Dear Christchurch, Bargates, Fairmile, Iford, Burton, Mudeford, Stanpit, Friars Cliff & Purewell! We certainly have had mixed weather recently! Did you get caught in any of the snow we had? It took us two hours, instead of twenty minutes, to get home one evening and how we got up that hill I do not know, but we did it. One friend of ours abandoned his car after 5 hours on a journey that should take 25 minutes and walked the rest of the way home! I am sure you have your own stories. Needless to say, we have all had enough of that now and are definitely looking forward to the sunshine, more than ever. Fingers crossed! Hopefully we have a ray of sunshine here in the magazine with lots of good news and articles for you to read. Nellie is back! She took us to a “Murder Mystery Dinner” which sounds rather sombre but was actually a whole lot of fun. I do hope you enjoy the story as much as we enjoyed the evening. Vintage Afternoon Tea raises £700 for charity The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) recently hosted a Vintage Afternoon Tea, the first event to commemorate 10 years of the charity. It was a resounding success raising almost £700! The charity would like to thank all those who attended for helping to raise such a fantastic amount for John’s Foundation. It was a real community event sponsored by local businesses, in aid of local young people. Our thanks must go to Custom Creations Fitted Furniture, M&S Foodhall Ferndown, Sainsbury’s Ferndown, Lidl Ferndown, Allied Bakeries Bournemouth, Tesco Ferndown, Iceland Foods, Ferndown District
Guides Association, Wyevale Garden Centre Wimborne and Dorset Tea. The stars of the show were Vicki from Granny’s China Cupboard, Karl and his amazing Bournemouth Swingsters from Real Vintage and Thomas Whild Photography whose photos captured the afternoon perfectly. Neil Godfrey’s amazing cakes were definitely the show stoppers, so huge thanks to him too. The amazing JTYAF volunteers (pictured below, courtesy of Pete Thornton) worked extremely hard, making sandwiches, washing up and serving the guests. Barn Owls
The silent flight of a barn owl is a majestic and wonderful sight for any nature lover. With the features of their heart shaped faces and deep black eyes, they are an unmistakable icon of the countryside in the UK. However, it may surprise you to hear that the odds are stacked against these wonderful creatures, with a long list of challenges and problems they face daily. Firstly, there’s the two things we all need: food and shelter. Declining or unsuitable habitat means that both of these vital elements to their survival immediately puts them at threat. Suitable roosting sites, and then good quality unimproved grassland for their prey to live (such as voles and mice) can be hard to come by if the quality of the habitat close to them isn’t good enough. During the breeding season, they need to have a plentiful food source within 1km of their roost – their chicks can eat their own body weight in food in one night. The next challenge is overcoming the physical limitations of the barn owls’ wings, which aren’t waterproof. They are also unable to store a lot of body fat, and therefore are particularly prone to starvation during prolonged periods of severe weather or when there is shortage of prey. Taking all this into account, it really is a miracle that five chicks survived and fledged from the roost at Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth last year. Thousands of us watched them on DWT’s webcam, as the parents tirelessly found food for their chicks and kept them safe and warm until it was time for them to venture out into the world. Dorset Wildlife Trust has launched an appeal to raise £20,000 to fund vital habitat work at Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, to help keep food and shelter

abundant for these, and other barn owls in the area. The nature reserve, which has been managed by DWT for 20 years this year, is abundant with flower-rich hay meadows, mature hedgerows and woodland – all holding the small mammals that barn owls hunt, such as voles, mice and shrews. Conservation work needed to keep this a suitable site for barn owls to thrive in includes: reducing areas of encroaching scrub to increase areas of grassland where barn owls feed; putting up 1900m of fencing to maintain the grassland by cattle grazing; holding 300 conservation volunteer days, and managing over 300m of hedgerows on the site. We urgently need to reach our fundraising targets to complete this work. Have you registered a Lasting Power of Attorney between 1st April 2013 and 31st March 2017? If so you may be eligible for a refund of part of the registration fee from the Office of Public Guardian. It has been established that the Office of Public Guardian’s (OPG) operating costs to deal with registering Lasting Powers of Attorney or Enduring Powers of Attorney were lower than anticipated and the Government have advised that refunds are being offered to those who may have been charged more than was necessary to apply to register the documents between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017.

