Central W.I had a m o st i n t e r e st i n g N o v e m b e r meeting. Mr John Lewis the local h i st o r i a n a n d ph o to gr a p h e r entertained the members with a presentation ‘Entitled Now and Then Mr Lewis described it as a “wonderful nostalgic photographic journey through Christchurch both past and present”, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Many of the images were from his own

collection. He recently retired as manager from the Red House Museum and he has an extensive knowledge of the local areas. Sally Harvey gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the Members. Coffee and a Raffle concluded the meeting. The December meeting on 5th celebrated Christmas with a craft display, entertainment, carols and a grand raffle. It was held at the Baptist Hall, Bargates.

Brrr... Baby, It’s Cold Outside! Next time you step outside and think “its cold out here”, please spare a thought for the many people that often, through no fault of their own, find themselves homeless and living on the streets in our community. There are many different circumstances that can lead to someone being homeless; job loss; relationship breakups; mental health issues; escaping abuse or domestic violence; the reasons can be as varied as the people who find themselves in need of help. During the winter, BCHA run schemes in Bournemouth and Poole to help more people shelter from the harsh weather conditions outside. In Bournemouth, St Paul’s night shelter runs Winter Watch, where an additional 10 bed spaces are provided each night, meaning St Pauls provides shelter to 50 people every night. While Poole does not have a night shelter, when the weather drops below zero for three consecutive nights BCHA and Routes to Routes run a severe weather emergency provision,
opening Gateway church hall to offer 10 people shelter, a mattress, warm bedding and a hot nutritious meal. These schemes not only provide vital shelter, food and medical help for some very vulnerable people, but also allow BCHA staff to engage with people who would otherwise not access help. With BCHA’s support, people can take positive steps in their life and create hope for a brighter future. However, BCHA need your support to help to continue to offer these essential services, they need volunteers, clothing, food and money to enable them to help as many people as they can this winter. Grange Choral Society of Christchurch The Grange Choral Society will be performing its third concert under the direction of its new Director of Music Marcio da Silva in the Chistchurch Priory at 7:30 pm on Saturday January 19th 2013. The concert will comprise of works by Brahms, his very moving Requiem and the Song of Destiny. Marcio was appointed into his post in January 2012, since which time he has invigorated the choir working to improve quality of the singing in all of the individual parts. Born in 1983 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, he is now studying at the Royal College of Music in London under Peter Stark the son of the founder of the Grange. He has also studied in both France and Germany and is qualified with a Bachelor of Music degree in conducting. He has conducted the operas La Boheme and Carmen during his time in the Czech Republic. The dress-mad Ugly Sisters - Trinny and Susannah have an outrageous time at a health spa, Dandini is on Facebook and Prince Charming is into internet dating! But there’s plenty of traditional panto magic, too, as Cinderella (with the help of faithful Buttons and her Fairy Godmother) attempts to outwit her wicked stepmother and step-sisters and, by way of a lost slipper, win her Prince. Yes, she will go to the ball – a happy ending is assured! So, too, is HCP’s renowned panto formula for a fantastic fun evening – great sets and costumes, popular show songs, dazzling dance routines, slapstick humour and, of course, audience participation. The show’s Director is HCP favourite Tracey Barrington, herself an acclaimed Cinderella, who is now celebrating 30 years with the Players. “It’s proving huge fun working with such an enthusiastic and talented cast which features both HCP regulars and some bright young talent too. We’re all having a ball with this lovely new script – and with the happy mix of old and new musical numbers, we hope there will be something for everyone. The choreography is being shared by three popular HCP performers – Chairman Georgina Smith, Louise King and Yvonne Loader – while Stuart Darling returns as Musical Director of his first Charity Players’ panto. Stuart made his HCP debut conducting Half A Sixpence at the Regent Centre last July.

Following her success as HCP’s Beauty (Beauty and the Beast) and Red Riding Hood, 18-year-old Coral Norton now takes on the title role of Cinderella for the first time, after a busy summer performing in some of the Pre-Events at the Olympics, including singing in the Team GB single One Vision at the Royal Albert Hall in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Her Prince Charming is 24-year-old Charlotte Ferguson-Glover, who, though a newcomer to Charity Players, appeared in her first panto at the age of 15 and has enjoyed performing in local musical theatre ever since. She is currently studying for her Masters degree at Bournemouth University. HCP stalwarts Mike Young and Paul Barrington, both members of the company since the 80s, strut their stuff as the outrageous Ugly Sisters, Trinny and Susannah, while Paul’s son, 17-year-old Charlie Barrington, plays Cinderella’s faithful friend, Buttons – his first principal panto role. Other members of the cast include Emma McNish as the Prince’s valet, Dandini, Kate Claxton as the Fairy Godmother, David Coward as Cinderella’s father, Baron Hardup, Christine Duell as her wicked stepmother, Baroness Hardup, and Mark Weldon and Valerie Gillard as King and Queen Charming. Says HCP Chairman, Georgina: “Charity Players have performed over 70 productions, including most of the major pantomimes, acclaimed musicals and a string of entertaining revues over the past 40 years.
