Dear Christchurch, What great weather we have had. Let’s hope this continues and the children, as well as ourselves, all have a great summer! Some of the local children have been taking part in music and dance shows and there is an article on a couple of these on page 10. Wild flowers brighten up Christchurch verges A number of sites in Christchurch are now a riot of colour thanks to Christchurch Council’s policy of sowing wild flowers. The wild flowers help wild life and provide visually pleasing sites while reducing the number of cuts needed in these areas. A wide variety of seeds have been sown, including cornflowers, poppies, toad flax, gypsophila, blackeyed susans, chrysanthemums and corn marigolds. The wild flowers can now be seen at Church Hatch, at the entrance to Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre, at Bernards Mead in Jumpers, on Stony Lane roundabout and on the northern end of The Runway.
Matti Raudsepp, Head of Leisure and Open Spaces at the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership, said: “We have received many calls from residents and visitors congratulating us on the banks of wild flowers. Most people seem to find this a very pleasant alternative to constantly having to cut overgrown verges. Providing care where it’s needed “My physiotherapist, Carly Fricker, visits me at home for my rehabilitation following a stroke. Recovering and learning to get about again in my own surroundings, rather than in a hospital, is much better for me.” Michael Goulding “The whole home birth experience was just amazing. For us to be the sole focus of two highly experienced midwives - one looking after me and the other looking after the baby - was just so reassuring.” Serena and James Witt Michael Goulding and Serena and James Witt have both had very different experiences of receiving the care they needed at home, rather than in hospital. Michael Goulding recently suffered a stroke and was admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for eight days before being discharged. He was allocated a physiotherapist from the hospital’s 10-strong Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team. Since his stroke, Michael has been experiencing problems with his walking as well as sciatica pains in his back and legs. Following his discharge from hospital, as part of his rehabilitation, he has been receiving a mix of home-based musculosketal and neurological physiotherapy for at least 45 minutes every day. This programme of physiotherapy will take place for at least two weeks. He says: “I like receiving physio at home as it’s comfortable and convenient which I’m sure will help to aid a quick recovery. Having the therapist come to me in my own home is the biggest benefit, allowing me to rest as much as possible.” Serena and James Witt brought daughter Grace into the world at home, supported by Poole Hospital’s Eden home birth team. The five-strong team is dedicated to supporting home births, with their schedules geared around the women booked for home births and not hardand-fast rotas.

“Our midwife, Louise, was so confident and made us confident in our choice too,” said Serena. “The birth was everything we wanted it to be, with all our creature comforts and in our own surroundings.” Research shows that giving birth in a relaxed and calming environment is better for mum and baby, with benefits including a reduced need for pain relief. Care closer to home has been a focus for the NHS nationally for some time. When appropriate it can provide more flexible and accessible care for patients, resulting in a more personal experience. It also encourages greater independence with patients often thriving at home in more familiar surroundings. For some patients who are acutely unwell hospital is the right place to be. For some other patients who do not need acute hospital care, they will benefit more from care that is delivered much closer to home. No one wants to come in to hospital if they don’t need to so home care is much more appropriate. As a result, patients are more satisfied with the care they have received, have increased knowledge of their condition and therefore can often self-manage it better. Other examples where we are providing care where it’s needed include respiratory early discharge schemes, maternity and children’s services. Christchurch Hospital has seen an increase in the number of outpatient clinics, blood test and x-ray services provided, so that patients don’t have to travel to Bournemouth for their appointments. Ophthalmology (eyes) outpatient clinics have also recently started running at Blandford Hospital, following a request from a GP. The trusts recently launched their Informatics Strategy which sets out ambitious plans on how IT and technology will support delivering care where it’s needed. This includes phone clinics, telemedicine and phone apps. The proposed merger between Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals will mean we can provide even more care where it’s needed, ultimately providing more personal care. Outpatient and day-case services will remain on all three sites. Merger allows us to combine staff rotas and provide more flexible working. Improving patient outcomes is a key health priority for the new foundation trust, if approved. The merger will also ensure we can sustain the services we provide and keep them local.

Show Time!