Bournemouth & Poole College creates first Road Awareness Festival for students Bournemouth & Poole College recently joined forces with local public services to create and host the first Road Awareness Festival for students at its Poole site.
The College, which works closely with the local government and community groups, made the decision to host its first Road Awareness Festival in conjunction with local public services, to educate students on the importance of road safety in a visual and informative way. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service, Dorset Police, The British Horse Society and the Borough of Poole were some of the services present on the day. Each carried out a range of activities to help teach students about dangers on the road, and what actions can be put in place to prevent these from happening. During the day Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service carried out a live vehicle extraction, giving students the opportunity to volunteer to be extracted in the demonstration. Representatives from Dorset Police’s Road Safety Department, Dorset Traffic Police and Neighbourhood Policing Teams were on hand to give in-depth talks to students about how to stay safe on the road. There was also the opportunity for students to ask any questions they may have surrounding the typical distractions and conditions which can make driving hazardous.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van A Murder Mystery Dinner! Catch the killer, what next? After a murder mystery walk not long ago, you would think that Nellie had had enough of all that taxing of the brain cells to work out “who did it?”. Well, it seems not. The Rotary Club cordially invited her to take us to The Kings Hotel in Christchurch for an evening of food, drink, entertainment and clue finding. The scene was set… “Some strange things had been happening to the Rotary Choir. Sue Prano walks with a limp, Barry Tone is still rubbing in the cream and Ivor Rees now has to wear a wig. The choir master Ivor Baton thought the choir were not ready for their first performance so he called

It was a dark and stormy night... an extra rehearsal. Scandalously at 8pm Ivor Baton’s body was found in the backstage office, but no murder weapon was found. His body revealed that he had eaten a piece of cake just prior to his death and that traces of poison were found. Death would have been instantaneous”. So, what happened, who did it and why? Those were the all-important questions to catch the culprit and bring him (or was it her?) to true justice. Nellie was not at all sure how this would play out. She was kind of expecting a whole play around the dinner with complicated and confusion actions, so she was a bit nervous to say the least. Stephen was chosen as a suspect and given a sheet of paper with statements on it. There were 6 suspects in all. After our starter which was really rather tasty, the first suspect was put to the test. The ‘audience’ were given numbered questions and each suspect had to

29 answer these questions using the statements on the sheet provided. The ‘suspects’ were all members of the rotary, or friends. Each was a budding actor it appeared, and Nellie was rather impressed by their eloquent responses, carefully mimicking the tone and style of the actor they were performing. We were in awe. Stephen’s turn came and as his sheet mentioned a wig, he quickly borrowed a lady’s fluffy scarf and plopped it on his head. He did look rather silly but it all added to the fun. We had two clues to go on… 1. there was one broken desk clock that had stopped at 7.50pm and 2. there was one piece of cake icing in the backstage office where Ivor Baton was shockingly found. We, in the audience had ten questions for each suspect and it was our job to decipher who told a lie and thus catch the murderer out. Several members of the audience took this all very seriously and wrote down the questions as well as the answers in detail, solemnly discussing their thoughts with the person next to them. This was an alarming find and the wrongdoer had to be caught! It was a great, amusing and entertaining evening in fact. Between

I am not sure he has been contacted however for any more roles, the phone has been very quiet… time will tell. Nellie wants to thank the Rotary team for all their hard work. These groups work so hard to help others. Their purpose is “to organise events to bring people together through activities and projects to enrich the lives of others and generate community spirit.” What a great purpose! Clint Eastwood By Tim Saunders
These days when most people hit 87 years old they reside in a care home, having had to sell their homes to foot the bills. Not so for multiple awardwinning Hollywood heart throb Clint Eastwood who is still very much active. In fact, the next film he will direct is entitled A Star is Born in 2018. Worth over £300m, it seems that my old boss the late Paul Cave, who was manager of legendary crooner Frankie Vaughan for many years, was wrong about Clint. “It was the ‘50s and Clint flew over from the States to meet me in my London office; I couldn’t see any talent and couldn’t do anything for him,” he told me. Soon after their meeting Clint secured his first role in American western television series Rawhide earning around £70 a week but was criticised for how he came across including delivering his lines through clenched teeth. The latter has stayed with him throughout his almost 70-year career. He has contributed to over 50 films over his career as actor, director, producer, and composer. He has acted in several television series, including his starring role in Rawhide. He started directing in 1971, and made his debut as a producer in 1982, with Firefox, though he had been functioning as uncredited producer on all of his Malpaso Company films since Hang ‘Em High in 1968. Eastwood also has contributed music to his films, either through performing, writing, or composing. He has mainly starred in western, action, and drama films. According to the box office–revenue tracking website Box Office Mojo, films featuring Clint Eastwood have grossed a total of more than $1.68 billion domestically, with an average of $37
million per film. He has his own Warner Bros. Records distributed imprint Malpaso Records, as part of his deal with Warner Brothers, which has released all the scores of his films from The Bridges of Madison County onwards. Clint composed the film scores of Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, Grace Is Gone, Changeling, Hereafter, J. Edgar, and the original piano compositions for In the Line of Fire. He wrote and performed the song heard over the credits of Gran Torino. After Rawhide in the 1960s Clint went on to star in a series of spaghetti westerns including: A Fist Full of Dollars and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The 1970s saw him take the leading role of police inspector Harry Callaghan in Dirty Harry, delivering one of his most memorable lines: “Make my day punk”. When Sean Connery turned down the role of James Bond it was offered to Clint but it wasn’t for him. In the 1970s he started directing films, the first being Play Misty for Me as well as his first western, High Plains Drifter. He went on to star alongside Meryl Streep in the romantic film Bridges of Madison County and in 2008 directed, produced and had the lead role in Gran Torino about a ageing widower who watches his neighbourhood fall into disrepute and he single handedly takes on those responsible for this. Often choosing the role of a hard man he plays a part that every man and woman can relate to and sympathise with. As one might expect of a Hollywood actor Clint has had a series of relationships with leading ladies and has several children. A lifelong non-smoker Clint practices a healthy lifestyle which includes transcendental meditation. He is a restaurateur and golfer. He is also a pianist and although he never made it as a professional musician, he passed on the influence to his son Kyle Eastwood, a successful jazz bassist and composer. Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

The Revival of Vinyl Vinyl has made a comeback. Sales have spiked higher than they were in the late eighties and now you can even pick up an LP or two along with your weekly groceries at the supermarket. The music industry seems to have done a complete 360, throwing it back to the fifties with this not-sonew revamp of the way we listen to music.
But why? The way I see it, it’s to do with the way we view music. In the current era of digital downloads and unlimited streaming, music has gone a bit stale. Back in the day it was fresh and exciting. When The Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin released a new track people would queue outside stores to pick up their own copy. If you wanted to hear the latest songs you would have to buy the singles, and with that came a lot more enjoyment and charm than just clicking a button and blasting it from your phone speakers. There’s a sense of authenticity and charm with the sound of music through a record player that is lost with digital recordings. Vinyl has had such a whirlwind renaissance, from almost dying out after the invention of CDs, to outselling digital downloads in 2016, and part of that is down to the fact that recorded music was made to be played on vinyl. Simply nothing compares to the novelty of hearing your favourite tracks played on the format they originated from. The 21st April marks Record Store Day: a celebration of the originality of music and independent record shops. To keep the magic of vinyl alive, a brilliant line-up of bands and artists release various limitededition coloured re-presses, exclusive
singles of unheard tracks and even perform in-store gigs. Dorset is home to a whole array of independent stores. From the charming and nostalgic to the straight up whacky, no two are even remotely the same. Whether it’s for a blast from the past, or to delve into this new wave of revived vinyl, go and check out your local record store and see what all this new fuss is about. By Kate Birch