During the heat of last month I was part of a small team filming two very different end of year school shows, both hugely popular. One at the Regent Centre, Christchurch and the other at the Bournemouth Pavilion. Both were excellent and reflected the hard work and dedication of the young people and staff at rehearsal, on stage and behind the scenes. The first, ‘Save Our Planet’ was for family and friends at Christchurch Infant School. This was closely followed by the Big Little Theatre School production of Broadway Showtunes. Between them they spanned all ages from 6 and a bit to 19 plus, giving young people a chance to show what they can do, or as Big Little puts it ‘permission to shine’. This was evident not only on stage but whilst speaking with the cast for the Broadway Showtunes DVD. I was impressed by the confidence and ease shown by youngsters when I pointed a microphone towards them. I was fortunate to also be able to speak with the co-founder of Big Little, Michelle Guy, co-producer of Showtunes, the thirteenth in the series. Locally based Michelle met Colin Billing, the company’s creative producer and musical supervisor whilst directing for the original Big Little Theatre Company, an adult company. In a pub one night they came up with an idea of a youth theatre and in 1996 co-founded Big Little Theatre School, a non-profit organisation to promote personal excellence through performance for students aged 3 - 19 years. Children progress through four youth theatre companies dependant on age and future intentions. They meet on Saturdays in Bournemouth. For those who want to commit to theatre as a career, there is the Professional Development Programme. This prepares them to meet the very high standards required for auditions for sought after places at top Theatre Schools. The key to the success of Big Little is in employing experienced professionals
in all aspects of training and putting on productions. Just picking two from several qualified members of the team, Colin Billing has several West End and national credits for his work. The lighting designer, Georg Spindler is flown in from Switzerland for the week. Past students are well represented in London’s theatre land and national tours. Jack Donnelly is playing the lead in the new BBC drama series ‘Atlantis’ and Victoria Yeates is currently filming for a new series of ‘Call the Midwife’. It is good to see that local theatre continues to flourish, with a new generation waiting in the wings. Talking about Wildlife... Meet a tree in Dorset It may be easy to take trees in our everyday environment for granted, but it is impossible to imagine life on Earth without them. Trees are of immeasurable value both to us and wildlife, from being home to hundreds of different species, to providing us with practically all basics of life, as well as spiritual refuge and inspiration. Various wildlife; from the tiniest insects and fungi to birds and mammals, live in and on trees, and also use them for shelter and food. Trees are essential as wildlife corridors, and species such as dormice live the majority of their active lives in the safety of the tree canopy, travelling from one tree to another. Throughout their history, humans have benefited from trees that have provided them with lumber, furniture, warmth, food, shade, paper, and, of course, oxygen! The process of photosynthesis, carried out by trees and other plants, is one of the very foundations of life. There are around 60 native species of trees in Britain, which come in numerous varieties of sizes, shapes and colours. Trees fall into two main groups: evergreen or deciduous. Evergreens, for example conifers, maintain their leaves throughout the seasons, whereas deciduous trees such as oak generally lose their leaves once a year. Trees are an integral part of our landscape in Dorset, which is also a home to some impressive veteran trees, treasured for their cultural, ecological and historical significance. Veteran trees are
in the ancient stage of their life and can be identified by a number of features, including bark loss, decay holes and a high level of independent wildlife species living in it. It is important that Veteran trees are protected, as many species of wildlife that live in them could not survive in any other tree. Dorset has a number of veteran trees, including a yew tree in Lytchett Matravers which is estimated to be 1,500 years old. Most famously perhaps, Dorset has the avenue of Beech trees planted by French prisoners of war which run from Blandford Forum to Wimborne. Dorset Wildlife Trust also have some stunning ancient trees at the Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve, and on 22nd August we are inviting adults and children to come and ‘meet a tree’ to find out more about their history and what makes them so special. You can do anything on the Internet, even swap your house; intrigued I read the invitation on the screen. ‘Jenny and Chris and their lively family would like to spend two weeks in London sightseeing, living in your house. Why don’t you come and enjoy a fortnight’s holiday at the seaside, living in theirs.’ It was an invitation too good to miss; I e-mailed back immediately and soon we were off on our free holiday to Bournemouth. I read the directions Chris and Jenny had e-mailed us, while Mike drove and the children hit each other with their buckets and spades in the back seat. ‘Here we are 206, Town Avenue, Netherbourne’ I said excitedly. ‘Where’s the sea then?’ yelled my son. ‘Just be patient and wait till we check the house out.’ ‘Wicked’ cried the children as we looked at the four bedroom detached house. Inside I admired the en-suite while Mike inspected the barbeque on the huge patio. I wondered what Jenny and Chris and their five children were making of our tiny two and a half bedroom terrace house. The sun was shining and the twins were already in their swimming costumes. ‘Directions to the beach are on the kitchen notice board Mike.’ Mike frowned as he read the notes out. ‘Walk up the high street, the buses are every half hour (if you’re lucky), then it’s a very scenic ride to the cliff top, ten minutes walk down the zig zag. If going by car DON’T use the car parks, they cost a fortune!! Better to park in the avenue and walk down the chine - see map.’ ‘Are we near the sea?’ asked my son. ‘Well let’s go and find out’ I said brightly. ‘I’m not carrying all this stuff on the bus’ declared Mike. We drove down a very long high street, looking at the same shops we had left behind in Handsford, then through endless avenues of pine trees. ‘Ah, this is it, Mayfair Avenue; did he say we could park anywhere Mike? Looks like everyone else has had the same idea. Well done, no you didn’t hit the car behind.’