GUIDE Strawberries
Strawberries can be grown in most gardens but are particularly successful in milder areas with frost free autumns. If space is limited they are very suitable for container growing - in pots, hanging baskets, even window boxes. Best of all is a strawberry tower or terracotta strawberry pot which allows you to grow a lot of plants in one place and has the added advantage of keeping the fruit off the ground and so dirt free. There are early, mid-season and late varieties so you could try a mixture of plants to extend your season. If using a container, use good compost and a slow-release fertiliser and soak the soil before planting. Have some netting ready for when the fruit appears or the birds might
beat you to it! If planting in the garden, you could consider planting through black plastic sheeting, pegged down and the edges buried to stop it blowing away. It’s best to mound up the soil in the centre where the plants will grow so that water will run off either side. Using this method means no weeding is required and you won’t need to put straw or other matting under the plants to keep the fruit clean. It also helps keep in the moisture and encourages early crops by warming the soil. Protect the flowers in spring if frost is expected, with double sheets of newspaper. Replace plants every 2-3 years which can be done cheaply by spreading out some of the runners from a plant and pegging them down. Once they have rooted and are growing well, lift carefully, detach from the parent plant and transplant to a new plot.

Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI Quattro
By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk Fitted with a 3.0 litre V6 engine, the latest Audi A4 Avant becomes almost too powerful for its own good. Don’t get me wrong; the diesel lump is a real pearl, but there’s no way it returns the claimed 57.6mpg when riding on 19inch wheels. I found the car thirsty, and mid-30s was more realistic for me when driving two-up, with no luggage, on a mix of motorways, A and B-roads. The A4 estate model that Audi sent me came in top S line trim, and starts at £38,895, but with a few thousand pounds of options thrown at it, my test car was waving a £46,395 price-tag. You get a lot of kit for the cash, though and Audi is well-known for its upmarket, understated interiors that are both perfectly finished and intuitive. This A4 doesn’t dissatisfy; it has upscale materials everywhere and a straightforward, intelligible dashboard arrangement. Technology is plentiful, too. It includes: a reversing camera, parking sensors, three-zone climate control,
heated electric seats, and a powered, hands-free boot. The A4 Avant is among the best-looking estates on the market in Britain. It’s undeniably classy, and the large 3.0 litre diesel engine is so smooth that it feels more like a hard-hitting petrol unit. What’s more, indiscernible wind and road noise make the A4 the quietest cruiser in its class – by a long chalk. The ride is wonderful, and easily a match for BMW’s 3-series. The same goes for the car’s bobon handling. This practical five-up estate comes with Audi’s standard seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. It changes slickly, keeping the revs low except when Dynamic mode is selected. A moderate push of your right foot is all that’s required to build momentum hastily; stamp down hard, though and you’ll get to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds. Tastes so good... Hot Cross Buns
A traditional Easter, springtime treat, why not bake a batch to share with friends, neighbours and colleagues? Delicious served either warm with butter or just plain, at any time of day.
Ingredients for 12 servings 1. Dough 500g Strong Bread Flour 7g Easy bake yeast 275ml whole milk 50g Butter (unsalted, cold, diced) 1 medium beaten egg 75g Unrefined golden caster sugar 1 ½ tsp salt 2. Toppings 75g Sultanas 2 tsp Mixed Spice 100g Plain white flour 50g Mixed peel 50g Apricot Jam 2 medium egg yolks
MIX: Boil the milk in a pan, remove from heat then add the butter. Leave to cool until warm. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl and then add the milk and beaten egg, stirring with a wooden spoon. KNEAD: On a lightly floured surface, knead the mixture for approx. 10 minutes. RISE: Lightly grease the large bowl, place the dough in the bowl then cover with a clean cloth and leave to rise until doubled in size – this could be up to two hours dependent on how warm the room is. SHAPE: Sift the mixed spice over the dough, then knead in the sultanas and mixed peel. Slice into 12 even sized pieces, roll into balls and place, well-spaced, on a lined baking tray PROVE: Cover the dough again, and leave until doubled in size again. Preheat oven to fan 180C/200C/Gas 6. BAKE: Score a cross on top of each bun with a sharp knife. Mix the plain flour with a tbsp. of water at a time to form a paste. Use a piping bag to pipe crosses on the buns on the cuts you made. Bake the buns for around 11-15 minutes or until golden.