‘Why is that man looking cross Mummy’ asked the twins. ‘Why did he call us “Bloody Holidaymakers” Daddy?’ asked my son. ‘Just ignore him, let’s get in the woods quickly; have we got all the bags?’ Actually it was very pretty in the woods and the children enjoyed hopping over the stream as we wound our way slowly down to the beach. When we eventually got on the beach it lived up to our expectations, we had our first swim in the sea; this was going to be a great holiday. ‘You can have an ice cream when we come off the beach, just be patient while Mummy and I pack the bags.’ ‘Do we have to walk all the way up to the top Daddy?’ Back at the house I tried to summon the energy to cook dinner. I investigated the welcome pack of food Jenny and Chris had left; they hadn’t mentioned they were vegans. After dinner the children had a second wind and ran riot round the big house. They slept well that night and weren’t even woken by the horrendous thunderstorm. ‘Can we watch a D.V.D.?’ piped the twins the next morning as we watched the rain lashing the windows. ‘We could go to the aquarium, or um….’ suggested Mike. We were thankful for the lovely big house that fortnight, as we spent so much time in it. We didn’t go to the beach again, what with the weather and the distance. ‘I wonder how Chris and Jenny got on?’ chuckled Mike, relieved to be going home. ‘Well I did tell them we weren’t Central London’ I replied. Handsford; on the edge of Greater London, bottom end of the borough; only a mile walk to the mainline station, half an hour to Paddington or a short bus ride to the tube station and fifty minutes to Piccadilly Circus. ‘In Bloom’ judges pay a visit to Christchurch The judges for the South & South East England in Bloom Awards have paid their annual visit to Christchurch. Ken Turner and Kelvin Mason were shown around the Borough by Christchurch Council’s Tourism Manager, Ann Simon, and Open Spaces & Countryside Manager, Clive Sinden. On their whirlwind tour, transported courtesy of The Captains Club Hotel, they visited Mudeford Quay, Steamer Point Nature Reserve, Highcliffe Castle, the Juniper Centre Allotments at the Fire Station, Christchurch Quay, New Zealand Gardens and Druitt Gardens. After seeing the rest of the town centre, they met with the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr John Lofts. One of the judges, Ken Turner, said: “We’ve had a very enjoyable day – it’s great to see the town looking so good in the nice warm sunny weather with residents and visitors enjoying themselves. “It’s obvious that Christchurch is a well-respected and looked-after town and we were impressed by the number of volunteers involved in the different organisations.” The results of the judges’ visit will be known at the presentation ceremony for the awards in September.

Young skaters, boarders and bikers celebrate refurbished wheel park at local Skatejam Young skateboarders, BMX bikers and skaters showed off their skills in a Skatejam held to celebrate the reopening of the refurbished wheel park at Two Riversmeet Leisure Complex. The young enthusiasts fearlessly launched themselves into the air from the new jump boxes in a number of competitions arranged by Christchurch Council’s Play Rangers. The winners of the competitions were: Scooter – All ages – Liam Foss Under 16s Inline Skate – Lewis Brown Under 16s Skateboard – Dylan O’Sullivan Over 16s Skateboard – Harry Alcock Under 16s BMX – Josh Clement Over 16s BMX – Allistair Loughton
Carina Gallacher, Senior Technical Officer at Christchurch Council, said: “I’m sure everyone was glad to get back onto the wheel park after it was closed for a bit for refurbishment. Everyone seemed to be pleased with the updated facility and we were treated to some amazing displays. “We would like to thank all of the companies who sponsored the Skatejam by offering some really amazing prizes. Thank you also to DJ Colin McCabe who kept the music playing all afternoon to get the bikers and skaters in the mood.”