GLAZE: Melt the jam, sieve then brush apricot glaze over buns and leave to cool on a wire rack.

A butterfly has a 12-week life cycle. We learn this during a visit to Butterfly World at Newport on the Isle of Wight. It all starts with an egg, then the caterpillar, the chrysalis and then finally the adult butterfly; each a three week process. There are some magnificent butterflies and moths all under one roof. Next door Fountain World is home to a variety of koi fish, which don’t just make for an alternative investment – with some fetching upto £3,500 – but they can live for over 200 years. We stay in a six-berth static caravan at Sunnycott Caravan Park near Cowes. Here there are 20 caravans on a three-quarter of an acre site. There’s a farm next door. When we wash up we watch the cows grazing. It’s really peaceful. Inside there’s a kitchen, a master bedroom and a second bedroom with two twin beds. A pull out sofa bed caters for additional guests. There’s a flat screen television. But the best part is the shower which provides a good reliable spray of warm water and the oversized shower tray acts as a bath, especially for the little ones, which they thoroughly enjoy. “We’ve owned the site for 13 years,” says Jenny, who runs the site with her husband, Jim. At Mottistone Gardens we marvel at the well cared for gardens – the children love exploring the vegetable patch and seeing the variety of flowers. At Bembridge Windmill apart from climbing to the top we grind oats to make flour and soak up the atmosphere. Henry gets stuck in and starts sweeping the floor. After the children let off steam, running around the outside of the windmill, we discover a countryside walk that takes in some of the island’s breathtaking scenery. At the Needles the electric Model T Ford electric cars are the most popular with our children. It’s a joy to watch their happiness. They also like the swirling teacups. The Needles is also home to sweetmakers and glassmakers. We get to watch both in action. While watching how sweets are made little Henry starts to crawl through the legs of bystanders pushing one lady’s legs apart to
make his way through. There are fits of giggles. In between this side show we learn that 6kg of sugar product makes 2,000 sweets and this is done in 20 minutes. We get to try some at the end. There’s a wonderful sweet shop. Then we watch glass being made and a steady hand is certainly a requirement. It’s a really challenging process that involves a great deal of care when working with such high temperatures. If time allows there’s an excellent restaurant in Marconi’s named after the great man who carried out his groundbreaking radio work here in the 19th century. There’s a 4D cinema and for dare devils the chair lift provides the best way to see The Needles. We travel with Wightlink ferries from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. It is surprising how smooth and fast the 25-miles journey is covered. Our 9am sailing sees us arriving on the island before 10am. We stand on deck and wave goodbye to Portsmouth. This is little Henry’s (21mths) first trip on a ferry and he loves waving at the other boats and just savouring the experience. He’s only just mastered saying ‘boat’ and makes good use of this. The ferry is clean. It feels new and well maintained. On our return journey we are meant to board at 7pm and arrive 45 minutes prior to sailing, feeling quite exhausted after a fun packed few days. To our surprise we get on the 6pm sailing, which is great because our tired children would have found it difficult to wait for the later ferry.. Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman.
